Neewer 480 bi-color CRI 96 kit review http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/22155/neewer-480-bi-color-cri-96-kit-review Sat, 08 Jun 2019 13:09:42 +0000 DrDave 22155@/talks/discussions This is a brief review. I needed a fill light kit for a shoot in the Netherlands, and I did not want to travel with it from California. I purchased three of these lights and three stands as a kit from Amazon Germany. They were delivered to my hotel in two days. The stands were light, short and cheesy, but they were OK. I wound up using mic stands for two of the lights.
The lights: two knobs for each of the two colors. Can be powered by Sony batteries. They actually look decent. They come with power supplies, not a super long cord. No remote. Totally silent, no flicker. No fan. Did not really get warm as the whole case is one big aluminum heatsink.
There's a diffuser which is your typical thin plastic sheet which clips in. It actually worked rather well. I did not use an umbrella, as it would have really not let much light through.
The quality of the light, while not super bright, was excellent and the closeups have a natural fill light. Just what I wanted. OK, there are better lights, but for the price this was pretty amazing.
Not much to say except that this is a good, cheap, well made light with high CRI. They were super lightweight and came with a soft case. Pass on the stands unless you need short, light ones.
Here's the Amazon description, with photos. etc. This is the kit I bought. Of course, I paid the same price in Euros, not dollars, so it was a bit more, but really that's cheap for three lights and three stands.

The color-rendering index (CRI) is a quantitative measure of the ability of a light source to reproduce the colors of
various objects faithfully in comparison with an ideal or natural light source. The stunning revolution in HR672 with CRI95+ ensures what you see is what you get. It is perfect for color-critical applications such as fashion, documentary
and short film in the studio or on location.

Edge Lit Pro LED Light http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/17787/edge-lit-pro-led-light Tue, 19 Sep 2017 10:35:32 +0000 shoe_e 17787@/talks/discussions image

I came across the Savage Edge Lit Pro LED Light while on the Fstoppers https://goo.gl/nGhwc9 website and I was intrigued.

I was intrigued because I love these new SMD Ultra-slim LED Panels everyone is releasing. I was intrigued because Joe Edelman really knows his stuff and if he's using something it's usually pretty good. I was really intrigued though, because I had seen it before. It's not the first time we've come across something that has multiple brandings or distributors, like Godox, Flashpoint, Cheeta, Neewer, etc. So when I saw Savage showing this light on their website, listed at $311.99, also at BH and Adorama, I was like "EFFFFFFF NO!" I literally sounded out the letter F to be clear.

Why was I so pissed off you ask? Simply because I had seen this light before and I had seen it long before Savage released it. See I dedicate an hour of my day, early morning to be exact, for R&D. I scour the interwebs searching for new Photo/Video tech just to see what's out there. In the spirit of this forum, I'm always looking for alternatives and cheaper yet equally good solutions. In my searches, I had already come across the Yidoblo LED PE-920II as well as its brother, the LED PD-920II. As far as I can tell, the only difference in these models is that the PE-920II comes with a remote, which is something we'll get to because it's an important note, as you'll see.

Who the heck is Yidoblo you may ask, as I did. Yidoblo is a subsidary of the Foshan Meidike Photographic Equipment CO. LTD, also brand themselves as Dison. If you visit their website http://meidike.com/en/, they have sh**load of lighting products, which if you have spent time on ebay, Aliexpress, or any other international marketplace, you may recognize. Some of their products can be found on Amazon as well.

Let's check out the specs on the Meidike site for the Yidoblo LED PE-920II:

2.4G wireless remote control, can control the AE six groups of lights, each group of lights can support 100 lamps; remote control distance of up to 80 meters; power stepless adjustment, the output precision to 100 , the operating data LCD screen intuitive display, easy to operate, Easy to remember to improve work efficiency, can be installed on a tripod / handheld / desktop.

  1. LED patch lamp beads number: 160PCS
  2. the maximum power: 56W
  3. color rendering index CRI : > 95RA
  4. led the average life: 10000H
  5. the maximum number of lumens: 3300LM
  6. color temperature: 3200-5500K
  7. light angle: 120 degrees
  8. power: AC110-240V DC14.5V
  9. the length of 35 * 25 * 1.2CM ; weight 1.35KG

Standard configuration:

  • LED lights
  • the power adapter
  • 2.4G with screen remote control
  • battery buckle, LCD screen

Whether you read the specs over at BH or on Savage's website, it's clear these guys are identical. The only question you may be asking, is maybe Yidoblor ripped off Savage? I don't think that's the case. If you look at the inlcuded photos below, you'll notice that the Yidoblo light comes with a special made Yidbolo remote controller. The Savage also comes with a remote control, but that controller is a knockoff of the remote you find when you buy any Godox remote system. That's right, they may have modified the frequency, but it is the same model.

So why does this matter? Well you can buy the Savage LED for a little over $300, and to their credit, they package it very nicely. At the same time, you can find the Yidoblo scattered over ebay, Aliexpress and Amazon for ~$140-$160.

That's a huge price difference.

Mostly product related work. For DOF purposes, I'd like to be able to get f11 as an exposure at ISO 800 or lower. Light quality matters, so cheap Home Depot strips don't seem highly likely for this task. I'll mix with some other studio lights I have yet to purchase. I'm open to some DIY so long as it's not super involved or some crazy amount of effort (subjective, I know). Ideas?

My Thoughts

I saw these at the Photography Show and thought they were really good value for money. I bought one on the spot! Having tested it I feel my instincts were right and that it is indeed a very useful light. I'm comparing them against 2 year old £3000 Kino Celeb 200s. This is not so much a comment on the quality of the Kinos, which was amazing at the time, but more an observation that LED Lighting just keeps getting better!

Planning on an indie film on a GH4 soon.

Which would you guys recommend, Aputure Amaran HR672W High CRI95 LED OR Yongnuo YN900 LED or Yongnuo YN600?

Is the Yongnou 900 better to buy in a fixed 5500k version (since i get all 900 bulbs to be usable together) or should i rather opt for the fixed 5500k YN600 Led.

Should i go for the Bi color models available in both these brands or the fixed 5500k ones are logically a better option. (Need suggestions, please dont reply saying depends on your needs). Planning on buying 2 of the ones that are suggested.

Also, i am aware the Yongnou are brighter but just wanted an expert opinion based on experience from fellow members. Is the Fan sound issue on the Yongnou's too much of a bother?

Any other LED suggestions are also welcome.

I've been having a idea about an interface's POV, in that you see characters from behind the interface, so that formed the based of this test:

It took more time to set up than shoot (about 2 hours). In this test the Ring Light is set to 50% brightness and the white balance is set at 5600K. I believe its going to be a pretty useful addition to my lighting and the only downside it that I can't find a suitable soft bag to protect it in transit.

The music was assembled from kits from Big Fish Audio.

Newbie looking for CFL advice http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10846/newbie-looking-for-cfl-advice Sun, 20 Jul 2014 21:31:30 +0000 Brian_Siano 10846@/talks/discussions Here's the background. I did a shoot a few weeks ago, using a GH2 and the Cake patch, to shoot interviews. We set up a lighting rig using three LED panels and umbrella stands. While we were shooting my camera's screen showed a set of green bands running horizontally across the image. This was new to me, but I reasoned that the adjustable LED panels might be causing it-- you know, refresh rates and alla that. So I switched to 100-watt incandescent bulbs for the rest of the shoot.

Well, the footage shot with the LEDs was fine, no green bands. But the 100-watt bulbs weren't as bright. So, it seems to me that I should use more powerful lights, and I'm thinking CFLs equivalent to 200-watt incandescents.

So my question is: what color temperature should I look for? Floods or standard configurations (for use with white-umbrella stands)? Do they make dimmable high-power CFLs, so I can adjust the lighting more delicately? (And if I did this dimming thing, would there be problems like flicker or banding with my GH2?)

Sorry if this has been asked before, but the info I found was in many different threads, and I figured, let's assemble it all in one post/thread.
