Hi all,

I'm considering upgrading from a GH2, mainly due to the slightly better audio abilities of the GH4 (headphone jack, 3.5mm input). I shoot a tonne of interviews so it would come in handy. I've just got a few questions about the GH4 which I'm finding difficult to find answers on...

FYI: the audio devices I'll be using with the GH4 are the Rode Video Mic Pro or a Sennheiser wireless lapel mic (e3 kit).

Is it possible to adjust audio levels via a function button or some kind of PHYSICAL button on the camera?
If not, is the touch screen audio level adjustment actually useable during shooting or is it very fiddly?
Assuming I buy a GH4 that doesn't have the buzzing issue, is the audio quality acceptable?
Are there any random quirks to the audio of the GH4 I should know about?
Does the GH4 have any issues like the GH2 where the audio levels change slightly once the 'record' button is pressed?
How is the audio level meter? Is it accurate / helpful etc...?

I'd be keen to hear from anyone shooting and recording audio with the GH4 and get their feedback and opinions. It'd be great to ditch the Zoom H4n recorder that I use with the GH2.

Olympus LS-3 vs Tascam dr 05 with Lavalier mic

There are same reviews and test of this recorders online. However I can't find any info about Lav mic floor noise difference. I had a chance to check Tascam but I can't test Ls-3. Olympus is a little bit more expancive and has good reviews. Had anyone use or compere them two with clip/Lavalier mic? I know they cheap solution and I don't expect Hi-end here. Id like to know if its worth to het Ls3 over Dr-05?

Mic Challenge - Help me mic this tough scene

Hoping to hear from the audio experts and others with great ideas, because I have a scene that needs to be shot in a few weeks that I think may be tough. Okay here's the scene: we've got a man indoors, in a large jail cell room, might have tall ceilings, might not, but might be an echo issue too. The scene will last 6-7 minutes during which time the man will be moving around, sometimes waving his arms angrily, sometimes yelling and screaming, and other times talking in a normal voice. My concerns are that if I set levels on recorder to properly record the normal speaking, then the yelling will clip. I am also concerned that if I use a hidden lav on the actor, that I will get handling noise, particularly since he's moving around and waving his arms quite a bit. He'll also be walking around the room ( 12 ft x 12 ft area), and might occasionally turn away from camera while speaking.

So with all those difficulties, how would you mic this scene. I have a recorder and a lav mic, but can buy or rent more recorders and mics (boom, lav, or whatever type is needed), basically whatever is needed, I'll get. So what do you recommend?

is there a boom mic that's good for both outdoor and indoor use?

Working on a feature with about $1000 allocated to audio. I have a recorder and monitoring headphones, but we need boom mic. Is there a boom mic that works well both indoors and out? If not, what recommendations would you suggest for 2 boom mics (one indoor and one outdoor) that together would come in at $1000? Also any thoughts on ability and quality of running mics directly into recorder vs through a pre-amp/mixer? Thanks.

I'm selling a Lectrosonics UCR190 transmitter and corresponding receiver, frequency 539.250, with case, antennas and extra antennas, original lav mic AND Tram mic, A/C adapter. Everything works great; $425 plus shipping; payment through PayPal business payments. NYC area.

BONUS: I'll throw in a Sony variable frequency transmitter/microphone with cable, antennas, and microphone. I'm not selling this separately but including as a bonus because it is in the 'C' frequency band, around 794-803, which is no longer OK to use in the United States because it's reserved for other uses. But in remote areas or outside the US (check for local frequency access), it should be fine.

I also have a Sony ECM-77 lav wired/wireless mic that goes with the Sony. It was originally wired only but I had it modified so it can also be used wirelessly with the Sony transmitter. Add $50 for a total of $450 plus shipping and I'll include it as well.

It's kind of snug on the ME-66 and takes a little coaxing to get it off; it would probably work and be a bit easier to put on/remove with a slightly thinner shotgun mic.

At least it's an attempt to make life easier for us location sound people. Here in the U.S., of course they took away the 700 band and I had heard a rumor that in a few years time the 600s would go. So seeing this helps put me at a peace of mind – I already have enough trouble with finding good frequencies and not getting RF hits as it is. Just thought I'd share if anyone had additional news or wanted to contact their rep.

If you cut off the mini xlr and change the plug connections the same way described in this topic: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4450/akg-c747-premium-quality-mini-shotgun-on-gh2-audio-test#Item_26 this clip mic works directly plugged into the GH2 or any other digital recorder, which has a minimum power on the mic input, no need for further power supply. I am a big fan of AKG, you find them often times for really cheap on ebay etc. I use it normally with the Olympus LS10 for interviews etc and sync it in post, now bothering wireless required.

Upcoming: Free EQ and FX Presets for GH2 Internal Mic and Rode VMP (Possibly GH3)

Some of my recent conversations with GH2 users made me realize that a lot of people could benefit from some decent EQ presets specifically tailored to the GH2 and some of the mics used with it.

I won't make some big marketing push for why mine would be better than anybody else's - in the last decade and a half of working with software FX I've learned there are a lots of ways to make things sound great. I also won't make any money off of this so there would be no point. :) But I do want to make it as easy as possible for people that aren't used to dealing with EQ to get a good sound.

Now here's the part where you come in. The tricky part of making presets is that they have to be widely usable. I'll be making these on a Windows machine (I spend more time in Windows than OS X) so whatever plug-in I make them for will need to work in that environment. I am thinking I would like to use the free ReaPlugs suite from Cockos, but my question is whether people would prefer that I use those or the ones native to Reaper itself?

If I use the ones internal to Reaper, then I seem to remember they may also work on OS X. But if I use the ReaPlugs suite, they will work in any host but Windows only.

Cheap fur for lavalier mics?

I struggle to find cheap fur for use on lavalier mics. The foam type is cheap and easy to find, but the fur type (which is much better outdoors IMO) is harder to find.

Powering shotgun mic with phantom power

I have 2 shotgun mic from China. It works very well. HTDZ. Only problem if i power my mic with phantom power, normal mode dont work, only tele. There is no sound in normal mode. But if i power it with battery, it works. Tried on mixer and my af100. Same result. Any ideas? Thanx
