Doc recording kit options

Hi everyone.

So, I am looking to have a few things sorted out in the sound dept. for a doc I am working on. I have decided that the subjects will have lavs with Tascam DR-05 recording on 16GB cards (enough space for the 12hrs or so quoted by Tascam on battery life with Eneloop Pros) I can't afford wireless, so the recorders are the best combo right now for lavs (opinions welcome on this) I heard samples of Zoom H1 vs the Tascam and the Zoom has too much hiss to my taste.

On camera:

This is where I am finding a bit of a hard time deciding. I want a compact kit (preferably without a rig)

Kit 1: Roland R-26 using all of its mics recording to their own independent channel (thats 2 omnis + XY) AT875r recording into the Roland R26 Since this test showed that the Roland has a bit of a hiss, I thought that using a Fethead attached the already short AT875r will give me a lower noise floor.

Omni + XY + Shotgun channels to mix in post along with the lavs. --For this kit, I would need to get a cage to have both the Roland and the Shotgun mounted on the GH2.

Kit 2: For a lower price as the above: Zoom H6/H5 w/ SSH-6 mic. This module mic is a XY and short shotgun at the same time, which (with Zooms software) you can then choose how much of each set (XY and shotgun) you can have in your final mix later.

Sample of software and mic tests:

on this one is that the AT875r takes the bench of gets sold because the module replaces it. The recorder mounts directly on the hotshote (no cage, or rig)
Not enough samples from the SSH-6 mic out there, especially indoors and with dialogue, so it's a bit of a gamble and I don't know how well the noise floor will be with that combo. -/+ XY and Shotgun only left to mix later in post with the lavs. Hearing samples from the Omni+XY+Shotgun on the Roland leaves me with a bit of nice feeling.

Kit 3: The original kit I imagined I would get.

Dr-70D pre-amps are very nice but could also compliment them with a Fethead
DR-70D built-in mics may be stereo...but they don't really give a stereo feeling so kind of pointless and the main reason for me to look at the above

That's pretty much what I have right now as options.

I also read about the Olympus LS-100 which has nice quiet pre-amps (for the XLRs) but I was advised by a friend that the 16bit recording may be too limiting if I need to compensate for either noise or for mixing. Any opinions on that?

Sadly enough no shop in London has all of these so I can test them all in one place and see what may fit best.

Also, my doc stuff is multi-field (indoor, outdoor) fly on the wall style 95% of the time so I really like the idea of having mixing options between the lavs, stereo and shotgun.

What do we think??

Good Shape ReWo Cage for the Panasonic GH2. I bought this a year or two ago as I was using my GH2 and assembling all my gear but have now upgrading to the GH4. Lots of threaded holes and cut outs for the doors. I wish this cage fit my Gh4 but it doesn't. All threads are in good shape. Aluminum on the Tripod mounting screw show wear at the base turn but threads fine. Wear on that screw hole is from screwing on and off my tripod and mounts occasionally. Looking for 350 shipped. I will ship priority USPS insured domestically. Payment can be paypal or USPS money order. Can ship international but cost will be increased.

Hi there just need a vote count for those who would buy a custom bmpcc cage with removable handle for rough $100 printed by shapeways.. Pics below are of the real product on my bmpcc just made a few minor tweaks and can't sell the design until I reprint myself. Just my solution to 300 dollar similar products and seems plenty strong with the sigma 18-50 attached lens must weigh around 1.5-2 lbs. Thanks

Awesome cage for a A7s or similar camera. Will work with a 5d or similar without a handgrip also.

Comes with top handle, top rail mount, cold shoe, and HDMI lock.

Cold shoe can be moved anywhere on the cage.

All metal and super solid. I was using it with my A7s and it was great. I have decided to go Kinemini 4k, so I no longer have a need for this cage.

Hi all, I need you advice.

I really want to have a handle on top of my rig. And would love to have it shoot at slightly low angles when on shoulder. At the same time, I hate those bulky rigs that make a tiny GH1 or GH2 into an Alexa size. So I decided that I need a cage for my GH1, which will soon become GH2 or GH3. After battling with some DIY builts, I think I'd just buy a cheap cage. The problem is that cheap cages for GH1 or GH2 are difficult to find. I'm even considering buying this and cutting off one of the rods on the left to allow for my GH1's flip out screen/viewfinder.

Well, I've held off on this as long as I can. Non-paying clients have forced my hand – so I have to part with some beloved gear that I put a lot of time, research and money into acquiring together. This is a nice "full package" of GH2 shooting accessories. It includes:

• Anodized Cage with handles, rails, allen wrenches, and threaded holes, even has lips to secure camera and allows battery change without removing camera.

• Matte Box (vertically adjustable) with flags and different sized rings,

• Rails (vertically adjustable on tripod mount), both top and bottom rails

• Monitor with three batteries, hood, charger, short HDMI cable, and AC plug. Not a high-end monitor, but works well, reliable, and is great for focusing.

• Follow-focus, including two different mount heights, I can forewarn that this does have some play, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's an easy fix.

• Threaded arms and shoes mounts – work for mounting any items on cage or camera.

All is in good cosmetic and working condition (and in a nice Pelican Case), except the minor play on the follow focus which was mentioned. If possible, I'd like to sell the kit or as much together as I can. Check out pictures and make me reasonable offer if interested please.

*note this does not include the camera bodies themselves.

Hey guys, I wanted to show you guys how the Wooden Cage works with the GH3, I did forget to point out 2 important features on the cage because I wont be using them, one is the fact that it comes with a small plate that can help prevent your camera from slipping if you use a follow focus and the 2nd one is that you can also use the hotshoe as another point to tighten or secure the camera. Varavon Armor Uni for Cage or Bracket GH2

The Varavon Armor Uni is up for sale as a CatchIt deal today at an unbeatable price and I'm really tempted to get it. Before I do I'd like to ask if any of you guys use it and what you think about it. It is the only cage(?)/bracket style thing I can think of that (at a reasonable price) gives clear access to the controls on the right side of the camera while still allowing the LCD screen to swing out on the left side. There is also a neat accessory camcorder style hand grip you can purchase at an additional cost.

I have a few questions:

When the GH2 is mounted to the baseplate can you still get your eye close enough to use the EVF? Does the cage allow the battery door to swing down far enough to change the battery without twisting or removing the camera?

At first I couldn't quite visualize how the GH2 fit into the cage until I saw a 360 degree view on Youtube so here are a few reviews I found to be helpful:
