I'm looking at the current UK asking price for a new Panasonic GH2H, and wondering whether or not it would be a good idea to go for a used camera...

As things stand, I have seen that the general asking price for a new GH2H is currently around £800 - £900 online.

One thing to note here is that I'm just looking at prices to get a rough idea of total cost at the moment, not actually in the market for this equipment until I get the funds together (being a student it can be a difficult task!)

I realise that on top of this I will need to invest in a quality Rig & lighting/audio equipment. The audio equipment isn't really an issue so much as I know what to look for, but as far as finding a quality used GH2H with a rig and lighting equipment, I have no idea what to look out for or where to look on the internet.

I wondered whether any of you here know of some good places to find a second hand GH2H and if you think it can be a good idea to go for a second hand video camera in the first place? Also whether the camera can be bought in conjunction with the necessary rig and lighting gear for a combination of more controlled fictional short film production projects as well as documentary style work too...?

Thanks for any guidance on this matter - I have seen that there are some amazing deals available for lighting and rigs through this very website. I just wonder if there is the option to buy everything al at once, second hand?

Thanks for your time.

Specifically watch the second video. Its very short and to the point. Really thought Canon was going to be giving Panasonic and Olympus a run for their money - I'll let you be the judge, though.

BTW, did not see this posted anywhere else, if it is, please close thread, @Vitaley.

Panasonic's New Weather Sealed SD cards http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4190/panasonics-new-weather-sealed-sd-cards Thu, 09 Aug 2012 16:35:02 +0000 christianhubbard 4190@/talks/discussions source: http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/09/panasonic-preps-sd-cards-that-survive-heat-water-and-x-rays/

"The cards can take the kinds of punishment that we often associate with rugged gear, such as temperatures from -13F to 185F, immersion in 3.3 feet of water for half an hour and the usual steep drops. It's beyond this that the resistance levels become truly exotic: the cards are also built to survive zaps of electricity, proximity to magnets and exposure to X-rays. If it all becomes too much to bear, the design will even fuse on the inside to prevent fire burning the card from within. Those who like what they see will only have to decide whether or not they want the SDAB range's 95MB/s read speeds and 80MB/s writes or are willing to settle for the SDUB line's respective 90MB/s and 45MB/s transfers. "

sounds like they're prepping for a new weather sealed camera, eh? ;)

I'll probably do one more of these tests with no wind to see if it lessens the severity of the 'vapor' artifacts. I think that will always be there but it depends on the weather. I don't believe OIS or hacks can take care of it. If you guys know of how to minimize it, please share. I may be asking too much of the cam cause the reach is an insane 1,560mm (w/ETC) :)

GX1 Hack Coming? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2121/gx1-hack-coming Fri, 27 Jan 2012 11:32:28 +0000 kris33 2121@/talks/discussions The Panasonic GX1 has been released and it is getting great reviews everywhere. It's the perfect successor to the legendary GF1. It's beautifully built, with fast focus and great image quality.

A hacked GX1 - which would enable stuff like high-ISO filming, manual video controls and higher bitrates - would make it the perfect travel camera. Small and light (with small lenses too, unlike the NEXes), yet great at video. Right now it's just "okay" at video, hacks would enable it to show its full potential. Since the GX1 allows direct recording to MP4 I guess that'll make it a little bit easier to hack than with the other models where you have to deal with the dreadful AVCHD format.

Since Vitaliy has said that G3 is next after the GF3 has been hacked, I think it would be fitting to work on the GX1 right after that. I've read several places that the GX1 and the G3 is quite similar. They both have the same sensor apparently. Vitaliy have self said that "It is G3 in other body, without EVF and all else is almost the same." That'll hopefully make it easy to hack right after the G3 has been hacked..

A firmware update was released a couple of days ago, which I guess will make the process a little bit easier too.

What do you guys, and especially Vitaliy, think?

Panasonic first partner of Olympus? invest up to $637M http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3487/panasonic-first-partner-of-olympus-invest-up-to-637m Wed, 06 Jun 2012 03:49:36 +0000 Manu4Vendetta 3487@/talks/discussions Japanese electronics company Panasonic may be planning to invest up to 50 billion yen (US$637 million) in Olympus as it aims to make headway into the healthcare industry.

According to a report by Kyodo News on Wednesday which cited unnamed sources, the deal between Panasonic and Olympus was valued at 30 billion yen (US$382 million) to 50 billion yen (US$637 million), which will make the former the biggest shareholder in the latter company.

A separate Reuters report stated that Panasonic, which has been hampered by its loss-making TV business, have been exploring the idea of entering the healthcare business as it offers more stable revenues. Olympus would benefit as it would have access to funds for its restructuring and marketing efforts, it added.

Last week, Olympus was reported to be in talks with Sony and Panasonic to decide which company could become its capital partner, with the investment figures said to be in the "tens of billions of yen" for a more than 10 percent stake in the endoscope maker. The report also noted the plan calls for 2,500 employees to be laid off.

GH2 Film Modes - Matrices and Dynamic range http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3315/gh2-film-modes-matrices-and-dynamic-range Wed, 23 May 2012 13:56:55 +0000 shian 3315@/talks/discussions So I've been doing some extensive testing on the different film modes available on the GH2 that I will post soon, but below are a few things I've discovered that might be of use to you all.

All tests were done with the following settings (-2,-2,0,-2) except Vibrant (-2,-2-1,-2), using a gray card, my hand as skin tone, a piece of skin tone colored felt, and color swatches consisting of primary colors, black and white, sky blue, and earth tones. Attached are stills from one of the Skin tone tests

Cinema - while it does render pleasing midtones, and really handles white highlights very well, skin tone highlights turn greenish and blow out very quickly. Shadows falloff very quickly. The result is a very cinematic look in the midrange but leaves you a very small tolerance in terms of DR. If shooting a flat 2:1 style scene this may actually work very well for you.

Vibrant - Terrible shadow response. Even with the saturation set to negative 1, the boost in color vibrance is nothing that can't be reproduced in post with less chroma smearing shooting Smooth which has a better shadow response. Vibrant stretches it's highlights, and compresses it's midtones in a way that is very hard to undo in post. Everything Vibrant has to offer can be achieved in post shooting with Smooth.

Smooth - The most even response curve of the bunch, handles shadows and highlights very well, no chromatic aberrations above 75% like some of the other modes, low grain in shadows down to 20%. Best overall shooting mode.

Nostalgic - GREAT Shadow response. Stretches shadows and mids evenly, very decent skin tone, but begins to break down above 70%, heavy highlight compression. Very warm, but this can be compensated for in the white balance by adding blue, and a little green.

Sensor cleaning, Eclipse, dust membrane? (GF1) http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3398/sensor-cleaning-eclipse-dust-membrane-gf1 Tue, 29 May 2012 05:55:09 +0000 alphaomega 3398@/talks/discussions Hello Vitaly and all the community, I am here to kindly ask you for some advice.

My near three years old GF1 collected some dust on the sensor that I'm not able to blow out with my Giotto blower. I have searched the web for viable solutions (other than sending the camera for service) and learned something about the so called "Wet method" sensor cleaning technique based on Eclipse, swabs and PEC-PADs.

But during my research I have read somewhere that in the Panasonic bodies there is a dust protective membrane (part of the anti dust system) placed over the low pass filter of the sensor, preventing the direct access to the low pass filter surface and I don't know if this is true or not.

I guess that you, by dismantling some panasonic body, looked at the sensor many times and coud give me some advice regarding this issue: do you ever noticed that the exposed sensor is covered by a sort of dust membrane or something else? Because if there is such a membrane I think that it is not possible to directly clean the sensor without damaging the membrane and/or the sensor. And more in general, do you have some experience regarding this issue?

Any comment/suggestion is welcome and will be highly appreciated. Many thanks in advance for the attention.

Ciao :)

At last, I'm going to be getting my hands on an NTSC GH2. It'll be my first DSLR camera I've ever used (Coming from a Kodak Zi8/Flip Video) and I was wondering what I needed to know to get the most out of it. Basic starter stuff as I have no plans to hack it yet. :p

For example, what speed/model SDHC card will I need?

I saw a thread that had different "settings" which can make the video look gorgeous, how do I use these and what would be best for indoor low light shooting? (http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/953/gh2-settings-vault-most-popular-settings-in-one-place/p1)

How do I get the best quality video out of it?

Is the stock lens (14-142mm) worth using at all?

Those are just a few questions. Anything else you guys can tell me would be wonderful. I love this place!
