Formatt Hitech ProStop IRND filer flare - what is acceptable? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12959/formatt-hitech-prostop-irnd-filer-flare-what-is-acceptable Sun, 10 May 2015 12:54:13 +0000 tadas 12959@/talks/discussions I've just received Formatt Hitech ProStop 4 stops IRND for my matte box and noticed heavy orange flares when sun directly hits the filter. Even though flares are normal to some extent, I would like to know your opinion if this example is still acceptable (currently I don't have many different filters to compare the results). Lens without filter has few flares with minimal color shift.

ND Filters and Lens/Filter Flares Clarification http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3453/nd-filters-and-lensfilter-flares-clarification Sat, 02 Jun 2012 13:56:24 +0000 B3Guy 3453@/talks/discussions Hey, all. I'm not entirely clear on how an ND filter changes the amount of flare in a lens system. (i.e. how much lens flare do you get with an ND in front of the lens versus with an ND in the camera body).

Also, how an ND changes flare from a flare filter (star, streak, etc.) i.e. would and ND in front of a flare filter reduce the amount of flare from the filter just the same as if the ND was behind the filter, or would the flare filter flare more with the ND behind it?

Perhaps some more experienced DPs could clear all this up for me, Thanks.

Always learning-

SLR Magic 12mm - MUST.HAVE.HOOD! http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3887/slr-magic-12mm-must.have.hood Fri, 13 Jul 2012 01:46:29 +0000 jdert 3887@/talks/discussions Desperately seeking advice for a hood option for this lens. Searches yield no results, other than I need a 58-77mm step up ring to do this without vignetting. I can't be alone in this issue! I am constantly battling flares and lighting artifacts whenever the sun hits it. This is my glidecam lens and its becoming very problematic to shoot with. For instance, my T2i glidecam setup had a 17-50mm and has zero issues with flares. Is this more than a hood issue, could it be a lens coating issue?

Mega Flare: Album Promo (Remember your first shoot?) http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3704/mega-flare-album-promo-remember-your-first-shoot Wed, 27 Jun 2012 09:25:32 +0000 leejb4 3704@/talks/discussions Shooting this video has made me realize three things.

  1. I need to invest in new lenses. I shot this entirely with the 14-42mm Lumix and it was way to dark for f=3.5... I had so much trouble grading because although the setting held up well with the darkness, it was still REALLY dark. I had ISO cranked up to 1250+ most of the time.

  2. Lighting is the most important part of filming. All of this was shot in the rain during a storm that we did not expect would roll in (which definitely gave a cool shot at the end). This had a big impact on the quality of the video.

  3. Practice! Every time I shoot something, I learn something new about the limitations of the camera, what shots look good and which ones don't, how to operate the camera in a different way, which lighting conditions work and which don't, different editing tricks and what not. So I guess I learned that even though this is all a hobby for me, it is just like any other sport or hobby in the fact that you have to practice and develop your abilities in order to create a final product that is satisfactory for you work with and for others to watch.

This is my first "Real" work and there are two versions of the video. The version I felt was most cinematic (minimal grading) and this version.

I sat with the artist and was grading and he kept asking for more "Color" to the shots and once I over saturated and cranked up the color correction tools he was extremely happy while I was left thinking..."This looks horrible." But...I guess I am supposed to create what he likes since it is technically "His" video.

Apologize for the long message, I just thought it would be nice to share my beginner experience with others so they can possibly learn something or for other to just reminisce about what it was like when they shot their very first video. Constructive criticism is greatly appreciated.

Shooting this video has finally made me realize two things.

  1. I need to invest in new lenses. I shot this entirely with the 14-42mm Lumix and it was way to dark for f=3.5...

  2. Lighting is the most important part of filming. All of this was shot in the rain during a storm that we did not expect would roll in (definitely gave a cool shot at the end) and this had a big impact on the quality of the video.

Bellows Hoods are Back in Style - 90 minute conversion project http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3448/bellows-hoods-are-back-in-style-90-minute-conversion-project Sat, 02 Jun 2012 04:13:16 +0000 Roberto 3448@/talks/discussions Spurred on by Black Magic Design having presented their new camera sporting bellows, I've finally got around to modifying my Hasselblad bellows mattebox into a hood. Since I used the rear filter slot as a mount, it no longer qualifies as a matte box - but the original is left totally intact and conversion is reversible.

Shown extended to FOV of Panasonic 14mm pancake; will fast-adjust to any focal length.

Next, upper French flag and front letterbox matte. I'm hoping it will be seriously dark in there!

My bellows cost $50. See similar on eBay

[Edit 3 June: added much smaller file-size pics, PNGs too big, sorry!]
