Wide angle + general purpose m43 lens, speedbooster? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9847/wide-angle-general-purpose-m43-lens-speedbooster Tue, 11 Mar 2014 08:50:18 +0000 ingrid 9847@/talks/discussions Hi,

This is my first post to this forum, so hi :)

I am a total amateur photographer. I shoot video and photos for my hair salon/store small business (interviews, tutorials, promos). My boyfriend got me a GH3 for my birthday, and it is really the best of both worlds. I'm just starting to get into the details of the camera functionality, but already, my videos and stills are looking incredible.

I got the camera with the panasonic 25mm 1.4 lens (50mm eq. on a 35mm camera). So it's great for portraiture, interview tutorials, but I would like some additional flexibility, so I've come here for some general purpose recommendations.

for wide angle, right now I am considering the Olympus 12mm f/2 or the Panasonic 7-14. Both are in the 700-900$ range. For general purpose, I was thinking of getting the new panasonic 14-140 3.5-5.6, since it has Image Stabilisation and I understand I would be needing that at any length over 50mm full frame equivalent. This lens is currently selling on amazon for $600.

For the price of these two, I am wondering if I should splurge a little more and get the Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8. I can live without a zoom more than without a wide angle.

Otherwise, the other option I've been investigating is getting a speed booster and have access to some manual lenses. I know next to nothing about the legacy lenses that work well with the speedbooster adapters, so I'm wondering if it's something worth investigated since many of the lenses can be had for cheap. For wide angle, AF and IS are not required (will be getting a good tripod soon anyways), so this is something I am potentially really interested in. Can anyone recommend a lens line+speedbooster that can give me a open up a lot of possibilities (lenses should be readily available)?

With a speedbooster doing .71x, my calculation tells me I should be looking at 15-20mm FF equivalent lenses, is this correct?

Thanks for your help guys ;)

Good inexpensive and/or used zoom lenses suggestions ? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9934/good-inexpensive-andor-used-zoom-lenses-suggestions- Thu, 20 Mar 2014 18:26:02 +0000 monks19 9934@/talks/discussions Hi. I'm looking for good inexpensieve zoom lenses (new or used) that can be mounted directly on a GH2 with or without this lens turbo (http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9086/rj-lens-turbo-m43-adapters/p1) ?

Any advices on those I should get for a beginner with the GH2 ? It's mostly to shooting, events and weddings, which I was shooting earlyer with a Sony DSR-PD170 camcorder.

Thanks to answer

Lens Mount Investment Dilemma https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9909/lens-mount-investment-dilemma- Tue, 18 Mar 2014 14:27:50 +0000 matticusmaximus 9909@/talks/discussions Not sure if this is in the proper topic. And I know there's no real solid answer to this question as it is all just user opinion. However I'll ask anyway and see what people think. I am currently using a GH2, but I am starting to save now for something more serious in the future. I realize the GH2 is capable of amazing video, but I want something more friendly to run and gun setups, with built-in ND proper audio inputs and so on. More video oriented than hybrid. (Of course if it happens to take nice stills I won't count that against it.) The question is, if I want to spend some on lenses now, which mount do I get? Native m43 lenses are nice for what I have now, but that limits me if I change to something with a larger sensor in the future and generally seem more expensive for the equivalent focal lengths. Canon lenses are nice, but there are no active mounts for m43 and I don't currently own a canon to change aperture so they would be a pain to use currently. Nikons are the most universal it seems, but there's very little chance I'll end up with something that uses them natively since they are behind in video quality at this point...I haven't invested much in glass yet and I'm just not sure which way to go....

This really intrigued me. After all, those lenses looks AMAZING from what I've seen picture-wise. What I want to know is how they are to use? From what I understand, there is no way to use them on a follow focus... I might be able to live with that, if the rest works. Also, I understand Ciecio7 is the best adapter to get for these, right? Question is basically, how much hassle is it? Is it worth it?

I should add that these are spherical, not anamorphics, but still!]]>

Typical length is 65 minutes and I like being in them.

My camera is set for AF-F and it has been working well. I am not looking for manual lens as I will not be behind the GH4.

My current lens are the 12-35 f/2.8 and 14-140 f/4-5.8. I am looking for something to use in poor-low light.

I am considering the Lumix 20mm f/1.7, Leica 25 f/1.2, and 42.5 f1.2 and Zuiko 17 f1.8, 25 f1.8, 45 f1.8, and 12-40mm f/2.8

I am sure that there is a topic here about this- however I can't find it after searching half the day.

I am wanting to know if the 14-140mm standard zoom lens is good for matte box usage etc... if not is there another lens? I mainly (only) use primes, so zoom would be just for documentary work. (so auto focus needed for run and gun)

Please let me know your thoughts, lots of guys on PV don't really have much nice to say regarding the 14-140, I have also used it and it is quite slow... :(

Thanks in advance...

1/2-inch ENG zoom lenses and mounting solutions https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5862/12-inch-eng-zoom-lenses-and-mounting-solutions Mon, 21 Jan 2013 21:08:50 +0000 balazer 5862@/talks/discussions The 1/2-inch format has an image circle diameter of 8 mm, which is very close to the GH2's 1080 ETC-mode diagonal of 8.3 mm.

1/2-inch format ENG lenses are made for 3-CCD cameras. The standard specifies an amount of glass behind the lens for the prism and color filters. It also specifies slightly different flange focal distances for green than for red and for blue. Since the GH2 has no prism and has its color sensors all in the same plane, these lenses are not perfectly matched for the GH2. In my testing, at wide aperture settings the image becomes hazy due to some focus aberration - I'm guessing mostly because of the absence of glass behind the lens. Stopping down to f/4 or so mostly fixes the haziness. In theory, the lack of glass behind the lens could be corrected with nothing more than a flat block of glass between the lens and the sensor. It would take more complicated optics to correct for the differences in the flange focal distances of the different colors, but I don't expect the longitudinal chromatic aberration to be very bad if this weren't corrected.

There are two 1/2-inch mounts: standard, and Sony. Most 1/2-inch lens models were made in both mounts. About two thirds of the used lenses for sale are in standard mount, and one third in Sony mount. I have attached sample images of the different mounts. The standard mount has a flange focal distance of 35.74 mm. The Sony mount has a flange focal distance of 38 mm.

ciecio7 on eBay makes a 1/2-inch Sony mount to Micro Four Thirds adapter: http://en.foto-akcesoria.com.pl/index.php/shop/product?idproduct=321&productname=1-2-quot-38-mount-mft

He also had a 1/2-inch standard mount to Micro Four Thirds adapter listed for sale, but I ordered the adapter and it was wrong. I'm sending my adapter back, but I'm sure someone could work with him to get him the proper specifications for a 1/2-inch standard mount adapter. The 1/2-inch standard mount is quite similar to the 2/3-inch B4 mount, except with a different flange focal distance. He already makes 2/3-inch B4 mount adapters.

Canon 1/2-inch ENG lens models:

  • KH: portable high def
  • H: portable
  • PH: studio/field
  • YH: portable pro standard def and pre-HD (semi-pro)

  • SX or SY in the servo unit model number indicates a Sony interface. IX, HX, or BX indicates a standard interface.

Fujinon 1/2-inch ENG lens models:

  • HS: premiere series high def, standard mount
  • HSs: premiere series high def, Sony mount
  • ZS: high def, standard mount
  • XS: high def, Sony mount
  • S: standard def and pre-HD

  • -38, -D38, -18, or -D18 suffix in the servo unit model number indicates a Sony interfaces. Suffixes with other numbers usually indicate a standard interface.

Standard definition lenses in most cases are more than capable of delivering HD resolutions, though not necessarily across the entire frame and at all focal lengths and aperture settings. HD lenses are made to a higher standard, and they cost a lot more.

Chips and Scratches on Lens Glass & Its Real Effects on Image Quality https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9728/chips-and-scratches-on-lens-glass-its-real-effects-on-image-quality Thu, 27 Feb 2014 15:17:50 +0000 fosterchen 9728@/talks/discussions Everybody wants to keep their lens glass in top shape right?
But what is the real world effects of having scratches and chips in the glass? Does it really show up in the image or is it merely cosmetic? I'm sure there is some psychological reasoning to wanting to have immaculate glass all the time, and having such scratches and even chips would rub most of us the wrong way, hence wanting to sell and replace the lens altogether.

I just bought a really nice lens for a very good price due to the fact it has a few chips and scratches on the front glass.
However, the seller states it has no effect on the image quality.
So I received the lens (a Canon FD 85mm F1.2 L), and initial tests do not show any signs of the chips or scratches, which is a win for me.

Does focal range matter concerning if the chip or scratch will show up in the image? I'm sure for macro lenses it would affect, but telephoto lenses might be more forgiving.

Anyone's thoughts and experiences in using chipped or scratched lenses, please provide!

What do you guys think about this lens as a single lens to shoot a narrative feature film. Our cinematographer wants to use one lens with a zoom as we are occasionally in cramped/tight locations, and the perfect shot is often between the fixed focal length lenses we have (18mm, 28, 50). I'm curious to see if anyone has any experience/knowledge of this lens' image quality, particularly when on a GH2 (will be using one of the Apocalypse Now settings. probably Boom - (thank you Driftwood))

The f 2.8 is pretty good for low light, but for very very low light we'll have ample lights at all time.

So what do you guys think...could this be one perfect lens?

Can't decide which one I should pick so if the community here could help me it would be very wonderful.

SETUP 1: Panasonic LUMIX G 20mm f/1.7, Sigma 30mm f/1.4, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II

SETUP 2: Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, Nikon 28mm f/2.8D AF Nikkor , Nikon 50mm f/1.4D AF Nikkor Lens

I'm going to be filming for the most part, short films, and I want lenses that will give me a nice cinematic feel? (can't find the right word to use here) But, just want to get your guys' opinions on these setups and what you guys think I should do. I am on a budget here so if you are going to make other suggestions for setups please try to keep it below $850. Thanks!

I am wondering about the right decision in choosing an anamorphic option. There are so many, that have become rareties in some respect. There is the Panasonic AG-LA7200 16:9 Anamorphic Lens Adapter, which is average price is 1000 dollars. Than we have a Century Precision adapter, which is harder to find, but a cheaper pick-up, that seems to provide intense flares. Now we also have the endless array of anamorphic projector lenses, adapted with lens clamps and such, that some say is better, and some say not so much. These include Kowa(which do look pretty nice sporting a 2x Anamorphic, ranging from 100 bucks to over 700, Isco-Optic focusing ana proj lens, and the Sankyoscope anamorphot 1.5x including a +0.5 diopter, focus through, which I haven't found for less than 1000 dollars, and I'm not sure how much the diopter will assist me, but anyhow there are many more, which I'm sure most are aware of. I am just hoping to get a little more insight into what the best and most effective options are.

Thank you Kindly, -Trev

Lenses to use with GH4 / 4K Cameras https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9575/lenses-to-use-with-gh4-4k-cameras Sun, 09 Feb 2014 13:37:30 +0000 JanH 9575@/talks/discussions I'm pretty excited about the potential of the GH4 (and I suppose any other 4K cameras at $2,000 or so). I am currently using the GH13, mainly in 720p mode with a variety of legacy full frame lenses. Canon FD, Minolta MD, Nikon, Helios, Pentax etc. These all produce a lovely image, less clinical than the Panasonic 14-140 kit lens, IMHO.

Now with 4k coming along, I'm wondering if these older lenses will have any chance of producing the detailed images that the higher resolution sensors are capable of. Or, whether the way forward would be to use an RJ or Metabones speed booster with these lenses to get the detail/ resolution? It would be a shame to not be able to get the benefits of 4k unless using m43 lenses.

Does anyone have any experience, or opinions on this subject? I'd appreciate any comments.

Best M 4/3rd interview lenses https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9411/best-m-43rd-interview-lenses Tue, 21 Jan 2014 11:04:52 +0000 IS2 9411@/talks/discussions Hey,

I'm looking for a great interview lens for my Panasonic GH2 and have become a bit stuck.

I got the Canon FD 50mm lens, but that's the equivalent of a 100mm on the GH2, so I have to be too far away from the subject for my liking.

I've been reading good things about the Panasonic 25mm 1.4 (equivalent to 50mm). It's a bit pricey for me, but I'm hoping to invest in a solid lens that will meet my needs and not require me to purchase another lens for quite some time. I need it to shoot interviews, with individuals and groups (bands), which will quite often be in low light venues.

I've heard the AF on the 20mm 1.7 is quite noisy for video, so I'm unsure that that's the right lens for my video interviews, but I've also heard that this is improved on the 25mm lens.

Are there any other options? Will the 25mm being a prime cause any problems? Will the 25mm be a decent general lens for walking around shooting too?

Thanks for any help in advance,

I've recently fallen in love with glidecam shots and want to shoot with it more :). I have shoot this vid (my second time using glidecam)

with glidecam hd-1000, gh2 and 20mm f1.7.

And here are my findings:

  • Love small weight of full set. Allows you to hold frame for long time.
  • Love low light performance of this lens.
  • I'm happy with focal lenght however never had oportunity to try wider angle. Common opinion is that they come out even better with stabiliser (however I'm quite happy with framing on this ocasion).
  • Didn't like slow AF I was loosing focus often and it took time to refocus (however that time I had "continuus AF" turned on, now I'll be refocusing on press of remote shutter).

Minding above criteria would you recomend an "ultimate" lens to work with stabiliser / glidecam ?

AFC is useless on all the lens except (maybe) on 14-140mm. I know that MF is the best option but for underwater use some housing doesn't have the focus ring so the half pressing the shutter button to trig the focus is the only way to get a decent autofocus.

Is this behavior (forced AFC) something triggered by the camera firmware or the lens firmware?

Lens Caps Fascination, New and Vintage https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9136/lens-caps-fascination-new-and-vintage Wed, 18 Dec 2013 12:36:05 +0000 fosterchen 9136@/talks/discussions One thing that I believe gets looked over but is an integral part of a lens is the lens cap.

For those like me who are using lenses that came with screw on caps or caps that are less than desired, broken, or missing, it's off to the market to look for replacement caps that can be easily taken off and put back on quickly. With this it is either a cheap generic, an original, or something from another brand (new or old) that fits and does the job. I always choose the last option.

I for one have an interest in using old vintage lens caps, first because they are made better and look nicer than the newer ones. Not to say that some new caps made specifically for that new lens isn't great either (example, the Olympus 12-40mm lens cap).

My favorite cap design at that I keep going to are old Nikon caps with the side pinch. I try to buy and use these as I find them and they are great.

Anyone with this interest and have nice caps to show?

Is the Olympus 12-40 any good? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9133/is-the-olympus-12-40-any-good Wed, 18 Dec 2013 09:50:29 +0000 acuriousman 9133@/talks/discussions I've been reading a lot of reviews about it, but there's just one problem.

None of the reviews used a GH2/GH3 with the lens. They're all using Olympus cams with it.

My concern is that the distortion will be AWFUL with a GH2/GH3 because it doesn't have built in correction like the latest Olympus cams do.

Can anybody confirm or prove this? How does the lens fare with the GH2/GH3?
