I'm guessing it was probably done in more than one take, but what I really love is the use of focus pulls, particularly where several "planes" are involved, and also the shots of the performers at the start of the video. It captures perfectly what goes through your mind as a performer before starting a piece.

This is a link to the facebook page - I can't find out where the original source video is so you'll have to visit the page to see this. Well worth it, though, for anyone considering doing video of performance, just for some ideas.

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=232639466870299

While you can do an imaginative video using all sorts of locations and parallel stories, I think it's a challenge to do an interesting video of performers which just concentrates on them throughout. I really like what they've done here and would be interested in seeing any other examples of video which is confined to the one location.

So long, but thanks for the fish... (eye) - A Protest Video. http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5603/so-long-but-thanks-for-the-fish...-eye-a-protest-video. Fri, 28 Dec 2012 15:35:11 +0000 duartix 5603@/talks/discussions @Vitaliy_Kiselev: sorry if this is the wrong place, but I feel it covers so many topics (GH2, FlowMotion2, Samyang7.5mm, capture, defishing, AE workflow, Premiere workflow) that I wouldn't know where else to put it. Let me know if you want it moved.

The short story: 31-OCT, the day the Portuguese Budget for 2013 was approved. People gathered in front of the Parliament to say we're being governed by thieves. Not very original I know, but it's a great place to shoot video and take pictures (well at last until it degenerates into mayhem which is rare around this parts but not unheard of until very recently). This is how I worked it.

1) The extremely simple setup:

GH2, screen folded back as a monitor, Transcend 32GB class 10, Samyang 7.5mm fisheye (my favorite video lens), set and forget to hyperfocal, ISO 400 I believe, SS=1/25s. Flowmotion 2 was used as I never know before hand how much video I'm going to capture or how many photos I'll be shooting, so I need something that is very good quality but doesn't make me have to change cards when something very important is happening. If the card is pre-formatted (the extended, not the quick format) it has never failed me to span.

2) The capture:

This is all about getting there up front and trying not to shake the camera. The police until very recently (and only after a 1h stone shower) has been instructed not to charge, so it's an easy job, you just dodge the TV reporters and other amateurs like me. So, here's my first mistake: the aperture is fine, this lens is sharp as an axe, but should have upped the ISO and set a faster SS because in these situations you are always bound to get bumped and it shows in wobbles after software stabilization.

3) Defishing the Samyang:

Load the MTS into AE. Export as image sequence. Use a batch (http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/comment/69869#Comment_69869) to defish the images and import the output again to AE now as image sequence. The defishing was done using the Panini projection. It's loads more natural on people than Rectilinear, it preserves a lot more corner resolution and still manages to keep a few lines straight. This was the first export and not reasonably quick because the synthesis part takes it's toll: ~2-3fps.

4) Stabilizing:

Throw AE's Warp Stabilizer on the footage. Set the "Smoothness" to 15-25% (it will require much less cropping later) set borders to "Stabilize, Synthesize Edges" (again a lot less cropping) but drop the "Synthesis Input Range" to 0,2s otherwise you'll bog AE. In this kind of footage there is usually little point in using a higher value. Skim the footage looking for black borders and try to resize and reframe it so that they don't become evident. Note: defishing after stabilizing should make more sense as you would have more image to work with (defishing crops it) but from a few rough tries, the AE stabilization isn't clearly as effective when working on fisheye footage. This was the second export and a very long one: below 1fps.

5) CC & Denoising:

Used some of ColorGHear's gears, notably GHrain killer to kill a bit of noise and blockiness, but the footage was already very clean from the start and little color correction was used, just a little bit of levels adjusment. This was the third export and I believe it was even longer than the third due to the noise reduction filters: below 0.5fps.

6) The "so long" part: video effects, tracking and subtitling:

Translations were pretty quick, the hard and long part (at least until I found out how to smooth it) was tracking. It was fastidious to track people's features, takes a long time and needs constant review and adjustment. In the end I found out a few tricks (like increasing the tracking area) and smoothing the tracking points. This eased the job a lot and gave much better results. In the end I had to do it sometimes up to 3x until I was satisfied with it. In the process I had to learn a lot about tracking, smoothing, 3D objects, texting, transitions and light sources. This was the forth, the quickest and last export, probably around 10fps.

7) Audio mixing.

This was the part I was more ignorant about, but turned out to be pretty simple. Even though it's pretty rough, the footage is little demanding with so much crowd noise. It was as simple as importing the last video export from AE into Premiere, importing the original sound, importing also "Le Tigre - Dike March 2001" cutting and pasting a few pieces of this track and adjusting the volume here and there to serve the original events while leaving the words of the protesters audible when needed and off I was to the final export.

The resulting video can be found here:

Here are a few pictures of the event.

Anything more you may want to know about any part of the process I'll be glad to detail it.

Unfortunately, waveforms are missing in the cam. How about FCPX? Know that Blackmagic has a solution but at 400 euro rather expensive and seems to be SDI. I guess external monitors with waveform are going to be expensive too.

SSD Workflow in Video Editing http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5434/ssd-workflow-in-video-editing Mon, 10 Dec 2012 06:05:19 +0000 Sph1nxster 5434@/talks/discussions First of all, apologize if this topic has been covered allready, the search function for the site does not work on my work computer for some reason.

I am looking for some help as to whether or not my current approach is in fact counter-productive or not.

For a while now since upgrading to a new work station, I have been using my SSD in the following way to edit:-

  • Windows 7 on SSD
  • Corel Videostudio X5 on SSD
  • Import Clips from SD card onto SSD ready for editing
  • Edit clips and render (export) to SSD
  • Once project is complete, move to 3 TB HDD for backup and storage

I have been told a few times now that I should not be using the SSD for either the storage of raw video files or using for exporting to either.

What are the reasons for this and could my workflow be improved?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I got a 16GB Patriot Supersonic Boost XT USB 3.0 Flash Drive and dump all the AIC and ProRes files on there instead on the Hard drive.

I hit a bottle neck of around 100Mbps while playing in QT and of course any kind of editing just bogged down.

But after some tweaks I can smoothly play a 1080 60p AIC/ProRes file at 200Mbps, the file is 1.16GB and 50 seconds in length.

Here is the video that I entered.

This isn't a contest that will make me famous or anything like that. It is just for a bag O swag(AKA gear). However, it is a great way to show people what climbing is all about. If you are like me then your kids are probably climbing all over your house and furniture. Try taking them to your local climbing gym where they will have a lot of fun and where it is much safer for them to do this natural activity.

I was deathly afraid of heights my entire life because my parents were always so afraid I would fall off something. I never even climbed trees when I was a kid because I had such an intense fear of heights. Then when my son was 5 years old he looked up at a 40 foot wall and said "Dad, that is what I want to do". Little did I know that what he really meant was "Dad that is what I want to do the rest of my life".

For someone that is that terrified of heights the thought of climbing a 40 foot wall is almost unbearable. However, I realized that I must overcome that fear in order to teach my son not to fear it. I overcame my intense fear of heights so that I could enjoy the sport my son loves so dearly and I have been climbing right there with him ever since. Needless to say my son definitely lacks a fear of heights.

Here is another video showing what the youth climbing competitions in the US are like. If you have any questions about where the closest place to climb is for you just ask and I will try to help you out.

This was shot entirely with a hacked GH2. I used the No adverse affects settings because I just can't have any write errors at all with these live events that you only get one take for.

Come On... If you use Tape, You can't find any Better for Less!

I purchased 600 of these tapes for a film project a few years ago, and have 33 of them left.

They are brand new (have been stored in a climate controlled location since purchased) and still in their protective wrappers... They Were Never Opened!

They come in 5 packs and the boxes they come in are unopened as well, except for the 1 box out of 7 that only has 3 (unopened) tapes out of the 5.

These tapes are durable and have never let me down. Before I use to use a lower quality tape and I had all kinds of problems, like drop outs in the middle of a good take :-(

But these Sony tapes gave me the confidence to trust my equipment, and it saved me a lot of stress AND money.

I no longer have any tape based equipment so they are up for bid.

BTW The MSRP on these is something like $23.99 Each, and they are selling at retail for around $11.99 - $16.99 Each (you can probably find them for $8.00 each, or maybe less, if you look hard enough but they are hard to find).

I'm selling them for $128 or Best Offer.

I just finished shooting and this is a rough cut of the work I've been doing on and off at the company I work for. I am actually their network/sys admin but I do some marking stuff on the side. It's shot with a hacked Lumix GH2 and edited in premier/ae cs6. We used to have an outside company do our video but do to the affordability of good video cameras we are experimenting just doing it in house.

I am working with limited equipment and time so there are some less than perfect (shaky) shots. If you have any ideas on affordable gear or just shooting/editing advice that would improve things let me know!

Oh and yes I do know that Vimeo has a commercial (Pro) subscription for commercial projects. I am in the process of getting the purchase approved. Mainly just using it as a test bed right now.

Thanks, Clark

Any tips for shooting my first music video? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4191/any-tips-for-shooting-my-first-music-video Thu, 09 Aug 2012 18:49:56 +0000 jimtreats 4191@/talks/discussions Hi folks,

I've got a local band interested in shooting a music video or two with me after I showed them some footage I got of a small gig of there's shot handheld live with a single camera.

I need to flesh it out with them some more, just exactly what sort of things they're looking for but thought it'd be a nice thing to ask if anyone here had any tips about attempting my first one?

I think we'll be shooting multiple takes with the band miming over the top of a sync track which will be used for the actual audio in the final video. I guess I'm wondering first about the best way to tackle the syncing issue. I'll record with the camera the sound in the room so should be able to here this sync track and sync all the clips to the actual music properly before I start editing... Wondering the best way to go about that tho, obviously can't rely on a clapperboard as such, and when the artists start miming to the track I'll likely hear they're instruments over the sync track so I wonder if having a small bit of un-mimed to music at the front of every take may be the best idea for having something clear to sync with.

I'll try to edit with FCPX, I guess it's multicam work of sorts, not sure if that update dropped.

Who knows how it'll go, I look forward to trying, and would greatly appreciate any suggestions from anyone else on here who's more experienced in these matters.

Cheers

Jim

Creative video mode compared to "A S M P" modes question http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4126/creative-video-mode-compared-to-a-s-m-p-modes-question Thu, 02 Aug 2012 05:25:45 +0000 AKED 4126@/talks/discussions Hi,

I have a question. For my professional videos with my GH2, so with controlled lightning etc, I of course use the creative video mode and so did I also during my private videos. At one time I needed to take a picture during a video take and found out, that I can not do this in creative video mode. But in A S M P and many other modes, when I film in these modes. Now the chosen video format, SHG, SH (1080i, 720p,) or so stays the same in the other modes. What is different is, that in these modes, Auto ISO jumps in which can mot be overruled.

When I film outside with good light I do not care. Other things like aperture, shutter speed etc ca be set manually in the normal modes ad well.

So my question to the GH2 experts: What are the other differences/advantages From creative video modes to A S M P Modes

Advantage creative video mode: 1. control of the ISO 2. ?

Advantage A S M P modes: 1. pictures can be taken during video filming 2. ?

Thanks already, any answer will be appreciated.

@ Vitaliy, if you ind a thread, where this question fits please shift it there or let me know and I post the question there again.

I'd ideally like something that:

  • Is compatible with both Mac and PC
  • Can be used with CS5.5, CS6, (compatibility with Avid and FCP are bonus
  • can work with davinci resolve
  • Not more than $600 ($900 absolute highest if it's really worth the extra $)

I know of the Matrox MXO mini, but I don't have any experience with it or any other box.

Also, is there any box solution that will work on an old 2007 Imac that lacks both a PCI slot and a thunderbolt?
