Mostly macro shot with my Panasonic GH4 in a Nauticam housing, using the Olympus M.Zuiko ED 12-50mm f3.5-6.3 EZ lens and a Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60mm f/2.8 macro lens. Edited in Vegas Pro.

I published at 1080p so I could crop and zoom the 4k footage and incorporate a bit of Ken Burns effect. Hopefully I didn't overdo it. All feedback is welcome.

Some inexpensive Waterproof Underwater Housing Case for GX7? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13503/some-inexpensive-waterproof-underwater-housing-case-for-gx7 Tue, 04 Aug 2015 10:40:27 +0000 Manu4Vendetta 13503@/talks/discussions It is a mystery that manufacturers such as Neewer and Meikon (for poor man) which are available are gear for GM1, GH4, GF's, Sony A6000, A7 and not for the GX7 being this camera of similar dimensions to A6000 and very popular. Or Im making a bad search. Nauticam is not for me, too expensive.

4k underwater videography http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12828/4k-underwater-videography- Sun, 19 Apr 2015 03:07:48 +0000 karl 12828@/talks/discussions In the last weeks had the first chance to shoot 4k (or more correctly, 3840x2160p24) video underwater, using the new Nauticam NA-LX100 housing with a Panasonic LX100 inside.

If you are interested in the results I could achieve, download this 5 minute sample video I prepared (size: 1.1 GB): https://archive.org/download/na-lx100-sample/na-lx100-sample.mp4

No artificial light, no stands or other accessories were used in its making.

This video was encoded at 32MBit/s in H.264 - somewhat the minimum of what needs to be invested to provide a decent reproduction of the original (100MBit/s) recording. Notice that it won't make sense to upload this sample to "streaming video hosters", as those typically limit the video bandwidth to ridiculously small values, turning "swarms of moving fishes" into mere "displays of mushy compression artefacts".

Please download the complete MP4 file before replaying it locally, it's unlikely that archive.org can provide you with enough bandwidth to replay it "on the fly".

@Vitaliy_Kiselev: I included some shark footage especially for you, so you can see how well behaved they are :-) - even though moving, bigger animals, are almost impossible to get pictures of that would really benefit from 4k resolution.

My findings on the usuability of the LX100/NA-LX100 for the purpose:

Pro:

  • great lens for almost all underwater scenarios, including macro shots
  • white balancing much better than with the GH2 - color correction in post can be much more gentle
  • very good resultion and reasonable recording bandwidth in 3840x2160p24

Neutral:

  • focusing still usable only with "AFS" and manual - no reasonable operation with continous autofocus, "depth from defocus" only used for still images

Con:

  • optical image stabilization generally useful but does cause annoying "stuttering" for intentional pans.
  • Insufficient recording bit rates for 1080p modes - so you can't opt for e.g. 1080p50 shooting if you are after Sailfish, Dolphins or alike were 4k wouldn't reveal more details anyway

BTW: It would really help if Panasonic allowed to assign a "trigger AFS" function to some function key - it is annoying that if you press slightly "too hard" on the trigger to only "half-press" it, some unhelpful error message ("cannot take picture while recording") will pop up when you try to re-focus while recording.

Clownfish Eggs. GH4 underwater with Olympus 12-50mm http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12562/clownfish-eggs.-gh4-underwater-with-olympus-12-50mm Tue, 10 Mar 2015 21:02:26 +0000 NickHope 12562@/talks/discussions I shot these saddleback clownfish tending their eggs with a Panasonic GH4 in a Nauticam NA-GH4 housing. I used an Olympus M.Zuiko ED 12-50mm f3.5-6.3 EZ lens in the special Nauticam port that allows switching to the 43mm macro mode.

I love the panning and cropping capability that 4K gives me when publishing in 1080p. The slow zooms at the start and end were done in post and the most closeup shot at 0:43 was just a straight crop to 1080.

Underwater videography using GH2 http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4751/underwater-videography-using-gh2 Fri, 28 Sep 2012 17:13:45 +0000 karl 4751@/talks/discussions After returning from my recent vacation at Curacao - which was all about diving and trying out the underwater housing I bought for my GH2 - I wondered if anyone was interested in sharing experiences with regards to underwater videography using the GH2, and the unavoidable post processing it requires?

If you want to watch the underwater video that I produced at Curacao, you can download or play it directly from archive.org - this link is to the 18 MBit/s .mp4 file that I encoded (size 3.6 GB), you can also watch a seriously down-scaled / low-quality / low-bandwidth version here.

I used FlowMotion 2.02 in 24H mode, the 14-42mm Vario X and no artificial light to produce the above linked vieo.

Let It Rain - A Rainy Day Shoot http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2919/let-it-rain-a-rainy-day-shoot Wed, 18 Apr 2012 05:15:19 +0000 arteology 2919@/talks/discussions

There was a hailstorm here last week. Luckily we had the camera with us at the right time. Our friends had a really good time playing in the rain, we tried to capture some of the enjoyable moments and thought of making it into a small music video. Also this is the first time we tried to pull off some ultra slow motion shots with our Canon 550D. Hope you all like it. Thanks

First Underwater deep SEDNA test http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2693/first-underwater-deep-sedna-test Mon, 26 Mar 2012 04:58:18 +0000 LongJohnSilver 2693@/talks/discussions Hi all,

Saturday finally I got my Nauticam housing so I had the chance to bring with me underwater. Actually I had organized a deep dive with my friends already. So it wasn't the best circumstance to test a brand new equipment: too many things to pay attention to: gases, scooter, depth... but I did not resist bringing the new housing and lights with me. I had a lot problems trying to get the proper light orientation (2x L&M SOLA 2000). The lumix 8mm fisheye has a huge angle so the lights must be moved back to fill the scene. Anyway... just a test with sickening shots.

@driftwood SEDNA A settings, mostly ISO 500, Lumix 8mm wide open (it's quite soft at the borders). All the shots taken between 60 and 75meter (195 - 246 feet)
