FS: 3x3 Matte Box Package and Filters (Neutral Density, Circular Polarizer, ND Grad) http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12798/fs-3x3-matte-box-package-and-filters-neutral-density-circular-polarizer-nd-grad Mon, 13 Apr 2015 17:10:46 +0000 QuickHitRecord 12798@/talks/discussions Several new cameras were announced today, and most of which will need a filter system.

As luck would have it, I am selling mine:

image image image image

I've had great results with this set on Full Frame, S35, and Micro Four Thirds cameras.

Package includes:

1 x Cavision 3x3 Matte Box Package - Includes side and top flags, and "nuns knickers".

4 x Cavision 58mm Conical Step-up Ring with 85mm Outside Diameter - Allows lenses with a 58mm filter thread to engage directly with the matte box. The cone design helps to prevent vignetting. If you have lenses with a smaller filter thread, you can use step up rings to attach these.

1 x Cavision 85mm to 72mm Threaded Metal Deep Offset Step-Up Adapter Ring - For wide angle lenses with filter threads of 72mm (can be adapted with step rings). This gets the front element of the lens as close as possible to the filter to prevent vignetting. I've used it successfully with an 18mm lens on my 5D3 without vignetting.

6 x Cavision MBH3X3M 3x3 Metal Filter Tray - Much sturdier then the plastic filter trays that come with the matte box.

1 x Cavision MBH3X4M 3x4 Metal Filter Tray - For using ND grad filters.

1 x LockCircle Slider Base with Support Mount (Y) - This allows the matte box to be mounted to rods, while allowing them to slide back and forth for lenses that extend when zooming or focusing.

1 x Schneider 4 x 4" Five Slot Filter Pouch - Fits four filter trays nicely for fast deployment.

Filters:

1 x Schneider Neutral Density (ND) 0.3 Filter (3 x 3")

1 x Schneider Neutral Density (ND) 0.6 Filter (3 x 3")

1 x Schneider Neutral Density (ND) 0.9 Filter (3 x 3")

1 x Schneider Neutral Density (ND) 1.2 Filter (3 x 3")

1 x Schneider Circular True-Polarizing Filter (3 x 3")

1 x Tiffen Soft Edge Graduated 0.6 ND Filter (3 x 3")

Everything has been lightly used and is in great condition. I'd consider selling the filters separately as a set, but I'm not looking to break up the set any further than that at this point.

Purchased new, this set would be around $1600. I'm offering it up for $1000, with Paypal charges on me and shipped anywhere in the Continental United States.

Let me know if you have any questions.

General Questions on Filters for DLSM Video http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4333/general-questions-on-filters-for-dlsm-video Wed, 22 Aug 2012 17:34:40 +0000 Aria 4333@/talks/discussions Being a Newbie I've been somewhat confused about selecting and the proper use of Filters in particular for Video on a DSLM like the GH1/2.

  1. If I use a Polarizer does that negate the need for a UV Filter?
  2. If I use a Variable ND does that negate the need for a Polarizer?
  3. Is there a negative effect from using several different types of filters let say a UV, Polarizer and Vari ND all at once or is there a net positive effect from using all 3?
  4. What is the best pattern to organize the filters on the lens if using a variety of filter types. ie. Vari ND 1st, then Polarizer, then UV?
  5. Is it best to buy the best SET of filters from the same brand or the best individual filters from different brands.
  6. Is there some kind of rating system for Filters that can be used to compare their effectiveness? ie effect on sharpness, color etc. How would someone actually choose one filter from another to find the best one if there is no rating system? Is there a really reliable resource on the Web?

Sorry if there is some thread that covers this, but I haven't come across any that concisely address this topic.

"Dream" Filter? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12667/dream-filter Wed, 25 Mar 2015 11:24:28 +0000 Psyco 12667@/talks/discussions Hi,

I'm trying to figure out how to get a "dreamy" look for some shoots of my project. I want the image to be a bit softer (not extremly soft) and all highlights should have some halo/glow effect. The best professional filters I have found are the Tiffen Pro Mist (not Black Pro Mist), but they are expensive (and hardly sold used on ebay).

  1. Does someone want to sell used Tiffen Pro Mist 1/2 or 1 filters (4x4 or 77/82mm)?

  2. How about the stocking + clear filter trick? Can anybody with experience chime in please.

As I know exactly what I want in every shot, there is no point in doing it in post, as digital effects are not on the same level as real in camera effects.

Variable ND and GH4 (and other cameras). http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11492/variable-nd-and-gh4-and-other-cameras.- Sun, 05 Oct 2014 13:09:11 +0000 nobbystylus 11492@/talks/discussions I've been noticing that I'm getting results I'm not happy with from using my Variable ND (Tiffin) with my GH4 while shooting people - particularly faces. Peoples faces looked 'painterly' almost lacking in real tones, and somewhat 'duotone' in appearance. I've recently switched to a set of (Hoya) ND Filters for shooting people and I'm suddenly seeing a radical improvement in how faces and skin tones are rendered. The GH4 is amazingly beautiful an image, and using straight NDs I'm finding it looks ridiculously good - almost too 'real', whereas before with Variable ND it was looking somewhat 'painterly'.

I'm guessing this has something to do with the polarising effects of Variable ND filters and the effect that has on highlights, reflective surfaces etc.

Any thoughts on this? Are there any Variable ND filters out there which minimise the 'polarising' effect as they're certainly more convenient, but right now I just can't trust the look i'm getting from them and straight NDs give me a much more 'realistic' image (which I can apply looks to in post to take the edge off).

Saving on ND filters http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5689/saving-on-nd-filters Mon, 07 Jan 2013 05:58:50 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 5689@/talks/discussions Let's take Tiffen IR ND

82mm filter cost will be $171
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=Tiffen+IRND+82mm&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma

Smaller 72-77mm filters are even cheaper (about $80-100)

Same filter in 4"x4" form factor will be $260 ($90 more than 82mm round filter)
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=Tiffen+IRND+4x4&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma

If you get 82mm round filter to 4x4" converter

It'll just add $26 and for almost all lenses, even wide, 82mm is more than enough.

Here is small video on importance of IR ND (just remember that it uses extreme 128 ND filter).

B+W Special Effects Cine Filters x3 Retro [multi-image] 62mm http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6839/b-w-special-effects-cine-filters-x3-retro-multi-image-62mm- Mon, 29 Apr 2013 10:34:35 +0000 bheath 6839@/talks/discussions I'm selling these weird and ?wonderful? multi-image filters.

I had them with my Braun Super 8 camera, and now they are collecting dust.

There are three filters in the set:

  1. [A+ Condition] Multi-Image 3x Prism Consists of high quality glass with three equally sized prism surfaces that meet in the center. It produces three identical images whose positioning can be changed by turning the rotating mount.

  2. [Water Damaged!] geletin core, but still usable]3x Color Prism The 3x Color Prism attachment produces the same effect as the 3x Prism Parallel, but adds a gradual, soft blending of colors. The three parallel images can be positioned by rotation.

  3. [A+ Condition] Multi-Image 5x Prism This prism contains a square prism in the center of the attachment and four trapezoidshaped prisms in the outer area. It produces one central image surrounded by four identical images which may be moved around the square by rotation.

Give your movies an authentic groovy look with these high quality German filters!

BTW: I'm also wanting to sell my 14-140mm Lumix. Hardly ever use it - $350.00 + shipping + $10.00 donation to this site.

$60.00 takes all three filters. Shipping + $5.00 donation to this site will be extra.

Thanks!

PS: I don't have all the pictures here on the page, but I could send them to you if you wish:)

What does the My colour mode do when filming? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6496/what-does-the-my-colour-mode-do-when-filming Mon, 25 Mar 2013 08:23:02 +0000 KluddKalle 6496@/talks/discussions Hi!

I've searched for answers but came up with nothing, if there is an answer please point me in the right direction and close this thread. Forgive me if I'm posting this in the wrong category.

I'm using the GF2 (hacked) for filming with old vintage lenses. I mainly use a Canon FD 50 mm 1,4 and a Canon FD 28 mm f2,8. When I try to shoot wide open the image gets all blown out (of course) and a ND-filter would help me with that. But when I shoot in any of the My colour modes the image is fine.

So what does the My colour mode (except the obvious effects) do that I can't do in manual mode? I know there's no manual controls when recording video so does it really matter what mode I shoot in? I'm thinking that the custom My colour mode (without changing any settings to the colour) is cheaper than a variable ND-filter, if the mode doesn't do something wierd with my video...

Custom LED Filter http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6490/custom-led-filter Sun, 24 Mar 2013 19:53:38 +0000 kin869 6490@/talks/discussions I recently purchased the Amaran 160 LED and so far it's working great. The only complaint I have is the color output. This particular LED has a strong magenta tint that's very apparent when I use it as a fill light in daylight situations. During my search to find an affordable solution, I stumbled across this. Basically, the guy made his own filters by printing colors onto transparencies.

I know it's not too expensive to buy a pack of these filters, but with this method, I can print out any filter I want and cut out whatever size I need from it. Here's a short video I put together to show how some of these custom filters work.

Hope this is helpful to someone!

Diffusion Filters (Screw-in) http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2388/diffusion-filters-screw-in Fri, 24 Feb 2012 08:38:06 +0000 eiji 2388@/talks/discussions For the past few days I've been doing some research about Diffusion Filters having in mind to reduce the edge sharpening of the GH2 for the following reasons:

I've read many forum threads discussing such filters from these following two brands:

and I've come down to these four filters which seem to be the most interesting in order to achieve the 'look' I'm after:

Now, the thing is that each one of these filters comes in difference strengths (usually from 1/8 to 2) and I couldn't find any good video example showing the comparison between those filters. I just found some still examples here http://www.thelondonfiltercompany.com/camera_filters.php

I know that the best thing would be to rent these filters for a day or two and see for myself but, unfortunately, there's no rental houses near from where I live…

So, does anyone here have hands-on experience with these filters? Or even better, does anyone have in his possession one or more of these filters and would be willing to do some kind of comparison test?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks^^

Ps: I forgot to mention that I'm talking about using a diffusion filter with a fast prime (like the nokton 25mm 0.95 or nokton 50mm 1.1) and not a Panasonic lens with electrical connectivity with the camera body

Filters for video http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5368/filters-for-video Mon, 03 Dec 2012 12:50:33 +0000 Supaduparafael 5368@/talks/discussions Hi guys,

I'm a newbie (those dreaded words!)

I've recently got a GH2 and mainly use it for filming. I'm now looking to get some filters for it (polarising and variable ND) purely for video.

Initially I thought I'd just buy screw in filters, namely the digital ones from Hoya but it quickly dawned on me that that would be an expensive option as it would mean individual filters for each lens due to the different thread sizes on each of them, also I have one which doesn't take filters ( the Panasonic 7-14mm wide zoom).

I then thought that a good option would be slot in filters such as the Cookin variety, as a cheaper option to the screw in type. Also with the slot in filters I would be able to filter the Panasonic 7-14mm? However these filters I understand are made of resin (plastic) so would I be right in thinking that they would not be ideal for filming, not as good as glass screw in filters?

I'm confused to say the least!

I'm contemplating just buying uv filters for all lenses (for protection) and getting a polariser and variable nd one screw in just for my main lens ( the panasonic 14-140mm).

I'm just imagining myself on a sunny day and wanting to reach for 7-14mm panasonic but then thinking "Gee wizz Batman, I can't polarise or use an nd on this" colours could turn out washed out due to reflections, I guess the nd issue could be resolved by stopping down the aperture as I wouldn't get a shallow depth of field on this lens anyhow :-P

I understand a lens as wide as this just isnt possible to have a thread (vignetting issues, protruding lens,) so do I guess the best thing i can do is just stop down on sunny days but no solution for the polarisation?

Thanks

Rafael

Filter for night-shoots to prevent bright lights http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1401/filter-for-night-shoots-to-prevent-bright-lights Wed, 09 Nov 2011 17:26:36 +0000 kronstadt 1401@/talks/discussions
(long time reader, first time joiner/poster)

So I came back from London with 4 hours worth of lens-test footage - mostly night-shoots. This was my first shoot with my Gh1 re-born as a Gh13 after I applied the LPowell 100mbps hack.

First thing that is immediately annoying about my footage as well as so many Gh1/13 night-time footages that you see on Vimeo and YouTube, is just how BRIGHT and glaring the lights look from passing cars' front-lights, street lights etc... That's just not how it looks like in films. So I'm guessing they probably use some kind of filters. The question is, which filters work best for night time shoots to keep those occasional light from passing cars etc from spoiling the rest of the picture?

Sorry for the newbie-ness. I'm only beginning to get into matte-boxes etc. I got myself a tiny compact Cromatek ProShade, so that it does not attract too much attention and be compact and mobile at the same time.]]>
