I need a portable monitor I could mount on my GH3 or rig it for monitoring my Mac Pro (2013 version). I'd prefer a 9" version but I hope 7" would do the job as well.

This is what I want to use it for: I'm doing live streaming lessons but I need to monitor Skype at the same time to see what the student is doing. As I'll be completely surrounded by lights and cameras there is no way for me to place my thunderbolt monitor (too many things could go wrong).

Would it be possible to use a DSLR field monitor for this? And what would be a good choice?

I don't need colour fidelity, or peaking or any of those features(nice if they're there of course), most important thing is quality of the image and size of the screen: definitely not below 7" and preferably 9" and above.

I have no idea if dslr monitors can be used this way but I'm sure some of you do!

Thanks for reading this,

André

Only a few cuts with a hacksaw and file were required. Basically I sawed off the bottom lip and widened the horizontal dimensions of an aftermarket Hoodman eyecup.

It almost makes the EVF usable.

I just did one day run with Wondlan stabiliser doing wedding video. Stabiliser is great and it's extendible rod is actually extremely useful. The problem is framing. So I was wondering about installing cheep FPV camera on GH2 screen and connect it wireless with single eye video goggles (like this: http://shop.reconinstruments.com/Product/MODLive/900-00007) Has anyone seen any other single eye video goggles that could be used for this?

Essentially I have this jpeg and I have to make the camera "think" it is one of its photos, but I just can't can't. I tried by using an original photo, editing it (pasting the bars image inside), then savong it, but the camera doesn't recognize it on playback. I also copied metadata etc but nothing. Have anyone had luck with this and how? Or, can anyone just post a working calibration image file that can be read by GH cameras? That would be extremely useful. Thanks!!

$50 (3G)HD-SDI to HDMI converter (quick review) https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9245/50-3ghd-sdi-to-hdmi-converter-quick-review Thu, 02 Jan 2014 09:14:27 +0000 hempo22 9245@/talks/discussions Just thought I would give a quick "review" of an SDI to HDMI converter that just arrived. And by review I mean: List my equipment and say if it works or not with that combination. I couldn't find anything on this particular el cheapo one when scanning the forums so here we go!

It came without a box, just a padded envelope. The converter and the power supply was wrapped in plastic. The power had an american socket and and type f adapter (just what we use in Sweden). Input voltage is 5-12v.

According to the eBay seller I ordered from (and the manual that came with it) it said to support the following input/output resolutions:

  • 480i, 576i, 720p, 1080i @ 50/59,94/60
  • 1080p @ 23,98/24/25/29,97/30/50/59,94/60

On the BMCC 2.5K MFT + Zacuto EVF 1080i50/60 worked fine, so did 1080p25/29,97/30. 23,98 and 24p did not. I got "unsupported format" on the Zacuto display (latest firmware).

No big deal for me since I'm shooting 25p, but people who need an adapter and shoot 24p to use with their Zacutos, beware.

EDIT: 23.98 and 24p works on the converter. Hooked it up to my Samsung TV and sure enough, I get an image. Which is weird since the Zacuto manual states 1080p24. Time to contact them.

I can also add that audio passes trough and I get metering on the EVF.

For the money I'm not gonna complain and this will do till I can afford an Alphatron or whatever comes out this year that I will settle on. It's light and will stick easily on your rig with some velcro.

Idea of a new design for viewfinders/displayloupes... opinions? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8842/idea-of-a-new-design-for-viewfindersdisplayloupes...-opinions Thu, 21 Nov 2013 04:51:16 +0000 Illusionist_Films 8842@/talks/discussions What I've ever really been missing in present cameras is a proper viewfinder: I'm talking about the sort of angled viewfinder cameras like Aaton XTR or Arri Alexa are equipped with, where you're able to have the camera on one of your sides when looking through. The only thing nowadays digital cameras are most probably equipped with is a display. I know there are a lot of solutions like display loupes or EVF's, but I don't think any of them being comfortable. I don't like the idea of adding more bulk to the camera with an EVF, as you're not solely adding the EVF but also a proper mounting solution, powering and have the hdmi/sdi cables hanging around (not to mention that good EVF's are pretty expensive and most people already use a monitor which adds enough bulk and cables etc..). So go to the display loupe way? Well, I think most display loupes available are absolutely unflexible as you've to position the camera right in front of your eyes. That's neither convenient nor always possible, depending on tripod, rig or other accessories. The only design I liked was that of the Varavon Loupe EX for GH1/2 (even though i never owned one) as it used the flexibility of the flip- and rotateable display. But again the mobility of the viewfinder depended on the display. So what about cameras with a fixed display like BMPCC? I've come up with the idea for a fully rotateable display loupe using mirrors or prisms inside to work like a kind of magnificating periscope. As I don't have the manual abilities nor the knowledge to built something like this I thought I'd share my thoughts here. I've attached a rough schematic diagramm to visualize it. I know the market for this would be marginal but do you believe this to be useful? Probably theres something similar to this already existing and I just don't know it? I'd like to hear some opinions, suggestions... if someone has the mechanical skills to built this or wants to refine/improve the idea... feel free to do it ;)

After searching for a different solution to try and get a monitor stand so I could put a monitor on my lap(don't ask), I found this:
$400 IPS, does full 1080p touchscreen, and is powered by USB with HDMI and VGA. It's currently sold out though, but the 13" model is in stock and on sale $138 with today as the last day for that price. You can find similar models on ebay for around $210. That one only goes to 720p and no IPS or touch. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA0V108S5365

The smaller models only need 5v 1A, you could easily power them off lots of batteries out there. I'm tempted, but I'm not going to make any more major purchases until BlackFriday or after. http://www.gechic.com/product_help_en.asp?s=10

Field monitor calibration for shooting https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7089/field-monitor-calibration-for-shooting Tue, 28 May 2013 10:43:09 +0000 flablo 7089@/talks/discussions Hi, I have a Marshall V-LCD50-HDMI which I use with GH2 and GH3. I noticed the image being completely different from the one I get on the camera screen and in the recorded file. Anyone has tips/thoughts on this? Here on PV I only found tips on computer monitor calibration, not on field monitor.

This is my experience: looking for calibration tips, I found this

which seems pretty good. Anyway the first problem is getting a color bars reference image on the monitor: I tried taking some native jpegs stills, modifying them placing the bars over the image image and then saving, but nor GH2 or GH3 accepted to read the image. I finally managed through a minidv camcorder connected to FC to record and display the image on the monitor, and followed the procedure from the tutorial. Anyway during my last shoot I realized the image was once more different than what I was recording, so I'm somehow back at the beginning. The V-LCD50 is not really a lower-end monitor and it should perform decently in terms of color, so I'm quite upset for not being able to use it as a reference.

Thanks

I've got a GH2 and am purchasing a Lanparte shoulder rig soon. Trying to decide if I should go with an EVF (DP4) or monitor (AC7) for focus/framing. The advantages of the EVF seem to be extra point of contact for stability and better viewing outside. For the monitor, I like the idea of seeing where I am going when handheld, run & gun on my own. Also Like the idea of using it when the camera s mounted to a slider or small jib.

Can't afford to do both.
