Sony develops CFexpress Type B memory card https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/21653/sony-develops-cfexpress-type-b-memory-card- Fri, 01 Mar 2019 12:17:21 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 21653@/talks/discussions
  • Incomparably fast speed, designed for professional and industrial use, supports future evolution of digital devices
  • High reliability in extreme conditions thanks to TOUGH performance and smart software
  • New Sony CFexpress card reader, MRW-G1, takes full advantage of Sony CFexpress Type B's high-speed performance
  • The Sony CFexpress Type B memory card and the CFexpress Card Reader will be in the market in early summer 2019

image

Sony announced the development of the CFexpress Type B memory card (CEB-G128), a new ultra-fast next generation memory card2 that is ideal for professional and industrial use. With its super-fast speed of up to 1700MB/s (read) along with highly reliable toughness, this memory card supports the future evolution of digital devices.

Enhancing Sony's high performance, value-added memory card line-up, the CFexpress Type B is designed based on a new specification which adopts the latest interface, PCIe®3 Gen3, standardised by the CompactFlash Association.

The Sony CFexpress Type B memory card offers a 128GB capacity, with higher capacity models of 256 GB and 512 GB planned for the future.

Incomparably fast

The Sony CFexpress Type B memory card is around 3 times faster than Sony's fastest CFast memory card (with 530MB/s read speed). With a write speed of up to 1480MB/s, this card meets future requirement needs for secure industry data-recording or requirements from professionals to capture hi-resolution images or high-bitrate video.

With an ultra-fast read speed of up to 1700MB/s, even large-sized data files can be transferred quickly, when compared to existing memory cards. For example, when making copies or backing up large-sized data from multiple memory cards, transfer time will be dramatically reduced. This greatly improves work efficiency.

The new CFexpress Card Reader, MRW-G1, is optimised for Sony CFexpress Type B memory card and takes full advantage of the card's fast read speed. This reader is also compatible with Sony XQD card G series and M series.

TOUGH performance

The Sony CFexpress Type B memory card has superior strength, surpassing the CFexpress standard by a factor of three, being able to withstand 70N of force in bend, and five times greater withstanding falls from up to 5m high.

The card is also temperature proof, X-ray proof, anti-static and has a UV guard so it can perfectly support usage in tricky or tough environments.

Peace of mind

Media Scan Utility and Memory Card File Rescue are available as a free download to Sony CFexpress card users.

Media Scan Utility is PC software that automatically scans your Sony CFexpress memory card every time you connect it to a PC via your MRW-G1 card reader4. The software keeps you informed of the condition of your card and lets you know if you're nearing or have reached the flash memory limit.

Memory Card File Rescue eradicates every photographer's worst nightmare -- deleting photos accidentally and losing your precious work. The software recovers accidentally deleted files including RAW or high-resolution images and videos, so your work is safe from whatever obstacles are thrown your way.

The Sony CFexpress Type B memory card and the CFexpress MRW-G1 Card Reader will be on the market in early summer 2019.

Prices

  • 64GB at ¥17,820 or around $160 (pure profit is around $110)
  • 120GB at ¥29,160 or around ~$262 (pure profit is around $200)

Top perspective - cards use same 3D NAND and similar controllers to SATA drives (usually they try to make more channels or use TLC in MLS mode).

And 120GB SSD with same speed sells for $23-28. Let's assume worst case - that they run TLC memory in SLC only mode, this produces retail cost around $70 (as it is 3x RAM chips) for 120GB drive.
I am sure they do not use such approach, as it is cheaper to increase channels or run memory in MLC mode.

Sources tell that single slot and XQD one was among top Sony demands to for Nikon to get their sensors.
Sony will also get good share of all Nikon profits from cards via unusual sharing scheme.

Yes, you can get NVMe SSD with high sustained write read/speed, but you can't get SSD drive with such high random read and such low latency. And such things can be most important in real life.

image

Pros

  • High Random Read And Write Performance
  • High Performance At Low Queue Depths
  • High Simultaneous Read And Write Performance
  • High Read And Write Performance At Small Capacity Points
  • High Performance Maintained As The Drive Fills
  • Heavy Workloads That Cause Drive Wear And Require High Endurance

image

image

Especially with heavy apps ala Adobe and Resolve you get different feeling.

Note that small 32GB M.2 Optane drives can be got locally now for ala $25-35 and are ideal drive for editing individual H.264/HEVC small projects.

Also suggest good software - Teracopy, can just set editing path on such drive as favorite and copy with one click from any NVMe SSD.

Sony TOUGH SD Cards https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/20341/sony-tough-sd-cards Tue, 28 Aug 2018 10:07:57 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 20341@/talks/discussions image

  • World’s toughest SD card is bend proof and drop proof
  • World’s first one-piece molding structure for strength and hardness
  • Ribless and switchless design ensures there are no fragile components
  • World’s fastest read speed up to 300MB/s and write speed up to 299MB/s
  • Waterproof and dustproof world-class ratings of IPX8and IP6X respectively
  • Keep your work safe with the SD Scan Utility and File Rescue Software

Sony today announced a brand new innovation in storage media with the launch of the “SF-G series TOUGH specification”UHS-II SD card. Addressing the needs of photographers who are reliant upon their photographs remaining safe when their SD cards are removed from the camera, the new SF-G series TOUGH specification range combines the world’s fastest read and write speeds with an ultra-rugged design that is bend proof to 180N, and drop proof to 5 meters. For photographers who are fighting against the elements to get the perfect shot, the SF-G series TOUGH specification range of SD cards are also waterproof with an IPX8 rating and dustproof with an IP6X rating.

The new SF-G series TOUGH specification range of SD cards are 18 times stronger than the SD standard[ix] with world’s first monolithic structure (one-piece molding, no empty space in the card) and materials of high-grade hardness, unlike conventional SD cards with a thin, 3-part ensemble. They are protected against typical physical damage that can affect conventional SD cards such as a broken plastic casing, broken data protection lock and broken connector ribs. This has been achieved through a new means that it is the world’s first rib-less SD card with no write protection switch. These developments ensure that the SF-G series TOUGH specification is more resistant to bending and easy to break parts are removed entirely and has been engineered by Sony to deliver the best balance of hardness and toughness. Completely sealed with one-piece molding structure, no water drop, dust or dirt is not allowed to come into the card, meeting highest grade of waterproof (IPX8) and dustproof(IP6X).

Unleash the power of the camera

In an industry trend, driven by Sony, full-frame mirrorless cameras such as the α9 and α7 series are packing in more and more performance in both stills and video performance. These high-end cameras rely on fast memory cards to maximise their performance and with professional photographers now using SD cards more frequently, users are demanding the levels of reliability and durability associated with other professional card types. With the world’s fastest write speed of up to 299MB/s, buffer clearing time is minimised. This allows the photographer to shoot many frames per second and capture the action that they want. The SF-G series TOUGH specification range also supports V90, the highest standard of video speed class, making it an ideal companion for shooting high resolution video.

Furthermore, transferring high capacity photo and video files is made simple with the SF-G series TOUGH specification, thanks to a read speed of up to 300MB/s. This is another world’s fastest which dramatically enhances workflow efficiency after the shooting is all wrapped up. In a further acknowledgement of the practical needs of photographers, the SF-G series TOUGH specification range feature bright yellow banding design, making the card easier to spot in dark shooting conditions.

Ultimate Assurance

SF-G series TOUGH specification SD cards offer a series of further features, designed to give photographers peace of mind. These include an ‘SD Scan Utility’ which allows the user to check that the card is good condition and File Rescue Software[x] which can recover data and photos that might have accidentally been deleted. Furthermore, SF-G series TOUGH specification SD cards are also X-ray proof, magnet proof, anti-static, temperature proof and feature UV Guard.

Pricing and Availability

The SF-G TOUGH series of memory cards will be available in 32GB, 64GB and 128GB capacities. They will launch in Europe from October. Full product details are available at: http://www.sony.net/sfgt/

Let's get for example AM4 consumer CPUs - Ryzen chips have 24 pcie v3.0 lines.
4x goes to NVMe slot of board (Intel lacks this). 16x go to GPU - and this one on A320 and B350/450 can't be split (aka bifurcation), to force MB makers to buy more expensive chipsets for SLI.
4x is left for the chipset (on Intel it is same, see below).

Now go into Intel consumer CPUs.

DMI 3.0, released in August 2015, allows the 8 GT/s transfer rate per lane, for a total of four lanes and 3.93 GB/s for the CPU–PCH link.

In August 2007, PCI-SIG announced that PCI Express 3.0 would carry a bit rate of 8 gigatransfers per second (GT/s)

So DMI 3.0 is PCIe 3.0 4x. And all this nice looking premium MB's actually share same actual 20x PCIe 3.0 lines.

Now back to our storage things with many NVMe drives. Ideally we want to have as much PCIe lines as possible to keep fast copy between any of them and allowing fast copy via 10Gb network adapter (and this one also eat lines a lot, you need PCIe v2.0 x4 at least for one port!).

For all chipsets that allow bifurcation of PCIe x16 GPU slot we must leave x8 only for GPU if it is editing/grading machine.
For storage machine it is best to avoid external GPU and go with build in one if you need it, so all x16 lines will be available.

For example Threadripper has 60 PCIe lines - x48 lanes for GPUs, x12 for I/O.

Now to our solutions, from top to bottom.

ASmedia 2824 based solutions. PCIe 3.0 x16/x8 into 4x PCIe 3.0 x4 or pair of PCIe 3.0 x4.

microSD EXPRESS - SD cards move towards direct PCIe interface and NVMe protocols https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/21625/microsd-express-sd-cards-move-towards-direct-pcie-interface-and-nvme-protocols Tue, 26 Feb 2019 03:41:11 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 21625@/talks/discussions

microSD Express joins SD Express in integrating PCIe® and NVMe™ for up to 985 MB/sec transfer rate with backwards compatibility

BARCELONA — Mobile World Congress Booth #CS120 — Feb. 25, 2019 — The SD Association announced today microSD Express, offering the popular PCI Express® and NVMe™ interfaces alongside the legacy microSD interface for backwards compatibility. Like SD Express, microSD Express uses the PCIe interface delivering a 985 megabytes per second (MB/s) maximum data transfer rate and the NVMe upper layer protocol enables advanced memory access mechanism, enabling a new world of opportunities for mobile devices.

microSD Express cards defined in the SD 7.1 specification will be offered in a variety of capacities such as microSDHC Express, microSDXC Express and microSDUC Express. An updated video provides an overview of microSD Express and SD Express.

“microSD Express gives the mobile industry a compelling new choice to equip mobile devices with removable SSDs,” said Hiroyuki Sakamoto, SDA president. “SD 7.1 prepares consumers and mobile device manufacturers to meet ever increasing storage demands for years to come.”

“PCI-SIG is pleased to continue our collaboration with the SDA on this newest innovation for the world’s leading removable memory card – microSD,” said Al Yanes, PCI-SIG president and chairman. “PCIe specification conformance tests are available today by major test vendors, offering a significant advantage for any new PCIe adopter.”

microSD Express delivers speeds necessary to transfer large amounts of information generated by data-intense wireless communication, speed hungry applications running on cards and mobile computing devices, ever evolving gaming systems, multi-channel IoT devices, numerous automotive uses, higher resolution mobile videos, action cameras , 360o videos, VR and more.

“NVMe is the industry-recognized performance SSD interface from the client to the data center to mobile, shipping in millions of units,” said Amber Huffman, NVM Express® Inc. president. “By SDA adopting NVMe technology into the new microSD Express cards, users can experience lower latency and increasingly fast transfer speeds across various applications.”

microSD Express uses the well-known PCIe 3.1 and NVMe v1.3 specifications defined by PCI-SIG® and NVM Express, respectively, on the second row of pins. PCIe 3.1 includes the low power sub-states (L1.1, L1.2) enabling low power implementations of SD Express for the mobile market. In addition, SD Express cards with significantly higher speed data transfer rates are expected to consume less energy than traditional microSD memory cards while keeping the same maximum consumed power. The cards provide system developers new options offered by PCIe and NVMe capabilities, such as Bus Mastering, Multi Queue (without locking mechanism) and Host Memory Buffer. By relying on successful protocols already in the marketplace, the SDA gives the industry an advantage allowing utilization of existing test equipment and saving in development process by usage of existing building blocks used in existing designs.

The SDA released visual marks to denote microSD Express memory cards to make matching the card and device easier for optimal device performance.

The SDA revised its white paper, “SD Express Memory Cards with PCIe and NVMe Interfaces,” that provides more details on the new capabilities and features found in the SD 7.1 specification. It also introduced a new white paper “SD Express and microSD Express Memory Cards: The Best Choice for Your Future Product Designs” providing product engineers with an in-depth look at the opportunities now available. More information is available on our website.

Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage Corporation today announced the launch of the MG07ACA Series, the world’s first enterprise 14TB Conventional Magnetic Recording (CMR) HDD. Using a 9-disk, helium-sealed design, the new MG07ACA Series provides the power-efficient capacity and storage density needed by cloud-scale and enterprise storage solution providers to achieve their TCO objectives.

“We have raised the bar with the new MG07ACA Series 9-disk helium-sealed design,” said Akitoshi Iwata, Vice President of Storage Products Division, Toshiba Electronic Devices and Storage Corporation. “By utilizing an innovative design, we continue to improve the benefits that high-capacity disk storage can deliver to our broad global customer base.”

The MG07ACA Series features both 14TB 9-disk and 12TB 8-disk models. The helium-sealed 3.5-inch mechanical design realizes better storage density and a lower HDD operating power profile than the previous MG06ACA Series for optimal TCO in cloud-scale infrastructures. The series also utilizes Toshiba Group’s laser welding technology to ensure the helium remains securely sealed inside the drive enclosure. The drives support a SATA 6Gbit/s interface and 7,200rpm access performance. The 9-disk 14TB models achieve a 40% increase in maximum capacity over previous MG06ACA 10TB models. Additionally, the 14TB models improve power efficiency by over 50% (W/GB).

“Toshiba’s first helium-sealed nearline drive intercepts the market at a class-leading 14 TB capacity with CMR,” said John Chen, industry analyst at Trend Focus. “Its early time-to-market for this capacity positions the company well to meet the storage needs of large hyperscale and cloud companies. Additionally, the company’s choice of a 9-disk platform paves the way to achieving higher capacities in future product generations.”

“While enterprise server and storage customers realize that shingled magnetic recording (SMR) technology can improve HDD capacity, the adoption of SMR HDD products into server and storage systems is a transition that will take several years,” said John Rydning, Research Vice President for hard disk drives at IDC. “Toshiba’s new helium-sealed enterprise HDD is the world’s first 14TB of storage capacity using conventional rather than shingled magnetic recording technology, giving enterprise customers the highest capacity HDD available in the market today for existing server and storage system architectures.”

Sample deliveries of MG07ACA Series drives to customers sequentially begin today. For more information on our full line of HDD storage products, please visit: https://toshiba.semicon-storage.com/us/product/storage-products/enterprise-hdd/mg07acaxxx.html.
