Demo: De-clicking Canon FD lens to get stepless aperture https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2410/demo-de-clicking-canon-fd-lens-to-get-stepless-aperture Sun, 26 Feb 2012 13:21:21 +0000 ticoneva 2410@/talks/discussions I would like to share my experience de-clicking FD lenses.

Dedicated video lenses usually feature stepless aperture to allow for smooth adjustment of exposure. Most still photography lenses, in contrast, feature stepped aperture adjustment. This article demonstrates how to "de-click" Canon FD lenses to get stepless aperture.

Before you continue, note that

  1. De-clicking is easy. All you need to do is to unscrew the rear and take out one or two things.
  2. The process will not introduce dust into your lens---the optical assembly is sealed in one piece inside the lens.
  3. There is a "cheat" that gives you continuous aperture adjustment without the hassle of opening up the lens. All you need to do is set your lens to the smallest aperture, then turn the ring on the FD adapter. The downside of this cheat is you do not have any indication of which f-stop you are at.

With that in mind, if you still believe de-clicking is useful---and I personally do find that being the case---here is a quick demonstration on how to do so.

1. Take apart the lens from the rear and remove parts that cause un-smooth movement

taken apart
You need to remove the two parts indicated by the blue arrows if you want the aperture ring to rotate smoothly. If you can stand the un-smoothness, however, you can keep the parts on---with the parts on, step 2 alone is actually sufficient to give you stepless aperture.

2. Remove the piston

piston
On lens such as the the 28mm---in which you lock by rotating the whole lens---the piston underneath the aperture ring provides the click. Remove the piston de-clicks the lens. If you have kept the two parts on in the first step, you can now re-assemble the lens.

If instead your FD lens locks with a rotating metal ring, you will need to remove the two ball bearings inside the aperture ring.

3. Removing the spring holding the aperture selector

remove spring
At this point if you re-assemble the lens without the jiggering parts, you will notice that the aperture bounces back when you try to set a small aperture. This is due to the spring mechanism used in FD lens' aperture control: the aperture ring is actually only capable of driving the aperture in one direction; reverse movement is driven by the spring holding the aperture selector. Removing the spring solves this issue.

4. Linking the aperture ring to the aperture diaphragm

linking
Because the aperture ring is designed to only drive the aperture in one direction, you need to manually link the aperture ring to the diaphragm. Here I used a short polyester thread, lopping around the coupling pin on the diaphragm and held underneath the link on the aperture ring. Make sure the aperture size match up with the f-stop indicated on the aperture ring.

If your FD lens locks with a rotating metal ring, you will be lopping around the coupling fork instead:

link to driver

5. Re-assemble the lens. It's done!

16 different lenses - same target. Which look do you prefer? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2129/16-different-lenses-same-target.-which-look-do-you-prefer Sat, 28 Jan 2012 09:56:25 +0000 oscillian 2129@/talks/discussions I didn't find a topic that suited my little test, so here we go: 16 lenses shooting the same backlit subject, moving the camera to different spot to match field of view, thereby creating different spacial compression. Camera set to aperture priority. All lenses were wide open, except for the Hexanon 40 at 1.8 and 2.8 (beautiful pancake lens). Check for bokeh, colour, flaring and sharpness (yes, the 12mm 1.6 is in focus). I was surprised the Canon nFD 35 2.0 flared so much compared to the 50s. Anyone has had the same behaviour?

Not too long after the HDSLR revolution started, the companies started bringing out accessibly priced large sensor video cameras with interchangeable lenses. Such as the AF100, then later the FS100, then a bit later the C100.

Since then the C100 has been replaced with the (very disappointingly small update) C100mk2, the FS100's big brother the FS700 has been "replaced" (unofficially) with the FS7 (so surely the FS1 or FS200 is coming along next? Perhaps a topic for another thread...). Thus where is the AF200? One which has been waiting for an update for years and years longer than any of the others (and no, the AF100A hardly counts! Though I guess that is what Canon did with their "C100mk2"....).

Perhaps with the success of the GH4 (surely the most successful of the entire GH line so far), and the mainstreaming of 4K, those two factors will be sufficient to propel Panasonic to update the ageing AF100??

On a somewhat related point, how relevant is the AF100 still in 2015 and beyond? Some would think it still is: http://www.anycamerawilldo.com/old-but-not-out/

Am somewhat considering an AF100 myself, as planning on doing the next upcoming wedding season with one GH4 body and perhaps five or so GH1 bodies (maybe swapping out one GH1 for a GH2 with a monitor instead, for my second shooter to use). Thus I'll have a GH4 for single camera shoots (corporate ads / music videos / etc) and I'll have a heap of GH1 bodies to cheaply (only US$150 each!) cover the multiple angles needed for filming live events such as weddings. And I should be able to easily edit between them (making life an awful lot easier for me than this wedding season when I used: Nikon D5200 / Sony A5100 / Panasonic GH1 / G3 / GF3 / BMPCC).

However, half considering if it is worthwhile getting an AF100 as well if I see one cheap enough (say perhaps getting close to US$1,000-ish). As for appearances sake it could be reassuring for clients/brides to see my show up with an AF100, and not just a bunch of tiny GH1 bodies. Additionally I could have it handle some of the sound needs with its XLR inputs (additional to my usage of a Tascam DR-60D). And it is a camera which should cut in fairly easily enough with the bulk of the GH1 footage I'd hope?

50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 CINE-SERVO Canon zoom, small lens below $100000 https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11575/50-1000mm-t5.0-8.9-cine-servo-canon-zoom-small-lens-below-100000 Fri, 17 Oct 2014 01:52:36 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 11575@/talks/discussions image

With the increasing use of large-format single-sensor 4K cameras for field productions like sports and nature documentaries, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, has introduced the new ultra-telephoto CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 Ultra-Telephoto Zoom lens. With the world's longest focal length (75-1500mm with its built-in 1.5x extender) and highest (20x) magnification among Super 35mm zoom lensesi, the new CINE-SERVO zoom lens offers cinematographers new possibilities for shooting scenes in HD, 2K and 4K on single-sensor cameras. The new Canon CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm zoom lens is an ultra-telephoto lens with superb 4K optical performance and a removable Digital Drive unit to accommodate either broadcast or cinema-style production.

"The use of large-sensor 4K cameras is rapidly spreading beyond motion pictures and episodic television, into many new types of productions such as broadcast sports and nature documentaries," said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. "We are proud to deliver a lens with the advanced 4K optical performance, impressive focal range and operational versatility required to serve the creative needs of today's growing community of 4K and UHD image makers."

Available in either EF- or PL-mount, the new Canon CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 Ultra-Telephoto Zoom lens leverages Canon's decades of expertise in optical design, computer simulation, and advanced glass materials to achieve a balance of ultra-telephoto 4K optical performance and image brightness with a compact form factor of only 15.9 inches in length (PL version) and a weight of just 14.6 pounds. This combination of advantages provides outstanding aberration correction and high image quality extending from the center of the image to all edges. For professional users, this lens enables close-up 4K imaging of wildlife subjects or athletes while maintaining the physical distances necessary in such shooting situations.

Ruggedly built, the durable new Canon CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 Ultra-Telephoto Zoom lens features a removable Digital Drive unit for traditional EFP-style (electronic field production) operation with a convenient zoom/rocker switch, programmable zoom and focus settings, and data connections for use with broadcast-type field/studio servo-demand controls for zoom and focus. Removal of the drive unit enables Cinema-style operation of the CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm lens, including clearly engraved barrel markings, an 11-blade iris to help achieve smooth "bokeh," and compatibility with lens-support rods, matte boxes, and other cinema accessories.

Lens-Camera Communication

The new Canon CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 Ultra-Telephoto Zoom lens is compliant with industry-standard camera-to-lens communication protocols to help ensure compatibility and maximum performance with multiple brands and models of 4K, UHD and HD cameras. These standards include 12-pin serial communication (common to major broadcast camera brands), Cooke's /i Technology and Canon EOS-LENS data communication technology (employed by the EOS C500, EOS-1D C, EOS C300 and EOS C100 Cinema cameras). In the case of the Canon Cinema EOS system, precise lens data - including aperture setting - is displayed in the EOS camera's viewfinder, as well as recorded in the video file as metadata along with the model name of the lens and the given focal-length setting.

Broadcast-Style Operation

The new Canon CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 Ultra-Telephoto Zoom lens integrates advanced broadcast-style operability features that Canon developed as a leading maker of HDTV lenses for major sports coverage, wildlife photography, and ENG (Electronic News Gathering). These features include servo control of focus, zoom, and iris settings via the lens' removable Digital Drive unit. Ergonomically designed for operator comfort, the unit integrates a high-precision, high-resolution 16-bit microprocessor encoder linked to a convenient zoom/rocker switch that provides immediate start-up. This encoder enables camera operators to smoothly zoom at a variety of speeds, from a very fast 1.5 seconds to a very slow 180 seconds from full-wide to full-telephoto. Additionally, the encoder is capable of transmitting accurate analog and serial data for zoom, focus and iris settings through the Drive unit's 20-pin connector, allowing for this lens to be incorporated into most existing virtual imaging systems.

Operators can also manually control focus and iris settings from the drive unit or use it to program focus, zoom position/speed, and iris settings if desired, allowing for precise, repeatable lens operation. A small LCD display on the drive unit displays current settings for operators. Focus can also be adjusted manually by rotating a knurled rubber collar on the lens. Combining both broadcast operability and the accuracy required by cinematographers, the lens features a 180-degree focus rotation angle. With environmental-performance capabilities that stand up to typically unforgiving broadcast sports and wildlife shooting environments, the lens employs a tough, optimal chassis structure, and is weather and shock resistant. In addition to its three 20-pin connectors, the drive unit also has a broadcast-standard 12-pin power connection for remote-control operation. The lens also utilizes 700mA of power.

Cinema-Style Operation

With its Digital Drive unit/hand grip removed, the new Canon CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 Ultra-telephoto Zoom lens provides digital filmmakers with the advantages of its industry-leading 1500mm focal length (with 1.5x extender) and 4K optical performance. Facilitating cinema-style use, lens-barrel markings are clearly engraved in both feet and meters on both sides of the barrel, and focus indicators on the front side of the lens are marked on an inclined surface to make them easy to see from the back of the camera. Additionally, luminous paint is used for the scale display on one side of the barrel to help make the markings visually identifiable in the dark. Both 0.8 type and 0.5 type gear module focus accessories can be used, and gear positions support the use of a follow focus and all other standard electronic accessories. With a 31.4mm image circle, this lens will cover industry standard Super-35mm format sensors.

A red alumite identity color is used for the lens' mount area to indicate conformance with Canon Cinema EOS optical technology's many outstanding features such as support for EOS-LENS data communication. Step-up USB adapters for Panasonic, Canon, Sony & others https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/18896/step-up-usb-adapters-for-panasonic-canon-sony-others Tue, 30 Jan 2018 23:19:58 +0000 DrDave 18896@/talks/discussions These have been around for awhile, but the price has come way down. Basically, it's a USB DC-DC converter that lifts the standard USB 5 volts to, for example, 8.4 volts for Panasonic.

I purchased this one.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073XYYYWR

There's another model that has two USB inputs, so you could use two power banks or use one and draw more amps.

I was skeptical, and the packaging made me even more so, cardboard & crinkly shrinkly, but I plugged it into my cheapest 5200mah power bank and measured the voltage. 8.8 volts, which is just about right (I've gone as high as 9.2, but prefer not to). Notably, the needle on my trusty voltmeter did not wiggle. Also noteworthy, it didn't seem to need the recommended 3 amp draw. It comes with a 3 amp wall wart if you just want to plug the camera into the mains for power.

It comes with a bog standard dummy battery. The step up converter is tiny, not much thicker than the cable. Plugged in the camera (Panasonic G7) and waited. The 5200mah power bank ran the camera for 156 minutes, or two and one half hours. Not bad--you are going to lose some power in the conversion so don't skimp on the power bank. I'll do some tests later with my RAV 20,000mah bank.

Camera ran cooler than expected.

So there you have it, easy, lightweight power from USB. I had been using 9 volt packs with stacks of Panasonic 18650 cells (runs forever....). But this is really easy.

You can buy adapters for most cameras, and considering the fact that it comes with a dummy battery, the price is cheap. Will it burn out? Interesting question.
