Shadows (underexposed image) lift in post https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7451/shadows-underexposed-image-lift-in-post Sun, 07 Jul 2013 09:01:27 +0000 apefos 7451@/talks/discussions I did some tests with GH2 and T3i 600D to see what is possible to do to increase dynamic range. The exposure stops was measured by camera meter and exposure compensation graphics in LCD with the camera pointed to the grass in the shadow.

The GH2 with 128Mbps GOP3 and a good denoise with neatvideo give these results:

Good quality image when lifting 3 stops underexposed image without idynamic

Good quality image when lifting 4 stops underexposed image with idynamic

This is enough for most situations, including clouds in blue sky with foliage and people under the shadow

The T31 600D in MOV (1.3x CBR = 7.1MBps), HDR and RAW and a good denoise with neatvideo give these results:

Good quality image when lifting 3 stops underexposed image in MOV

Good quality image when lifting 5 stops underexposed image in HDR (lifting done in camera by two iso exposures in HDR video function)

Good quality image when lifting 5 stops underexposed image in RAW

RAW is more powerfull but MOV and MTS are very good if the datarate is high.

ACDSee 16 https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7110/acdsee-16 Thu, 30 May 2013 16:42:59 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 7110@/talks/discussions

ACDSee 16 makes it easier than ever for photographers to manage, edit, share and achieve stunning results with their photos,” said Doug Vanderkerkhove, Founder and CEO of ACD Systems. “With seamless uploading to Facebook, reverse geocoding and creative editing tools, ACDSee 16 adds incredible value to an already rich feature set that’s not available in similarly priced software.”

New features in ACDSee 16 include:

  • Facebook uploader - Upload photos directly from ACDSee to Facebook, fast. Create a new album or select an existing one, add location and description details, and specify the privacy level.
  • Reverse geocoding - Select a pin on the map, choose “Reverse Geocode” and ACDSee will write the matching location details into the appropriate IPTC fields, using the embedded latitude and longitude information to lookup the nearest readable address or place name.
  • Info Palette - Access key shooting information while managing, viewing, and editing photos. The Info Palette conveniently displays technical data alongside any photo, including white balance, metering mode, exposure program, and whether the flash fired. Plus see the ISO, f-stop, shutter speed, exposure compensation, focal length, and more, all in one spot.
  • Gradient tool - Apply a gradient to any editing effect to subtly progress across a photo. It’s especially useful for images that aren’t evenly exposed, or that need fine tuning in select areas.
  • Lens blur filter - Attain a realistic bokeh effect with the Lens Blur filter. Choose the shape and adjust the bokeh frequency and brightness to emulate the pleasing visual artifacts that naturally appear around bright, out-of-focus areas of a photo.
  • Tilt-shift effect - Simulate the popular Tilt-Shift effect to transform a photo into a miniature-scale model. Rotate the lens plane, adjust the bokeh frequency, brightness, and sides, and increase saturation to get the perfect scene.

ACDSee 16 also offers these key features to help photographers organize, perfect and share their images:

  • Organize with ease - Create categories, add hierarchical keywords and phrases, and rate photos. Tag images and assign color labels, and bring them all together for further editing or sharing. Save time by organizing photos as they’re imported from a camera or storage device.
  • Find any photo - Find any photo fast. Enter keywords, search only specific folders, narrow it down by metadata, or find that one special image with the Quick Search bar. Build and save detailed searches for ongoing use.
  • View images fast - Zoom through the latest shots, examine details, and enjoy full-size views without waiting, thanks to ACDSee’s renowned speed.
  • Brush on edits - Experiment with intuitive editing tools and creative filters that deliver professional results. Use the Edit Brush to quickly apply any editing effect to a specific part of a photo. Correct exposure, enhance color, adjust details, or add a special effect.
  • Get the best light and color - Rescue photos that are too light or too dark with the Lighting tool, powered by ACDSee’s patented LCE (Lighting and Contrast Enhancement) technology. Instantly lighten shadows and reduce highlights in one click, or adjust individual sliders to fine-tune every aspect. Change the tonal range, white balance, and color balance of photos with easy-to-use adjustment tools.
  • Photo sharing and backup - Drop images straight from ACDSee 16 to the ACDSee Online cloud for safe backup, storage, and sharing via email, Facebook, and Twitter. Each ACDSee Online account includes 10 GB of storage space with the option to upgrade to unlimited storage for only $39.99/year (US).

Introductory offer price $49.99

Automator workflow to open GH2 stream folder https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6707/automator-workflow-to-open-gh2-stream-folder Tue, 16 Apr 2013 09:41:41 +0000 rsquires 6707@/talks/discussions I am trying to automate the process of getting to the Stream folder in Mac OSX. It would be great to be able to drag the SD card folder onto an application that opened the stream folder so you can access the raw mts files. In automator you can use a process called Watch me Do and this basically records your mouse movements and menu options. I have basically run through the usual way, highlighting Private -show package contents, etc. It seems to record all the entries but when I run it, it barfs and falls over at the first Show package contents. I think this would be really useful for the Mac OSX folks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, in getting some sort of automation set up

Just wrapped a shoot of mixed RED One and GH2. I have a few shots that require some VFX in AE. Basically using a travel matte of high contrast ink in water to simulate a woman's dress changing dye color. Some of these shots are RED and some are GH2. What would be the best way to go about this while maintaining as much of the raw capabilities of the r3d format.

Mountain Lion updated to 10.8.3. Windows 8 Boot Camp support. Cuda Updated https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3877/-mountain-lion-updated-to-10.8.3.-windows-8-boot-camp-support.-cuda-updated Thu, 12 Jul 2012 12:33:50 +0000 driftwood 3877@/talks/discussions Having just looked at the Gold Master release of OSX Mountain Lion there appears to be a little problem opening our mts files straight from the card for viewing. It seems the Private folder is registered to open with Quicktime X, and, although you get to see your thumbnails of your card's clips, when you double-click to open each of the mts streams you are met with a 'Document Could Not Be Opened... unknown error' on the "BDMV" folder.

You then have to Right-Click 'Show Package Contents' to Get inside each subfolder, down to the Stream folder before you can open your .mts files for playback. This also happens whether registered mts files are with movist or not.

Let's hope they sort out native support of the AVC/mts/mpeg-4/h264 standard before the release version!

Update: With 10.8.3 The same problem persists with opening SD cards' MTS files. You'll have to go through the usual Open Package Contents or rename the Private Folder to get inside the folder tree.

SD Formatter vs In-Camera Formatting https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6320/sd-formatter-vs-in-camera-formatting Mon, 04 Mar 2013 11:20:27 +0000 matt_gh2 6320@/talks/discussions Is formatting your SD cards in SD Formatter important, or are we just fine formatting in-camera? I use Sandisk 64 GB 95 Mbps with my GH2 and have recently started seeing a lost.dir folder appear. Not sure if this has to do with formatting or not.

So is SD formatter needed and if so which version/where to download?

Thanks

Program that indexes HD drive for search only https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6306/program-that-indexes-hd-drive-for-search-only Sat, 02 Mar 2013 10:39:52 +0000 Riker 6306@/talks/discussions I'm organizing my backup HDD's, and I'm wondering is there a program out there that can make some sort of virtual directory of every file on that drive so I can save that info on my main computer and use it to locate the actual drive where the file is located on.

I'm not sure if I'm describing this clearly enough, I'm from far away from USA :D

This is basically what I'm looking for;

  • program scans and stores the entire directory tree of my Backup HD's, creates some kind of searchable file
  • I save that on my main PC and when I want to find something, I don't need to plug each and every backup HD I just need to browse thru that virtual directory of my HD's

Am I making sense here? :D

Thanks for help :)

Issue with Macbook Pro 13 2011/SD Card https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6161/issue-with-macbook-pro-13-2011sd-card Sun, 17 Feb 2013 16:33:50 +0000 Hakosuka 6161@/talks/discussions Hi I done a search but couldn't find anything related to my problem.

When using my Sandisk 64GB 95Mbps card and Macbook Pro I get error code 36 when trying to copy MTS files to the desktop. It's very temperamental and I haven't been able to fix it. It works fine if I use a USB card reader. The only issue is when I'm using OS X and the in built reader. Ironically the in built reader works fine when I boot into a Windows bootcamp so I believe the problem lies within OS X. Has anyone else got the same combination and have the same issue? I also get this issue with the 8GB version of this card. I've tried formatting both within camera and software.

The only way I'm able to really copy files from my card is to keep taking it out and putting it back in until it eventually copies over completely.

Faster FAT32 write speed using new formatter? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5865/faster-fat32-write-speed-using-new-formatter Tue, 22 Jan 2013 05:58:27 +0000 _gl 5865@/talks/discussions I just heard about this utility that formats FAT32 devices (like memory cards) with a better alignment - it's supposed increase write speed: http://reboot.pro/topic/16783-rmprepusb-faster-fat32-access-test-version/ I have no time to test this now, maybe someone wants to check it out.

People are reporting write increases of ~20%, but this is tested on a PC and maybe that won't translate to cameras. Worth comparing with their in-built formatting though, might help with marginal card/hack combinations.

Amazon Glacier - cheap backup for large things https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4319/amazon-glacier-cheap-backup-for-large-things Tue, 21 Aug 2012 10:48:44 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 4319@/talks/discussions Amazon Glacier is an extremely low-cost storage service that provides secure and durable storage for data archiving and backup. In order to keep costs low, Amazon Glacier is optimized for data that is infrequently accessed and for which retrieval times of several hours are suitable. With Amazon Glacier, customers can reliably store large or small amounts of data for as little as $0.01 per gigabyte per month, a significant savings compared to on-premises solutions.

You store data in Amazon Glacier as archives. An archive can represent a single file or you may choose to combine several files to be uploaded as a single archive. Retrieving archives from Amazon Glacier requires the initiation of a job. Jobs typically complete in 3.5 to 4.5 hours.

Media companies’ core assets are their content which includes books, movies, music, images, news footage, and TV shows. The number and size of these assets continues to grow, driven by new production and new technologies such as high-definition TV, social media and 3D video. These assets can grow to tens or hundreds of petabytes. Safely and securely storing these assets is of critical importance. Data accessibility is also critical. For example, certain archival news footage can suddenly become valuable based on unfolding events. Archiving media has traditionally required costly, multi-site, redundant data centers and offsite vaulting. Amazon Glacier reduces the cost of storing these assets while simultaneously increasing the durability, ease of use, and accessibility of the content. Accessing media files in Amazon Glacier is as simple as making calls to the service’s APIs. Customers don’t need to worry about transporting storage media from offsite facilities in order to restore data.

sadly I don´t have the time nor skills to join the battle for best compression settings. So I simply took driftwoods 132 GOP 3 settings as given for the moment, recorded some flat surfaces and threw this into Neat Video. Then tweaked a little, checked with real footage. All 24H, Nostalgic -2, -2, -1, -2, shutter 50... any idea if this matters? I guess FPS will.. but does shutter as well?

However, here is my outcome, not scientific in any way, be warned. If you can do better.. let us know.

(Make sure to set temporal filter ratio at least to 2, so Mister Clean knows enough about the past and the future to make the right decisions...)]]>
