North Thailand mountain trekking vlog - DJI OSMO + Rode VideoMicro

I've recently started making some vlogs of mountain treks in north Thailand; a completely new diversion from my usual underwater videos.

This is the latest one from the summit of Doi Pha Hom Pok, Thailand's 2nd-highest mountain, followed by a pleasant descent along the National Park's nature trail.

Shot with a DJI OSMO + Rode VideoMicro, and a Sony RX100 mk1, edited in VEGAS Pro. It was the first outing with the VideoMicro and I am very impressed, although it can be a bit limiting for dialog as it is so directional.

I would appreciate any feedback.

I'm currently working as a videographer for like 10 months right now. Mostly 'specialized' in doing guerrilla style music videos. My goal is to achieve the high budget look, with the low budget costs (don't we all).

Gear used on both videos:

Panasonic GH2 cam with flowmotion hack
Two Minolta MD lenses, 28mm F1.8 and 50mm F.17
Sigma 19mm F2.8
Mostly shot with: a rig, tripod, table slider and handheld

My goal is to eventually work more with commercial artists and especially to learn as much as possible about cinematography and cinematic aspects used in music videos.

Would love to receive some feedback on both videos!

GH4 Astrophotography (Milky Way)

With the upcoming wide angle beauties I can't wait to get a good one for astrophotography. I was in La Palma last week and I took a good shot of the milky way. Had to stitch it together as my fastest lens wasn't really wide (25mm 1.4). Turned out pretty well still. Did anyone make any milky way shots with the GH4? I can't find a lot myself, or some very crappy ones.

Thoughts and comments are appreciated :)

This was shot many moons ago (2010) when I was in college for the second time. Graduated a few years before that but I decided to go again to get another degree. Me and other students were involved in this video and it was quickly put together so their was some obvious technical difficulties. Still didn't turn out that too bad. Most of the camera work was done by me (Indoor shots) using the Panasonic HVX200.

Theirs a ton of short films that people have done while in college or elsewhere that never gets put online which is too bad because their are a lot of gems out their.

I Directed a no-budget Game of Thrones Fan Film - 30% GH4 & G7

Last year, myself and a friend wrote a Game of Thrones Fan Film script and gathered a crew of enthusiatic and talented people trying to break into the local industry. The show is filmed where I live in Belfast and we were trying to make ourselves known. I directed the film, although I shot small portions on G7 as either B cam or when the DP was unavailable.

Here's the finished film.

It was mainly filmed on the FS700 with the firmware upgrade that turns it into a 4K beast. Some scenes shot with GH4 and G7, and even a few LX100 B cam shots. Personally, I think it shows that money is best spent elsewhere as long as you have a half decent and reliable camera system. It was a massive headache though matching vintage lenses on GH4 to more the modern canon and panasonic glass, nightmare. Don't do it, stick to one or the other.

JAWAI - A Tale of Humans, Landscapes and Wildlife

Rarely have I been moved that deeply by a travel experience as it was the case when I visited the area of Jawai in Rajasthan, India. The raw beauty of the landscape, the inhabitants, the way they live their lifes in harmony with the wildlife of this area, and how their deep rooted culture and spiritual belief helped to conserve the biodiversity.

This is one of the rare places on earth where wild leopards and humans live together in peace.

I am very grateful to my friend Parag, who showed me this exceptional area. We had less than 48 hours to experience the place, yet I was completely fascinated. This is a magical land - an emotion which I am trying to convey by this film.

I hope that it stays this way - hence a somewhat sad undertone. You have to invest a little bit of time into this film, but I hope it is worth it for you!

Some foley and the sounddesign was made by my brother Stefan Machu - a big thank you goes to you!
