US: Trump sometimes does smart things
  • Federal regulators are lifting energy efficiency regulations for several common types of light bulbs. The original rules would have required energy-efficient versions, such as LEDs, of several common light bulbs including three-way incandescent, candle-shaped chandelier and recessed reflector bulbs.

"There's a very good rationale when you hear it," President Donald Trump said in the Oval Office on Wednesday. "And what's saved is not worth it. For the little they save, and what people were going through, it's not worth it. And price was another thing."

Energy Department spokeswoman Shaylyn Hynes said the law requires light bulb regulations "only when doing so would be economically justified"

Finally some sanity in this department.

  • In the US and Canada, before the ban, people started to stockpile incandescent bulbs! Everyone was surprised, when the ban went into effect, incandescent bulbs were still available at dollar stores, 4 for $1. Then incandescent bulbs at hardware stores went up 5 or 6 times the price. So throughout the ban it was no problem to get them!

  • So called efficient fluorescent bulbs are TERRIBLE for the environment, containing mercury and also lasting for shorter times than standard incandescent because of poor quality materials and production. These stupid fluorescent bulbs are probably even less recyclable than standard bulbs.

  • @bannedindv

Chinese led bulbs that you can find in ordinary stores are also horrible.

Usually they will fail in quite short time, flickers and also has horrible color.

  • the fallout from cheap fluorescents and low CRI leds is mindboggling from all the years filmmakers made horrible looking stuff on great cameras! Some DP's still use regular cheap tungston lights because they give good colors.

    Make very little sense.

As even cheapest brands ala Neewer (who just rebrand various factories to US) have very nice 95-97 CRI and non flickering cheap lights.

  • Chinese LED bulbs, bad ones:

  • Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced a final determination that the current standards for incandescent light bulbs do not need to be amended because the benefits of more stringent standards do not outweigh the cost to the American people. DOE’s analysis concluded that increasing the efficiency of incandescent lamps could cost consumers more than 300 percent compared to the price of today’s incandescent lamps.

“Today the Trump Administration chose to protect consumer choice by ensuring that the American people do not pay the price for unnecessary overregulation from the federal government,” said Secretary Brouillette. “Innovation and technology are already driving progress, increasing the efficiency and affordability of light bulbs, without federal government intervention. The American people will continue to have a choice on how they light their homes.”

  • Looks like idiot here (as far as I remember all this meat ban, ozone holes also are his things).
Considering light quality almost all CLF and LED lights you can buy in ordinary store sucks - CRI 70-82.
Even CRI 95-97 lights are not ideal for everyday usage due to blue peak.
Best lights are very expensive sunlike CRI 99 ones, they are superb.

Claims of 15000 hours life of CLF or LED lights are bullshit, as they have cheap drivers with capacitors that can die as soon as 100 hours sometimes (if heat can build up and it is not enough ventilation).

In lot of places where you do not have central heating and where you are below 25 degrees you can't calculate efficience the way promoters like to do, as usual buld becomes little heating element, so its efficience is same.

Average led light bulb quality also qucikly goes down due to idea to reduce prices where it is impossible to do (like removing heatsink).
