"Young Man"- A new short shot on the GH2 http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7982/young-man-a-new-short-shot-on-the-gh2 Mon, 02 Sep 2013 08:44:51 +0000 Philldaagony 7982@/talks/discussions It's been far too long since I've shared something here on Personal View (I think "The Date" was the last video I posted.). Anyway, here is "Young Man" a narrative music video/short film we shot at the beginning of August.

Password: 10111987

Details:

We shot this using two GH2s and varied between the Voigt 25mm, a Nikkor 50mm f1.4, and the stock panny 14-42mm kit lens (wide interiors). The patches we used were older versions of the Nebula pactch (GOP6 I believe Cluster X series 1) and the series one version of Moon (maybe even T5), not quite sure.

Anyway, thought I'd share and just like to say thank you to this wonderful community, even if I've only been lurking lately (corporate life has a way of doing that, but that should be changing soon).

This muddy "old" video is a mix of:

• A very personal/biographic collection of stills taken in Czech Republic, Spain and Portugal between 2006 and 2007

• Plus a tweaked version of Gertrude Stein's Family Living can go on existing a text extracted from her The Making of Americans book together with a shakuhachi flute (unfortunately can't remember neither song or performer's name) as SOUNDTRACK

• And still my own poem Algalia all mixed up directly in Quicktime

GF3 Live HDMI output? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7683/gf3-live-hdmi-output Sun, 04 Aug 2013 05:28:55 +0000 chrisz78 7683@/talks/discussions I have a GF3 which I am using occasionally for transfer of old 8mm and 9.5mm films, rigged together with a projector through a "custom-tinkered" combination of lenses to project the tiny film frame on the GF3 sensor. I find the "pseudo-live" video output very useful because it helps focusing and adjusting the image a lot if you can watch on a full-size monitor. But as you know, the A/V output is switched off the moment I turn video recording on, and on the small GF3 monitor I often won't notice when the film slips slightly out-of-focus due to mechanical problems, or a hair or other bit of debris gets stuck in the picture area during projection. Now I don't have HDMI input facility at hand, so could someone with a HDMI monitor and a GF3 please check if the video output via HDMI stays on during recording? I've googled and used the search function here, but couldn't find anything definitive enough to make me buy a HDMI converter or new monitor for the purpose. If "live HDMI out" depends on the firmware version or on certain hacks being installed, I'd appreciate clear instructions as to what I need. I have little spare time to re-invent the wheel and try out everything available in the hope that something will work.... Thank you!

New HID lighting for video... could it be the best cost effective lighting solution http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7633/new-hid-lighting-for-video...-could-it-be-the-best-cost-effective-lighting-solution Tue, 30 Jul 2013 07:14:41 +0000 danyyyel 7633@/talks/discussions I saw this post on dvxuser about using HID bulb and ballast to do video lighting.

www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?311263-400w-Metal-Halide-6500k-anyone-tried-it

He talks about this $ 35 bulb http://www.hidhut.com/400w-metal-halide-lamp-6500-kelvin-p-418.html and $ 100 ballast. The bulb is 400 watt 6500 k and 90 cri (to be verified). If this is the case for $ 150 dollars you would get a reflector bulb/ballast socket system that would yield about the power of a 1500/2000 watt tungsten light in little overcast cloudy kelvin (6500k) that can be gelled easily with little power loss to 5600. Hard light that can be shaped much more than any soft light.

EXQUISITE CORPSE - a collaborative video proposal http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6989/exquisite-corpse-a-collaborative-video-proposal Sat, 18 May 2013 14:00:55 +0000 maxr 6989@/talks/discussions

Hey guys, allow me to take you away from latest tech news and developments for a "game" proposal. Do you know about the surrealist's cadavre exquis… well, case you don't

Exquisite corpse, also known as exquisite cadaver (from the original French term cadaver exquis) or rotating corpse, is a method by which a collection of words or images is collectively assembled. Each collaborator adds to a composition in sequence, either by following a rule (e.g. "The adjective noun adverb verb the adjective noun") or by being allowed to see the end of what the previous person contributed.

WIKI

I always liked better the allowed to see the end of what the previous person contributed version, so here's what I propose:

Anyone registered in PV can participate, just has to post a reply - so everything's transparent - and send me a private message, for email and download details. Order of participation will be same as registration.

Each participant will have 3 days to make a new shot, we're not recycling footage… is a question of experimentation process and flow ;)
there will be a max of 1 hour over the deadline. After that I'll unmercifully jump to next in list.

I'll take the dealer part, receiving the files and sending to next participant just the last (previous) one.

IF failing deadline or any of the below rules, I'll go on with next in list… nothing personal but pragmatism.

Resulting mess will be under Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs
CC BY-NC-ND creative commons license

All participants will receive a digital copy

RULES

  1. 1 Shot
  2. B&W only
  3. 1920x1080p24
  4. Between 1 and 5 sec
  5. In camera in&out and edit; no post edition, including sound and grading
  6. Any camera capable of above specs (remember B&W, 24p, etc.) allowed

Remember this is just a game so ENJOY!!!
I'll be second participant, only for practical reasons, as from then on I would have seen more than just the last piece.

So, whose the brave soul willing to start?!!!

GF1 hack (manual modes in video) bug http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7283/gf1-hack-manual-modes-in-video-bug Tue, 18 Jun 2013 05:14:47 +0000 bkej 7283@/talks/discussions Hello,

I use my GF1 + firmware hack since more than 6 months, it's great, congratulations :)

I have the following problem :

  • Set "Mode A" for video

  • Shut down the camera

  • Power on the camera

  • The "Mode A" setting for video is forgotten! The only way for having "Mode A" for video again is : go in the menu, set ANOTHER mode , e.g. "Mode P" for video, and THEN go in the menu again and set "Mode A" for video again.

I know somebody else having the same problem, with the same camera.

Who should I contact about this little bug?

Thanks in advance.

It's a mixture of video and time-lapse of the Forth road and rail bridges around Edinburgh in Scotland. Initially I was just using it as a learning exercise about the GH3, but the bridge folks liked it themselves and started using it.

There are some dust bunnies in there, but I have learned not to go beyond F16 these days

I managed to get 510 feet up to the top of the Forth road bridge, but the barriers were moving so much my timelapse photo's were all blurred, so it's only shaky video footage from the top (I will take a proper tripod up next time)

Upcoming: Free EQ and FX Presets for GH2 Internal Mic and Rode VMP (Possibly GH3) http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6091/upcoming-free-eq-and-fx-presets-for-gh2-internal-mic-and-rode-vmp-possibly-gh3 Mon, 11 Feb 2013 16:12:27 +0000 thepalalias 6091@/talks/discussions Some of my recent conversations with GH2 users made me realize that a lot of people could benefit from some decent EQ presets specifically tailored to the GH2 and some of the mics used with it.

I won't make some big marketing push for why mine would be better than anybody else's - in the last decade and a half of working with software FX I've learned there are a lots of ways to make things sound great. I also won't make any money off of this so there would be no point. :) But I do want to make it as easy as possible for people that aren't used to dealing with EQ to get a good sound.

Now here's the part where you come in. The tricky part of making presets is that they have to be widely usable. I'll be making these on a Windows machine (I spend more time in Windows than OS X) so whatever plug-in I make them for will need to work in that environment. I am thinking I would like to use the free ReaPlugs suite from Cockos, but my question is whether people would prefer that I use those or the ones native to Reaper itself?

If I use the ones internal to Reaper, then I seem to remember they may also work on OS X. But if I use the ReaPlugs suite, they will work in any host but Windows only.

Here are the links to each: http://www.reaper.fm/ http://www.reaper.fm/reaplugs/index.php

So, which version would you guys prefer? Feel free to suggest other free plug-ins or other microphones you would like covered. I'm open to doing the same thing for the GH3 if there's sufficient interest.

Panasonic GF2 video output during recording? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5372/panasonic-gf2-video-output-during-recording Tue, 04 Dec 2012 11:01:18 +0000 Igor_van_Airde 5372@/talks/discussions Hello,

I got a Panasonic GF2 and have some trouble with the analog video output. I want to use the output to preview video during recording. I already found that you can enable the live output by pressing Q.MENU for some seconds. This works fine for capturing stilts, but if you start recording a video, the output shows only black as long as you record the video. After stopping recording, you have normal output again.

I think this is just a firmware restriction that can be removed! Any suggestions?

And I really need the analog output all the time, because I want to operate the camera remotecontrolled and get the preview via an analog video transmitter.

It's a basic summary of how the GH2 compresses its data, and why and how this impacts image quality.

This is the FAQ to read if you're trying to read the forums, and finding a lot of technical stuff and acronyms that are going right over your head. It won't make you design hacks as good as Driftwood's or Sanity or Cake, and it won't tell you which hack is the best one to use. But if you read it, you will understand what I-frames and P-frames are, what GOP is, what intraframing and interframing are, and a few other details that'll help you follow some of the discussions here.

I've heard, that GH3 can record in 4K 20 frames per second and memory card capable to store 95 Mb/s. Therefore if we narrow size to 16mm (10.6mm x 6mm) is it possible to record RAW video?

In video mode replace exposure numbers with rotary disc shutter angle: 1/32 = 270° (?) | 1/48 = 180° (add) | 1/50 = 172.8° | 1/60 = 144°; | 1/96 = 90° (add) | 1/120 = 72° (add)

Add Frame Line - The aspect ratio frame  1.85:1 (35mm theatrical), 2.35:1 (Cinemascope)
