When i render the video, if I choose WMV the jerk is attenuated, but if I choose the H.264 with the same settings the video jerks even more. (I use Premiere pro cs4).
I also try to shoot 25p with 25 shutter speed, but it´s not really better.
I look around many blogs, but no one is approaching thys problem of the digital movies.
Anyone has experience with this problem?
Thanks.

When I bought the body of GH1, it came with this REALLY-REALLY annoying software called "PhotoFunStudio". It occupies 364mb on my computer (which doesn't have much breathing space) and frankly, I still don't understand what is it for??? Is there any particular purpose why I might need it, like "correct" file transfer or the "correct" deletion of video and photo files??? Do I need it at all??? Or shall I just uninstall it?

I noticed that when i shoot in AVCHD, my .MTS files are not time-coded. Do I need "PhotoFunStudio" to time-code them?

Here is my workflow. If you see any mistakes or have any suggestions, please tell me.
Sometimes I use my GH13 for taking photos, but primarily for making movies. I use GH13 with Blackout-Powell patch, a 5 year old Dell Latitude D820 laptop with 80GB hard-drive and 3.25GB of RAM, 3TB external HDD, Win XP SP3, Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. At the end of the day, I take out the SD card and put it into a USB-card-reader and put it into my laptop. Then I navigate to PRIVATE/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM , select all .MTS files and move them to my external HDD for editing later in Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. Then, I safely remove the SD card, put it back into GH13 and delete all files (sometimes I format the whole card). When I edit with Premiere Pro CS4, I just drag-n-drop the .MTS files (without timecoding) from my external HDD into the bin and edit away.

Any ideas, suggestions, reflections, would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks!]]>

From Wes and Harry:

October 28, 2011

If you missed our mail last month you should check it out as it got a lot of people talking. Today we have a follow-up.

Our web site has relaunched* and while the overall look of the site is similar there is a dramatic difference in how we are distributing our plug-ins.

Starting today Pro Import AE, Pro Import FCP and Pro Export FCP (both versions, for FCP7 and FCPX) are available at no charge. You read this right. Free.

We are unable to provide support at the same level as we have over the years, but we didn't want these plug-ins to go away while they remain useful. So if you can make use of these plug-ins in your projects, enjoy!

Thank you to all of our users, working with you for the last 10 1/2 years was a truly wonderful experience.

all of my footage is shot in 24p, whether its regular 24p, or has the 80/160/200% adjustment.

What would be the best settings to use for transfer the footage to not suffer a quality loss?

I am currently using driftwood's beautiful buffers 3gop 132mb.

I know I can use 5dtorgb for transcode but the file sizes are huge! Let me know what you all think]]>

QuickTime Plug-in component

The AVCCAM Importer QuickTime plug-in component is to enable direct editing of AVCHD ".mts" file (*1) without conversion.
AVCHD clips recorded on a Panasonic AVCCAM lineup product can be handled directly in QuickTime Player and Final Cut Pro.

NOTE:
*1: AVCHD clips recorded on equipment other than AVCCAM products will not be handled properly. Use the Inspector function in QuickTime Player to view the clip property, which includes the equipment used to record.

* Momentary picture and audio disturbance may occasionally happen in the connection point of spanned files (a clip separated into separate 4GB files.)

* Additional rendering may be required when add title insert and edit more than two streams.

* At rare intervals, following symptom may occasionally happen: (A) MTS file's icon may not be displayed properly on Mac finder, (B) Clip duration may not be displayed on the QuickTime player and an Inspector window.

[Minimum System Requirements]

GH2 AVCHD transcoded with 5DtoRGB vs AVCHD 8 bit 4:2:0 (Chroma sampling+smoothing) https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/807/gh2-avchd-transcoded-with-5dtorgb-vs-avchd-8-bit-420-chroma-sampling-smoothing Tue, 30 Aug 2011 10:11:47 +0000 stefanos 807@/talks/discussions http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/530/5dtorgb-for-gh2-advantages-vs-disadvantages#Item_29 that with my adobe workflow and Color Finesse 3, I have had no need or advantages using 5dtorgb. I was wrong. To be honest, I really wasn't expecting any improvement, but 5DtoRGB did a spectacular job at upsampling 4:2:0 and it's chroma smoothing was excellent.

The scene's background was lit with a blue tint and the skintones in the foreground were lit warmly so as to create a complementary color contrast. Now when I brought the footage into AE, I noticed these very harsh edges around the skintones with false color etc. at first I thought it was digital sharpening but at close inspection, I realised it was the 4:2:0 limitation. It looked awful and I could not perform any sharpening as it got a lot worse. Then I thought I'd try 5dtoRGB and it proved it's worth.

NOTE 1: this improvement that 5dtoRGB brings will be augmented with further micro-contrast enhancements like sharpening etc. Try sharpening the avchd file=ugly mess. try sharpening transcoded file= normal.
NOTE 2: Ofcourse, there are space+time disadvantages.
NOTE 3: this scenario with the blue lit background is quite extreme as it's the perfect receipe
for chroma down-sampled footafe disaster, so it doesn't mean I will be transcoding all of my footage ofcourse.

settings and tech stuff: lit with 2 312 LED lights (1 312 Bi-color at 3200K with diffusion in fridge:) and 1 312 5600K with blue gel), nostalgic -2,0,-2,0. ISO 200, nikkor 50mm 1.2 Ai-s @F2.8, drifwood's 100Mb 3 GOP settings, transcend 16gb class 10, graded in Color Finesse 3, transcoded in uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2 (overkill, 8bit and DNxHD should work fine)

so here goes:

pic 1: 1st detail transcoded (look at improvements) - compare with pic 3
pic 2:2nd detail -transcoded-day and night difference! -compare with pic 4
pic 3:1st detail untranscoded (look at false color and chroma down-sampling artifacts)
pic 4: 2nd detail example- untranscoded ( look at awful false artifacts on skin edge!!!!)
pic 5: untranscoded graded. compare with pic 7
pic 6: transcoded ungraded for reference.
pic 7 :transcoded graded (there is small difference in CC between pic 5+7 cause I changed a few things-this does not affect the edges though)

pixel peepers enjoy!!!

GH17 and FCP7 import Questions https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/462/gh17-and-fcp7-import-questions Fri, 22 Jul 2011 13:29:25 +0000 jules 462@/talks/discussions
Am importing footage into FCP7 from my hacked GH17. Shooting with 100mbps patch, AVCHD 1080p24. When i click on clips in my timeline frame size is 1920 by 1080, 23.98fps, and they fairly consistently have a Data Rate of 13MB/s. However, the timeline setting aspect ratio is always 1080i, and the clips all have a Field Dominance of 'Upper'. This means the footage is interlaced?

Exported .mov of final sequence analyzed with MediaInfo shows the movie has a Bit Rate of 105mbps (variable), 1888 by 1062 aspect, 23.976 fps, and that the Scan type is 'interlaced'.

So.. my questions are...

1) How does the 13.5MB/s data rate in fcp relate to the 105mbps in final .mov? are MB/s and mbps the same units?? is the hack producing high bitrates for me? I appreciate it is variable and depends on footage.. but should be more than 13.5 given my footage? i have pre-hack (GH1) footage that MediaInfo shows as 85mbps in final movie, so am presuming that the 105mbps doesn't mean i am achieving the hack levels.

2) What am i doing wrong at import? Why is my 1080p24 footage seen by FCP as interlaced and exported as such? even though i shoot in progressive, do i need to deinterlace at export form FCP?

Again.. sorry if questions are stupid or not appropriate. am just a completely confused newbie!!

Thanks!
