Why Canon FD? You can find many great lenses for this mount.
And thanks to the fact that this mount is completely abandoned, they can be obtained for cheaper price, normally.

I'll start from the most frequently mentioned lens - Canon FD 40mm F1.4. It had many versions.
I really do not know all the differencies, but they are not very important as far as I am aware.

Demo: De-clicking Canon FD lens to get stepless aperture http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2410/demo-de-clicking-canon-fd-lens-to-get-stepless-aperture Sun, 26 Feb 2012 13:21:21 +0000 ticoneva 2410@/talks/discussions I would like to share my experience de-clicking FD lenses.

Dedicated video lenses usually feature stepless aperture to allow for smooth adjustment of exposure. Most still photography lenses, in contrast, feature stepped aperture adjustment. This article demonstrates how to "de-click" Canon FD lenses to get stepless aperture.

Before you continue, note that

  1. De-clicking is easy. All you need to do is to unscrew the rear and take out one or two things.
  2. The process will not introduce dust into your lens---the optical assembly is sealed in one piece inside the lens.
  3. There is a "cheat" that gives you continuous aperture adjustment without the hassle of opening up the lens. All you need to do is set your lens to the smallest aperture, then turn the ring on the FD adapter. The downside of this cheat is you do not have any indication of which f-stop you are at.

With that in mind, if you still believe de-clicking is useful---and I personally do find that being the case---here is a quick demonstration on how to do so.

1. Take apart the lens from the rear and remove parts that cause un-smooth movement

taken apart
You need to remove the two parts indicated by the blue arrows if you want the aperture ring to rotate smoothly. If you can stand the un-smoothness, however, you can keep the parts on---with the parts on, step 2 alone is actually sufficient to give you stepless aperture.

2. Remove the piston

piston
On lens such as the the 28mm---in which you lock by rotating the whole lens---the piston underneath the aperture ring provides the click. Remove the piston de-clicks the lens. If you have kept the two parts on in the first step, you can now re-assemble the lens.

If instead your FD lens locks with a rotating metal ring, you will need to remove the two ball bearings inside the aperture ring.

3. Removing the spring holding the aperture selector

remove spring
At this point if you re-assemble the lens without the jiggering parts, you will notice that the aperture bounces back when you try to set a small aperture. This is due to the spring mechanism used in FD lens' aperture control: the aperture ring is actually only capable of driving the aperture in one direction; reverse movement is driven by the spring holding the aperture selector. Removing the spring solves this issue.

4. Linking the aperture ring to the aperture diaphragm

linking
Because the aperture ring is designed to only drive the aperture in one direction, you need to manually link the aperture ring to the diaphragm. Here I used a short polyester thread, lopping around the coupling pin on the diaphragm and held underneath the link on the aperture ring. Make sure the aperture size match up with the f-stop indicated on the aperture ring.

If your FD lens locks with a rotating metal ring, you will be lopping around the coupling fork instead:

link to driver

5. Re-assemble the lens. It's done!

16 different lenses - same target. Which look do you prefer? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2129/16-different-lenses-same-target.-which-look-do-you-prefer Sat, 28 Jan 2012 09:56:25 +0000 oscillian 2129@/talks/discussions I didn't find a topic that suited my little test, so here we go: 16 lenses shooting the same backlit subject, moving the camera to different spot to match field of view, thereby creating different spacial compression. Camera set to aperture priority. All lenses were wide open, except for the Hexanon 40 at 1.8 and 2.8 (beautiful pancake lens). Check for bokeh, colour, flaring and sharpness (yes, the 12mm 1.6 is in focus). I was surprised the Canon nFD 35 2.0 flared so much compared to the 50s. Anyone has had the same behaviour?

Lens Turbo II (FD to M43) + FD 50mm 1.4 - cant mount lense so aperture works http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16548/lens-turbo-ii-fd-to-m43-fd-50mm-1.4-cant-mount-lense-so-aperture-works Mon, 06 Mar 2017 02:40:43 +0000 baschmir 16548@/talks/discussions Hi dear forum,

I just received my Lens Turbo II and tried to mount my FD 50mm 1.4 but I cant make the aperture work. I bring the red dot of the lens to the yellow dot of the adapter and twist it towards the red dot (so red dot of adapter and lens match up). While I do that i can feel that the metal screw of the adapter is moving the aperture hock (dont know how that is called), but when the red dots are lined up so the entire lens should fit into the adapter to move again in the other direction its not possible because where the screw is placed the lens pops out a bit and is not fitting into the adapter. if I lift the lens a bit and put it back it fits but the metal aperture hock is not in place anymore and when i screw the lens on the aperture ring is not functioning. i have looked for solutions online, found one guy that said for him it worked to make the screw of the adapter bigger with some rubber because in his case the screw was not lined up with the aperture hook of the lens (thats not the same in my case). tired this as well, funnily one time i somehow manage to get the lens on the adapter with the aperture working but after that always the same (it pops out a bit so i cant mount the lens on the adapter). I made a video, hope you can see the problem there

please help!

28-200mm F3.5-5.3 Vivitar Macro Focusing Issue http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4939/-28-200mm-f3.5-5.3-vivitar-macro-focusing-issue Fri, 19 Oct 2012 17:01:39 +0000 daisuke 4939@/talks/discussions @sammy @LaserGuidedTaco

A few of us have purchased this lens from the 'hidden gems among lenses' thread recommendation. I read the reviews of having focusing problems. It seems that the macro function is stuck on. I just received mine today, and my lens cannot focus as well. Any insight on this subject or lens would be helpful. It is the canon fd mount version.

  1. I am using a fotga adapter, and I've also tried the fotodiox adapter for fd mounts.

  2. To use the macro function you must slide it to 200mm and turn to the left. There doesn't seem to be any locking or engaging. You must then turn it all the way to the right to slide back to anything under 200mm. When back to anything lower, it will still focus but everything is blurry.

I can take pictures if anyone needs more information. Looking to solve this issue so we can all use the lens. Thanks!

I need your help. I want to build a lens set from affordable but superb vintage lenses for cinematography. These 3 brands would be adapted via an passive adapter onto my Samsung NX1.

Focal lengths I am generally interested in: 24 or 28mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm

I'll need some experts opinion on which brand to go for. I don't know wether to go for Contax Yashica, Canon FD or Minolta vintage lenses so hit me up with your knowledge and recommendation. It is much appreciated.

NEX-7 vs GH2 comparison http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5342/nex-7-vs-gh2-comparison Sat, 01 Dec 2012 10:38:22 +0000 tetakpatak 5342@/talks/discussions Originally, when I bought the NEX-7 I had entirely still photography in my mind. Its mighty APS-C sensor (24MP) is capable of creating fantastic photos. Considering its video recording capability, I haven't expected anything remarkable. Although, it is quite interesting- I've made this test footage last week and compared it with the GH2, which is (especially here on the P-V site) very well-known to most of the visitors:

Test footage details:
The choice of lenses was done very carefully. Considering different crops of the APS-C and micro-four-thirds sensors (1,5x vs 1,86x recpectivelly) I've used the lenses that have similar view angle, same speed and extremely similar optical performance. All lenses had proper lens hood at all times. The aperture was most of the time stopped down for one step (day at f/4.0, night at f/2.8) except in very dark scenes, where both Nikkors had fully open diaphragm. In the NEX-7 there is no possibility of shooting in 24fps mode so I set it to 25fps and adjusted the GH2 to HBR and 25fps.

NEX-7 with stock firmware (PAL) // GH2 with the patch Cake 2.3 by @balazer
AVCHD 25fps 1080 // AVCHD HBR 25fps 1080
The GH2 camera files were quite exactly double-sized compared to the NEX-7

Daylight footage settings:
Lens: Canon FD 35/2.8 // FD 24/2.8
Lens aperture: (always) 4.0, no filters
Crop: 1.5x35=52,5mm equivalent // 1.86x24=44,6mm equivalent
ISO: 200 // 200 (always)
AWB // AWB
EV 0.0 // 0.0
Metering: multi // frame+center
Colors progr.: standard // standard
In-camera setting: default // default (0,0,0,0)
Mode: aperture priority (both)

Night footage settings:
Lens: Nikkor 35/2.0 Ai // Nikkor 28/2.0 Ai
Crop: 1.5x35=52,5mm equivalent // 1.86x28=52,1mm equivalent
Lens aperture: 2.0-2.8
ISO: 1600-1600
AWB // AWB (one take manually set to 2500K both)
EV: at first 0.0 both, later -0.3 / +0.7
Metering: multi // field+center
Colors progr.: standard // standard
In-camera setting: default-default (0,0,0,0)
Mode: manual (both)

Comments and bit of my subjective impressions:

Exposure: by default settings (EV 0.0), NEX-7 tends to overexpose EV+2/3, GH2 to underexpose EV-2/3
Colors: NEX-7 tends to reddish, GH2 to greenish colors. The NEX-7 has possibility of adjusting the color tones for every color mode, also for AWB.
White balance: NEX-7 is capable of getting much cooler AWB, extremely weird situation occurs at 2m45" when the WB in both cameras was set manually to 2500K
Moiré: two tipical situations by 1m40" but generally, the NEX-7 has obviously less moiré
ISO: NEX-7 has feature of changing the ISO sensitivity during the recording, the GH3 offers this but GH2 and GH1 not. In the daylight ISO was set manually to 200, in the night to 1600 in both cameras.
Sharpness: I was expecting clear winner GH2 and much worse NEX-7. Yet, the result is very similar. Please mind that in one scene I forgot to focus the lens (by 2m35") mounted to the NEX-7
Contrasts: in all test situations the NEX-7 shows more details in the shadows, but it would need bit more testing because of the camera's propensity to overexpose what I didn't notice at first.

The NEX-7 is even smaller than GH1 or GH2 and it has bigger sensor.... I like its concept, very minimalistic- pure idea of the "mirrorlessity". Its big advantage is the still photography, such a comparison wouldn't make much sence because it simply blows off not only the GH2 but even most of the DSLRs with APS-C sensor.... it's newer generation. The big drawback of the NEX-7 considering its video functionality is its sensor overheating. On the room temperature, some 20min are maximum one can expect, regardless if the display is lifted or left in its position. I am kind of very pleased to see that the NEX-7 renders the shadows very smooth and in cinematic spirit, with lots of details. It is a feature that we are struggling to get with our GHx cameras. This cinematic image gets more obvious by using a bit less sharp lenses than Canon FD or Nikkor that I used in this test.

Best hack for filming live music http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5446/best-hack-for-filming-live-music Mon, 10 Dec 2012 19:00:04 +0000 athirdeye 5446@/talks/discussions I recently filmed a performance in a small venue where I had no control over the lights. I used the most recent (sharp) drewnet hack with a 50mm canon FD lens on 720p. I noticed in post that the lights caused my video to come out choppy. Meaning each time the lights changed it would split the video in 3 horizontal bars. Still great quality but wtf.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a hack that would work best in a live music setting with constant changing lights and what not?

Vivitar vs Canon FD lenses http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4968/vivitar-vs-canon-fd-lenses Tue, 23 Oct 2012 07:57:35 +0000 phazedreality818 4968@/talks/discussions hello all. i am very new to photography and videography. i have purchased a gh2 about 2 months ago and love it. my dad had some old school canon fd lenses laying around from when he was in the military in the early 80s. i bought the ciecio7 adapter and it works wonderfully. i love how the images are detailed, yet soft, and how the bokeh is incredibly nice.

i have a 50mm f1.8 and a 135mm 3.5

i am looking to buy a wider angle lens but i am caught between canon lenses and vivitar lenses for the fd mount. i am looking to get a fast (f2.0 or lower) 24 or 28mm lens, and the vivitar ones are much much much more affordable than their canon counterpart.

my question is this. how much of a difference is there between the canon fd and vivitar fd lenses? is the difference in price worth it to go for the canon? how does the vivitar lens hold up on its own?

GH2 holding its ground with Epic http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4999/gh2-holding-its-ground-with-epic Fri, 26 Oct 2012 11:49:04 +0000 ronmen 4999@/talks/discussions Hey guys, just thought you'd like to see some spots we shot on a Red Epic with a $40,000 Arri Alura 15.5 - 45mm lens and a GH2 with the Sanity 5 patch and a $100 Canon 85mm FD SSC prime lens. These are fairly low res files for web delivery but the high res footage looked great too. Here are the four spots:

The Epic was used for the wide and medium shots, the GH2 was used for the CU cutaways on the face and hands. I think the footage cuts very well. 'Just goes to show that you don't need to spend $100K on a camera package to get very nice results.

Extreme wide resolution video (3840x1080@24p) http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4850/extreme-wide-resolution-video-3840x108024p Tue, 09 Oct 2012 16:16:12 +0000 sakattaq76 4850@/talks/discussions Using 2 cameras (GH1-GH2) side by side making this extreme wide resolution video (3840x1080@24p). Didn't have time for color correction. So this is just a test! Watch original quality view setting although youtube compression won't let you enjoy it on full resolution. If you want to watch this clip on full scale, you will need 2 monitors Full HD on landscape mode. For some of you would seem ridiculous but I would like to know if someone has tried this before. The test itself is very poor executed and poor equipment, I just did it in 5 minutes. Didn't have the same lenses or the same cameras. Is there a program like making photo panoramas but for videos as well? Will this be as good as anamorphic solution wide images? Let me know about your thoughts. Cheers!!!
