GH2 - remove 30 minute time limit http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10296/gh2-remove-30-minute-time-limit- Fri, 02 May 2014 02:03:20 +0000 Matthijs 10296@/talks/discussions Hi there. First of all thanks alot for all the work that so many people put into this website/forum. I'm only starting out 2 years or so, but so far this place has been very helpful.

For an upcoming wedding service I'm about to film I really like to get rid of the european 30 min. recording limit. My SD card is the 32GB extreme pro 45MB/s, of which I've read not particular good reviews on for using them for hacking the Gh2.

Is there a way I'd be able to shoot for at least 75 min. on this card (regarding both size and speed)?

Help would be very nice.

Matt

Battery Error msg is actually from camera impact! http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9798/battery-error-msg-is-actually-from-camera-impact Wed, 05 Mar 2014 19:40:39 +0000 tycho 9798@/talks/discussions I dropped my GH2 and got a "this battery cannot be used" message (on both good BLC-12 batteries), and then ordered a new battery to confirm it was not a power issue, so now I am in a quandry as to how to proceed; is it worth attempting repairing at this point, should I upgrade to the GH4 since I do as much photo's as video and it is the 'latest greatest', should I look at another camera like a Fuji, Sony, BMCC, etc. now?

I have a couple Nikon lenses (50mm f1.2, 70-300 f.4 and Metabones Speedbooster N m43) and an Oly Pen F 25mm with m43 adapter as well as the kit Panny lens, nothing I couldn't sell or transition with.

Portability, quality, and ease of use are primary considerations for photo HDR brackets for panoramic's mostly, shooting a video of an interview with a WWII vet w natural lighting, but nothing professionally, $1000 to $2000 range. If camera isn't worth fixing, is it worth anything?

Any recommendations?

It's the 1" version so full coverage on the BMPCC sensor, and good on the GH2, GH3, GX7. I've tested on all of those.

A great lower cost alternative to the Voigtlander 25mm lens and Panasonic 20mm 1.7.

I often have this issue which is that there is sunlight coming through a window (or two side windows), and spotlights on the stage. Currently using secondary correction for this but it is always difficult when the light mixes. As the session goes on, the sunlight moves from left to right.

Nikon AI(S) vs Canon FD for Video (GH2, GH1)? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/384/nikon-ais-vs-canon-fd-for-video-gh2-gh1 Thu, 14 Jul 2011 22:18:06 +0000 qwerty123 384@/talks/discussions
The pricing of these lenses seems to be getting closer by the day (FDs seemed to be cheaper a few years ago). But apart from the way the focus turns, is there much of a difference between these lens lines for video work?

Specifically, I'm interested in IMAGE QUALITY / DIFFERENCES.

I've heard some people say they like the contrast and rendition of Canon FDs (Hunter Richards, I think), and that Canons tend to be a little "warmer" in color than Nikons. Wouldn't white balancing cancel out that effect?

(I know that there is the L series of FD... but we can leave that issue to the side unless you think it is important.)]]>

5min video of some waterbirds found on Lake Wissota, Wisconsin. where I live. Most of these were on their way through headed towards their migratory summer grounds in Canada. Shot on a GH2 using mpgxsvcd's high quality no adverse effects 42 mb/sec hack, except for the very last clip which was shot using the LX7. As for the bald eagles at the end, while they are not actually waterbirds, they spend most of their time near the water, so that's why I included them.

Speed Booster or Native MFT Lenses? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10049/speed-booster-or-native-mft-lenses Thu, 03 Apr 2014 15:01:04 +0000 Kokav 10049@/talks/discussions I have a GH2. I primarily do video. I have three native MFT lenses: Panasonic 25mm f/1.4, 14mm f/2.5, and 14-140mm f/4.0-5.6. I have done a lot of searching about the Metabones Speed Booster but want some confirmation if I should go ahead and get one. I really like Nikkor AIS lenses and am wondering if it would be wise to invest in a set of AIS lenses (and possibly some others) and a Speed Booster rather than more native MFT glass.

The reasons I want the Speed Booster are pretty obvious: extra stop of light, wider viewing angle... But I want to know if it's really worth it. Will it actually make my lenses look better? I really want to know what the downsides are. Are there GH2/3 shooters who use the Speed Booster exclusively?

I'd really appreciate any pointers or discussion on this.

Les Folies d'Espagne: La Folia http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10070/les-folies-despagne-la-folia Sat, 05 Apr 2014 12:28:26 +0000 DrDave 10070@/talks/discussions The Folies d'Espagne is one of the oldest known dance forms. In this historical reconstruction, you will see the dance performed on instruments from the 17th century. On the right is the French baroque guitar, which was based on late renaissance instruments popular in Spain and Italy, as well the triple harp, which is a harp with three sets of strings (just for @Mark_the_Harp). On the left, an early form of the recorder, and a baroque violin using the smaller, lighter bow; the violin is played without a chinrest as well. The accompaniment is improvised by the musicians who are given a simple chord chart, similar to the way Jazz musicians improvise. The seven string instrument on the left is a viola da gamba, which existed side by side with the cello for hundreds of years before disappearing in the late 18th century. The viola da gamba has frets like a guitar, to facilitate the playing of chords, as well as microtones which were used in the baroque time.

Custom GH2 Patch question http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9897/custom-gh2-patch-question Mon, 17 Mar 2014 13:51:19 +0000 Brian_Siano 9897@/talks/discussions I've found that I generally use my GH2 in two situations: documentary and live-event coverage at 30 fps, and high-quality cinematography at 24 fps.

For the former, I want the camera to be able to shoot for long periods of time (spanning), and it's nice to get good quality, so I usually use the Cake 2.3 patch in these circumstances. Higher bitrates, reliable spanning.

For the high-quality stuff, I'll be using a high-bitrate hack (Intravenus 2 seems to be my best bet), and while spanning is desirable, it's not strictly necessary.

Is it possible to create a patch where these are combined? When I shoot at 30fps, it uses Cake 2.3 settings, and when I shoot at 24fps, it works like Intravenus 2?

Last Day to Help GH2 User Win Song Contest! http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/8606/last-day-to-help-gh2-user-win-song-contest Wed, 30 Oct 2013 15:36:57 +0000 thepalalias 8606@/talks/discussions UPDATE: The contest ends on November 8th, so please help by clicking the link, watching the music video and sharing it if you like it!

http://songwriter.revimage.com/channels/JoannaStClaire

If the music video wins for Joanna, it means a chance to work with Don Was (one of the most prolific and acclaimed producers out there) and money to help create additional music. She spent years on the album this video comes from and is an incredibly warm and talented person, so your help would be really appreciated by both of us.

Now here's some more text for everyone else about a project I worked on at various points from 2007 to last week. :)

Quick intro: I'm Per Lichtman, the guy that found the audio settings values now used in the majority of modern GH2 hacked settings, thanks to @Vitaliy_Kiselev making it possible to test and modify them. I've also participated in a lot settings comparison tests and talked way too much over the years. :)

Last year I directed a music video for a song I also worked heavily on the music side with. It was called "Listen to the Sound" by Joanna St. Claire and it finally got put up at http://songwriter.revimage.com/channels/JoannaStClaire in conjunction with a contest Joanna St. Claire recently entered. I wanted to help her out in the contest and share some of my experiences with the GH2 community at the same time.

The video is shot using a mixture of GH2 with the Driftwood Canis Majoris Night settings, as well as a RED Scarlet and Cooke lens courtesy of OnTheMarkMedia.net. There are also one or two shots with a Canon HV30.

The grading was done by Dimitrios Papagiannis ( @Bueller) in DaVinci Resolve using the Cineform codec as a digital intermediate. Ashley Nunn and Karla Usagi provided additional support carrying things as well as behind the scenes photography for one or two of the days. In other words, shooting often consisted of just me and the artist.

The shoot was done entirely using natural light, without reflectors or any other aids, on an extremely tight schedule and filmed almost entirely around sunset over the course of multiple days. The shots featuring water were done in a region where there is not normally a body of water: it was there for the first time in about a decade due to unusually high level of precipitation. The lake evaporated in a matter of weeks.

The lenses used on the GH2 were a Rokkor Minolta-mount 58mm f/1.4 and a Tokina 28mm Minolta-mount f/2.8. Various Tiffen contrast filters were used at certain point on the GH2. To the best of my memory, no filters were used on the Cooke lens for the Scarlet.

I will be posting more information (such as which shots are which) depending on what the interest level warrants.

The re-mastered album that the video goes with is "Stream HD Master", which we recently released in full-fidelity 96 KHz at 24-bit depth dynamic range. You can find it at https://joannastclaire.bandcamp.com/

It's been one of my favorite musical experiences so far. It also one of the ones were I've worn the most hats (recording engineer, mixing engineer, mastering engineer, creative consultant, album cover photographer, music video director, editor, etc.) that I can think of so far. :)
