Shot on 7D. We used quite a few lenses, the 70-200 2.8L, can't remember the focal length of the tilt shift, standard 50mm, 10mm, 60mm. Not that they were all necessary, but hey its fun to experiment.

How I was both excited and disappointed! I could have really used the hack to boost the shadow details.
The following video was shot using only Lomo prime lenses.

Other than the fact that today's hacks allow us to shoot up to crazily 176mbps, has it changed your shooting style or film making method?

Thanks for watching

80Mbit MJPEG 4:3 for 2x anamorphic shooting https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/350/80mbit-mjpeg-43-for-2x-anamorphic-shooting Thu, 07 Jul 2011 14:58:02 +0000 EOSHD 350@/talks/discussions
No settings for this apart from the resolution / size change as was default in PTools for MJPEG.

Today I am testing new MJPEG encoder settings for improved image quality.

I have started off with these settings by CRFilms and LPowell as a basis http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/comment/1762#Comment_1762

The purpose of these settings is for those with 2x stretch anamorphic lenses to get true 2.35:1 cinemascope from the GH2, rather than the more extreme 3.55:1 aspect ratio generated the lenses when used in 1080p 16:9 mode. I much prefer the less extreme cinema standard of 2.35:1 or 2.39:1, since that is what these anamorphic lenses were intended to make with 4:3 35mm film.

Today I have found MJPEG settings that seem to work well for recording quality and so sharing them here. I'll also share my further tests here. There is always room for improvement and new discoveries. The GH2 is good hardware, faster than the GH1 so who knows how high we can push it?

Rather than use 1440x1080, 1280x960 is necessary to avoid corruption, unexpected clip curtailment and enable the much higher bitrates.

Bitrate with my settings is approx. 80Mbit (variable). VLC Player reports a stream between 65,000kb and 85,000kb per second. 80,000kb is 78Mbit (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&safe=off&biw=1504&bih=877&q=80000+kb+in+megabits&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=). Please correct me if I am wrong on anything technical. The footage looks great so far in this mode.

I need to do more reliability testing and see how far we can push it. Yet to find the final 'sweet-spot' but these settings are a good starting point for fellow testers.

480p Width: 1280
480p Height: 960
F1 Quality=280
F1 Table=4
F2 Quality=250
F2 Table=10
F3 Quality=225
F3 Table=24
F4 Quality=200
F4 Table=48

Lens was a LOMO 35mm 2x anamorphic in OCT18 mount.

I did not change any other settings.

A big thanks to Vitaliy and every tester, giving up valuable time for the good of the community. I salute you! - Andrew]]>

I know this is far from a raw MTS file... I had to compress it to 90mb to make the file fast and easy to upload (the promotional nature of the video didn't leave me with much time - I needed to get this out the door ASAP). But, to me, this video shows how nicely the visual quality holds up.

Canon FD 50mm 1.4, set on f1.4, just a regular house lamp for light (with my V96 LED pointed at the back wall with a purple gel over it, to give you something to look at). 24p, highest quality settings on the cam. ]]>

What I did was play with some extreme settings to see what (if any) I could recover in the shadow areas. You can see in the next clip I lowered the contrast a bit. Then in the following clip I lowered the contrast and highlighted the shadow areas. It's a bit extreme....but this was purposely done to see how far I could push the image. Before the hack...most of this would have been a noisy mess (compression artifacts/smeary dark areas/macroblocks etc). What the hack allows is for detail to stay put in the dark areas with a lot less hassle. In the last image I just highlighted the shadows of the original file. That would be the optimal setting I'd apply for an image like this. Others may do differently....but at least we have somewhat of an option now.

For those who claim they don't see any benefit of the hack vs the stock video....I'd say this is good enough evidence "favoring" the hack. imageimageimageimage]]>

The 48 Hour Film Project is a wild and sleepless weekend in which you and a team make a movie—write, shoot, edit and score it—in just 48 hours. On Friday night, you get a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre, all to include in your movie. 48 hours later, the movie must be complete. Then it will show at a local theater, usually in the next week.

So we took the genre "Film Noir", and the prop was a "ladybug" this is the result, shot on a Canon 60D with a old Nikon 50mm f1.4 AI-S and a Tokina 11-16mm f2.8, let me know what yáll think:

GH2 Footage - "Shack in the Back" Music Video https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/779/gh2-footage-shack-in-the-back-music-video Fri, 26 Aug 2011 18:56:49 +0000 David_Cole 779@/talks/discussions

Background
These shots were taken as pick-ups to be included in the more complex, official "Shack in the "Back with Us" music video. The official video is produced/edited by LA filmmaker Todd Segal which includes fancy cars, flying objects and more complex elements.

This edit is intended to provide material for filmmakers using or considering the GH system as a filmmaking tool.

Camera used for this shoot:
Filmed entirely with Panasonic Gh2 (hacked).

Lenses:
Standard Panasonic 4/3 lenses...
Primary... 14 - 140mm w/ OS on
100-300mm w/OS on... used sparingly
7-14mm was used for one shot... overhead crane-up shot from drums.

Settings
Motion JPEG/HD, 30fps

Support Gear
Entire shoot was hand held, excepting a couple of specialty shots (crane up from drums and rotation shot in which a basic 557B Manfrotto mono-pod was used. (The OS on both the 14-140mm and the 100-300mm are exceptional and greatly minimize stability issues).

Edit:
The footage is straight out of the camera as shot, except processing to remove some sensor noise (^ISO) which was prominent in a few clips. Neat Video was used (fantastic plug-in) for this purpose... and only in automatic mode.

Posted on Final Cut 7. (I did not find FCPX to be useful for this edit. (Just couldn't quite make the jump due to multi- clip sync issues)

Lighting:
Two or three desk lamps

Production:
About 3 hours of shooting. Filmed at Shack in the Back Studios. (somewhere out there:)

VIDEO
Director, DP, Editor... Robert Bruce Baldwin
(aka robert da bruce:) big stick prod.
co-producer... Ellen Bukstel (aka Queen Bee:)
featuring: Brett Segal (The General) and Carla Barberis (Jampony Firefunk)

MUSIC
Title: Shack In The Back with Us
Artist: The General (Brett Segal) feat. Anton, Jmic, Jennifer Sidney
Music/Producer: The General (Brett Segal)
Lyrics: The General (Brett Segal), Jmic and Anton
Label: Shack In The Back Productions and Polyrhythm Publishing

Official Release
The official (music video) will be released in the very near future and will include elements filmed by Todd Segal which were previously shot entirely on the GH1 hack platform. Should be interesting to compare the Gh1/Gh2 platforms in the same mix. Stay turned

Special thanks to Brett and Carla and the all the unmentioned super beings at Shack in the Back! ... RBB]]>
