'Always Shine', made with a GH series or a mirrorless? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16611/always-shine-made-with-a-gh-series-or-a-mirrorless Sun, 19 Mar 2017 21:15:25 +0000 Manu4Vendetta 16611@/talks/discussions The look remember me a GH series, I have curiosity about. IMDB dont have camera's specification and nothing about in internet. The movie look was a very low budget, for post they needed a kickstarter campaign of a goal $18,000 ended in $22,483.

Anyway, my curiosity is that seeing it I suspect it was with a GH, although they could use some Sony or a JVC camcorder M4/3, and even Samsung, but I lean more to the possibility of a GH.

The cinematography is from Mark Schwartzbard, first first assistant camera of 'Borat', camera operator of 'Brüno' and additional camera operator of 'Up in the Air', 'The Departed', 'Little Children'.

German movie sets new IMDB score record for eternity! http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13672/german-movie-sets-new-imdb-score-record-for-eternity Mon, 07 Sep 2015 13:36:05 +0000 karl 13672@/talks/discussions Being a German myself, I just have to relay this awesome news to you: A contemporary German movie not only set an unprecedented IMDB score record, it did so by a wide margin, making it not unlikely to stay #1 on this

IMDB list for eternity.

Should I be embarassed that it leads the list of... well... the less appreciated manifestations of moving picture artwork? Not really. With its whopping "1.0" score it (a) correctly indicates the pathetic state of our local movie industry (which certainly does not fall short in terms of technology, given how many succesful international movies are produced here), and (b) it gives honest feed back to what results when a bunch of moronic "Youtube celebrities" collect money from their even more brain-dead followers to expose their lack of ideas, talent, determination, intelligence, and everything else that could make a movie interesting to watch in the cinemas.

This work is so abysmal, it will hardly be beaten by anything intended to be a "trash movie", because to intentionally make a trash movie, you at least need some determination and knowledge about the movie business, something completely absent from this pile of crap.

Ah and please, don't feed the makers egos by watching this. Knocking your forehead to a wall for 90 minutes would be more fun and less painful for sure!

Philomena' the movie, DP'd by Robbie Ryan= Beautifully shot! http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10004/philomena-the-movie-dpd-by-robbie-ryan-beautifully-shot Sun, 30 Mar 2014 11:11:42 +0000 maranfilms 10004@/talks/discussions Went yesterday to watch this film, I loved the cinematography. I only wish more movies were shot this way. There was no CGI, or ridiculous un-motivated shots to stimulate the dumbed down unappreciative masses. Nope, just good old cinema at it's best, where shot composition, natural lighting, and film stock are used as a tool to tell the story and create a feel unmatched by silly computer generated effects, even though the majority of the film was shot on the Arri Alexa. However, when the s16 made it's appearance, it worked wonderfully well to convey time change and a feeling of saddened loneliness. The acting was also fantastically convincing, there's no silicone injected duck lip plastic people with bleached white Chiclet teeth and a side of Botox, really, It didn't need the Hollywood glamour and all the façade that goes with. The acting, cinematography and script was more than adequate to tell this story. My only critique was the scoring, don't get me wrong, it's not that it was bad, I just feel it didn't convey as much emotion as it could have, of course it's subjective and being that I'm life long musician, I tend to be somewhat critical. Others may disagree. In closing, If you want to kill a couple hrs. and gorge yourself with some cinematic eye candy, it's well worth the price of admission and a box of popcorn.

Enough Wall of Sound, already! http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9041/enough-wall-of-sound-already Tue, 10 Dec 2013 15:32:54 +0000 goanna 9041@/talks/discussions From FilmSound.org

Sound effects in scenes from Jonathan Demme's Silence of the Lambs

(An example of good sound post-production)...

there were animal screams and noises built into the ambience itself downstairs there. From a little movie I had made years ago called Little Monsters I took this lunatic kind of screaming that I had recorded; I took track, processed it, slowed it down, and played it in reverse. That became one of the ambiences in the room, too. It's the room tone, but the room tone has been made from some guy screaming in pain. Whenever you're down there with Lecter there's this element--it's a low tone that rises and then comes down again. It's very organic as opposed to something you can create electronically. I don't like taking sounds that start electronically; I like sounds that start organically. It' s a lot more fun."

listen to this:

On the other hand, there are movies with fairly gratuitous sound just seemingly thrown-in. Is it just me, or have late movie releases gone over the top with a (Phil Spector-like) wall-of-sound? I long for good, multi-track ambience, foley and vocal sound tracks. Music, when it's a theme, can be most powerful used sparingly but strategically. (Remember?)

I was very scared to do so since it was the only camera i had and couldn't afford a backup camera in case the camera dies. But I must say we had no problems with it. The footage was converted to Apple Pro Res 422 HQ on 5DtoRGB Batch. Edited on FCP 7 on my old Macbook Pro (2008 2.4 Ghz Intel core 2 duo 4gigs. I would not recommend using this computer..it's old and slow, but all i had). I'm pretty happy with the results. I can't wait to get my hands on the GH3. Hopefully movie makes money and I can buy 2 of them!! haha. Anyways, guys.. check it out and let me know what you think. Here's the teaser trailer.

Here is my latest work, a trailer for an Alternate Reality Game taking place in my hometown (Metz, France). This trailer was made to let the players feel the mood of the game. As a student, I did this during 3/4 months, on my spare time. I did the maximum tasks I could handle : storyboard, scouting, directing, camera, grade, cut, very limited "vfx", sound design (enjoyed a lot this part). I learned a lot during this project, and can't wait to start another one !

I hope you'll enjoy it ! Feel free to comment ;)

Thanks to @Vitaliy_Kiselev and @driftwood for their work !

Iris Tweak vs ISO Tweak http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6528/iris-tweak-vs-iso-tweak Thu, 28 Mar 2013 05:54:25 +0000 PCortacans 6528@/talks/discussions (Vitaliy, I have no idea where to post this; sorry if this is not the right place)

I was reading the other day about de-clicking old Nikon lenses, and people's comments about how they'd like to slightly tweak the iris "on the fly" to adjust for minor light changes. Since I have a photographer background, the first thing that came to my mind is "Why would you want to do that? Doing so will change the depth of field!". Ok. Tweaking can be interpreted as "less than a click", that is, less than 1 stop (or 1/2 in some brands). But still, my question to you guys is "Why?" Is it because it is the only basic parameter (Aperture/SSpeed/ISO) that you can change on the fly, and not via camera menus? (You wouldn't want to change the SSpeed anyway.... And for the sake of this discussion, let's pretend we are on the less noisy side of the ISO values). What are the benefits of changing Iris? If you could decide to change Iris vs ISO (which takes me back to "Panasonic: Auto-ISO in Manual Movie Mode, por favor...!!!"), which one would you choose?

As script is a bit difficult especially at the end and possibly left over footage, while seemingly a mixture of drama and road movie conventional. It is a very intimate film, very slow with many long still shots, but in a plastic stunningly beautiful, I love the night shots in it, are a delight to behold.

Nuri Bilge Ceylan is the director of it, while cinematography is by Gökhan Tiryaki. It was shot with a Sony F35. Winner of Cannes 2011.

Big sound, stereo ambience, 3d sound, Binaural audio, the missing link. http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4464/big-sound-stereo-ambience-3d-sound-binaural-audio-the-missing-link. Tue, 04 Sep 2012 14:14:56 +0000 danyyyel 4464@/talks/discussions I have been looking a lot, or I might say listening a lot to audio lately after my choice of buying sound devices mixpre-D has fallen because BH does not ship SD gear anymore outside USA. So looking at different solution, I found one serious candidate in the Olympus Ls-100. Searching for samples, I ended on a set of nature recordists samples in stereo and was really immersed in the audio. One example like this one had a car and very common sound for a movie, and I thought I was at the Cinema. It came like a revelation http://soundcloud.com/ausavim/olympus-ls-100-test-1 . The sound is so tri dimensional and can really feel there. What it told me was how much the ambiance sound was important for a movie and how indie films lack it and sounded hollow. Every-time we hear how we should get a shotgun microphone for outside dialogue and a cardioid for inside one. But no one put emphasis on those surrounding sound and how to capture them.

So I started looking at stereo microphone and remembered the Mitra with philip bloom,

that sounded fantastic. But the price was a bit high, and I saw other like the Audio Technica BP4025 (a bit high also). some example here http://soundcloud.com/ausavim

Further searching I saw another system called Binaural recording when people use mannequin head and ears etc to really simulate human hearing. A company that does it http://binauralears.com/

I don't know what you lot think, but this was really a revelation to me about getting the big movie sound. From what I know is that lot of the sound effect and mixing are done in post to get the stereo or 3d effect. But some of these solution seems more appropriate to the indie crowd.

On Camera Settings question http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3797/on-camera-settings-question Fri, 06 Jul 2012 06:50:03 +0000 jclarkey 3797@/talks/discussions I just recently bought a GH2 that came already hacked. Unfortunately it was hacked by the person before the person I got it off so we have lost track of what version of the Driftwood hack it is. I know it is working because I can already see I have additional ISO settings in Manual Movie mode.

My question is, what or where are the settings I should be using directly on my camera? I switched it over to C3 menu and when tried to record got an error back that my card was not fast enough (which it probably isn't, but getting a new one soon) so this leads me to believe that this is where the highest quality settings live but I still am unsure of what settings produce what results? Is Manual Movie mode just the standard camera mode?

Sorry if this lives on another thread or seems like a silly question, but I new to this whole hack thing and not having the background knowledge is bugging me.

Cheers!

Also how there's no real talk about exact technological underpinnings that would need to be addressed to make this a reality.
