Camera Sales: Holiday camera sales in US expected to tank up to 50%
  • Talked to some of market members.

Camera sales in the most hot months will be divided. Due to tariffs delay drop will be much smaller than 2x times expected otherwise.

    • Sony and Canon will have best sales and will offer largest discounts with focus on cheap consumer models.
    • Panasonic discounts on GH5s, S1 and S1R, to keep consumer division alive, can reach 55% on Black Friday.
    • Olympus can cease to sell any cameras except two models in US since January.
    • Pentax will follow Olympus leaving only their top model, another option is leaving US and EU markets since around February

But due to much larger tariffs on lenses and bodies now since January sales are expected to drop up to 2 times and up to 3 times on pro top level bodies.
Such high level on more expensive bodies happens because people move the purchase decision upfront even if they will need credit money.

Japanese companies will focus on premium products aimed on rich markets that are not much sensitive to prices.

Since September we will see multiple waves of lenses price jumps with biggest wave being end of December or start of January. As tariffs war will unwind fast we can see as much as 50% price jumps on most popular consumer level bright zooms that are still made in China.

  • Olympus and Nikon cancelled Photokina 2020 participation.

Note that Olympus may be not around (as consumer cameras company) at the time of exhibition. it is extremely strong rumors that final decision can be made soon and all will be sold or closed up in very fast manner.
