We had 48 hours from 12 noon on Saturday, until Monday noon today, to write, shoot, edit and deliver a film for the Sci-Fi London Film Festival (http://www.sci-fi-london.com/48-hour-film-challenge). You're given a title, line of dialog and prop to do something with.

It's far from perfect, and the big lesson I learned, was don't shoot green screen for your first time and expect to complete in 48 hours! I'm incredibly proud of our team pulling something like this together in so little time though.

Here's our entry:

Supplied Brief: Title: Unwritten Line: A perfectly ordinary person is rare in our society Prop: I (Heart) Badge: We see a character pin a badge with “I (The heart symbol) and any word” on to another character or an object - not just put on desk etc, must be ‘pinned’.

Camera: GH2, Sedna AQ1 (SanDisk 95B 64GB), Smooth -2, -2, -2, -2. Lenses: Panasonic 24/2.5 plus Panasonic LA7200, Canon FD 35/2, FD 85/2 plus Bolex Anamorphot 32/16/1.5 Filters: Tiffen Pro-Mist 1/4 (for 24/2.5), Formatt ND 0.3, 0.6, 0.9.

Post: Premiere Pro, After Effects, ColorGHear.

Eight Minutes of Jurassic Park Behind the Scenes Footage http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2867/eight-minutes-of-jurassic-park-behind-the-scenes-footage Sat, 14 Apr 2012 19:41:38 +0000 Philldaagony 2867@/talks/discussions

I think most striking thing to me is how involved Spielberg is in camera operation! I wonder if he still does most of the camera work on his more recent films. I can't see why not. I guess the man just loves film making that much.

Anyone know what other directors are famously hands-on versus video-village dwellers?

Maintaining best quality while transferring HD to SD http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2820/maintaining-best-quality-while-transferring-hd-to-sd Mon, 09 Apr 2012 13:45:23 +0000 bostonmike 2820@/talks/discussions I have a question maybe some of you more seasoned people can help me with. A friend asked me to enter one of those 48 hour film contests with him. The problem is I typically shoot in 1080p 24fps..in cinema mode on my GH2. The rules for submissions are as follows:

... a self-contained SD Quicktime file with no proprietary codecs on either: - data DVD - USB flash drive miniDV playable DVD

I'm editing and rendering on Vegas Home Studio HD 11.0. I'm wondering if I should be changing the settings on the camera BEFORE even filming, to easier convert to SD..There are also so many output options on Sony Vegas that I'm at a loss on what the best transfer would be to maintain the best quality in standard definition. Wondering if a USB flash drive would maintain better quality than a playable DVD?...it seems like rather than forcing filmmakers to downgrade their finished product, the contest staff should be upgrading their equipment to handle HD...these are only 4-7 minute videos after all. The finished videos will be screened in a full size theater..something tells me they are going to look not so good.

Thanks for the help.

First, look at this resource - http://thetwopointeight.tumblr.com/
It is blog describing lighting (mostly portraits like).

Second. You can search Amazon for lighting books. I need some time to find, but I am sure that I read some books describing lighting of famous film scenes .]]>

Any good references on GH2 Film Modes? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2297/any-good-references-on-gh2-film-modes Thu, 16 Feb 2012 12:22:42 +0000 Brian_Siano 2297@/talks/discussions Is there a good technical summary of the GH2's various film modes? The camera offers good short descriptions, and the online comparison-videos are nice, but I'd like to see something more technical: for example, a graph of how the dynamic ranges of Cinema and Smooth compare. (And if possible, how adjusting things like contrast, saturation, etc., affect these.) Does such a thing exist on the Web?

Amelie short - Competition finalist - shot on 600D http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2167/amelie-short-competition-finalist-shot-on-600d Wed, 01 Feb 2012 16:43:18 +0000 Cheekorobbins 2167@/talks/discussions My New Years resolution was to find a competition to enter and get something filmed, I decided on the Jameson Empire - Done in 60 Seconds competition and have been selected as a finalist!

Wanted to share the video and, if you like it, please vote for me on the link below.

Filmed on my Canon 600D(1920x1080 @ 24fps) over two days. I only decided to enter the competition at the start of January and the deadline was the 20th so I didn't have as much time as I would've liked, fitting it around my day job(animator/3D generalist). Decided to spend 2 weeks planning and refining the idea and a week to put together an animatic and then assemble everything from there.

Location is in my flat, actress is my wife(who is an actress, handy!), I've still got a lot to learn about lighting so I'm not entirely happy with the look. Lamp lighting for the sofa and laptop close up shots and we have no plug sockets downstairs so just had to suffer the ceiling halogens :(

Used a bare bulb for the close up shots of the hands which I'm happier with(the typing one worked best I felt)

I used the Tamron 17-50 2.8 for all of it, I'm kicking myself for not using the 50mm 1.8(what was I thinking!?) mainly on a tripod and a shoulder rig for the final shot outside the door.

Edited in Premiere and graded in After Effects using Colorista II, once again I was short on time but was able to get a general warm hue on the live action shots and a green hue on the computer screens in fitting with the Amelie movie and the colour palettes used for her appartment and the outside world. Ended up being so tight on the deadline I didn't get to do a noise reduction and sharpening pass unfortunately.

I was going to just do the computer shots in after effects and apply a filter to get the screen look but after some tests it actually worked best just filming the monitor so I stuck with that, most of it is just me manipulating layers in photoshop in realtime(in the splitscreen email shot the cursor that appears is the move one if you look closely, couldn't find a workaround for that :) )

If there are any lighting/gaffers on here living in the London area that are looking for projects to get involved in I'd love to hear from you, it's definitely a weakness.

Anyway, hope you enjoy it. If you voted, thanks very much!

Comments and feedback welcome.

Anyone know what happened to Rejouer? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2081/anyone-know-what-happened-to-rejouer Sat, 21 Jan 2012 02:53:17 +0000 Mr_Moore 2081@/talks/discussions Rejouer was touted as being the first full-length feature film shot entirely on a GH1. I think the production took place in 2009 and the movie was supposed to be released in 2011.

The promo trailer and some behind the scenes footage looked promising.

Anyone know what happened to it?

I've been looking for some great Led lights to be able to light a basis set, indoor and outdoor in the field.
This is what I found so far, the price for the complete set is 650 USD...To much? Or is it a great find?

Recommendations and other finds are welcome!

Trailer is not so good really:
