When highlights get blown out the rolloff from the blown out high light on peoples faces goes to a sickly yellow on edges and sometimes the skin tone looks mottled. Oddly I tried using other profiles like GH4 with similar results which leads me to believe it is a problem with more than just the G85 color transform. I have sent samples to Phase One and the final answer was "I will pass on to R&D for re-profiling consideration". I figure if anyone else is experiencing the problem submitting it to Phase One may make it a priority. I processed the same file with Affinity photo and did not have the color issue.

Werner Herzog Reviews: The Red One MX, The Sony F-35, and the Digital Bolex 16 http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13019/werner-herzog-reviews-the-red-one-mx-the-sony-f-35-and-the-digital-bolex-16- Thu, 21 May 2015 05:17:09 +0000 eddavid 13019@/talks/discussions

Very grateful to do a test with the world-famous filmmaker, Werner Herzog. He came down to my studio last week to do a quick test for his next film, "Untitiled Film About Death and Little People." Special thanks to the actors and the camera people - Nachiketa Amin, Phil Kibbe, and Carolina Ravassa and my producer Lily Henderson. Dedicated to the character development coaches I had - Chris Bagnall, Mariel Snynan, John Meese, Jaimie DeFina, and Sean Kennedy and my film school teacher who said, "Werner, you are never going to make it. Not with that facial hair." I graded DPX files 12 bit out of f35, redlogcine and reddragoncolor2, and BMD gamma from DB. My coloring job was lackluster, to say the least. Inconsistent. Digital Bolex fans - I'm sorry - I couldn't figure out how to make the footage not look terrible. I am sorry. I failed you. I am ready for you to tell me how I loaded in the footage wrong. That is okay. I make many mistakes in life.

Nice handle bar option for 19mm and 15mm handheld rig... http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10943/nice-handle-bar-option-for-19mm-and-15mm-handheld-rig... Fri, 01 Aug 2014 12:34:09 +0000 n5p 10943@/talks/discussions Hey if anyone is looking for a low cost alternative for 19mm handle bars for a handheld rig, I found a pretty good one. I just wrapped a feature film on my BTR1 and was looking for those handle bars only, but came across this one from Camtree... http://www.thecinecity.com/eshop/search.php?mode=search&page=1Good thing I found out because these ones are waaaayyy better than the simple handle bar that just slides on.

Our B Cam had the original Red handle bar grips only and those ones don't lock well, and slide around. These ones from camtree were rock solid the whole shoot, good build quality, light, and dependable. And the price was quite a bit lower than anything else I could find. Also they work for 15mm as well as 19mm rods. Check em out, definitely makes shooting handheld way easier... and as a bonus sometimes I was able to use it to shoot low level, on the ground type shots and could use the rosettes to adjust my level, like a mini tripod almost. Well worth the cost.

Birger Engineering still exist? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10888/birger-engineering-still-exist- Sat, 26 Jul 2014 05:12:08 +0000 elementalracer 10888@/talks/discussions Does anyone here know if Birger Engineering still exists? Their website looks like it hasn't been updated in over a year. I have a Birger Canon EF mount for a RED ONE that needs to be serviced and I'm not sure where to send it off to? I sent them an email just to try but I have yet hear back from them.

Anyone out there happen to have any dealings with them recently? Or possibly know of another place one could send a lens mount like this to get repaired?

Thanks guys!

EasyRig users listen up! Flowcine Gravity One for sale! http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10433/easyrig-users-listen-up-flowcine-gravity-one-for-sale- Thu, 22 May 2014 07:44:54 +0000 Tobsen 10433@/talks/discussions I am selling my hardly used Flowcine Gravity One including hardcase. It is in a very good condition.

It is a mechanical two-axis gimbal intended for use with the Easyrig. It can hold rigs up to 16kg (!!!) and doesn't require any batteries.

There is one scratch on te outside (see photos) that doesn't affect the performance of the gimbal. During transport, I accidently locked the screw that locks the axis - never do that! The screw bend and scratched the surface of the metal. I didn't replace the screw because it is basically not necessary for operating it.

Flowcine just released on upgrade for the bearings on the handle. This is highly recommended it you want even smoother operation!

The reason I am selling it is that I happened to not invest into an Easyrig, which I planned on for this Spring. Unfortunately, I had to cut costs somehwere :-(

The retail price in Germany is around 2450 Euro excl. VAT. Incl. VAT is a bit more than 2900 Euro. http://www.toneart-shop.de/flowcine-gravity-one-black.html

I would like to ask 2100 Euro incl. VAT. I think this is very reasonable for this condition.

Item is located in Bremen, Germany. Shipping not incl.

Car Chase video I shot with Hacked GH2 - GH1 and Red One MX http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9296/car-chase-video-i-shot-with-hacked-gh2-gh1-and-red-one-mx Wed, 08 Jan 2014 09:40:41 +0000 n5p 9296@/talks/discussions Hey guys and girls,

I bought a BT Red One MX and shot this TV show trailer which got sponsored after by Toyota/Scion.

We used hacked GH2 and GH1 cameras through out, see if you can tell where - although I'm sure you'll be able to pick out the obvious ones. 3 person crew mostly, mad low budget and a lot of time and care went into it.

Which music works best with the trailer... version 1 or 2?

We are trying to get as many YouTube hits as possible before approaching a few networks and FX Canada,

Thanks!

Consolidated Specs for Cinema Cameras with RAW http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5270/consolidated-specs-for-cinema-cameras-with-raw Thu, 22 Nov 2012 05:29:39 +0000 thepalalias 5270@/talks/discussions I went through the list of topics in Raw Cameras and did not see a list like this, so since I had been compiling some for the blog I posted today at http://www.pasadenapulse.net, I thought I would put them here so that others can add to it (and correct any errors that are statistically likely to have been added. :)

These cameras all have (or are slated to have soon) RAW recording capability in some form.

Max Horizontal Resolution

  • BMCC: 2.4K
  • Arri Alexa: 2.88K max horizontal resolution.
  • Sony FS-700: 4K expandable with 1.92K at release.
  • Sony F55: 4K max horizontal resolution (4096x2160).
  • Canon C500: 4K max horizontal resolution (4096x2960 RAW max).
  • Sony F65: Greater than 4K.*
  • Red One/Red One MX: 4.5K max horizontal resolution.
  • Red Scarlet: 5K max horizontal resolution (but 4K max horizontal resolution at 24/25/30P).
  • Red Epic: 5K max horizontal resolution.
  • Red Dragon: 6K max horizontal resolution. Unreleased.

*As for the Sony F65, I don't want to get into that can of worms. With it's 20MP sensor, let's just say "easily 4K, probably more in the future" but not get too far into it other than to say that the current recording format is 4K.

Cameras with Global Shutter

  • Sony F55

Max Framerates at 4K and Highest Resolution (with the color depth recorded)

  • BMCC: Cannot do 4K. Max 30P 12-bit log at 2.5K.
  • Arri Alexa: Cannot do 4K. Max 60P 12-bit log at 2.88K in 16x9 mode.
  • Red One MX: 30P 12-bit at both 4.5K and 4K.
  • Canon C500: 60P 10-bit at 4K.
  • Sony FS-700: Upcoming 60P at unspecified RAW bit-depth in 4K.
  • Sony F55: 60P 16-bit linear 4K.
  • Sony F65: 120P 16-bit linear 4K.
  • CMV12000: 90P 12-bit or 150P 10-bit at 4K.
  • Red Scarlet: 30P 16-bit at 4K. 12P at 5K.
  • Red Epic: 150P 16-bit at 4K. 120P 16-bit at 5K.
  • Red Dragon: Unknown 4K (expected to meet or exceed Red Epic at all framerates but guaranteed 120P at 5K). At least 85P 16-bit at 6K. Unreleased.

Native DR

  • Sony FS-700: Untested in RAW.
  • Red One (not MX): 11.3 stops official.
  • Canon C500: 12 stops official. (Though the highlight roll-off has been garnering praise)
  • BMCC: 13 stops official.
  • Red MX (as used in MX/Scarlet/Epic): 13.5 official. (Some sources measured at under 12 but I'm not invested in one measurement over the other).
  • Arri Alexa: 14 stops official.
  • Sony F55: 14 stops official.
  • Sony F65: 14 stops official.
  • Red Dragon: Over 15 stops official. Unreleased.

And of course, the Red Scarlet, Epic (and upcoming Dragon) support the HDRx mode that some people like and others do not, which is officially specified as increasing dynamic range to 18 stops (with a lot of caveats to go along with it).

Tripod head that can handle both a dslr and a red one http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3694/tripod-head-that-can-handle-both-a-dslr-and-a-red-one Tue, 26 Jun 2012 09:47:10 +0000 mlysbakken 3694@/talks/discussions Hi! I'm wondering if there exists an affordable fluid head that can handle the weight of a red one while still being able to properly balance a fairly lightweight dlsr rig (GH2 with rails and monitor). I know there are heads in the $3000+ price range that can do this, but that would blow my budget. I'm prepared to pay around $1500.

Thanks! Magnus

GH2 Film Modes - Matrices and Dynamic range http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3315/gh2-film-modes-matrices-and-dynamic-range Wed, 23 May 2012 13:56:55 +0000 shian 3315@/talks/discussions So I've been doing some extensive testing on the different film modes available on the GH2 that I will post soon, but below are a few things I've discovered that might be of use to you all.

All tests were done with the following settings (-2,-2,0,-2) except Vibrant (-2,-2-1,-2), using a gray card, my hand as skin tone, a piece of skin tone colored felt, and color swatches consisting of primary colors, black and white, sky blue, and earth tones. Attached are stills from one of the Skin tone tests

Cinema - while it does render pleasing midtones, and really handles white highlights very well, skin tone highlights turn greenish and blow out very quickly. Shadows falloff very quickly. The result is a very cinematic look in the midrange but leaves you a very small tolerance in terms of DR. If shooting a flat 2:1 style scene this may actually work very well for you.

Vibrant - Terrible shadow response. Even with the saturation set to negative 1, the boost in color vibrance is nothing that can't be reproduced in post with less chroma smearing shooting Smooth which has a better shadow response. Vibrant stretches it's highlights, and compresses it's midtones in a way that is very hard to undo in post. Everything Vibrant has to offer can be achieved in post shooting with Smooth.

Smooth - The most even response curve of the bunch, handles shadows and highlights very well, no chromatic aberrations above 75% like some of the other modes, low grain in shadows down to 20%. Best overall shooting mode.

Nostalgic - GREAT Shadow response. Stretches shadows and mids evenly, very decent skin tone, but begins to break down above 70%, heavy highlight compression. Very warm, but this can be compensated for in the white balance by adding blue, and a little green.
