If we provide you with the translation files, could you add small flags corresponding to the other languages ? I would take care of french, I'm sure other members will do the same for their language, we could use this post to list the on-going translations to avoid people doing the same work.

Moving to Stockholm https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2202/moving-to-stockholm Sun, 05 Feb 2012 15:44:25 +0000 chauncy 2202@/talks/discussions Hej.

I'll be moving to stockholm next month with my family. I lived there in the 90s. I could use some advice in the following areas:

1) where do you get camera gear? - what are the best stores in town - what happens when you buy something from amazon or bh? I assume you get hit with the 25% mums tax but what else?

2) Where are the best places to connect with people who make short films? Students are fine but where else?

I'm not a film professional but want to do small budget high-quality shorts.

Thanks for any thoughts/

Like the one in this picture: http://oliviatech.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/friction-arm-kamerar-400x295.jpg I'm talking about the bolt with washer going straight up in the top of the picture.

" the Establishment in New York and Washington want to manage the Decline of the USA so long as they win..."

He is of course only saying this to gain the VOTES of upset Americans and Tea party voters now that he looks to be losing momentum, but sometimes the Truth comes out when politicians are backed into a corner and sinking fast...

Desktop PC https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2147/desktop-pc- Mon, 30 Jan 2012 16:56:40 +0000 Diffusion33 2147@/talks/discussions Hi everyone,

My mac laptop has finally given up and it is time to upgrade. Since i'm doing a lot of music, photography and now video since acquiring a GH2 in january (which is giving me great joy), i'm considering splashing out on a dell XPS 8300 Desktop going all out Max memory, max graphics and a raid hard drive....

Has anyone got any suggestions apart from this beast would be greatly appreciated. Please no mac chat! i have been burnt. I must say their customer service was great but the machine itself was not up to the job and kept breaking down at the most critical of times making me look like an ass loosing me good gigs.

I currently have a decent enough samsung screen but i will be upgrading to a 32inch LED screen in a few months for video work and pleasure.

Thanks

GH2 Color Banding Bashing https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1084/-gh2-color-banding-bashing Sat, 01 Oct 2011 09:52:54 +0000 Maxwell77 1084@/talks/discussions I had always problems with color banding with my GH2. For this reason I tried the hack. I am very disappointed that the color banding problem is still alive. I cannot use my GH2 for professional work. No way...The color banding in blue clear skies is awful. The hack was my last chance to keep this camera... The higher bitrate do not change this behaviour. Perhaps it is not possible to solve this issue. Probably the 8 Bit is the problem. Did anyone found a solution?

Most of this is greek to me, but a couple of parts stuck out:

"Under some circumstances, the improvement can be dramatic — a tenfold increase in speed. The new algorithm could be particularly useful for image compression, enabling, say, smartphones to wirelessly transmit large video files without draining their batteries or consuming their monthly bandwidth allotments."

"An eight-by-eight block of pixels can be thought of as a 64-sample signal, and thus as the sum of 64 different frequencies. But as the researchers point out in their new paper, empirical studies show that on average, 57 of those frequencies can be discarded with minimal loss of image quality."

The blackout is a protest against proposed legislation in the United States—the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in the U.S. House of Representatives, and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA) in the U.S. Senate—that, if passed, would seriously damage the free and open Internet, including Wikipedia.

Mario Kart Wii is hacked too ! https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2060/mario-kart-wii-is-hacked-too- Thu, 19 Jan 2012 06:07:18 +0000 lenuisible 2060@/talks/discussions After 2 years I've taken my Wii out of the closet last week to play with friends, and it reminded me how good MarioKart Wii is. So I searched to see if something had been done, and good surprise, for almost 2 years, you can play custom maps (there is something like 128 maps in the pack I dl !), just using a normal Wii and a SD card : http://www.mariokartwii.com/f72/play-custom-tracks-only-sd-card-no-61493.html

Didn't tested all of them, a lot are not very good, but some are fun.

CES 2012 Commentary: Has Apple actually slowed the rate of technological Progress? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1996/ces-2012-commentary-has-apple-actually-slowed-the-rate-of-technological-progress Fri, 13 Jan 2012 03:16:50 +0000 NickBen 1996@/talks/discussions Has Apple actually slowed the rate of technological Progress over the last 3 years?

I ask, because as I look at my receipts over the last several decades, 80's, 90's, 00's, I notice one thing...

Over the last 3 years, the pursuit of "Green", thin, small, portable, flash-based and interconnected Apple iPhone/iPad competition has actually slowed the pace of technological innovation overall...

We are still buying tiny 2TB 7200rpm drives after 3 years, instead of 15,000 rpm 5TB drives? Hard drive warranties went from 5 years to 90 days on some models? Quad CPU desktops are nowhere to be seen anymore... More green low-power cores are preferred to the fun raw Megahertz races? I have a 3 year old Acer laptop with Blu-ray player and 1080p 18.4" Screen, that smokes upcoming 2012 Ultrabooks? I used to get UNLIMITED voice and Data for $60, and NOW In the US, we pay big bucks for low-speed wireless data with GB caps! $30 Paid basic cable has standard definition VIDEO, which is actually WORSE than free 1080 over the air signals! Apple Thunderbolt over copper with few devices instead of Light Peak over optical? SD association released UHS-2 standard a year ago, and nobody has released a single device!

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate Apple-inspired price drops on small SSD's and RAM and social media, but that's about the only residual benefit as far as I can tell, which I think would have come along anyway.

Am I the only guy that would prefer the glory days when Progress meant things got faster, bigger and ate more power and space, when Full Tower cases included Power supplies, motherboards supported quad CPU's, Tube Monitors looked great and weighed a ton (My Viewsonic 17" tube hasn't quit from 1993, I sold my 21" Cad monitor a decade ago), and 18.4" Power Laptops ate batteries in a single DVD showing?

just a random thought for 2012 on my 3 year old 1080p BlueRay laptop bought from Meijers for under $1000...

PS. Apple haters need not bash, I am commenting on general technology progress that chases Apple's direction (and profit margin) ... no dislike intended for Steve Jobs or Apple product users.

Putting US Debt in Perspective https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1885/putting-us-debt-in-perspective Sat, 31 Dec 2011 11:08:44 +0000 qwerty123 1885@/talks/discussions
So the big rise in US debt hasn’t been accompanied by an equally big rise in our net obligations to foreigners. And in the past few years, as the budget deficit has exploded, the trade deficit has actually been lower than pre-crisis –which says that the big recent rise in debt is very much a rise in the amount Americans owe other Americans, not a matter of selling IOUs to foreigners.

Again, I’m not saying that debt is never a problem. But it’s not the kind of problem people imagine."

(It'd be interesting to see exactly who owes the US money.)

A laser pulse that lasts less than one trillionth of a second is used as a flash and the light returning from the scene is collected by a camera at a rate equivalent to roughly 1 trillion frames per second. However, due to very short exposure times (roughly one trillionth of a second) and a narrow field of view of the camera, the video is captured over several minutes by repeated and periodic sampling.
