How do they rate the footage, and what hack is best suited to this type of client. Does any one have any experience with this? Thanks.

GH2 hacked - hangs and have to remove battery http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3265/gh2-hacked-hangs-and-have-to-remove-battery Sat, 19 May 2012 04:22:34 +0000 fatpig 3265@/talks/discussions Hi guys,

A friend of mine and myself are having the same problem. I am using driftwood Mysteron and he is using Cake v 2.1 - and we both get the GH2 hanging up during recording (frame freezes, no buttons react, doesnt shut off, have to remove battery, file is 0 kilobytes). I noticed that Canis Majoris Day was even worse and hung up even more often. Is that problem known?

I have an extrememory sd card 32gb, which never gave me any problems with driftwood up until last month.. he is using some cheap card, but then again, its only cake he's using.

Any help on the matter will be greatly appreciated.

Bulb Mode for Still Photography http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3138/bulb-mode-for-still-photography Mon, 07 May 2012 15:10:17 +0000 el_reverend 3138@/talks/discussions Hi all,

I recently purchased the GH2 and must say that despite all the great features and quality I am somewhat disappointed by not only battery performance but also the crippled Bulb mode.

At this point I am evaluating the camera and trying to throw it into my 'real world' tests as much as I can. One of thie things I set out to do this year will or should involve long time exposures. Now, I have the feeling that I might not need 6hr exposures, but even the missing more than 2min exposures setting is a bit troubling.

I have read through various forums, guide, etc. but have only found a few references to bulb mode exposures for STILL photography. While it seems that you cannot change the firmware to allow for longer exposures, I often see a mention of using external remotes, but it seems often a 'should work scenario' answer.

Has anyone used a specific remote (maybe the one available from Panasonic) to do a longer exposure maybe over 10min or even longer? A) what gear did you use and B) how did you work with the GH2, and C) would you mind sharing an example of such a shot?

I'd hate to return the DH2 just to get a bigger DSRL for a feature that should be included in a camera of this price range and performance level.

Thanks in advance.

The video codec settings sure could use some hacking! :)

Other things like IBIS with video when using an adapted lens might be interesting to hack in as well. The IBIS works with adapted lenses for stills - but not video as I understand it. Big bummer! I guess there are other areas which need improvements as well. And the OM-D is certainly a camera worth hacking IMHO.

Thanks for all the great work and research for getting the best out of our shoots!

The reason I'm posting: Since updating to the lastest 100 Mbps Flowmotion hack (which uses a bit too much space for my current project) , I can't seem to change my firmware anymore. Even with a full battery and the new file in the root folder on the SD card (named correctly of course), the cam simply doesn't show any update message. Going into play mode doesn't work either, nor did replacing the battery and restarting.

Is there a way to force the GH2 into update mode? What could I do?

I helped produce this Got Milk for the competition linked above. I've been busy finishing up my Masters and didn't have time to actually help shoot, but I did do the color work in post. We used my GH2 with the AQ1 Sedna A or B hack, I can't remember now, and I had them record at 24L settings to extend the card life while shooting interviews in public with strangers. Most everything was shot using the 25mm Voigt and a 50mm 1.4 Nikkor. We used a Tascam Dr-40 paired with an Azden SMG2x shotgun mic for audio pickup.

Unfortunately we can't post the video anywhere else until the contest is done. We'd appreciate the votes, but I'm more interested in sharing work done on the GH2! I'll be sure to upload it to Vimeo as soon as we can.

Upcoming film using 2x GH1s, hacked using "LPowell's Peak Reliability Patch," shooting for Black & White destination (probably).

I was intending to shoot colour for monochrome conversion, as there are advantages regarding filtering colour contrast levels in post.

However, my question is this: Being 8-bit acquisition, is there any advantage in terms of chroma levels in shooting chromatic in the first place? In other words, if 8 bit acquisition creates 256 levels, if not shooting colour, does this merely reduce bitrate, or is there a way it can also increase chroma space for a better image?]]>

Because I'm slightle disappointed in what I saw from the new 5D MKIII and D800. They are good for stills, but disappoint still with video. Tested the Canon C300, which does great with my Leica R lenses. But for the moment it's to expensive for me. And to many new models are and will come out this year. So for the moment a GH2 and for the rest, I will invest in more lenses, Follow Focus MatteBox etc... For many projects we rent equipment anyway. It seems the GH2 is better than all the other stills cameras around. My question... it seems, that the allready great GH2 for the price, can get better with a hack and a Patch.. But it seems, that there are allready about a millon different patches around. It drives me nuts.. ;)
But I'm shure somebody can tell me, which one is the best at this moment. My wishes..

Stable !!! Suppose, I will do a payed gig with it. I need to have some reliable camera. Playback in camera. Would be nice if it works with 25P, 50P and 24P.

Allso it would be nice if I can use the ETC.

Maybe some of my questios are silly.. I'm sorry for that. Cheers, Arie.

Relation between version increment and name of bin-file http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2631/relation-between-version-increment-and-name-of-bin-file Tue, 20 Mar 2012 07:45:05 +0000 Speldosa 2631@/talks/discussions My last topic (http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2614/exactly-what-is-the-deal-with-version-numbers-when-hacking-the-gh2) was closed with a reference to the FAQ (which didn't answer my problem) without me being able to comment, so I have to start a new thread (I'm really sorry about this, I don't want to spam the board and would have continued the discussion in the original thred if it was possible).

I'm going to try to be as clear as possible: What's the relation between the version incrament option and the naming of the bin-file itself?

The bin-file naming I think I've got. It seems to me like you always have to increase the number of it compared to the previous (although whatever happens when you get to 99 (that is, if you can start using a three digitit version number) never is mentioned). So I guess I will have to write down the latest bin-file naming in order to patch my camera again.

However, what about the version incrament? Does this have to relate to the bin-file naming in some way (that is, if I go from GH2__V10 to GH2__V11, do I have to set e version incrament to 1?) ? Do I have to take into consideration what version incrament I used for the last patching? Is it culminative? That is, if I remove PTools, will I have to put in a version incrament number that combines all the previous? (Let's say I'm patching my camera with version incrament 2, reinstall PTools, and then patch the camera with version incrament 10. Do I the next time have to patch it with version incrament 13 (2+10=12)?)

Exactly what is the deal with version numbers when hacking the GH2? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2614/exactly-what-is-the-deal-with-version-numbers-when-hacking-the-gh2 Mon, 19 Mar 2012 05:33:53 +0000 Speldosa 2614@/talks/discussions I'm going to hack my Panasonic GH2 and been reading up on the process for quite some while now so I won't screw up my camera. Two tutorials that I've been looking at are this (http://www.google.no/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=web&cd=3&ved=0CDEQFjAC&url=http%3A%2F%2Fosgfilms.com%2Fhack-the-panasonic-gh2%2F&ei=ZgJnT__jOKSl4gTbv5HlBw&usg=AFQjCNGbxsoY8P0JQ0sGl-HX8zlI7NPjjw&sig2=zFS_B1prU7cc2B6Hia756A) and this (http://www.sam-mallery.com/2011/11/an-ez-guide-to-hacking-the-panasonic-gh2/).

Now, everything seems pretty straight forward except when I read about naming and version incraments. That is, there seems to be two things mentioned when talking about version number and version incrament: 1) A setting you make inside PTools where you specify the version incrament. 2) The actual name that you decide for your bin-file that you suqsequently place on your SD card.

For example, the first tutorial above mentions the following:

Step 5: Select Save Firmware and save it as GH2__V1x , the x can be any number from 0 – 9 just don’t over write the original firmware!

When they say "over write the original firmware", what exactly do they mean? The firmware I already have on my camera? In that case, does it matter if it's already hacked or not? Or are they talking about my firmware file that I've downloaded? In that case, why can't I overwrite it? Shouldn't I just be able to download it again if I want to?

The other tutorial mentions the following:

8) If the “Version increment” box in ptool isn’t checked, click on it and check it.

This isn't mentioned in the first guide. Why not? What will happen if I don't?

All this really confuses me. Could somebody give me a clear explanation why this (apparently) is such a big deal? If nobody would havve mentioned anything about all this, I would have imagined that the only thing you needed to do was to load a bin-file onto you camera which will overwrite all old settings and software each time you do it, and that's it. However, it doesn't really seems like that's the case.

"bad file name, camera won't be able to read such a file" http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2445/bad-file-name-camera-wont-be-able-to-read-such-a-file Wed, 29 Feb 2012 18:15:22 +0000 yarlanz 2445@/talks/discussions Some people, like me, have experienced a problem: Being unable to save the hacked firmware for their GH1 (or GH2, I assume) with Ptool, because it just keeps insisting that "bad file name, camera won't be able to read such a file". This, even if the naming follows the rules exactly (in the vein of GH1__133.bin), and nothing seems to help.

I do not know if anybody has reported the solution before, at least I could not find one here or the rest of the internet, but I faced this problem today and eventually found a fix.

The solution is that the SOURCE firmware, the one you load at the beginning, needs to be correctly named as well. When the problem happened to me, I had made a copy/paste duplicate of the very original Panasonic firmware that I had downloaded from the internet. This had resulted to a source filename "GH1__132 - Copy.bin"

One would imagine that it makes no difference, as PTool requests the user to give a name when saving and that is the only thing that has to pass the validity check. However, for some reason the original filename, probably "-" or " " character, echoes the saving procedure and the validity test is failed. For instance, when I finally tested renaming the source firmware first back to "GH1__132.bin and then saving it with the name"GH1__133.bin", it was suddenly again very acceptable name and finally got my hacked firmware saved.
