I'm collecting references of video graphical representation of data, charts, etc. Looking for some input from you people here about what can be a good way or some place were you have seen it done good in any way.

P.S. I'm really focusing on the graphical representation thing alone, apart from the narrative or the facts illustration in broadcast news thing, but discussion of it would also be welcome.

Thanks!!

Difference between Magix Vegas Pro and Video Pro http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/21200/difference-between-magix-vegas-pro-and-video-pro Wed, 26 Dec 2018 08:02:52 +0000 RoadsidePicnic 21200@/talks/discussions Recently got involved in deploying a very small institutional communication team. The hardware available to video editing is mostly a couple of low profile sandy bridge i7 and common RAM witch would be added 1050ti. Target source is GH5 (not defined).

Searching for some editors with FX suite that reported to run OK on these specs, decided to contact Magix about their Vegas Pro and Video Pro software.

The reply came:

  • Video Pro is a semi-professional software to advanced videographers
  • Vegas Pro is a professional software to production companies

So, ok it does give the idea of how the company place the two, but would the people here on the forum know about the effective difference of the software? What are the main things that set them apart in terms of function and integration?

I am a complete novice, so please bear over with me if my video vocabulary is a bit limited.
I consider myself a still photographer and thats why I purchased the GF1 in the first place. For some years now, I have enjoyed using a video capable P&S camera for small (poor quality) video sequences and put them together in Windows Movie Maker but it doesn't really work with the GF1 video files. I enjoy the very high quality I achieve with the hack and would like to preserve it when editing the video

So what is an inexpensive, easy to use application which can run on a low end low spec laptop (1.5 years old 3mb RAM 2.1GHz MS Vista with some insignificant spec'ed on board graphics chip)?
These are my requirements:

* Price below USD 100
* Must be able to run on a low spec labtop (I don't intend to upgrade for this purpose and I am willing to be patient when working)
* I use LPowel's reliable patch and I am shooting MJPEG only
* User friendly: I dont want to learn more than absolutely neccessary
* I usually shoot small sequences of around 20-60 seconds and need to trim them and combine the clips into small videos of max 5 min.
* I need fade transitions between clips
* I need some simple sound control as I don't pay much attention to sound when I record video (for example I need to be able to use some ambient sound from one clip to replace the sound of another).
* Some text functionality (placing some explanatory text during the video).

With possible exception of intelligent use of limitied computing resources I would expect my requirements is covered by most products, so what would be your recommendation for a user friendly application that doesn't require to much PC power?

Thanks in advance

Magix (ex Sony) Sound Forge Pro topic http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6024/magix-ex-sony-sound-forge-pro-topic Tue, 05 Feb 2013 18:48:29 +0000 driftwood 6024@/talks/discussions Fantastic: Soundforge now available on Mac! I swear by this on the PC. This has been for years my audio editor of choice and its great to be able to have this on OSX - it requires 64 bit OS (Lion and ML compatible only) and its one of the best mastering packages around. Shame there's no CD architect built in but Im sure Sony will furnish us with an update soon.

http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/soundforgepromac

Built on a clean slate for OS X, Sound Forge™ Pro Mac provides a contemporary application environment that’s perfect for recording, editing, processing, and rendering broadcast-quality audio master files. A fresh statement on audio editing software, Sound Forge Pro Mac includes a comprehensive suite of mastering, restoration, and repair tools for immediate results.

With the loss of Bias Peak, the competition was getting thinner on the ground with only Adobe and Steinberg Wavelab to master audio to. Now with this release we have a decent tried and tested editor via the PC. Excellent!

Already own a FX 6300 + R7 260x desktop, will be selling it after that.

I have a $1000 cap. I'm outside U.S. so, Dell would be better because of support here. Also need to buy on Amazon. So, find those two computers:

Dell G3 - 8th gen i7 six-cores, GTX 1050ti 4GB, two fan slim chassis; or Dell 7000 - 7th gen i7 quad-core, GTX 1060 6GB, better cooling and chassis.

Both have thunderbolt and have same price. Other things are identical or not relevant.

Application will be primary Adobe CC and Davinci, but plans use it to learn Nuke, Flame, Vegas and game development things (Godox, Unity, Unreal, Maya).

What do you think?

Will be using FCP 7, FCP X, After Effects, Audition. Also any thoughts on antivirus - needed or not, conflicts with FCP or not?

Learn by watching http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3906/learn-by-watching Sun, 15 Jul 2012 06:39:22 +0000 matthere 3906@/talks/discussions With the wealth of member's knowledge on the Personal-View forum it might be a nice idea for people to share some knowledge on films, shows, directors, cinematographers, editors, documentaries and content that they have learned from. There are huge opportunities to develop bigger brains and skills by watching content provided by Netflicks, Lovefilm, Mubi and similar providers, but a big hurdle, particulally for beginners in movie making is to find good recommendations.

Your recommendation might just be for a great film that you think others would appreciate in which case a short description of the film followed by a subjective score would be helpful to others (eg. enjoyment 8.5/10)

You may feel that the film helped you in specific ways, or you feel compelled to break down your own opinion into other categories that you feel are significant (eg. cinematography/editing/story/innovation/technical expertise/humor/ use of CGI/etc...)

Whilst developing a list of helpful resources for all members to use for their own benefits, there are obviously going to be differences of opinion expressed. Rather than trying to undermine somebody elses subjective score on a particular resource it would benifit everyone if you just add your own opinion next to your own entry, this will allow others to develop an understanding of everyone's "Personal-View". Leading to opinions that we will value based on who's subjective opinion we value, rather than the thread ending up as a flame war on this very subjective subject.

Thank you :)

Looking for beta testers for After Effects/Premiere Plug-in http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14803/looking-for-beta-testers-for-after-effectspremiere-plug-in Wed, 16 Mar 2016 17:26:55 +0000 Brumbazz 14803@/talks/discussions A friend and I have been trying to create a simple little plug-in for After Effects and Premiere. What the plug does is simply stretch a frame to the desired aspect ratio.

The idea behind the plugin is simply that sometimes, it can be advantageous to use the full sensor in 4:3 and then stretch in a 'clever' way afterwards. The included images show an original image in 4:3, stretched 16:9 and stretched 16:9 with a distortion grid overlay and the protected region shown in green. The plugin is quite customizable (stretching, size and position of protected region plus some bells and whistles) but the default settings should work in most cases.

It currently only works under Windows but in both AE and Premiere (6.0 or later), we expect to compile it for Mac eventually.

If you feel like this is a good idea and you would like to help us with testing, send me a short PM. We would like feedback on: bugs, usability, suggested features and settings.

As this is a hobby project no money will be involved :-)

General comments are also welcome

FCP7 Editing 4K in smaller resolution and conforming it later. http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12826/fcp7-editing-4k-in-smaller-resolution-and-conforming-it-later. Sun, 19 Apr 2015 00:19:41 +0000 tomasawyer 12826@/talks/discussions Hi everyone, I have a question regarding editing my 4K footage on my FCP7.

What I do now is I transcode the 4K footage (H264) to 4K (ProRes) and edit away on a 1080 sequence - if the delivery asks for 1080.

The problem is that once I render the sequence and decide to change some small things around or add/trim clips, I have to render again for every step that I change and overall it can be very time consuming.

Is there a way to for example transcode the 4K original footage to a 720p small files JUST FOR THE EDIT and then once the sequence is a lock, conform the clips in the sequence back to their original size (4K) and export the sequence in 1080 and 4k?

Thank you so much.

Automatic Video Editing - Magisto http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12637/automatic-video-editing-magisto Wed, 18 Mar 2015 23:03:07 +0000 Xenocide38 12637@/talks/discussions I think this has been around for awhile but I just came across it so thought I'd share. And first off, I have nothing to do with this app, just thought it was cool and hadn't been mentioned on the forum yet.

It's an app called Magisto (iPhone, iPad, Android, Chrome, etc) that automatically edits your videos into highlight style videos with effects and music. It's certainly not a "pro" application and there's not much you can do to customize the videos it makes but it's perfect for quick and dirty edits of footage that might end up sitting on a hard drive forever.

I personally shoot a lot on my iPhone that I think I'll get around to editing but I never do :-) There is a free versions of the app so it doesn't cost anything to give it a try. The paid tier subscriptions are a little pricey but the free version works well enough.

40" Monitor/HDTV for Editing? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10453/40-monitorhdtv-for-editing Sun, 25 May 2014 15:00:10 +0000 ragnar 10453@/talks/discussions I need some advice.
Here's the quick backstory:

I've been using two 23" Hanspree monitors for all of my Photoshop, AE, and Premiere editing for the last 6 years of so. One of the Hanspree monitors just died the other day and my first thought was to just replace it. Now I'm thinking that perhaps a 40" monitor/hdtv would be a possible choice. A 40" monitor would be about 729 inches square while my old setup of two 23" monitors was 698 inches square. Getting a real honest to god 40" monitor seems too expensive but I did find a Samsung H40B HDTV that looked good. One review said it has 4:4:4 sub sampling (whatever that is) which makes text very sharp and clear, an important factor for me and editing. Anyway, if anyone is editing on something like this I'd appreciate any comments.

Being the lackluster owner of a powerbook (yes the g4) and a macmini, I knew I would have to upgrade computerwise if I ever wished to do something with the footage that I would shoot. Impatient as I am, I bought the camera anyway and now I am looking at two smoking cpu's...(smoking as in not in a good way). And on a (no)budget as I am, I was wondering what you good people would advice me to look at. My situation is such that I really can only go for a laptop. I want the thing to be mobile and I have got no room for a computercorner. So a laptop it must be. Off course I have searched the net and everyone seems to agree that the biggest Apple is the only way to go. I have been an 'apple-man' for the past 13 years, but the things are expensive man! So I am willing to look pc-side as well. The thing is, I really don't know what the minimum requirement is for editing the high bit rates that these wonderful settings produce. Can I get by with an older macpro? What processor/gpu is minimally required? I know fcp7, but am willing to learn avid/premiere. I would very much appreciate your feedback.

anyone recomend me a way to improve my macbook pro for editing http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6517/anyone-recomend-me-a-way-to-improve-my-macbook-pro-for-editing Wed, 27 Mar 2013 11:34:04 +0000 jakepowell 6517@/talks/discussions hi, was wondering if anyone could recommend me some equipment and computer parts (external graphics cards etc) in order to speed up my current editing system. im afraid im a student so spending loads on equipment is a no go, (do not tell me i need a new £5000 desktop etc as this is not practical for me) i want to add bits bit by bit as i can afford them to improve my system gradually .

i currently own a macbook pro 15" 2011 edition with: 2.2ghz i7 , 4gb 1333 ddr3 ram , AMD radeon 6750m 512mb graphics card, 500GB TOSHIBA MK5065GSXF sata hard drive.

how can i speed this system up? i am looking at getting 16gb of ram (which this series of macbook pro accepts) and a solid state hard drive of some sort with fast read write speeds i presume?

is there anything i can do on the graphics card front to speed up programs like premier , speed grade, after effects and davinci resolve lite? (i know i cant change mine as its solderd in but can i plug an external one into my system?

also my max resolution on this screen is 1440x900 - not large enough for davinci can someone tell me if there is a way to get an external moniter running from my macbook with high enough resolution to work on davinci? how do i do this?

im running lion 10.7.5 by the way.

ps sorry vitally i know this thread is a bit of a mess , but i simply do not understand computers enough to be able to find the information i need.

thanks in advance everyone

Improving speed in Premiere Pro CS5 http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5951/improving-speed-in-premiere-pro-cs5 Tue, 29 Jan 2013 16:28:34 +0000 Brian_Siano 5951@/talks/discussions My system's a quad-core 3.2mhz machine, with an Nvidia Geforce 670 card (lots of CUDA) and more than enough memory. Sadly, though, the playback of my AVHCD files is frustrating; sometimes, even playing at quarter-resolution turns choppy. (That may be because the files are very long, and the compression algorithm requires a lot of back and forth.)

Anyway, I'm looking to get better performance without having up upgrade the system, and it appears that there may be 2 strategies. The first is to set up a RAID disk system for video editing. The second is to convert my video files to a less-compressed, more intraframe-like format, so playback may be faster, and edit that. So I have a few questions.

  1. Let's say I want to take my hi-def AVHCD files, and render copies in another format that PP can play back faster. Is there a video format that'd work for this purpose?

  2. How much can a decent RAID system speed up playback in Premiere Pro?

  3. Which is preferred; SATA drives hooked to the motherboard, or USB 3.0 drives?
