For 2016, four of the five nominees for Best Cinematography were again captured using ALEXA cameras. These cameras high DR, natural color reproduction, and high sensitivity, all begin with the performance of ON Semi image sensors used in the system.

ARRI publishes an explanation of image sensor technology used in its cameras:

"Although the science behind the breakthrough performance of ALEXA's custom designed CMOS sensor is complex, the use of large photosites and a Dual Gain Architecture are its two main principles.

By employing unusually large photosites (in today's world of tiny cell phone sensors), ALEXA's sensor exhibits high dynamic range, high sensitivity and low crosstalk. The larger a photosite is, the more light it can capture and the lower the noise.

The Dual Gain Architecture simultaneously provides two separate read-out paths from each pixel with different amplification. The first path contains the regular, highly amplified signal. The second path contains a signal with lower amplification, to capture the information that is clipped in the first path. Both paths feed into the camera's A/D converters, delivering a 14 bit image for each path. These images are then combined into a single 16 bit high dynamic range image."

The Cameras Used by the 2015 Tribeca Filmmakers http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15284/the-cameras-used-by-the-2015-tribeca-filmmakers Mon, 27 Jun 2016 06:13:35 +0000 Manu4Vendetta 15284@/talks/discussions From indiewire.com

In advance of this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, Indiewire sent out brief questionnaires to all of the filmmakers (you can read their full answers in our Meet the 2015 Tribeca Filmmakers Series). As part of the questionnaire, we asked which camera(s) they shot on.

Their responses showed a wide variety of camera used – everything from drones to cellphones to the Swedish Ikonoskop, which is a digital camera meant to emulate the 16mm film look.

The most popular choices across the board were the ARRI ALEXA and RED Epic, as well as various models of Canon and Sony cameras. Almost all of the filmmakers produced their films digitally – the only films that specified having shot on film were "Franny," "Transfatty" and "Tumbledown."

We’ve arranged this master list alphabetically by camera – please note that some films used multiple cameras, so you’ll see a few repeats as you browse.

Online Video Distribution: Best System? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12086/online-video-distribution-best-system Sat, 03 Jan 2015 09:21:20 +0000 Brian_Siano 12086@/talks/discussions I have a hi-def project that I'd like to sell through online distribution channels. When I research things like Amazon Createspace and Vimeo, I keep coming across drawbacks: Vimeo'd require buying a pro membership at $200 a year, which I can't afford at this time. Createspace limits me to DVD resolution, and some reports have it that it doesn't get a lot of traffic anyway. Amazon On Demand would be marvelous, but I can't find how to make the product available that way. Another site, Kinonation, looks interesting, but I don't know how well it can market the video.

Does anyone have any insight into the best system to market my video?

Lenses to use with GH4 / 4K Cameras http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9575/lenses-to-use-with-gh4-4k-cameras Sun, 09 Feb 2014 13:37:30 +0000 JanH 9575@/talks/discussions I'm pretty excited about the potential of the GH4 (and I suppose any other 4K cameras at $2,000 or so). I am currently using the GH13, mainly in 720p mode with a variety of legacy full frame lenses. Canon FD, Minolta MD, Nikon, Helios, Pentax etc. These all produce a lovely image, less clinical than the Panasonic 14-140 kit lens, IMHO.

Now with 4k coming along, I'm wondering if these older lenses will have any chance of producing the detailed images that the higher resolution sensors are capable of. Or, whether the way forward would be to use an RJ or Metabones speed booster with these lenses to get the detail/ resolution? It would be a shame to not be able to get the benefits of 4k unless using m43 lenses.

Does anyone have any experience, or opinions on this subject? I'd appreciate any comments.

Algalia • a very personal mix http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7743/algalia-a-very-personal-mix Sat, 10 Aug 2013 13:55:59 +0000 maxr 7743@/talks/discussions

This muddy "old" video is a mix of:

• A very personal/biographic collection of stills taken in Czech Republic, Spain and Portugal between 2006 and 2007

• Plus a tweaked version of Gertrude Stein's Family Living can go on existing a text extracted from her The Making of Americans book together with a shakuhachi flute (unfortunately can't remember neither song or performer's name) as SOUNDTRACK

• And still my own poem Algalia all mixed up directly in Quicktime

Vimeo Tip Jar feedback http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6389/vimeo-tip-jar-feedback Wed, 13 Mar 2013 12:28:21 +0000 apefos 6389@/talks/discussions Since 5 months I went Plus and I am using vimeo Tip Jar feature in all my 54 videos. In this time I got 25400 plays but I got nothing on Tip Jar, NADA!

My main videos with most plays was the anamorphic project, neatvideo tutorial, super8 telecine tutorial, also lenses tests.

Please share your feedback about Tip Jar, did you get something?

and what do you think can motivate people to send Tip Jar to a video?

LCD anti glare protection http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1758/lcd-anti-glare-protection Fri, 16 Dec 2011 16:43:16 +0000 DVANZ 1758@/talks/discussions http://www.photodon.com/c/Universal-Custom-Sizes.html
Its recommended to get 1/16th gap and one side for easy install and removal.
They do clear options as well as options for touchscreens.
Like XH that is 25% glare reduction and thin. Thicker is the XT which reduces 65% glare but softens the image somewhat and the XF options that is thicker again, 65% glare reduction and softens your image.

I find this is a better option visually that purspex on small screens. I just adds that layer of protection for that opps moment.
see this review.
