I wanted to share this film with you to get some real critics from you. I'm active on a Swedish forum already and usually put my films over there to get some feedback but I wanted to hear your opinions as well.

The film is a school project I had, and I wanted to make a short film where I could really show my color grading. So even though I directed, edited and made the vfx in this video, I did it almost only to show my grading skills to then have something to show post companies as a portfolio after my graduation, which was a few weeks ago.

What do you think is good, what can I've been doing better?

I was using GH2, Orion v4b, Nostalgic (-2-2-2-2). Lens was Samyang 35mm 1.4.

Software used was After Effects CS5.5, Premiere Pro CS5.5, Twixtor, DaVinci Resolve. Converted all my files to Cineform .MOV before editing.

On Camera Settings question http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3797/on-camera-settings-question Fri, 06 Jul 2012 06:50:03 +0000 jclarkey 3797@/talks/discussions I just recently bought a GH2 that came already hacked. Unfortunately it was hacked by the person before the person I got it off so we have lost track of what version of the Driftwood hack it is. I know it is working because I can already see I have additional ISO settings in Manual Movie mode.

My question is, what or where are the settings I should be using directly on my camera? I switched it over to C3 menu and when tried to record got an error back that my card was not fast enough (which it probably isn't, but getting a new one soon) so this leads me to believe that this is where the highest quality settings live but I still am unsure of what settings produce what results? Is Manual Movie mode just the standard camera mode?

Sorry if this lives on another thread or seems like a silly question, but I new to this whole hack thing and not having the background knowledge is bugging me.

Cheers!

GH2 Hacks Almost Working; Help Needed http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3734/gh2-hacks-almost-working-help-needed Sat, 30 Jun 2012 04:00:13 +0000 eddietemple 3734@/talks/discussions Hello All,

New to the GH2 hacking world. I am a filmmaker. I shoot narrative fiction. The best hack/patch that I can find that looks like what I want is Kae's 65mbs GOP3 hack, but I understand that it only works for the older version of Ptool. I'm not looking for extreme hacks due to limited memory space and I like a softer look.

Here's my problem: I hacked the camera with the settings following the instructions from various sources exactly as described and everything looked to be fine (unlocked higher ISOs, the remaining recording time on screen was cut to 1/3 that of the native 24mbs). But when I actually recorded footage it looked no better than the unhacked test stuff I had already shot. And when I put it into Stream Parser it was confirmed. I am only getting 24-25mbs and the footage looks bad. When I found out that Kae's settings only worked with the older version of Ptool (3.61) I tried a different 66mbs hack and simply lowered the GOP to 3 in Ptool. Same thing happened. I've tried this several times and get the same thing every time. I'm using a Sandisk Extreme Pro 64gb 95mb/s card, so I'm fairly certain it's not the card's fault. I'm using Ptool v3.65d.

Am I missing something? Any help would be greatly appreciated. NOTE: I apologize if this question has been answered before. This is my first time posting on this site.

Attached are two screencaps of my Stream Parser results. No. 1 is with Kae's settings and No. 2 is the 66mbs that I got from the patch vault topic.

I'm wondering if there exists an affordable fluid head that can handle the weight of a red one while still being able to properly balance a fairly lightweight dlsr rig (GH2 with rails and monitor). I know there are heads in the $3000+ price range that can do this, but that would blow my budget. I'm prepared to pay around $1500.

Thanks! Magnus

Mega Flare: Album Promo (Remember your first shoot?) http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3704/mega-flare-album-promo-remember-your-first-shoot Wed, 27 Jun 2012 09:25:32 +0000 leejb4 3704@/talks/discussions Shooting this video has made me realize three things.

  1. I need to invest in new lenses. I shot this entirely with the 14-42mm Lumix and it was way to dark for f=3.5... I had so much trouble grading because although the setting held up well with the darkness, it was still REALLY dark. I had ISO cranked up to 1250+ most of the time.

  2. Lighting is the most important part of filming. All of this was shot in the rain during a storm that we did not expect would roll in (which definitely gave a cool shot at the end). This had a big impact on the quality of the video.

  3. Practice! Every time I shoot something, I learn something new about the limitations of the camera, what shots look good and which ones don't, how to operate the camera in a different way, which lighting conditions work and which don't, different editing tricks and what not. So I guess I learned that even though this is all a hobby for me, it is just like any other sport or hobby in the fact that you have to practice and develop your abilities in order to create a final product that is satisfactory for you work with and for others to watch.

This is my first "Real" work and there are two versions of the video. The version I felt was most cinematic (minimal grading) and this version.

I sat with the artist and was grading and he kept asking for more "Color" to the shots and once I over saturated and cranked up the color correction tools he was extremely happy while I was left thinking..."This looks horrible." But...I guess I am supposed to create what he likes since it is technically "His" video.

Apologize for the long message, I just thought it would be nice to share my beginner experience with others so they can possibly learn something or for other to just reminisce about what it was like when they shot their very first video. Constructive criticism is greatly appreciated.

Shooting this video has finally made me realize two things.

  1. I need to invest in new lenses. I shot this entirely with the 14-42mm Lumix and it was way to dark for f=3.5...

  2. Lighting is the most important part of filming. All of this was shot in the rain during a storm that we did not expect would roll in (definitely gave a cool shot at the end) and this had a big impact on the quality of the video.

GH2 Patches - Failures report - Common table. http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3652/gh2-patches-failures-report-common-table. Thu, 21 Jun 2012 08:17:35 +0000 GuilleKloetzer 3652@/talks/discussions I´ve been thinking that it would be good to have a table in a dropbox or google doc where anybody can report bugs on any patch. This could be a standard and synthetic source of information or follow up of the patches performance. For the moment I think the only way to recollect info about this is to search in dozens of threads, and this is growing everyday. Is anybody doing a register already? I think the table should include the following columns: patch, brief description of bug or glitch, GH2 settings, SD card type, lens, link to download file if necessary. Any more suggestions?

thanks to anybody out there on this growing community

Anyway, here is out entry into the 48hr Guerilla film festival. Follow the link and make sure to "like" the YouTube video. Also, huge props to those who helped get our "Got Milk" video voted in the top 5 of the got milk commercial competition earlier this year!

Sadly, the graded version of our film didn't export in time and we were forced to submit the ungraded/non-color corrected version of the film. I'm still quite proud of the results. We shot it on the GH2 and the 5DMark III. I'll post the graded version after the contest ends.

HBR = 30fps? 60fps slowed down = jittery? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3580/hbr-30fps-60fps-slowed-down-jittery Thu, 14 Jun 2012 17:59:41 +0000 antonioNHB 3580@/talks/discussions Hi! NEW to the forum and about to Donate in just a second as I have learned a lot on here!

(sorry I started my previous question in the wrong section, sorry mods)

You guys have made me almost sell my 5Dmkii, almost...!

But, I have to say that at this point I'm a little disappointed with the GH2.

First, the hack I'm using is spanmybitchup v2b. I'm shooting on a Nikkor 50mm 1.8.

I was shooting a music video yesterday and had the GH2 as my B camera. I tried to shoot on HBR...when I got home to edit, I realized that it's been shot in 30fps...super let down. I can't use this footage as everything I ever shoot in in 24p....sigh....

Last weekend, I brought it down to Houston for a celebrity basketball tournament. I get there, set up my 5D and walk the floor capturing dunks and stuff like that in 60fps. I get home to edit, interpret the footage to 24fps...its VERY jittery. So, I take a look at more footage. Also jittery and not a smooth slow motion. Some of it was. Weird.

Questions: If I shoot in 24p cinema and I have the hack installed...am I even shooting with the highest quality the hack has to offer or is this still just normal, stock GH2 footage?

60fps. Why is it that I am getting jittery slow motion when conformed down to 24fps? Why is it smooth sometimes? I REALLY don't like to roll the dice especially for events...if you sleep on capturing a moment, or it doesn't turn out good...it's gone forever.

That's all!

Thank you guys so much!!!

FS: Fujinon 9-126mm f1.7 lens + m43 adapter + Hirose cable http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3523/fs-fujinon-9-126mm-f1.7-lens-m43-adapter-hirose-cable Sat, 09 Jun 2012 09:09:12 +0000 ed_lee83 3523@/talks/discussions For sale is a Fujinon 14x 9-126mm f1.7 zoom lens in B4 mount, a B4 to Micro Four Thirds adapter (best one made by ciecio7) and a Hirose to 12v cable. I am selling my Lumix GH2 so this lens has to go too.

The lens is in great condition, I dare say the optics are in near mint condition, save for a few specks of dust. It has a 2x extender which covers the entire Micro Four Thirds sensor. However it drops about 2 f-stops. But you can also use GH2's Ex Tele mode to retain aperture speed. This makes the lens become 18-252mm f3.5(ish). The lens is parfocal!

Demo:

The original motor system is included and has a Hirose cable that was intended for broadcast cameras. The motor system can be detached. There is a macro function allowing you to shoot close-up. It also comes with original hood and generic front cap. The lens + adapter is 1.7kg. On the handle grip I stuck some Sugru to improve ergonomics (refer to last pic). If it doesn't fit for you it is removable. Or, I can remove it for you if you want. The B4 adapter is the best quality made one by ciecio7 from Poland, worth $320 new. The tripod mount is super strong, made of duraluminum unlike the other simple aluminum adapters. It holds up the lens very well - this is important as the lens is much heavier than the camera. It also comes with a rear Micro Four Thirds cap and its original B4 rear cap.

The Hirose to 12v cable allows you to connect the motor system to a 12v battery, allowing you to operate the servo zoom. This made it really handy when shooting, allowing you to zoom and focus simultaneously. There are no auto focus or iris functions. Below is a sample video utilising a battery with the motor system (battery is not included in this auction!). Search "12v lithium battery" on eBay or whatever and they're very cheap and light. Make sure to get ones with plug ports so you can insert the Hirose cable. You could use gaffer tape or velcro to affix it on the lens or rig.

Operating the servo zoom with battery:

I'm asking for US$600 + shipping via PayPal (fees inclusive).

I ship from Hong Kong to USA, Europe, Asia and Australia with fast EMS mail. You can check rates here: http://www.hongkongpost.com/speedpost/eng/rates/index.htm

Recover files from card with error http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3537/recover-files-from-card-with-error Sun, 10 Jun 2012 22:15:49 +0000 charlie_orozco 3537@/talks/discussions Hi. I come to you to ask for help, because I feel very frustrated. I have two Sandisk Extreme 32GB 45MBps SDHC cards, and today I was trying to copy the video files of a shoot I had yesterday, and the card started disconnecting quite often (it was plugged into an external card reader). With various retryings I was able to copy only 6 out of 25 (11GB in total) before the card threw me an error message saying that the card needed formatting. I then got tired and decided to copy the files using the camera, but when I turned it on it told me that the camera needed formatting as well. This never happened to me. I became a little desperate and downloaded the program that the card comes from (it's a one year license code that allows you to download and use RescuePRO Deluxe). I used the program and it recoverd 15,000 M2TS video files, all of them a single frame for only the first two videos (or so it seemed) that weighed almost 30GB. I then formatted the card using the camera and tried again. I formatted many times (it's been 4 or 5 hours now) and the best I could get were the full first two videos, almost by chance, and the ones that matter are the 3 last ones... Now the program shows an error saying that it couldn't recover any files because maybe the formatting added 0 (zeros) instead of the old data, and so it may be lost. But when I try again it recovers more files. Although now they can't be read. Is it getting worse eveytime? Is there no way to recover the files? Can you recommend another program that could work for me? I need this data by the end of the week when the job is due, and I feel desperate. It's kind of a documentary, so I can't shoot this footage for a second time... If you can help me I'll be truly thankful. Best regards.

Formatting external 1TB Drive - NTFS or ExFAT? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3520/formatting-external-1tb-drive-ntfs-or-exfat Sat, 09 Jun 2012 05:10:25 +0000 pundit 3520@/talks/discussions I have just purchased an external 2.5" 1TB USB 3.0 hard drive. The drive will primarily be used to backup GH2 MTS files from SD cards while on location. It will be connected to a Win7 laptop but also needs to connect to a Win XP PC. (I have installed the Microsoft ExFAT driver)

I would also like to be able to connect the drive via USB to my Dune Smart D1 media player. Currently the Dune will not directly read my Sandisk 64g 95mb SD cards which I think maybe a Dune/ExFAT incompatibility issue.

I believe the GH2 formats SD cards to ExFAT.

After searching for a definitive answer I'm still not certain whether to format the hard drive to NTFS or ExFAT. Advice needed - TIA

GH2 Film Modes - Matrices and Dynamic range http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3315/gh2-film-modes-matrices-and-dynamic-range Wed, 23 May 2012 13:56:55 +0000 shian 3315@/talks/discussions So I've been doing some extensive testing on the different film modes available on the GH2 that I will post soon, but below are a few things I've discovered that might be of use to you all.

All tests were done with the following settings (-2,-2,0,-2) except Vibrant (-2,-2-1,-2), using a gray card, my hand as skin tone, a piece of skin tone colored felt, and color swatches consisting of primary colors, black and white, sky blue, and earth tones. Attached are stills from one of the Skin tone tests

Cinema - while it does render pleasing midtones, and really handles white highlights very well, skin tone highlights turn greenish and blow out very quickly. Shadows falloff very quickly. The result is a very cinematic look in the midrange but leaves you a very small tolerance in terms of DR. If shooting a flat 2:1 style scene this may actually work very well for you.

Vibrant - Terrible shadow response. Even with the saturation set to negative 1, the boost in color vibrance is nothing that can't be reproduced in post with less chroma smearing shooting Smooth which has a better shadow response. Vibrant stretches it's highlights, and compresses it's midtones in a way that is very hard to undo in post. Everything Vibrant has to offer can be achieved in post shooting with Smooth.

Smooth - The most even response curve of the bunch, handles shadows and highlights very well, no chromatic aberrations above 75% like some of the other modes, low grain in shadows down to 20%. Best overall shooting mode.

Nostalgic - GREAT Shadow response. Stretches shadows and mids evenly, very decent skin tone, but begins to break down above 70%, heavy highlight compression. Very warm, but this can be compensated for in the white balance by adding blue, and a little green.
