Here's my setup:

3D Rig: image

Shoulder Rig:

image

Test video 1:

1080p60, Narrow FOV, Protune, CamRAW WB

Neat Video, Magic Bullet Looks, a little Shadow/Highlight to recover the clouds

Here's a frame without 3D for reference: image

Gotta say, I LOVE the dynamic range on these cameras! Unless you're shooting something really dark, all but the brightest highlights (ie. the sun) can almost always be recovered in post. There doesn't seem to be much of an issue recovering shadows under most conditions, either. Of course, you'll need to use noise reduction on more serious shadow lifting. I find Neat Video invaluable for heavy processing, as it will remove blocking on smooth areas once you start pushing the limits.

Rig Setup:

Pretty simple, actually. For the 3D part, I got a pair of macro sliders, tore off the rubber surface grip for the bottom piece, removed one of the mounts for use as the top piece, used a 1/4-20 hex standoff to link them together, and slid the GoPros inside. The tension holds them in place perfectly, and the gap from no grip lets me perfectly align the cameras in parallel. The only downfall of this one is that things 5ft or closer tend to hurt the 3D effect, since the lenses are spaced around 3" or so apart. If you're focusing on a subject further back, close objects will look quite a bit off. Same with close subjects, things behind him will be off. After about 5ft, though, everything is fine. I'll be making a more sophisticated and lightweight setup soon, which will allow me to invert one of the cameras to get the lenses much closer.

For the shoulder rig, it's just a Cavision shoulder pad with some 15,000mah USB batteries gaffer taped to a flat section of a flash bracket, screwed into one of the holes in the back. I have a Swivi monitor up front with the 3D rig mounted onto it. It's really lightweight, but I definitely need something more in back to balance it better.

As far as battery life, I left the GoPros running for 6hrs straight. I was able to monitor the battery life through the Swivi's meter, and after that time period, even with the Swivi on, I only used about half the battery. So I should hopefully be able to get around 12 hrs max from that setup.

Here's my Red/Blue workflow:

As far as syncing the left and right, I've found that they're usually about 2 frames off. I try to find and event that is easy to spot on both cameras (subject just passing in front/behind something, light turning on, etc.) to do an easy sync. If that doesn't work, Pluraleyes has no problem matching them up.

Once that's done, I color correct and grade, then apply the 3D Glasses effect in AE. Using the Difference mode, I can align the frames and set keyframes, so the focus can follow the subject no matter where he moves. Then set Keframe Interpolation to smooth the transitions. It's tedious, but the effect is worth it.

Finally, I'll set to Balanced Colored Red Blue and adjust the Red/Blue balance to reduce/eliminate ghosting, scale up to get rid of the edges (aligning will throw them off), and export.

And for Side by Side:

A lot of it is the same, though I seem to have issues with the 3D Glasses effect in Stereo Pair leaving lots of empty space around each frame, and you can't scale each side up individually to fill it. To get around that, I set everything up in the 3D Glasses effect, then export the left and right sides individually. This aligns them properly from the start, so I can get around the empty space issue. Then I do correction and grading, and put them into a double-wide frame next to each other (3840x1080) to get the side by side 3D. YouTube doesn't seem to have a problem with this, though I'm not sure if it would be compatible with any place else.

In the end, it's not really much more work, just more time waiting for it to encode, and with the double wide setup, you get true 1080p 3D.

A note about Premiere/After Effects and 5DtoRGB:

Both Adobe programs will crush the highlights and shadows a bit, at least in Protune. Running the video through 5DtoRGB first will prevent this from happening. It'll also create a much higher quality file than converting through Cineform Studio, since it interpolates color, reducing blocking artifacts. Plus, you can reverse the Cinestyle curve while converting if you want. 5DtoRGB also makes the reds look redder, instead of the slight orange cast they seem to have.

Netflix goes 3D https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5725/netflix-goes-3d Wed, 09 Jan 2013 10:05:56 +0000 David_Cole 5725@/talks/discussions

Netflix (NFLX) on Tuesday announced new enhanced streaming options for users on select ISPs. Following a series of rumors that suggested as much, Netflix has confirmed the availability of “Super HD” streaming — which is simply Netflix’s branding for 1080p content — and 3D video streaming. Both services are available immediately with a huge caveat: only Netflix subscribers with Cablevision or Google Fiber Internet service have access to the new content. For those lucky subscribers, Super HD and 3D content is accessible using a number of devices including the Wii U, compatible Roku players, the Apple TV, Windows 8 PCs and select smart TVs and Blu-ray players.

After Effects CS6: 3D Glasses Effect Convergence Problem https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5557/after-effects-cs6-3d-glasses-effect-convergence-problem Sat, 22 Dec 2012 15:17:39 +0000 BlueBomberTurbo 5557@/talks/discussions I'm having a problem in AE CS6 when setting "Scene Convergence" in the 3D Glasses effect. If I move it from 0, it'll start leaving blank space to the left and right sides of each clip ( [empty][Left][empty][empty][Right][empty] ). It's visible in all view settings, but most apparent in Stereo Pair (Left/Right), which is needed for the final output. I read that you can scale the two layers individually to get rid of the problem, but all that does is scale both at the same time, in essence just resizing the issue. Any ideas, or tutorials around, that can solve this? Can't find much info about the 3D Glasses effect on the web at all...

48p and 120hz - sometimes more is less https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3016/48p-and-120hz-sometimes-more-is-less Thu, 26 Apr 2012 04:14:09 +0000 shian 3016@/talks/discussions I've never felt this sick to my stomach before. I just got home from a night out at a local bar, and after being forced to watch "Requiem for a Dream" on a 120hz HD display, I want to explode.... or vomit..... or both. Every time I walk into a store, or a bar and see an HDTV playing a movie or television show at 120hz, I wanna smash it. When I see 48p, I see the same thing. It looks like CHEAP video. It looks like old 80's BBC Dr. Who videos. It kills the romance inherent in film. The slight surreal fluid motion that transports us into the story.

24p may not be the best setting for fast moving action, but you can adjust the shutter angle, you can shoot 48p and force it to have a keyframed motion blur when needed. You can use the tools available when and where needed. But a whole program in 48p looks like shit. (Except for sports. Sporting events look awesome at 120hz). One of my friends who isn't in the industry, says he doesn't see a difference, and the other (who is a DP that I respect) says he sees it, and likes it. LIKES IT???? FUCKKKKKKKKK!!!! Seriously???

Please tell me I'm not alone in this. Tell me I'm not the only one who sees this. Tell me I'm not the only one who HATES IT...

I know Ultrastudio 3d makes it possible for a MacBook Pro to perform smoothly with DaVinci Resolve (so that you can grade on the fly), but I haven't found any information regarding the limits of the Ultrastudio Express. Does it boost the real time performance of your NLE's and grading software, or does it just capture and play back?

Back to 3D TVs https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4022/back-to-3d-tvs Tue, 24 Jul 2012 04:30:36 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 4022@/talks/discussions image

Interesting things happen on TV market. Your TV will very soon become full function computer.
They are all already computers running some variant of Linux.
But all this SmartTV thing will quickly change as LSI used will be much more powerful (in their ARM cores part). Btw, thing on photo already has dual ARM cores and four core GPU (same as New iPad :-)

3D is no longer premium function. You can get it for very cheap, and local brands now started offering 3D sets (good sign that it'll be standard function soon).

Same previously happened to USB content playback (now standard function of all main brands). And to wired LAN (also moved to many entry models).

Now, middle level TV must have not only 3D, but also very good SmartTV functions, some advanced remote with voice recognition, build in WiFi and few other things.

Some are cheap TN bases, some are MVA, some very good IPS. With sizes from 23" to 27". And some are actually more like TV, with full tuner and build in player capabilities, common to any modern LG TV set.

Good IPS based 27", like DM2752D, is all you need for everyday amateur work with 3D footage.

Converting 2D to 3D https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3178/converting-2d-to-3d Thu, 10 May 2012 19:22:14 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 3178@/talks/discussions Stereo conversion, or dimensionalization as it is sometimes called, is the process of making stereo images from non-stereo traditional 2D images. We originally published an Art of Stereo conversion two years ago, and this is a new updated version of that story covering The Avengers, Titanic, John Carter, Star Wars: Episode I, plus the newest techniques and approaches.

Many people argue that if you want a film in stereo you should shoot it in stereo. Yet many filmmakers do not want the physical size of an on set stereo rig, or they prefer to shoot film (ruling out stereo in camera, effectively) or want to use anamorphic lenses which are extremely difficult for stereo native capture. Even on a stereo film, lenses and situations often times render a single camera the only viable solution. Thus, even on films shot in stereo there may well be a need to convert some footage and that high quality conversion is an important tool in the box of any effects house.

The average panel size for TV applications is expected to grow to 36.5-inch in 2012 from 35.5-inch in 2011, Wu estimated, adding that the comparative size at AUO will edge up by 1.5-inch to 36.3-inch during the year.

Via: http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20120426PD219.html

Earlear report:

Economic Daily News says that AU Optronics (AUO) has receinved orders which may reach 100K units for 65-inch naked-eye full HD 3D TV panels from LG Electronics and Vizio

Good news indeed.
4K could have some chance in TVs, but only as part of 3D sets, I think.

Very interesting thing will happen also in phone market, as further enchancing resolution of phone screens is pointless. 720p will be standard resolution quite soon. AMOLED also takes more and more of this market.
It is clear that next target will be 3D sets.

Beamsplitter rigs (aka mirror boxes) are the usual solution, but they have many problems: 1+stop light loss, large & heavy, issues with polarized light, fragile mirror etc.

A better solution to bring the lenses closer together is to mount the bodies vertically - but it's no good for video (portrait format + rolling shutter is scanning in opposing directions, a no-no for 3D). So the question @Vitaliy_Kiselev, is there any chance the sensor setup can be changed to reverse the X/Y scanning? So 1920x1080 becomes 1080x1920.

The shutter would also need to roll left->right on one body, and right->left on the other. ie. sensor scanning is 90 degrees rotated on one body, 270 on the other.]]>
