Panasonic Vlog: matching non-Vlog footage

I'm working on a project where we shot with three Panasonic cameras: a GH4, a GH2, and a GX7. On the GH2 and GX7, we used the Standard setting, but I decided to try using Vlog on the GH4.

Obviously, my question's about matching the color grades. I can't see to find a set of settings or a LUT that would take my GH4 footage and conform it to the standard Panasonic curves in any consistent way. The LUTs that are closest-- the standard Vlog to v35, Balazar's luts-- have two faults: they're a bit greyish in the low end, and they're actually kind of dim, so I have to adjust the floor and boost the low-to-midranges.

Seems to me that there ought to be a LUT that accurately brings the Vlog footage to something very close to Standard. Any suggestions?

GH3 with dead LCD (flex cable issue)

First of all I had the wobbly GH3 LCD hinge which was repaired under warranty a couple of years ago.

However, when I got it back after repair (in 2014?) the LCD did not turn on when it was extended away from the camera body. I shipped it in for repair again and as far as I recall the complete hinge assembly with cable was replaced. Now the LCD worked correctly again.

Summer of 2016 the LCD went dead again. However some light tapping/knock shock to the side of the body/hinge makes the LCD turn on again in some positions, but the colors are sometimes posterized or the image is darker than normal. There is no wobbly hinge, but it seems that the flex cable in the hinge has issues yet again.

Looking for parts on ebay I find both the flex cabel as a separate part and the flex cable allready attached to the hinge assembly.

Do anyone have experience replacing the complete hinge with flex cable?

Also, I'm kind of disappointed about the flex cable malfunctions. Is this a typical problem of cameras with rotating LCDs? Looking at the GH3 flex cable parts on ebay they seem to sell a lot...

Just need longer recordig (and clean HDMI) for GH2

Decided to do a last minute shoot for Thanksgiving weekend on my Panasonic GH2. Still a big fan of the camera for low-cost shoots.

We used the Panasonic 20mm for the opening shots (would have preferred the entire shoot on this lens but we were in a time crunch) and the Panasonic 14mm-140mm for everything else. A couple focus issues, but overall happy with the content from such a short time frame.

Here is the final product:

Blackmagic Video Assist VS Atomos Ninja Blade

Need to pull the trigger between the Blackmagic Video Assist 5" VS Atomos Ninja Blade for my GH4. Urgently needs suggestion on which is the better one (now that the BMVA has got rid of its small problems via firmware). I have 2 of those recommended SD cards for the BMVA. So, ideally i would save 200$ on the SSD's. Looking at other pros and cons between the two which make the extra spending for Atomos worth or not worth it.

Smart Rendering GH4 4K on Windows?

Before I start archiving the best parts of my footage in MagicYUV lossless .avi format at a bitrate 18x bigger than the original, I am wondering if anyone has found a way to reliably smart render (no recompression) 4K UHD MP4 footage from the Panasonic GH4. My typical nature footage features a lot of unwanted head and tail. Really I just want to split the files on the PC, not in-camera. I don't care if it's forced to i-Frames or if the first and final GOPs don't render well.

The "main" NLEs won't do it. I tried TMPGEnc Smart Renderer and that didn't work. I expect it's beyond VideoReDo and Womble.

I have heard that Cyberlink PowerDirector tries it but there are glitches in the result from version 12 (reported at http://www.avsforum.com/forum/161-camcorders/1533217-cambridge-uk-4k.html ). Unfortunately the version 13 trial version doesn't support 4k so it would mean spending $80 on the program to test it.

I also notice that Corel VideoStudio Pro X7 features "4k smart rendering" and there is a fully-functional trial version but it's 800MB.

GH2 Stills Problem

Recently I started taking stills with my gh2 in addition to using it for it's AMAZING video.

When I manually focus, whether through the LCD or LVF just before the image is in focus to my eye it looks soft and dreamy more so than out of focus, and beyond the subject it will start to actually look out of focus.

I took some when it actually looked IN FOCUS and I feel like it just doesn't look as sharp as my old Canon 60D (By quite a bit to be honest)

I'll post a picture so you can see. I shot this in manual, f/2.8 at 70mm on a tripod with around 160 shutter speed and 200ISO. I'll post a before and after grade.

Do you think this is an operator, lens, or camera problem?

Now no longer in manufacture, Varavon loupe for GH3/4 bodies. It's in good condition with only very minor signs of use. It doesn't have the leather strap, that was removed because it just made fitting more awkward, although it doesn't seem to make any difference to the rigidity or light leakage. The only current alternative is the VARY-i €285. Offers around £120+pp. I can mail it abroad.

I am still using 2 good old G6 for a documentary project, but I have an issue (not new) with it. When I choose the exposure through the viewer and it looks fine to me, the result, after transfering to the computer, is an overexposure of 1 to 2 stops easily. Is there anyway to control what the viewer indicates me, so I can do the right exposure straight away? I am using only primelenses (Nokton 25mm, SLR 17.5, Takumar 85mm), so I have the ... "shoot without lens" button selected in G6 menu. Thanks for helping.

GH4 External Vlog White Balance Metadata

Is there a way to view the precise Kelvin reading of GH4 footage in Premiere Pro CC metadata or any other software? The DP shot in varied White Balances in V log External & i need to be able to get the accurate temperature data of the footage he shot on.

Also, i am using Filmconvert (GH4+VLOG) to grade. The WB parameter (in Film Convert) is an offset rather than a setting in my past experience. Would it then actually wreck my clip if i dialed the Film Convert WB parameter over to 3200K from it's default position on Daylight if the footage was shot on 3200K too?

X920 adds level gauge, Level Shot function and built-in WiFi. The high-end body also is capable of plug and copy HDD recording, has a 1,152k-dot touch-enabled 3.5-inch LCD, and a 25x optical zoom lens with tilt and blur correction. In other words, otherwise it is X900.

An 263,424-dot equivalent EVF is complete crap, as usual, it is not updated for last 7 years, I think.

The HC-V720 is lower in the lineup, offers exactly SAME 21 optical zoom lens as V700 (just added number in digital zoom) added built-in WiFi, 20.4-megapixel faked still picture capture, and an old 3-inch touchscreen LCD. The V720 also allows for plug and copy HDD recording and also adds near-field communication for easy control utilizing a smartphone. And yes, 1/2.33" sensor spec is used for marketing and active stabilizer with only small central portion used for actual image.

Anyone used the Panasonic 35-100mm f2.8 with the GH3? (Micro jitters question)

The issue of micro jitters with the Panasonic 35-100mm f2.8 was addressed in firmware updates, but depending on the camera, I have seen varying results. On some cameras the jitters issue is now gone, on others it is as bad as ever!

I use the Panasonic GH3 - has anyone used this lens with this camera and could comment on whether the micro jitters are still there or not?

Panasonic GH4 Audio Levels

Hi all,

I'm considering upgrading from a GH2, mainly due to the slightly better audio abilities of the GH4 (headphone jack, 3.5mm input). I shoot a tonne of interviews so it would come in handy. I've just got a few questions about the GH4 which I'm finding difficult to find answers on...

FYI: the audio devices I'll be using with the GH4 are the Rode Video Mic Pro or a Sennheiser wireless lapel mic (e3 kit).

Is it possible to adjust audio levels via a function button or some kind of PHYSICAL button on the camera?
If not, is the touch screen audio level adjustment actually useable during shooting or is it very fiddly?
Assuming I buy a GH4 that doesn't have the buzzing issue, is the audio quality acceptable?
Are there any random quirks to the audio of the GH4 I should know about?
Does the GH4 have any issues like the GH2 where the audio levels change slightly once the 'record' button is pressed?
How is the audio level meter? Is it accurate / helpful etc...?

I'd be keen to hear from anyone shooting and recording audio with the GH4 and get their feedback and opinions. It'd be great to ditch the Zoom H4n recorder that I use with the GH2.

When Vivaldi published his Four Seasons concertos, he included sonnets which were inlaid into the original engraving. In a concert, even if the sonnets are included as printed text it is not quite the same experience as seeing the text accompany the music.
