Unfortunately this camera only sends a signal through its HDMI port if it is in "view recordings" mode. Is there a possibility to hack the firmware to allow HDMI output while recording? I'm all in to do the hard work myself, I just need a starting point.

Thank you all in advance.

GH3 & HDMI stream : continuous signal after 5 minutes https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6089/gh3-hdmi-stream-continuous-signal-after-5-minutes Mon, 11 Feb 2013 13:43:29 +0000 xniala 6089@/talks/discussions Hello, I'm setting up a particular workflow for recording an audio-video HD stream via HDMI on a computer via a capture card. I'm planning to buy a GH3, But someone on a french website warned me that when the LCD or the EVF shuts down, the stream stops. The only setting appears to be the LCD/EVF "wake" time : max 5 minutes. So after 5 minutes no more HDMI stream !

I need the camera to be on 6 or 7 hours per day, sending HDMI stream continuously (GH3 not recording : in pause mode). Someone could confirm the 5 min issue ? If it's true, could it be fixed via hack or something ?

PS, Vitaliy answered me earlier in this thread : http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5810/studio-setup-with-atem-television-studio-switcher-and-ghx/p1

but I'm wondering if someone with a GH3 could check this 5 minutes issue.

The camera output is only clean when recording. This limits the time i can use the camera for streaming because the card is full. Is it possible to hach the camera to record 1080 at an extremely LOW bitrate so the card never gets full? What numbeR do i have to change in the .ini file to record at a low bitrate?

- When a monitor is connected to the HDMI port, camera switches to an interlaced mode both on LCD / EVF and HDMI output
- When progressive 1080i -> 1080p patch enabled, camera can record without the usual hang if HDMI monitor is connected
- However AVCHD encoder still writes garbage to the card
- Garbage AVCHD files will playback in camera and not crash, if HDMI screen was connected at time of recording
- The output to LCD and HDMI is not garbage - seems 100% unaffected by current PTools AVCHD patches
- Pulling HDMI cable during recording ends clip, camera switches to live view mode
- Output is always 1080i on 'auto', never progressive regardless of camera mode or PTools config (I am now testing with HDMI option in menu set to 720p)

@Vitaliy_Kiselev has interesting comment - "Good thing is that some HDMI related functions names are present is some debug messages as well as their arguments names"

I am using a SmallHD DP6 as monitor, we can also use TV or PC screen with HDMI, be sure that it displays reported input signal type (i.e. 1080i or 1080p).

Aim: clean high bitrate progressive video instead of current bad cadence 24p -> 1080i.
Or even uncompressed signal. 1080/60p would also be great target but let's start small!

Testing continues...]]>

Is it possible or has anybody done a mod with the development tools out there?

Such a mod can have a neutral picture with 10+ bits and 4:2:2 maybe.

A similar mod, would be to output raw video frames to a flash drive via USB (3).

This allows recording through a device like the Black Magic Video Assistant series for high quality recording.

The sneaky thing which it appears that cameras often do, is give you the camera image as it appears afteral it has been downgraded and compressed. But there must still be some that give you the image before the compression engine, even in 4:2:2 with greater than 8 bits.

But as the micro HDMI port on the G85 (Sony Alpha 6500 and many other cams have the same issue I tihnk) is not locking nor looking very strong I am looking for a simple/leightweight solution. I have already tried the Smallrig cage w HDMI lock, but it seems like adding up too much bulk and makes handholding the camera unpleasent due to the metal finish. There maybe some other solutions which would protect the port in a handheld documentary situation, some space to fix the new sound devices would be really nice of course :) Lockport is a nice solution but not available for the models. Any ideas?

BMMCC Angle HDMI Clamp Lock Kit Module https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16438/bmmcc-angle-hdmi-clamp-lock-kit-module- Thu, 09 Feb 2017 22:11:11 +0000 neirotransformer 16438@/talks/discussions Let me introduce Angle HDMI Clamp Lock Kit Module developed by RADIOPROEKTOR for Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera SmallRig 1773 Cage with Ugreen angle HDMI adapter.

BMMCC HDMI port is rather shaky, especially when used with angle HDMI adapters, so i decide to develop a clamp to solve this problem. After few DIY prototypes i was able to produce small batch of factory machined angle HDMI clamps.

The kit includes:

  • Front and rear parts of angle HDMI clamp (factory machined from aluminum alloy, anodized in black color).

  • 2pcs 1/4" button head screws (Stainless Steel or Black Oxide Steel or both for your choice)

  • 2pcs M4 Stainless Steel grub screws.

  • 2mm allen wrench hex key.

For your choice i can Include Ugreen angle HDMI adapter to the package for additional cost, or you can get it by yourself from Ugreen ebay or AliExpress stores: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ugreen-HDMI-Male-to-HDMI-Female-Cable-Adapter-Converter-Extender-for-1080P-HDTV-/152084086682 https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Ugreen-HDMI-male-to-HDMI-female-cable-adapter-converter-extender-90-degree-angle-270-degree-angle/32403914176.html

!!! Please note that this clamp designed to work with SmallRig Cage and Ugreen angle HDMI adapter only !!!

Package cost total:

  • Angle HDMI Clamp Kit = $25
  • Ugreen angle HDMI adapter (optional) = $5

GH4 V-LOG contrast/gamma shift on external recorder https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16338/gh4-v-log-contrastgamma-shift-on-external-recorder Tue, 17 Jan 2017 23:03:15 +0000 AlexMcV 16338@/talks/discussions Heya,

Not sure if anyone else has encountered this, I've done a quick search and come up with nothin...

I've been using the atomos assassin with my GH4, and noticed that the footage from the assassin is slightly more contrasty/darker than footage recorded internally. I assume it's something the GH4 is doing, because it only seems to happen with V-LOG, not with standard. (I couldn't really be bothered checking with all the other colour modes...)

Here's a clip of me A/B-ing it on a premiere timeline with the scopes up. V-LOG, then standard. https://www.dropbox.com/s/hiugamp6hfbved4/gh4-assassin-contrast-level.mp4?dl=0

(obviously I don't own a colour chart, a set of pencils was the bet I could manage...)

This was recorded 8-bit, as it was the only way I could record both at the same time, but it happens with 10-bit too. At 4K as well as HD. Both the assassin and GH4 are running the most up-to-date firmware, as of Jan 2017.

Did I mess with some settings somewhere? Is my camera haunted? Is this something other people have noticed?

It doesn't actually bother me that much, I guess this is just a "what's up with that?" kinda question. So yeah. What's up with that?

GH4 and anamorphic https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14688/gh4-and-anamorphic Wed, 02 Mar 2016 12:34:32 +0000 Vpro 14688@/talks/discussions Hi to all !

Once again thanks to the ones that use their brain and take time to create some crazy good things !

I have a question about 4K photo mode.

For those who don't know, it enables to record 1:1; 4:3 and 3:2 image.

Here are the image sizes possible:

  • 4K UHD 16/9
  • 3840x2160
  • 4K Anamorphique 4/3
  • 3328x2496
  • 4K Photo mode in mp4
  • 1:1 2880x2880
  • 3:2 3504x2336

With the combination of an anamorphic lens it allows in 1:1 for example, to shoot in 2x time anamorphic with a 16/9 ratio. (not exactly 16/9, maybe 17/9 or 18/9…)

It is awesome because you can have the benefit of shooting anamorphic without being restricted by the "cinemascope" format. This format is nice but may not be appropriate for all movies and anamorphic also has other great attribute :

  • different bokeh.
  • wider field of view.
  • flares for those who like them.

So you'll tell me what's the problem ????

When you enter this 4K photo mode and want a live output via HDMI you need to have a 422 10bit output feed. This 422 10bit option disable the recording on SD card…

And as the output is via HDMI it can only output 4K…so all the various picture sized written above are downscaled to enter in a 4K size… For exemple the 2880x2880 become 2160x2160 in a 3840x2160 so you get a 4K UHD ratio with a square image on it, and so black recorded on left and right.

If you edit in 1080 HD, this 1:1 ratio recorded by 4K HDMIwith a 2x anamorphic, is used by 100% wide and 50% height… So that's not to bad but a little bit of deception as well.

I've tried this morning with a Atomos Shogun recorder I had a chance to use at a production company.

I really plan to test with a Odyssey 7q+ but I think it will be the same because all those equipment are made to work with standards and limited to 4K…

I don't understand why Panasonic made this limitation and in the same time gives us those possibilities (1:1, 3:2…)… They don't have a higher camera to be canibalized (like Canon with 5D and C300…) and they don't sell 4K portable recorders…

SO MY QUESTION IS : May GH4 be hacked ?

to allow 8bit HDMI output with 4K photo mode ?

or to allow recording 10bit 422 on SD ?

I understand the second option may be limited by hardware of the GH4 or by the speed of the SD cards.

The benefit would be 1- having the choice of the image ratio ! 2- having the ability to desqueeze image that I think is a necessity to have a good framing for the operator or other people of the staff/ client

Am I dreaming ? Maybe…but so sad to have the perfect tool for anamorphic and having to use it in a crazy/dangerous/not precise way !

And I don't believe the feature will be unlocked in GH5…

THX for reading! Best .V

The recordings on the camera won't be used, but offcourse the HDMI out has to be clean which is only possible when recording. When using a 32GB card and the minimum standard GH2 bitrate of 13 I could go for 5 hours, but the event is about 8 hours.

An alternative option is to clear the camera and restart recording but I was wondering if there was a lower quality patch I can use to stretch the recording. As I understood it the quality of the HDMI output and encoders are not linked, so the recording can look horrible as long as the HDMI out is clean.

Cheap 4k H264 HDMI recorder https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13096/cheap-4k-h264-hdmi-recorder Tue, 02 Jun 2015 11:46:15 +0000 DrDave 13096@/talks/discussions It seems like what a lot of us need to solve the various junk-firmware issues from camera makers is a small, inexpensive device that will record HDMI externally up to 4K and compress it on the fly in H264, H265, cineform, prowhatever, to regular, cheap SDXC cards. Possibly, it could have open source firmware for the compression so users could mod it.

Such a device would for example convert a Nikon cam with no internal 4K to a mean, lean, video machine. I'm posting this to see if there is interest in such a device, and maybe we can find someone to fab it or maybe some of us can make a Kickstarter project to produce it. I realize that HDMI has its problems.

Also, if there is a cheap option out there that does on the fly compression it would be interesting to see if the manufacturer would make a special edition, if there is enough interest.

Multiple camera live event, streaming with PC, wireless HDMI solution and Starcraft. https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12148/multiple-camera-live-event-streaming-with-pc-wireless-hdmi-solution-and-starcraft. Sun, 11 Jan 2015 08:00:21 +0000 256colour 12148@/talks/discussions Hey. I've been lurking around here for years while toying with my gh2. Got some really valuable knowledge from here and made some fun artsy things for myself. Recently i have found myself a new ambition for my gh2.

For some years I’ve done local lanparties here in my little 1 million population country. There has been somewhere around 150 participants, we have played some older and newer games and it has been fun.

Last year i also did some streaming for event’s tournament (in estonian language) and got surprisingly quite few people watching. I got some feedback saying that it’s pretty fun and all that but there is something missing, it lacks a little bit of that „live“ effect. Unfortunately I’dont have much time to play these days, but I really want to do something extra for local community this year to add a little excitement.

So the plan I want to realize is like this:

Up to 2-3 cameras in sync with eachother, one of them totally wireless with video and sound. Commentary table with 2 mics, lavalier or headworn type which could be used in the schools halls and corridors where events usually take place. Create tv-show or sportslike viewer friendly experience with live editing.

The resources i have: ’Laptop with usb3 port. (haven’t bought yet, need one with good usb3 interface and nvidia chip) ’PC computer with usb3. ’Firewire camcorder hv20 with analog output (firewire connection has 3 secs of lag so can’t be used) ’GH2 ’H4N ’Firewire external sound card with 1 XLR and 2 Hi-Z line inputs (H4N can be connected through line input) ’1 lav mic(works only with h4n 3,5 input, not Hi-Z / line ones) ’Rode videomic

The budget i have is somewhere about 2000€. All gear must be availible for shipping to Estonia (no extra tax inside EU) The things i think i need to buy but are not totally sure about are:

’USB3 HDMI Capture card. It would be good if i could connect two cameras into one, or i might need to use 2 capture cards. But is that even possible? Does USB interface allow such bandwidth? ’Used camcorder with CLEAN hdmi output and usable as usb webcam. I know some Canon camcorders are useable with USB, but i don’t have any idea about delay’s and sync, would be very useful feature nonetheless. ’2 lavalier or headworn microphones for commentary table ’Wireless hdmi video and sound transmitter with minimal to no delay (uncompressed signal is a must?) ’External sound card with more inputs or analog mixer (h4n itself might be enough in some situations) 'usb webcam (do these things have delay?)

The programs used will be Open Broadcaster or Xsplit, but can also be something else if it’s not too expensive. I have done research about allmentioned things myself and later I try to post some of my own conclusions after i have sorted all the links. At the moment things feel a little overwhelming, but it’s ok. ;)

At the moment the thing I haven’t figured out is how will i be able to monitor the cameras if i should buy 2 capture cards. I want to avoid buying Blackmagic ATEM just for monitoring function. I need a some way to monitor capture card inputs without showing them on Xsplit stream window. Basically, I need to preview the camera feeds that you'd throw live before you switch to them. At the moment it’s not possible with Open Broadcaster, Xsplit has a preview scene function in beta 2.0 at the moment which can be a workaround i guess. But maybe there are some other program to monitor capture cards inputs? I think Wirecast supports it, if can’t find any workaround then I might be forced to buy it..

There is also an older thread with also some good discussion: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6391/web-streaming-hdmi-recording-2-3ghxs/p1

I would be most grateful if you would share me your advice and knowledge to make this Starcraft dream of mine happen. = )

SuperMHL to support 8k video at 120Hz... with 4:2:0 subsampling https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12147/supermhl-to-support-8k-video-at-120hz...-with-420-subsampling Sat, 10 Jan 2015 15:13:58 +0000 karl 12147@/talks/discussions The MHL consortium announced yet another display connector standard named "SuperMHL", which is meant to address the (urgent?) demand for 8k video transmission at 120Hz (max for HDMI 2.0: 8k @ 24Hz, max for DisplayPort 1.3: 8k @ 60Hz) . SuperMHL is meant to primarily use USB C-type connectors.

Just like HDMI and DisplayPort, SuperMHL is not specified for transmitting full 4:4:4 color information at 8k resolution.

GAEMS 15.5" 720p Portable Gaming Monitor HDMI input USB powered, possible field monitor as well? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11842/gaems-15.5-720p-portable-gaming-monitor-hdmi-input-usb-powered-possible-field-monitor-as-well Tue, 25 Nov 2014 03:45:24 +0000 CRFilms 11842@/talks/discussions http://www.amazon.com/Performance-Portable-Monitor-Consoles-console-included/dp/B00P45U628

I've seen vids about these for a few months now, but links just showed up on Amazon for sale. $161 for a 15.5 inch, usb powered monitor. Most other monitors like this are also usb video input, so to have a HDMI input at this price range is huge.

It doesn't have a battery or speakers and because of that, they say it weighs less than 2 pounds. It only outputs 720p max rez, but it can accept a 1080p signal, and a 60fps signal. Not sure about 60i or 24p or PAL, but since it's for gaming, it should be relatively lag free. I'm so tempted to buy one and if it doesn't work out, Amazon's return policy is good.

Capture Uncompressed 1080p 60fps video for $180?!?! https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9003/capture-uncompressed-1080p-60fps-video-for-180 Sun, 08 Dec 2013 01:41:00 +0000 CRFilms 9003@/talks/discussions The catch? You'll need a desktop or laptop with USB 3 and Windows, no Mac or Linux, and I'm sure SSDs but I don't know all the specifics yet. I just found this online: http://gamerzone.avermedia.com/game_capture/extremecap_u3

This is a first, a capture box that allows full 1080p 60fps capture. The supplied software only goes up to 30mbs in MP4, but you can record the live view using other software in full uncompressed video. Sucks that you need to tether it, but it looks like it's USB powered so you could take it out on the road and record with a fast laptop.

The gameplay capture scene has been advancing fast. As little as 3 years ago there was really only one player in the market(Hauppauge). Now there are 2 more major players, Elgato and Avermedia, the latter just upped the ante, and for only $180.

EDIT: After doing some more searching I found this, XCAPTURE-1: http://www.solarisjapan.com/xcapture-1-usb-3-0-hd-capture-unit/?setCurrencyId=1 That can also do full HD at 60fps capture, but it's twice the price of the U3. It's main benefit is it can also capture various SD resolutions with various SD connectors, the Avermedia only has HDMI. This guy did an in depth test of the XCapture in various resolutions from SD to 1080p 60fps. http://www.sixfortyfive.com/streaming/xcapture1.html

Use DSLR Monitor as 2nd monitor for Mac Pro (2013) https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10573/use-dslr-monitor-as-2nd-monitor-for-mac-pro-2013 Tue, 10 Jun 2014 02:00:39 +0000 andrevanberlo 10573@/talks/discussions Hi everyone,

I need a portable monitor I could mount on my GH3 or rig it for monitoring my Mac Pro (2013 version). I'd prefer a 9" version but I hope 7" would do the job as well.

This is what I want to use it for: I'm doing live streaming lessons but I need to monitor Skype at the same time to see what the student is doing. As I'll be completely surrounded by lights and cameras there is no way for me to place my thunderbolt monitor (too many things could go wrong).

Would it be possible to use a DSLR field monitor for this? And what would be a good choice?

I don't need colour fidelity, or peaking or any of those features(nice if they're there of course), most important thing is quality of the image and size of the screen: definitely not below 7" and preferably 9" and above.

I have no idea if dslr monitors can be used this way but I'm sure some of you do!

Thanks for reading this,

André
