I have been scouring the site for relevant information, but am gathering it in drips and draps, so I thought I might as well start a new topic.

I am thinking of getting an external recorder for my GH2 (i know, I am late to the game), but have read that some recorders don't work with GH2. But first, allow me to establish some background info I know (but stand corrected). GH2's output wasn't clean till Panasonic upgraded firmware to v1.1. 25p is now clean, and Atoms Ninja website has published instructions on how to integrate GH2 into the recording workflow. Testers have reported clean footage, but some testers claim that red channel is still jaggy (the extent of which i have not seen). Then I read that Black Magic Hyperdeck does not recognise GH2 output as true HDMI; some testers have reported unusable footage(?). In any case, whether 25p or not, the recorded output has been reported to be "interlaced" on the Ninja.

Now I have also read that GH2 with hacked firmware v1.1 yields aberrations, such as colour shifts, inaccurate gamma, ghosting(?) when recording onto the Ninja. Could someone pl verify this? Does hacked firmware not work?
I am on the brink of buying a Ninja, but thought I should look before I leap. Appreciate all yr kind views.
Cheers

I currently use a G6 and a hacked GH1 for my projects, they are absolutely enough for my need, but I want try this cam for a weekend only, just to test how it performs in the lighting conditions I usually shoot.

The problem is: I use a cheap i3 4GB ram to edit my avchd G6 footage with Edius, is it ridiculous to use Film-convert on ProRes BMPCC Film mode files with my hardware? I've heard that ProRes files can be used even on modest pc...

40" Monitor/HDTV for Editing? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10453/40-monitorhdtv-for-editing Sun, 25 May 2014 15:00:10 +0000 ragnar 10453@/talks/discussions I need some advice.
Here's the quick backstory:

I've been using two 23" Hanspree monitors for all of my Photoshop, AE, and Premiere editing for the last 6 years of so. One of the Hanspree monitors just died the other day and my first thought was to just replace it. Now I'm thinking that perhaps a 40" monitor/hdtv would be a possible choice. A 40" monitor would be about 729 inches square while my old setup of two 23" monitors was 698 inches square. Getting a real honest to god 40" monitor seems too expensive but I did find a Samsung H40B HDTV that looked good. One review said it has 4:4:4 sub sampling (whatever that is) which makes text very sharp and clear, an important factor for me and editing. Anyway, if anyone is editing on something like this I'd appreciate any comments.

Any solution for this? Any ideas?

I was wondering on what do you think guys about using a 2560x1440 monitor to view down-scaled 4K content or video edit ? I know it is not 4K, but would the footage look better on this monitor rather than a normal FHD ? The reason for my question is that I want to experiment with 4K once I get my hands on a Panasonic GH4 but the problem as it appears at the moment of writing this message (29/4/2014) that 4K monitors are too expensive and TN only.

AMD had big issues with their tablet solution lately.

While new APUs are much better they can be not better enough, especially compared to new upcoming Intel Atom chips that will use 14nm.

BMD Ultrastudio mini recorder(thunderbolt) + GH3 + Wirecast for streaming https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8577/bmd-ultrastudio-mini-recorderthunderbolt-gh3-wirecast-for-streaming Mon, 28 Oct 2013 01:13:41 +0000 andrevanberlo 8577@/talks/discussions Hey everyone,

To do some live streaming I’ve looked at many solutions and this one seems (at this point) the most ideal for my multi camera setup : hook up 3 gh3’s to 3 Ultrastudio mini recorders with thunderbolt and use wirecast to do the streaming and encoding on the mac pro/hackintosh.

I’ve seen however some conflicting messages on forums where it seems that the GH3 signal will not pass through the mini recorder, so does any one have experience with this? Can anyone confirm the mini recorder works with the GH3 and wirecast?

I believe the GH3 has 4:2:0 out and the codecs supported by the mini recorder are:   AVC-Intra, AVCHD, Canon XF MPEG2, Digital SLR, DV-NTSC, DV-PAL, DVCPRO50, DVCPROHD, DPX, HDV, XDCAM EX, XDCAM HD, XDCAM HD422, Apple ProRes 4444, Apple ProRes 422 (HQ), Apple ProRes 422, Apple ProRes (LT), Apple ProRes 422 (Proxy), Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2, Uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2.

So perhaps the GH3 might not work due to different colorspace?

Here a post where you see a setup using to minirecorders thunderbolt + usb camera to stream live with wirecast: htttp://forum.telestream.net/forum/messageview.aspx?catid=45&threadid=13444 The guy doesn't use a dslr but dedicated camera but you can use the mini recorders with wirecast, only question is, will it work with the GH3?!

Hope one of you can shed some light on this matter

Cool audio interface - Tascam UH-7000 https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10079/cool-audio-interface-tascam-uh-7000- Sun, 06 Apr 2014 06:12:01 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 10079@/talks/discussions Very good if you need headphone amp, good DAC/ADC and also preamp.

image

The UH-7000 is a pro-level microphone preamp and audio interface designed with a strong focus on low noise and high audio quality. Not only can this unit be used as a 4-in/4-out audio interface in a DAW production environment, but as a standalone microphone preamp and A/D / D/A converter. The built-in HDIA (High Definition Instrumentation Architecture) microphone preamps are newly designed and perform at −128 dBu equivalent input noise, a signal-to-noise ratio of 117 dB and distortion of 0.0009 % or less.

The grand nature of the UH-7000’s sound is partially due to the careful attention spent on selecting parts. In addition to Burr-Brown converters and metal thin-film resistors, installed is a powerful TCXO clock generator with a precision of ±1 ppm.

The unit’s half-rack size makes it easy to install at a studio console or work desk. The thick aluminum panels used on the front and sides of the full-metal body help increase stability. Highly important but easily forgotten about are the smooth-tension aluminum input level knobs for precise level adjustments.

The UH-7000 microphone preamp and audio interface enables composers, musicians and recording engineers to produce music in their private quarters at a level generally reached only in professional studios.

  • Can be used as a stand-alone high-end AD converter for monitoring or recording to stand-alone recorders
  • High-performance mic preamp newly designed for this model reduces influence of impedance mismatch with high accuracy resulting in most accurate audio reproduction at the input stage
  • Superb audio quality with samling rates up to 192 kHz at 24-bit resolution
  • Ultra-high dynamic range of 123 dB (A/D) and 128 dB (D/A)
  • Professional-grade PCM4220 A/D and D/A converters from Texas Instruments
  • Selected components like metal film resistors and film capacitors for outstanding sound quality with noise and distortion minimized to a minimum
  • High-precision clock synchronization with sample-accuracy at both recording and playback
  • On-board DSP mixer and effects like EQ, compressor, noise suppressor, de-esser, exciter and reverb (effects up to 96 kHz only)
  • Two large TRIM knobs for precise level adjustment
  • XLR and TRS balanced analogue inputs
  • Switchable 48-V phantom power on XLR inputs
  • XLR balanced line outputs
  • Line output level can optionally be adjusted with the headphones level control
  • Output selector allows a source to be output via the unit's mixer or via a computer connected by USB
  • Powerful headphones output with dedicated level control
  • AES/EBU digital I/O
  • Low-latency monitoring
  • Easy-to-read 20-dot LED level meter

I am using a Blackmagic Decklink Duo card to output to multiple displays for live events and everything is great. I capture external sources like Sony X3 via HDSDI and can connect a single DVI source through the Blackmagic DVI extender. I want to use the Extron MGP 464 DI switcher to add more sources through the DVI extender, as the Extron has a DVI output. The Extron is a great switcher/scaler and works great on its own, but I have been unable to make it work through the DVI extender. If I connect any other source to the DVI converter, it will work perfectly, as long as I feed it one of the resolutions and refresh rates the Decklink Duo supports (720p 50/60 1080p 24/25/50/60 or just PAL or NTSC). I have tried laptops, PS3, DVD players etc, all are fine. Extron also outputs almost any resolutions you can imagine through its DVI main output and works perfectly with plasmas, monitors, projectors etc... Why can I not get them to talk to eachother? I have tried all resolutions and refresh rates, many different DVI cables and still no luck. I would be very, very grateful if anyone has any further ideas as to what else I could try. Here are the links for the equipment mentioned; Extron MGP 464 DI: http://www.extron.com/product/product.aspx?id=mgp464&s=5 Blackmagic DVI extender: http://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/dviextender Thanks in advance everyone!

Star quad cables, any way to identify them without opening them? https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9752/star-quad-cables-any-way-to-identify-them-without-opening-them Sat, 01 Mar 2014 14:31:04 +0000 arum 9752@/talks/discussions I ended up reading Jay Rose's book about sound capture. It was good, but left me wondering about star quad cables. Mr. Rose makes a point of these cables being better and just marginally more expensive than other cables, therefore worth the little extra money.

I can find cables on the internet that are explicitly marked as star quad , but when I went to my local shop and asked about them, the guys there did not seem to know what I was talking about and it was suggested that maybe all microphone cables with xlr connectors were star quad and people just did not talk about it. They offered a fender microphone cable that will definitely work, but -blame Mr. Rose- I'd like to get a quad star cable.

I am able to read the wikipedia page about balanced line and found this to read too http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/nov09/articles/qa1109_4.htm. That second link makes me think that probably most cables with XLR connectors out there are not star quad cables.

I was wondering if there's any way to tell if you are dealing with a quad star or just a twisted pair cable without opening the connector. Also, if anyone has a trustworthy source and would like to share, feel free to PM me.

2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card (epic) failure https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9739/2011-macbook-pro-and-discrete-graphics-card-epic-failure Fri, 28 Feb 2014 17:42:39 +0000 luxis 9739@/talks/discussions Wondering if anybody here has been through the 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card failure which is becoming more and more common and yet Apple inc are ignoring the issue. I was finishing a multicam project in Premiere CS6 and Premiere kept giving me errors and shutting down. Eventually the mac froze while in full screen preview in premier and I had to do a hard reset. after this the "saga" has begun...I could not even log in to the os. After checking HD, Putting back original ram,etc,etc...Everything else is fine but found out that is the Radeon that is the issue(not that card is bad but its the apple design that is plain wrong or quality control has been sedated before they release this model in a rush). After manually removing the radeon kexts I am back on line using just the motherboard intel HD3000 512mb. This emergency recovery effort came with a price of severe blue tint and lower resolution altogether plus the screen is at full intensity and it is not possible to adjust any of this, at least in the usual GUI way. Slowness is also an somehow issue(not severe as others report after the kexts fix)since I have 16gb of ram and strangely enough I can finish my project in premier without hiccups now!?! Since the computer runs on the default Intel HD 3000 video card why do I still have issues video/monitor. 512mb should be plenty to run things at a decent level meaning normal color profile etc. Not like before but c'mon the bare minimum should be covered! Any solutions/suggestions/ideas(like custom kexts, command lines, etc.) to resolve the issue will be greatly appreciated!

Here are some links to the issue(s):

AppleInsider:

"The problem, as highlighted by multiple threads on Apple’s Support Communities forum, first presents itself as a graphical glitch — or, in more serious cases, complete system lockup — when an affected MacBook Pro switches from the integrated Intel graphics chip to the discrete AMD graphics processing unit, or GPU. Reports of the issue first cropped up in February, but have become more frequent over the past month."

My budget is low, no more than $ 400 and as much as $ 500.

Lightroom is a dragon that literally eats my computer, when I do any operation as simple as it is, I can not do anything else or is very slow, for example if I have an audio or video is choppy. When I export a photo from LR lasts 1-2 minutes, if I want to export to more than 3 times the memory will not let me. As a second option I like to operate Premiere or Vegas editing videos GH2, although this is much to ask.

Im know that budget I cant find a fast computer, but at least I did not delay much.

This chart is my current laptop. The processor is obsolete, but 4GB of RAM is acceptable but far from ideal today.

PS: My experience with HP is not good, do not think it repeat with this brand.

Thanks!

I'm a musical educator online and this will be my first time going to a live switched 3 camera setup.

Should have my first wave of gear arriving in the next few days - looking forward to getting it all setup.

I just spoke with tech support at BMD and they confirmed that the GH2s and GH3 should work together even if the GH3 is at 59.94fps (is it?) and the GH2s are 60fps - as long as one is running the latest software on the ATEM (3.4 I think).

I understand that the GH2s don't send audio via hdmi but I'm hopeful that the GH3 will as I've read a spec sheet that confirmed this (anyone know for sure?).

Cameras will be very close together. I'll be teaching guitar so I'm looking for a wide shot and a left hand closeup and right hand closeup. Hoping the Ex Tele mode works as well as reported - would save me a bundle not purchasing more lenses.

Went with the GH2/3s for their bang/buck ratio & clean hdmi. Also, I'm dslr shooter otherwise (Canon 5Diii/60d) and like the format with all it's endearing quirks ;)

Some of my work can be seen on www.tekoa.tv

Also hoping that Metabones will release their Speedbooster for M43 quickly!

A penny for your thoughts?

They are cheaper than RK3188 based tablets mostly, and significantly faster (due to clocks and much better GPU). It is about 30k in Antutu compared to 20k for Rockchip.

And this is important as they use same Retina screens like iPads.

It can be alternative for SDI in prosumer cameras. Cat 5e cable is, of course, less reliable than coaxial one, but implementation can be cheaper and very long length can be used by studios.

NVidia hardware H.264 encoder https://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4228/nvidia-hardware-h.264-encoder Mon, 13 Aug 2012 09:06:20 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 4228@/talks/discussions As you may know, GTX 680 and GTX 670 cards are based on same chip (later has one block turned off).

And it has harware H.264 encoder. No, not CUDA based.

All Kepler GPUs also incorporate a new hardware-based H.264 video encoder, NVENC. Prior to the introduction of Kepler, video encoding on previous GeForce products was handled by encode software running on the GPU’s array of CUDA Cores. While the CUDA Cores were able to deliver tremendous performance speedups compared to CPU-based encoding, one downside of using these high-speed processor cores to process video encoding was increased power consumption. By using specialized circuitry for H.264 encoding, the NVENC hardware encoder in Kepler is almost four times faster than our previous CUDA-based encoder while consuming much less power.

It is important to note that an application can choose to encode using both NVENC hardware and NVIDIA’s legacy CUDA encoder in parallel, without negatively affecting each other. However, some video pre-processing algorithms may require CUDA, and this will result in reduced performance from the CUDA encoder since the available CUDA Cores will be shared by the encoder and pre-processor. NVENC provides the following:

  • Can encode full HD resolution (1080p) videos up to 8x faster than real-time. For example, in high performance mode, encoding of a 16 minute long 1080p, 30 fps video will take approximately 2 minutes.
  • Support for H.264 Base, Main, and High Profile Level 4.1 (same as Blu-ray standard)
  • Supports MVC (Multiview Video Coding) for stereoscopic video—an extension of H.264 which is used for Blu-ray 3D.
  • Up to 4096x4096 encode

It could be very interesting to see native support in main NLE for this feature.
