DIY Blimp for less than £20 https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3455/diy-blimp-for-less-than-20 Sat, 02 Jun 2012 15:55:21 +0000 kronstadt 3455@/talks/discussions After realizing that a good BLIMP is more about the knowledge and theory, rather than the actual construction materials, I'm embarking on a construction of my own blimp for less than £20. This will hold my cheap chinese microphone EM-320E, which is still on its way. My inspiration came from here:
and here
. So whatever advice you can give me on how to improve my design, it would be greatly appreciated, and hopefully will help others later on. These are the materials that I'll be using:

  • Bird feeder (£3) - to make the frame. Length 33cm. Diameter 6cm (the cage is metal, but not too robust. I might replace it with a much tougher mesh from one of those metal mesh bins http://www.ebay.com/itm/190683027361)
  • 2 round tea strainers (£3) for the FRONT and BACK end caps
  • 2 plastic jars with diameter 6cm (£2) - I will cut off the caps so as to make both end caps of the blimp to easily screw onto the frame
  • 300mmX200mm of Ultra fine mesh (£4) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fine-Stainless-Steel-wire-mesh-Insect-Reptile-Vent-Vivarium-/110876648077?_trksid=p3984.m185&_trkparms=algo%3DRIC.CFNPRP%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUA%26otn%3D5%26pmod%3D110876648077%26ps%3D63#ht_500wt_1077 This will be used predominantly at the front of the construction. Fine mesh will go inside the frame. It will be last layer that the wind will travel through, and hopefully by then it will be completely broken. I'M NOT ENTIRELY SURE IF THIS FINE MESH WILL AFFECT THE SOUND TRANSPARENCY. I really need your advice here. PLEASE HELP!
  • Micro fiber cloth OR nylon stockings (£1) - this will go inside the birdfeeder, after the fine mesh
  • 6 Rubber bands (£0) - to hold the mic inside the bird feeder in X pattern
  • 2 fluffy faux-fur lady's ankle warmers (£5) http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300698800758 hopefully these are good, thick and tight enough fake fur to block most of the wind. I will just saw the ends of these fluffies together, to make them into "bags". They are 40cm long, so should hold the entire blip pretty nicely. If you can find any better material on eBay please post a link.

So what do you think? Will it work?

I'm especially concerned with a small (6cm) diameter of the birdfeeder, but I hope that adding the fine mesh should supplement that like in this video

Or am I wrong?

3-axis stabilizers ala FreeFly MOVi or ZenMuse - DIY and commercial https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6758/3-axis-stabilizers-ala-freefly-movi-or-zenmuse-diy-and-commercial Sat, 20 Apr 2013 13:11:01 +0000 DanDOF 6758@/talks/discussions I am interested in discussing possible DIY setups for an affordable ($500 or less) motor-based camera stabilization system. Most likely this will use a combination of gimbals, gyros, brushless motors and some controller. However, I think there is potential of at least discussing the combination of of rack pinion gear system instead of gimbals for stabilizing 3-axis movment (X, Y, Z).

TOPIC RULES:

  1. Don't put people down for asking basic questions. I am new to this knowledge area too (with no experience using RC multicopters).

  2. Encourage creative thinking. Perhaps stabilizing cameras handheld requires/deserves a different approach than tech used on multicopters.

I am reserving this post as a summary of "good/feasible" ideas.

As you may know i'm a developer of Angle HDMI Clamp Kit http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16438/bmmcc-angle-hdmi-clamp-lock-kit-module-developed-by-radioproektor of SmallRig BMMCC cage. My next attempt in this line of projects was the camera handle, but it seems things moving slowly and i decide to release Angle Expansion Box Module first. Box uses high quality connectors made by Lumberg (Germany). It takes months to test a lot of different connectors before choose proper ones, especially DC power which should work smoothly with BMMCC power plug same as with another more simple ones. Angle shape provides compact and secure cable management, no more mess of wires around camera. Fits perfectly to size and shape of BMMCC Angle HDMI Clamp Kit. 3D printed body. Compatible with SmallRig and Wooden Camera cages. Compatible with other BMMCC controllers. For request 3.5mm jack can be wired to 2 PWM channels or to S.Bus. Other connectors are 2.5 jack LANC and camera DC power in.

Currently this project is in final stage of development. Hope expansion box will be available in month or so. Price will be around $25-$50. Worldwide shipping with registered air mail about $5.

BMMCC Angle HDMI Clamp Lock Kit Module https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16438/bmmcc-angle-hdmi-clamp-lock-kit-module- Thu, 09 Feb 2017 22:11:11 +0000 neirotransformer 16438@/talks/discussions Let me introduce Angle HDMI Clamp Lock Kit Module developed by RADIOPROEKTOR for Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera SmallRig 1773 Cage with Ugreen angle HDMI adapter.

BMMCC HDMI port is rather shaky, especially when used with angle HDMI adapters, so i decide to develop a clamp to solve this problem. After few DIY prototypes i was able to produce small batch of factory machined angle HDMI clamps.

The kit includes:

  • Front and rear parts of angle HDMI clamp (factory machined from aluminum alloy, anodized in black color).

  • 2pcs 1/4" button head screws (Stainless Steel or Black Oxide Steel or both for your choice)

  • 2pcs M4 Stainless Steel grub screws.

  • 2mm allen wrench hex key.

For your choice i can Include Ugreen angle HDMI adapter to the package for additional cost, or you can get it by yourself from Ugreen ebay or AliExpress stores: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ugreen-HDMI-Male-to-HDMI-Female-Cable-Adapter-Converter-Extender-for-1080P-HDTV-/152084086682 https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Ugreen-HDMI-male-to-HDMI-female-cable-adapter-converter-extender-90-degree-angle-270-degree-angle/32403914176.html

!!! Please note that this clamp designed to work with SmallRig Cage and Ugreen angle HDMI adapter only !!!

Package cost total:

  • Angle HDMI Clamp Kit = $25
  • Ugreen angle HDMI adapter (optional) = $5
  • Worldwide shipping by registered air mail with tracking number = $5
  • Payoneer funds transfer fees = 3%

Currently I can accept payments only with Payoneer Billing Service because PayPal don't works in my country for receiving funds. Motorized timelapse options for varavon slider? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11105/motorized-timelapse-options-for-varavon-slider Sat, 23 Aug 2014 15:05:31 +0000 ICProductions 11105@/talks/discussions Hey PV! Are there any options/alternatives to the motoroid/timeroid for the varavon sliders (specifically v800)? Are there other brands/systems that work ?

I'm mainly wondering about the Konova Motorized Kit B that comes with the crank as well. It seems a better value and can be upgraded as I go.

I've also been entertaining DIY and have read numerous ideas, including this one - https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=m5_ZQCQj7sg.

(He doesn't talk about how to attach it to the carriage at all, I'm thinking of buying the varavon weight pulley because it has a plate that fits)

Does anyone have examples of DIY for the varavon ?

Also - going the DIY route - is it a better design to have the have the motor on an end or with the carriage?

Official name for this product will be: FLEXIOM

Flexible Input Output Manager (or Module) ...

The official website will be http://flexiom.com (under construction).

Support: feha[@]flexiom.com

P-V members will get rebate.

I have decided to make DIY product for Universal DC converter. This unit will allow use of any power source 3-30v as input and max output current will be 2A. The unit consists of voltage converter that gives you adjustable output for example GH2, GH3 8.4 V or any other equipment that is sensitive and requires exact voltage.

Consider this unit as a protection "Layer" between your DSLR and any power unit.

I know there are many ready power solutions already out on the market, but many still struggle and burn/brick their expensive equipment trying different alternative powering sources.

I decided to take my time and make this DIY product as a test but if there is an interest might get as batch production.

The unit will cost a $75 USD + postage (P-V members price). More than 65% of the price to buying needed components the rest a small compensation for research, drill and soldering :-)

For EACH UNIQUE SALE (per member) I will contribute a $10 USD to support P-V !

Product components :

  • ABS plastic project box

  • Electronics component (The converter)

  • DC IN/OUT 5.5x2.5 mm jacks

  • Digital Voltmeter (RED) with external switch to check IN voltage, OUT voltage and OFF

Let me know your interest ?

GW- SP100, the future of modular cam ? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11752/gw-sp100-the-future-of-modular-cam- Wed, 12 Nov 2014 14:22:35 +0000 draft59 11752@/talks/discussions The new Super 35mm CMOS image sensor is also being integrated into a two-piece mini 4K camera system, the GW- SP100. This tiny camera produces beautiful 4K video, with 4096x2160 or 3840x2160 resolution at up to 50/60p recorded locally to SDXC UHS-I U3 memory cards. It has an interchangeable MFT lens mount system, chosen due to its very shallow flange depth, which offers the greatest flexibility to end users who have already invested in lenses. The design concept camera system features a video unit with a foldable and detachable 7-inch HD LCD monitor and offers the same IP capabilities as the GY-HM890 camcorder, with HD wireless video transmission and wireless camera control.

The mini 4K camera can also be attached to the MT-GB001 gimbal option; this may be used with a helicopter system for aerial shooting, with anti-shaking and anti-blurring technology ideal when used with a handheld system. So, while the mini 4K camera produces images suitable for cinematic applications, the system also has applications for broadcast news and could open a whole new world for broadcasters.

DIY Fresnel LED lights https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3558/diy-fresnel-led-lights Tue, 12 Jun 2012 14:37:00 +0000 kronstadt 3558@/talks/discussions LED lights are awesome, save you a LOT of hassle on location, and are dropping in prices. At the same time the good old ARRI fresnel tungsten lighting gives you that beautiful cinematic lighting - so beautiful and easy to control that you might want to put up with all the hassle and cost that they involve.

So I thought: would it be possible to combine best of both worlds? Would it be possible to have LED lights which also work as a Fresnel lights? Then I found out that this is the newest cutting edge thing that ARRI offers in it’s L-series, and LightPanels is releasing its own early models too, and they cost tens of thousands of dollars!

I wonder if I can make it DIY?

After all it shouldn’t be that difficult. I thought of getting a 312ASZ led panel (which, correct me if I'm wrong should give me a 250W equivalent) and sticking one of those plastic Fresnel lenses that old people use to read newspapers. Like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Magnifier-Full-Page-Magnifying-Fresnel-Lens-Sheet-XL-/320649270129?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item4aa82f9371#ht_3008wt_932 or fresnel lenses for Solar cookers like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fresnel-Lens-Over-Head-Projector-Solar-Cooker-Oven-Project-OHP-310mm-x310mm-x4mm-/150826264411?pt=UK_Gadgets&hash=item231df2275b#ht_500wt_1164

But then the question becomes, are these good enough Fresnel lenses for purposes of cinematic lighting? And how to make it so that the lens moves back and forth, so as to focus the light?

What do you think? Any advices? Any suggestions? Any links to such DIY tutorials?

It came last week and this weekend i've managed to spend an hour or two fiddling with it and making up a super cheap and nasty looking setup that sort of looks functional for stops that you judge by eye rather than hard stops that stop you. There's a super quick video of its operation here

There are more details of the construction in the description of the video on vimeo.

Very much version 1 that looks super cheap, but i think will do for now. I'm looking for improvements on the marker attached to or under the jar opener, as well as the markers themselves, along with the possibility of hard stops.

Since some time I’ve wanted to leave my camera without the strap but I also wanted to be able to re-strap it back again in a fast way. There are plenty commercial aplications that fulfill this need/wish but is much more fun create your own. This one I called LaZZo and is a design my brother and I developed. Unfortunately I didn’t take any documentation during the creation of the concept – many many hours of talking and exchanging groundbreaking ideas and personal experiences to then draw, first by hand then in computer 3d modeling software, renders of possible outputs, to follow rigorous anatomic and ergonomic tests – or process of making of it – even harder team work.

On the other hand being a fairy simple system, the only thing you’ll need is 1/2 a meter of a strong string/line/rope. We used a military grade one that AM had, you can also go with mountain line or kevlar… the stiffer the hardest to get loose. The only thing is that has to be strong enough and fit into your camera shackle

And this is AM AM, mi brother, and not twister • gashô

2.5mm Angled Stereo Plug DIY for the GH2 https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4846/2.5mm-angled-stereo-plug-diy-for-the-gh2 Tue, 09 Oct 2012 11:48:47 +0000 gameb 4846@/talks/discussions I could never find a 2.5mm angled stereo plug. The only other alternative to the regular straight plug which stick out of the camera and could potentially snap while inside the camera, is the 3.5/2.5 angled adapter. I found these adapters to be quite dangerous because they sometimes can loose contact and therefore are not very reliable. So I assembled my own version which works perfectly.

These two plugs are quiet standard i've seen them in shops and on ebay, easy to find and cheap. Make sure that the "golden" plug fits strongly into the GH2 plug to make a reliable contact. image

Take the interior part of the golden plug and the exterior part of the silver plug, bend the interior of the golden plug or just cut it off so it fits the the shape of the silver plug. image

Fit the golden interior part into the exterior silver part of the plug, so that the little "minidisc" (red arrow) of the golden plug is outside, if not it doesn't make contact. Sorry - I just realized that the exterior angled silver plug has a plastic inside whith which you fix the cable. I forgot to put it into the photo. But obviously that helps a lot the stability of the plug. image

Done! image

DIY Adaptor for GH2/FZ200 battery to power USB of GoPro 3 https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5393/diy-adaptor-for-gh2fz200-battery-to-power-usb-of-gopro-3 Thu, 06 Dec 2012 03:17:05 +0000 trevmar 5393@/talks/discussions The internal battery in my GoPro 3 only powers the camera and LCD for about an hour. I need longer shoots than that, so I built a lightweight (38 gram / 1.3oz) adaptor to allow me to use my spare FZ200 / GH2 batteries to power the camera via its USB power input. A single BLC12 battery runs the GoPro/ Touch-LCD combo at 2.7K-cine protune for about 2 hrs before the internal battery kicks in for another hour. Together the GoPro 3 will now run at 2.7K for 3 hrs, long enough to fill the 64GB SDXC cards I am using :)

I used an LM3485 3Amp switching regulator evaluation board because 1) I had one lying around, and 2) they are nearly 100% efficient, and don't get warm. The battery holder is a tray from a BLC12 charger I bought off Ebay, and the LED voltage display is also off Ebay (it draws a negligible 10ma and allows you to guesstimate how much battery charge is left). Photos of the rig below.

It would be much easier to just have bought an external USB battery pack, but they are heavy and bulky. This way I get double use out of the batteries I already carry around with my rig.

The only complaint I have is the color output. This particular LED has a strong magenta tint that's very apparent when I use it as a fill light in daylight situations. During my search to find an affordable solution, I stumbled across this. Basically, the guy made his own filters by printing colors onto transparencies.

I know it's not too expensive to buy a pack of these filters, but with this method, I can print out any filter I want and cut out whatever size I need from it. Here's a short video I put together to show how some of these custom filters work.

Hope this is helpful to someone!

For eg. useful when you can't or don't want to use a monitor.

Is there such a thing? I don't think so, or at least I could not find it.

Do you think that something like that would be practical and useful for anamorphic shooting?

Someone here tried to make guerrilla anamorphic adapter, a loupe would be easier to build and perhaps even to sell.

I'm not sure where you can get sheets of adhesive PTFE in other countries though. I assume there are industrial supply companies that have raw materials like this.

I'll get some pictures of them up soon.]]>
DIY Shotgun Microphone (with in-built shock mount) https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4340/diy-shotgun-microphone-with-in-built-shock-mount Thu, 23 Aug 2012 08:42:58 +0000 Matt 4340@/talks/discussions Hi everyone! :) A while ago I made my own shotgun microphone for my camcorder. It's VERY cheap to build (mine cost £12), and sounds way better than you'd think for the price.

Several people have asked me to make a video of how it was done, so I've finally got around to making it. I thought I'd post it here because some of you might find it interesting. Anyway, I'd like to know what you think.

$16 DIY Rig https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2215/16-diy-rig Tue, 07 Feb 2012 12:02:20 +0000 bostonmike 2215@/talks/discussions Anyone who is on a tight budget and really wants to spend their money where it counts might benefit from this. I am not a professional photographer and I don't do event shooting or any other type of situation where I'm getting paid to shoot photos/video. Its just myself and a small crew who are into shooting short films. I try to spend what little money I have on the camera and sound gear and improvise using DIY lighting, dollies, rigs, etc...That being said, I really don't care if someone notices that I'm using a VHS box and cut up plastic blinds for a matte box..its only the finished product I care about.

This is also a prototype, there are many ways this can be improved, but its fully functional in its present state. Sorry for the lousy photo, but my Canon Powershot is half dead. I still need to do a few adjustments such as replace my plastic and rubber mounts with metal plates, spray the matte box with a flat, non-glare paint, attach a black elastic bag between the matte box and lens so when I use smaller lenses there will be no light seeping through on the sides, etc.

If anyone is interested, I'll give you the full details. The whole thing was built using these two racks and scraps of items I found laying around in my garage/tool room. It holds my GH2, and Juicedlink nicely. I have my NTG-3 on a boom pole ($17), so there is no mic support arm. It would be easy enough to attach one.

Next real DIY RAW camera will consist of... https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2715/next-real-diy-raw-camera-will-consist-of... Wed, 28 Mar 2012 14:01:34 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 2715@/talks/discussions image Via: http://www.giadatech.com/index.php?app=product&act=show&id=94

Yep. Something like it (with i5 4 core processor), with additional dock for stock 2.5" SSD. And camera module attached by USB 3.0.

It'll require Bauer battery to supply about 35-40W.

Not your average DIY dollie, trolly, or slider https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2365/not-your-average-diy-dollie-trolly-or-slider Wed, 22 Feb 2012 08:11:09 +0000 Brian202020 2365@/talks/discussions I made this several days ago for a low budget short so I thought I'd share. It's very heavy duty, and can support a fully loaded RED ONE with ease. I used it with a fully loaded AF100 with a Hyperdeck Shuttle, rods, mattebox, FF, SmallHD, etc. It might be overkill for a GH2 tho. I accidentally tightened the two halve together too much and got flat spots in the wheels, so I'm in the process of replacing them as well as a few more little modifications. I'm not super happy with the rail design on the ends, but I needed something quick for the shoot. I'll probably update that at some point as well.
