Hello, I've done some hacking on the olympus usb firmware update protocol: http://linda.karlov.mff.cuni.cz/~jove/oly/

I've made my own fake update server in python (oly_http.py) and captured the usb communication from update tool in virtualbox windows with wireshark (update.usb.dump, use filter: (scsi.sbc.opcode >= 0xc0 || scsi.spc.opcode >= 0xc0) && !(scsi.status == 0x00)). Protocol dissection is in proto.odt. Custom scsi commands are used, sg3_utils package can be used to send those. oly_scsi.py handles initial reads (serial no. and other info) and works ok. I didn't attempt yet to do the writes, since there are still some open questions.

OK, so you want that tack sharp goodness at 75mm. And the Olympus 75mm does indeed provide it. But can you get that same sharpness in the centre for cheap? Why, yes you can, Just bolt on the super plasticky and very lightweight Olympus M.Zuiko DIGITAL ED 40-150mm 4-5.6 R MSC. Which one do you prefer, A or B?

Olympus em5 ii hack or firmware update for improved video quality?

I am looking to buy my first real video camera and liked the look of the em5ii. especially because of that amazing stabilization. Unfortunately when I looked at some sample video it looked pretty bad. Is it possible a firmware update or a hack like the one on the gh2 could improve the quality of this otherwise great camera?

I wish Olympus would do a 20mm lens.

I love the 25mm 1.8 olympus, its compact, sharp, great bokeh, cheap etc but for video its just a little bit narrow for my tastes, doesn't really open up a scene when inside. On the other hand the Olympus 17mm is a little bit wide and distorts faces. I know I could get the Panasonic 20mm but its not cheap and it has a different look than Olympus, I prefer to use the same lens brand and have a consistent look between shots.

Anyone heard rumour of Olympus plugging this gap?

35-100mm F2 Olympus 43 lens

When putting on lens and powering camera I get "Please check that the lens is attached correctly." I put the recommended lens firmware on the card as usual but when I pres play I get "No valid picture to play" instead of being prompted to load the firmware. What am I missing? Could it be because I am no longer running the original camera firmware? I get the same message when I try to restore it but can restore an unaltered copy saved through ptool. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Declicking Olympus OM Lens - how to remove ring?

Hi all,

My first post on this forum - recently it kept popping up whilst researching legacy lenses for m43 so I figured there may be a few experts in here who could help me out.

I'd like to declick my OM primes (28 and 50) and whilst the procedure looks straightforward enough I'm having a problem at the first hurdle: taking the ring off. I've tried using a mini flat-headed screwdriver and pushing into the engraved lettering; I've tried pushing down on alternate sides and then around the ring; I've even put on some rubber gloves to get some purchase, but it won't budge.

Does anyone have any other tips that may help?

14-35 f2 Olympus on GH2 - what a glass.. but!

Received this monster yesterday. Its absolutly amazing glass, very nice subtile bokeh even in widest angle, small distortion and chromatic abberation, sharp, direct coupled focus + AF ... well, check the review. So in general I am perfectly happy (and poor now).

Now comes the BUT:
As you can see on the picture this thing is huuge. And heavy. I bought the original Olympus adapter, but still the lense has about 4 mm play at the front. (XY.. not Z ;)

As soon as you touch follow focus things become shaky. I already phoned Oly if there was some kind of clamp to fix it to the rig... but nothing. The cam is mounted in cage, but this lense is simply so long and heave that its to much for the mount i guess.

Any ideas who makes such clamp for a specific diameter? I don´t want to do DIY on this, it should match as bought.

PS:
If you think this would suit better into an existing topic let me know.

360 degree recording & projection

A few years back, the troubled Japanese company, Olympus, showed off a 360-degree HD camera and projector system - the first 360-degree, 1080i camera and projection solution.

Utilizing a proprietary system based around an "axisymmetric free-form-surface lens," the camera could shoot video at horizontal and vertical viewing angles of 360-and-50-degrees, respectively; the images could then be projected in the same range by a separate unit.

That was back in 2007 and nothing has ever materialised from them.

I am trying to help a company involved in the events sector to seek and find a current solution where they could offer a walk-in 360 arena (tent or whatever) and immersive world for an audience to view a dramatic show utilising 360 degree projected switchable backgrounds.

Does anyone know of where this technology is going (is it doomed?) or of any other viable solutions that could be made and put together using today's technology?

Olympus' tactic of playing down the optical performance of this lens need not be necessary. Even though this lens only costs £90 and is little more than a body cap with some glass in it, it is still capable of delivering decent quality images. Those who fancy experimenting with the fisheye look but don't relish the thought of forking out proper fisheye money, this lens is ideal.

Overall, this lens is fun to use, thanks to its compact size and fuss-free operation.

hi all, after 2years sitting on my shelf my 10 Tone Zeiss anamorphic was dusted off for a test. Im sure the weight of the freakin thing is over 2KG! I was going to do a test on my GH2 but never got round to it. Its a very difficult combination to use , but i think its worth it, and only for that special project. Have a gander...stu.

There are same reviews and test of this recorders online. However I can't find any info about Lav mic floor noise difference. I had a chance to check Tascam but I can't test Ls-3. Olympus is a little bit more expancive and has good reviews. Had anyone use or compere them two with clip/Lavalier mic? I know they cheap solution and I don't expect Hi-end here. Id like to know if its worth to het Ls3 over Dr-05?
