I got it because I'd like to use some Canon lenses that have no aperture ring. Sadly, corners are not quite as sharp and there is a little more bulging. Also, inside the adapter is less space because of electronics, and some vintage lenses wont fit without cutting protruding pins.

SD cards speed tests http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3152/sd-cards-speed-tests Wed, 09 May 2012 07:50:51 +0000 humpman 3152@/talks/discussions Here are the simple instructions.

  1. Download HD_Speed zip file from http://www.steelbytes.com/?mid=20
  2. Extract the HD_Speed.exe executable from the zip file and start it. It may hang for a while (Not Responding) when it starts up because it is scanning your system for drives but eventually will become available.
  3. Set the parameters to Bits/Sec, BlockSize=32KB, Mode=Write and Duration 01:00.
  4. Insert your blank SD card in your computer. HD_Speed will destroy all data on your card.
  5. Choose the appropriate drive letter in HD_Speed and run the test. Be careful here, don't choose your other drives. When you're done, you'll want to format your card before using it.
  6. Report your results in Mbps along with the following information:
  • Card Reader
  • Card Brand
  • Card Type (SD or SDHC or SDXC)
  • Card Class
  • Card Size (in GB)
  • Date Purchased
  • Card Write Speed (in Mbps) Current and Average

There are 8 days left of the Kickstarter. The 290fps 720p sprinkler video from the "Gold" model looks nice. The 200 fps 1080p video from the "Platinum" model looks like something may have gone wrong when uploading to the web. There is a weird banding thing going on in the footage. I'm personally waiting for better 1080p footage before I buy. Anyway many stretch goal were reached and there is now going to be an internal battery, better case, 3D option, and a high speed expansion port for a future high speed media module or to connect to a PC for longer takes.

I understand this adapter gives an extra stop of light and allows me to use 35mm glass. My question is, how do I determine what the f-stop will be and focal length of a full frame lens once equipped with the lens turbo? For example, if I attach a Canon 50mm f1.4, would the focal length still be 50mm and the f-stop still 1.4 - or would it be less?

I appreciate your help,

GH4 as a picture camera http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11591/gh4-as-a-picture-camera Sun, 19 Oct 2014 04:56:22 +0000 eurocameraman 11591@/talks/discussions The GH4 is the first camera from the GH line up ( I got them all) and even the first mirrorless model ( I got the EM-1 and still have the Nikon1) that I would consider to replace my Nikon D800 for my paid job.

GH3 was too weak on the vie

wfinder and its pictures were missing something (compare to EM-1 or D800) to be pleasing out of the camera or after post processing.

This Saturday, I took advantage of one class I was orginazing for my students in Shanghai (China) to do some shots with the GH4 I was doing high speed shoot workshop (Freezing water with Flash or High Shutter speed) and the GH4 did great.

It is the first camera I am using, for that type of topic, able to take so many jpg+Raw continuous fast shots without filling up its buffer too quickly. Much better than any of my students camera (Olympus EM1, Nikon D800 and D7100, Canon 700D and 70D...).

I used an Olympus 45mm f1.8 for that series of pictures (Manual focus)

From the GH4, I like the lasting Battery (5 times more duration than the on in the EM-1), the comfortable viewfinder (size, sharpness, shape), the peaking assitance for MF and the overall ergonomy of the camera. I sold my EM-1 as I couldn't cop with its weird menu, its poor battery life and one important missing feature: A physical switch to quickly change focus mode. I get it on the GH4 at the exact right position.

The EM-1 still produce more vivd and natural color, but I also like the signature of the GH4. Smoother, but great.

Only one things is still not good enough is the Dynamic Range (or Contrat ratio) of the viewfinder which is too contrasty; highlight are too easilly overexposed in high contrast situation, which is not visually accurate and comfortable to use.

This is my latest short film. Shot on a GH3 with Canon EF L Primes (from my 60D days) and a manual aperture adapter (wish the new speedbooster was out earlier, and wish the GH3 had the focus peaking feature like the GH4 does).

I like the Vivid setting in the GH3, the blacks look good after grading. This wasn't aimed as a cinema production, instead TV with a slight filmic quality!

Few things I would of changed, would have lost the massive DOF to one of my interviews. Broke my lens hood on the Canon 100mm f2.8 IS lens and found I had some casting/refraction on certain shots without it.

Gracias.

There seems to be no foreseeable standardisation of electricity worldwide - despite the obvious cost savings that would produce in producing everything from turbines to appliances in the one standard.

Smart switchable power supplies in domestic appliances have managed to cope with the different countries' power supplies, however we all still know how the fast-flicker of electric lighting involves adjusting shutter-speed of video shooting.

image

The waveform of 230 volt, 50 Hz compared with 110 V, 60 Hz.

Frame rates for TV and video have traditionally corresponded to multiples of the AC cycle and 60p is often cited as an ideal frame-rate, for smoothness - but as one of the majority who lives in a 50Hz country, I'd like to see a future standard of 100fps video one day.

Contax lenses to Canon EF + Speed Booster http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10258/contax-lenses-to-canon-ef-speed-booster Sat, 26 Apr 2014 09:37:21 +0000 spencerb 10258@/talks/discussions I have a Panasonic GH3 and am investing in some old Zeiss Contax Yashica glass. I intend to use the Metabones Speed Booster with them but also want to keep my options open in the future.

  • Safe Option 1: Buy Metabones Speed Booster in Contax/Yashica -> Micro Four Thirds mount. Connect C/Y Zeiss glass. Profit.

  • Theoretical Option 2: Buy Metabones Speed Booster in Canon EF -> Micro Four Thirds Mount. Adapt Zeiss C/Y glass to Canon EF mount. This allows me to share lenses with Canon bodies if necessary and also mount standard Canon EF glass to the Speed Booster as well. With the limited range of wide angle Zeiss C/Y glass available this also could make things easier. It saves me buying multiple $400 Speed Boosters.

Question is: Is there any reason NOT to do option 2? I know it will allow a greater chance of error in the adaptors, but will the C/Y -> Canon EF even mount to a Canon EF -> MFT Speed Booster? Is this entire idea completely stupid or have I stumbled on accidental brilliance?

THANKS!

GF2 prefered shutter speed for video http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10007/gf2-prefered-shutter-speed-for-video Mon, 31 Mar 2014 05:49:30 +0000 ephtrackx 10007@/talks/discussions Just to clear things up - I've read that in spite of 60\50 fps recording the sensor output in GF2 is only capable of 30\25 fps. So the "ideal" or so-called "cinematic" shutter speed for video would be 1\60 or 1\50 but not 1\120 or 1\100? Thanks in advance for your answers. It's just so confusing - why have they made 60\50 fps recording while in fact it's just doubling the initial framerate without actually having an option for 1\2 slow motion?

Lenses to use with GH4 / 4K Cameras http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9575/lenses-to-use-with-gh4-4k-cameras Sun, 09 Feb 2014 13:37:30 +0000 JanH 9575@/talks/discussions I'm pretty excited about the potential of the GH4 (and I suppose any other 4K cameras at $2,000 or so). I am currently using the GH13, mainly in 720p mode with a variety of legacy full frame lenses. Canon FD, Minolta MD, Nikon, Helios, Pentax etc. These all produce a lovely image, less clinical than the Panasonic 14-140 kit lens, IMHO.

Now with 4k coming along, I'm wondering if these older lenses will have any chance of producing the detailed images that the higher resolution sensors are capable of. Or, whether the way forward would be to use an RJ or Metabones speed booster with these lenses to get the detail/ resolution? It would be a shame to not be able to get the benefits of 4k unless using m43 lenses.

Does anyone have any experience, or opinions on this subject? I'd appreciate any comments.

Odd Framerate Mystery with GH2: No problems, just don't understand something. http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7431/odd-framerate-mystery-with-gh2-no-problems-just-dont-understand-something. Thu, 04 Jul 2013 12:27:22 +0000 Brian_Siano 7431@/talks/discussions I did a video shoot recently, and we decided to shoot it at 29.97 fps. So, I set my GH2 to use the high bitrate setting, and set my exposure and manual focus, and we did a few takes.

Then I noticed that I'd made a mistake: I'd set my shutter speed to 25, i.e., 1/25th of a second. I was concerned that the stuff we'd shot would be unusable, with strange blurs or occasional frame skipping or pull-down, but it looked just fine. (I've shot at 2 frames per second, and that tends to duplicate a lot of frames.)

As I said, there's no problems I need to fix here, but if someone could explain to me why this setting didn't screw up my video, I'd appreciate it.

Improving speed in Premiere Pro CS5 http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5951/improving-speed-in-premiere-pro-cs5 Tue, 29 Jan 2013 16:28:34 +0000 Brian_Siano 5951@/talks/discussions My system's a quad-core 3.2mhz machine, with an Nvidia Geforce 670 card (lots of CUDA) and more than enough memory. Sadly, though, the playback of my AVHCD files is frustrating; sometimes, even playing at quarter-resolution turns choppy. (That may be because the files are very long, and the compression algorithm requires a lot of back and forth.)

Anyway, I'm looking to get better performance without having up upgrade the system, and it appears that there may be 2 strategies. The first is to set up a RAID disk system for video editing. The second is to convert my video files to a less-compressed, more intraframe-like format, so playback may be faster, and edit that. So I have a few questions.

  1. Let's say I want to take my hi-def AVHCD files, and render copies in another format that PP can play back faster. Is there a video format that'd work for this purpose?

  2. How much can a decent RAID system speed up playback in Premiere Pro?

  3. Which is preferred; SATA drives hooked to the motherboard, or USB 3.0 drives?

Online free training source, and some other questions? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6193/online-free-training-source-and-some-other-questions Wed, 20 Feb 2013 12:26:20 +0000 TravisBickle 6193@/talks/discussions I am looking for a good free online tutorials for color grading, because the most I saw were made by people who juste crush the blacks and make the yellowish highlights and blue shadows - trying to imitate Transformers? Are there any quality tutorials guides on this subject?

Also do you think that one should start with a simple color grading tool like Magic bullet Colorista/Looks or Color Finesse or move directly to more advance stuff like DaVinci Resolve. Also i heard some criticizm of Adobe Speedgrade, what is your take on that?

Do you need well lit scenes for color grading or can you grade scenes that are lit using only the sun?

Looking for zoom lens recommendation with requirements http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6111/looking-for-zoom-lens-recommendation-with-requirements Wed, 13 Feb 2013 21:43:28 +0000 super_spyder 6111@/talks/discussions Hey there I'm looking for a recommendation for a zoom lens with the following things, but am having a hard time finding it. This is going to be used with a Preston FI+Z or C-Motion unit on an FS700, possibly with a speedbooster if it is a FF lens.

-Hard stops on zoom and focus, most likely a manual lens. I'd be afraid of breaking an AF lens even if it has hard stops.

-Zoom and focus rings can't change position while zooming or focusing

-Must be in the "normal" to wide range on the wide end, so anything with a 17 or 24 or 28 or 35 on the wide end. I don't care much about the long end.

-Constant aperture, is a major plus.

I do not need constant volume on the lens, or anything very fast.

Any help would be appreciated.

Fast conversion from AVHCD hi-def to smaller format? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5259/fast-conversion-from-avhcd-hi-def-to-smaller-format Tue, 20 Nov 2012 18:07:18 +0000 Brian_Siano 5259@/talks/discussions I use Premiere Pro CS5 for editing hi-def video. And even though my system's fairly robust (Phenom II quad core, 16 gig RAM, a GTX 670 card with lots of CUDA) it still chugs. I'd thought about taking my video files and rendering them as lower-resolution files, in another format, to enable Premiere Pro to handle things more easily. I figure, I could do my editing, and then replace the low-res files with the originals. (And then there'd be finer editing, color correction, etc.)

Premiere Pro's renderer isn't exactly swift: it'd take twenty hours to render 2 hours of HD video into standard def. Is there a program that can render down a low-res version of an AVHCD file fairly quickly?

Short high speed capture macro http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4928/short-high-speed-capture-macro Thu, 18 Oct 2012 14:34:32 +0000 DrDave 4928@/talks/discussions Hi y'all--I need to capture some different kinds of macros in high speed for short duration. The clips only need to bee four or five seconds long. For example, water drops. Does anyone have a recommendation whether burst mode is better than high frame rate for this, and what is the best camera to use. Thanks.
