I was searching for a cheap alternative to the SanDisk 45MB/s Extreme Cards for use with Flowmotion v.2.02 on my GH2. I made a list which I will update now and then. I mostly also check for performance using the Fast-action 3GOP on GF1 and the Reliable In-Camera-Playback patch for the GH1. I used the "Death Screens" and also checked for spanning on those cards.

Spanning at 24H-- does this exist? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6307/spanning-at-24h-does-this-exist Sat, 02 Mar 2013 14:07:05 +0000 Brian_Siano 6307@/talks/discussions I've finally acquired a Sandisk Extreme Pro card, 95 mbps, 32 gig, and I'm trying to find a patch that will span reliably at 24H.

I've been trying various patches, at 24H and 24L, and here are my results: Sanity 5.1 and Flow Motion don't span in 24H, but they span in 24L. Intravenus 2, Quantum 9b, Quantum 2 don't span in either mode. I'm trying Cake 2.3 right now.

Now, I understand that one needs a Sandisk Extreme Pro 64gig card to be absolutely sure that spanning can work. I'm not sure why that is, but that's been reported. But others seem to be able to get some of the above to span on the 32gig card (for example, Quantum 2's supposed to be able to do it).

So I have two questions. Is there a patch that reliably spans the 32gig card? And is this an indication that I got a bum 32gig card?

ADDENDUM: Cake 2.3 seems to be spanning in 24H m mode. But my questions still stand.)

Which 4K to choose on GH4? (Too many notes, Mozart!) Sat, 04 Oct 2014 14:06:25 +0000 mschubb 11488@/talks/discussions I'm an experienced shooter (GH2, EX1, Canons, etc.) and just got a GH4 this week. Was expecting to ease into 4K, shoot camera tests, try out workflows and then do something "real" in 4K somewhere down the line.

BUT - an unexpected project just came up and I'll be shooting doc interviews straight away. Producer just found out I have a GH4 and asked about shooting 4K -- mostly to have better reframing options in post.

My first (and second) instinct is to say "not a good idea" because I know I can deliver beautiful 1080P with no surprises in post. And no one on this project has 4K experience. Post will be quick: Adobe Premiere CS6, 1080P timeline and minimal grading if any. All the shoots will be interviews, interiors, nicely lit. SD cards limited to existing Sandisk Extreme Pro 95mb/s.

Frankly, the real problem is that I'm overwhelmed by the number of 4K recording options for resolutions, recording formats and data rates, with little time to figure things out. (And no time for testing so I can have my own professional certainty.)

Anyone with GH4/Premiere experience have any wisdom or suggestions about "safe and easy" 4K recording format settings for this situation? Or links to good discussions/posts about merits of the various 4K format choices on the GH4?

Any advice, help or links will be much appreciated. Thanks!

I actually had the same error with a 8gb extreme pro and switched to the 32gb one because I thought the 8gb one might be too small.

Would be very nice if somebody could help me out finding a solution. 24p mode works fine though most of the time.

I also tried both cards in two different GH2 models and got the same result (accidently bought two bodys).

edit: Is the 24p mode the one I should be using anyway, or are the hacks turning the manual mode also into shooting 24fps, I am a little confused by that to be honest.

thanks a lot!

Could we get a dedicated thread, or formal FAQ, going about this? A list of cards, their read/write speeds and general reliability? Names of patches and which cards they work with?

I was very surprised the camera mentioned I only had 0,5 hour of recording time - also when I re formatted the card twice. I was using the AVCHD mode 50 p 28 Mbps.

Same amount recording time, also when I switched to MP4 and Mov. I double checked the card on my notebook just to be sure they didn't place a wrong sticker - but it actually is 32 GB.

Then I tried some more cards and it's not the camera - it's this card. Have bought another card and it has the same problem here.

Then I tried resetting the whole camera to factory defaults - still the same problem. I made a recording of 0:30 hour and then checked the memory card on my macbook. It sais I have still 25,4 GB memory left. When I putted my card back into the GH3 it said I have again 30 minutes despite the fact that it told me earlier that it was full. Then I initialized the card again, getting again the 30 minutes. Shoot spent 60+ euro's spend on a 32 GB card that's runs so poor!

Hope somebody has an answer as I will have lots of problems returning these cards. Guess the card maker will blame Panasonic and vice versa.

Vanilla Hack Crashing Sandisk Extreme 95mb/s http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6649/vanilla-hack-crashing-sandisk-extreme-95mbs Tue, 09 Apr 2013 21:33:58 +0000 sesame2013 6649@/talks/discussions I applied the vanilla hack, tested it and was able to crash it reliably at 12000 ISO even when using the SanDisk Extreme PRo SDHC UHS-I Card 32GB. (Any rapid or semi rapid pan crashed it). I did some further testing (rapid pans at regular ISOs) and it seemed stable enough to bring on a shoot, so now I'm out in the field and it occasionally crashes at 160 ISO when dealing with complex outdoor scenery.

I'm confused and surprised that a card rated up to 95mb/s is crashing with a hack that is at 44mb/s??? Has anyone else experienced this? It also crashes on my older Transcend Class 10 16GB cards but not that much more frequently. Completely lame given the cost differential between these two cards.

I'm considering reverting back to baseline, but nervous to do so in the middle of a shoot (the vanilla hack was my first hack on the GH2 so this is still new to me). For now I'm working around it. Any advice or thoughts are appreciated.

Issue with Macbook Pro 13 2011/SD Card http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6161/issue-with-macbook-pro-13-2011sd-card Sun, 17 Feb 2013 16:33:50 +0000 Hakosuka 6161@/talks/discussions Hi I done a search but couldn't find anything related to my problem.

When using my Sandisk 64GB 95Mbps card and Macbook Pro I get error code 36 when trying to copy MTS files to the desktop. It's very temperamental and I haven't been able to fix it. It works fine if I use a USB card reader. The only issue is when I'm using OS X and the in built reader. Ironically the in built reader works fine when I boot into a Windows bootcamp so I believe the problem lies within OS X. Has anyone else got the same combination and have the same issue? I also get this issue with the 8GB version of this card. I've tried formatting both within camera and software.

The only way I'm able to really copy files from my card is to keep taking it out and putting it back in until it eventually copies over completely.

SanDisk 32GB Class 10 died without warning http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5597/sandisk-32gb-class-10-died-without-warning Thu, 27 Dec 2012 22:15:41 +0000 Meierhans 5597@/talks/discussions Before I start: The mentioned Sandisk card is known to be one of the best choices for high bitrate recording with GH2. If you are new to all of this, this post should not mislead you to buy from another vendor. Just don´t. For now SanDisk SDHC Ultra 32GB Class 10 / SanDisk 64GB SDXC Extreme Pro are the two cards you want to buy. Period.

To make a sad story short: After nearly two years of recording with similar hardware (GH2 + Driftwoods latest/Flowmotion + several SanDisk SDHC Ultra 32GB Class 10 UHS-I 30MB/Sec) without any problems ever I turned on my PC the day after shot to backup data and it would not recognize the card - at all. No corrupted filesystem, no request to format it, just if as if there was nothing inserted into cardreader. Windows Drive Manager does not see any new volume when I insert card. Tried to put it back to GH2 and it keeps saying: No Memory Card.

The day before I reviewed footage for client, all was fine. Footage is quite important - could possibly shoot again but would mean a lot (!) of hassle and would loose quite some credits from client. Any kind of data recovery service will need to be payed from my own pocket as it was my cam. Worst case scenario.

What can be done? Any ideas?

Importance of Proper Tests for Reliable In-Cam Playback: Lessons from the Field http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2017/importance-of-proper-tests-for-reliable-in-cam-playback-lessons-from-the-field Sun, 15 Jan 2012 14:35:26 +0000 qwerty123 2017@/talks/discussions ===NOTE: none of what I say below is meant belittle the fantastic and wonderful low gop patches that driftwood has produced (or any others with "extreme" patch settings). If anything, this is my fault for not testing thoroughly enough. But I think my experience is worth sharing===

==MY TEST==

I went on a shoot this weekend, and was using Sandisk Extreme 16gb 30mb/s cards. I wanted to ensure both spanning and playback in camera for the shoot, so I went with driftwoods "spanmybitchup" patch. I did just a few short preliminary tests: the test I did was to shoot the papasarts star chart (which I've attached--I also attached the more extreme codec test chart v2 2010), and let it run. I waved my hand around in the frame from time to time and also had some talking to get audio. Everything seemed good: I was getting spanning and smooth playback in camera with audio. (EDIT: also attaching Stray's death charts with color information!)

==MY SHOOT==

So during the shoot, after a few shots, I was getting the message "motion image cannot be played" for all my clips (or something like that I don't remember exactly)--my heart sunk! An actor asked me to check to see if we recorded something on a previous take, I had to say that "yes it was" without checking. I was worried about requests for playback--and this was only with one actor: imagine this on shoot with clients! For certain shots, I wanted to be sure that something was recorded since I wasn't at the camera, and I couldn't do this. The scene I was shooting was an actor in a car at night--he was lit and most everything else was dark. That's when I got the messages. I put in a new Sandisk card, and formatted it. Reshot the same scene and I was getting the same error.

==LESSONS==

1) In camera playback is important at least for some of us, and for some, like me, it is even more important than low gop. For me, I am willing to forego a very very high quality low GOP setting (awesome work driftwood!!) that doesn't have playback in camera on good SD cards for an improved long GOP with ultra reliable in camera playback. I'm NOT saying that everyone wants this or should want it (especially if you have the cash for more super high end SD cards or for extra harddrive space). But I'm guessing some people are in my situation as well.

2) It seems there's a relatively standard procedure for patch development (using streamparser, tweaking settings incrementally, etc etc). BUT there seems to be no standard procedure for testing spanning and in-camera playback. You might not think that makes a difference, but it seems that it does: it seems to matter what you shoot when you are testing things like spanning and in-camera playback. Or, at least the number of clips you shoot or the ISO you shoot at makes a difference: otherwise, I don't know how to explain the divergence between my pre-shoot tests and what happened on the shoot. I welcome some constructive thinking about standardizing spanning and camera playback tests.

==DESIRES==

The ideal for me would be to get a hack that improves quality over the stock settings, that has very very reliable spanning and in-camera playback with audio, and works on good quality cards like the Sandisck 30 mb/s (16gb). I know some people are getting the SandDisk extreme pro 64gb cards... but a lot of people (like me) already have a stash of good quality cards and don't want to fork over even more money to get these super high end cards.

I did test w/ @cbrandin 's (Chris's) 66M patch. We know that this doesn't span (but getting around 10 or 11 minutes is okay for me, although I'd love spanning). But what I did notice is that I couldn't get in camera playback with this either. I'm going to try the 44M patch.

Thoughts?

Sandisk 30mb - Dead? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3169/sandisk-30mb-dead Thu, 10 May 2012 11:17:15 +0000 Nigel785 3169@/talks/discussions Just flew to Vegas, my Zoom recorder is toast and so is one of my Sandisk 30mb cards. Using a San Disk 32 GB 95 MB/s SD card I have recorded footage with the Sedna AQ1 patch. It plays back in the GH2 without a problem but on my MacBook Pro (V10.6.8, 2.8GHz, 4GB Memory) the files only show up as white document icons and can neither be opened with QuickTime Player nor with Final Cut Pro 7 (which quits if I try to import the .MTS files). I do not have this problem with the Sedna CQ20 footage where I am using the same GH2, the same San Disk card and the same MacBook Pro. Is it because the built in SD card reader of my MacBook Pro can not handle the Sedna AQ1 footage? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

cannot load any GH2 patches from new Sandisk 64GB/95mb/s http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2422/cannot-load-any-gh2-patches-from-new-sandisk-64gb95mbs Mon, 27 Feb 2012 15:12:56 +0000 THX1965 2422@/talks/discussions I have the popular Sandisk Extreme HD 32GB 30mb/s which allows me to load any GH2 patch just fine. However, when I tried the same with my brand new fast Sandisk 64GB card (after formatting it in my GH2), no patch is recognized from that card when I hit the green button and try to load it. Has anyone else had the same problem?

I noticed the 64GB card shows up as "Untitled" on my Mac (after formatting it in my camera), while the 32GB one is called "NO NAME". When I change "Untitled) to NO NAME on my compter, it still doesn't work. (I am running the latest version of Lion). The card (64GB) does however work fine recording with any patch and I do have the other one for laoding patches.

But I still want to find out what the problem could be. Thanks in advance for any hint.

GH2 Hack - File Sizes http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1694/gh2-hack-file-sizes Fri, 09 Dec 2011 22:20:12 +0000 wastedthelight 1694@/talks/discussions
I was wondering how much footage a 16GB card would hold (figured I'd be better off getting several 16GB then 32GB and keep copying the data to a laptop during a shoot).

Been looking at the 16GB SanDisk Extreme Pro (45mbs).

I'm guessing this also largely depends on which settings I will end up using. I'd be shooting at 1080p. Seems like 42mbit is popular but I've been seeing a lot of 176mbit popping up lately.

Basically I want to make sure I'm not going to only get like 8mins of footage per 16GB :)]]>
