In this post http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7535/gh3-loose-hot-shoe-pictures#Item_1 I show the reason I had to get a cage, and how weak the GH3 hot shoe is, I hope this video helps someone else to make a decision on whether to get this cage or not. Take care everyone

Blackmagic Cinema Camera ENG style! http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7825/blackmagic-cinema-camera-eng-style Mon, 19 Aug 2013 04:31:22 +0000 plegilink 7825@/talks/discussions Check out this excellent blog post by Marco Solorio about how he's using the BMCC (ideally MFT version) as an ENG style camera... I have very interested in this

Having had the original Cinema Camera EF for about a year now (since before its public release), I’ve had the opportunity to use the camera in countless situations; jibs, dollies, cranes, sliders, glidecams, various interior/exterior car mounts, and of course, handheld and shoulder mount. The latter has been a little tricky to develop, but with a little ingenuity, a few components, and a drill, I have what I feel is a very capable ENG style rig for the Cinema Camera.

image

Using this rig I built for shooting our BMW documentary film is incredibly functional. I’m able to combine the powerful image quality the Cinema Camera delivers (12-bit RAW, ProRes HQ, and DNxHD), along with the flexibility an ENG camera provides.

Blackmagic Cinema Camera now US$1,995 http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7668/blackmagic-cinema-camera-now-us1995 Fri, 02 Aug 2013 09:34:24 +0000 inviev 7668@/talks/discussions

We have worked very hard over the last year to be able to build the Blackmagic Cinema Camera at a lower cost so we can reduce the price and allow access to digital filming to a wide range of cinematographers and photographers.

We have done it and from today the Blackmagic Cinema Camera EF and MFT models will be reduced in price to US$1,995. This is very exciting and is one of the proudest moments of my life to be able to do this!

I think people will be able to use the savings to invest in some exciting lenses and rigs to really boost the creative possibilities. The Blackmagic Cinema Camera is a fantastic design that's now well proven. The advantage of the 2.5K sensor is it has enough resolution to eliminate the bayer resolution loss of a HD sensor, but when shooting RAW it produces files that are too not to big to store and work with easily. It's a fantastic solution.

All orders placed that have not yet been filled, can be reduced to the new lower price."

Choosing your next camera: Deceptive reviews http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7542/choosing-your-next-camera-deceptive-reviews Wed, 17 Jul 2013 11:20:40 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 7542@/talks/discussions

We present evidence that many product reviews at a private label retailer’s website are submitted by customers who have not purchased the product they are reviewing. We show that these reviews are significantly more negative than other reviews. Moreover, because the reviews are influential, the negative ratings reduce sales of these items.

Deception is generally considered a more cognitively complex process than merely stating the truth leading deceivers to use less complex language. The complexity of the language is often measured by the length of the words used.

Because it is often difficult for deceivers to create concrete details in their messages, they have a tendency to include details that are unrelated to the focus of the message. For example, in a study of deception in hotel reviews report that deceptive reviews are more likely to contain references to the reviewer’s family rather than details of the hotel being reviewed. Other indicators of deception reported in hotel reviews include using more exclamation points “!”

The results indicate strong evidence of deception in the reviews written without a prior transaction. Recall that the word count is one of the most commonly used linguistic cues used to detect deception. The word count for the reviews without prior transactions is approximately 40% higher than in the reviews with prior transactions. We also observe significant (p<0.01) differences on each of the other linguistic cues. We caution that these differences do not indicate that all of the reviews without prior transactions are deceptive. Instead we conclude that these reviews are more likely to contain linguistic cues that are consistent with deception, suggesting that at least some of these reviews are deceptive.

Amazon. The sample of 80 books had a total of 7,219 reviews, averaging 90.2 reviews per book. This included an average of 52.7 reviews tagged as an Amazon Verified Purchase and 37.6 that were not tagged. We report the average rating and the distribution of ratings for these two samples of reviews. We see that the low rating effect is replicated using these reviews from a separate retailer in a different category. The magnitude of the effect is similar to the findings reported before, with approximately twice as many ratings equal to 1 amongst the reviews without a verified Amazon transaction (9.38% versus 4.77%).

Why people write such stuff: The second explanation is in some respects the reverse of the upset customers explanation. It is possible that these customers are acting as “self-appointed brand managers”. They are loyal to the brand and want an avenue to provide feedback to the company about how to improve its products. They will even do so on products they have not purchased.

Third explanation is that reviewers are simply writing reviews to enhance their social status. This explanation is related to the more general question of why do customers ever write reviews with or without prior transactions? In an attempt to answer this more general question some researchers have argued that customers are motivated by self-enhancement. Self-enhancement is defined as a tendency to favor experiences that bolster self-image, and is recognized as one of our most important social motivations. Self-enhancement may explain why reviewers write reviews for items they have not purchased. However, it does not immediately explain why these reviews are more likely to be negative. One possibility is that customers believe that they will be more credible if they contribute some negative reviews.

Secondary body for GH3 system http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7531/secondary-body-for-gh3-system Tue, 16 Jul 2013 11:10:18 +0000 larsarus 7531@/talks/discussions I recently had an accident with my GH3 which broke off the front of the internal flash casing (the camera still worked fine except for the flash), and it was time to get it repaired. Repair time could easily become 4-5 weeks they told me, and I am doing some exotic traveling in the mean time so I am looking for a second body to use with all my cool Panasonic m43-lenses that I can bring on this trip.

I do mostly stills, time-lapse, and occasionally some amateur videography at the moment. The second body should therefore be something good wrt stills (they probably all are), and something I could fool around with while the GH3 is primary on time-lapse-assignment, maybe even do a secondary time-lapse sequence (so internal intervalometer would be nice). Video quality should be ok but does not need to be on par with the GH3. The body should also be smaller (and a lot cheaper) than the GH3, since it will be a B-body I want to bring "just in case" in the bag when the GH3 returns, but which will probably often not be used at all. Compatibility with my Metz mecablitz 58 AF-2 for Olympus / Panasonic / Leica is also something I want.

Anyone in a similar situation? Or just with a good suggestion? I am currently leaning towards something Olympus just to get some experience with in-body image stabilisation compared to Panasonic OIS (and to get stabilisation with the manual / adaptor-mounted lenses).

Even better if they are up to date and sell DSLR gear as well. Not being terribly organized I often find I need to drive out to a shop to get a piece of kit at short notice rather than waiting a few days for delivery... but the shops are closing down at an alarming rate ... A database (or just a list) would be really useful for those of us that need a filter ring / hot shoe adaptor or lens hood at short notice .... cheers

Coldshoe for cage that mounts from the top? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7392/coldshoe-for-cage-that-mounts-from-the-top Sun, 30 Jun 2013 19:48:58 +0000 AndersM 7392@/talks/discussions Hi,

I have a Wooden Camera cage for my GH3. Quite expensive, but great quality/form factor. I'm looking for some cold shoes to mount to the cage, but most I find mounts to a male 1/4-20 and not a female which would make it easier to mount to the cage. Wooden Camera makes one themselves, but at $25 for one, they are quite expensive. http://woodencamera.corecommerce.com/1-4-20-Hot-Shoe.html

So I'm basically looking for a cheaper version of that one.

Anyone know of any?

Thanks!

The Swiss Knife Camera http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7243/the-swiss-knife-camera Thu, 13 Jun 2013 15:16:03 +0000 anthonybert 7243@/talks/discussions Hi everyone,

This post might come a bit as a surprise but I can assure that this a serious matter. You also don't know me but I'm happy to answer any questions

I would ask people to refrain themselves from being over negative or talking for the sake of it.

In my life, I have seen the evolution of cameras from Super 8 BOLEX to today's one. Did I shoot anything worth talking about, short answer is no. what I love is film and technology. Dare I say good and sexy technology!!! I wish I could make my own film but let's face it I'm probably no Spielberg, on the other hand I love design and technology and have been successful at it.

I have been reading forums since they actually exist and I was also very involved in the 35mm adapters and made my own. So my quest like many of you is to have a camera that gives you, not a cinematic image but the image you need to have for the project you are working on. But let's face it, a camera is not only about the image, is it?

Now this is the way I see things and by saying it I do not intend to offend anyone, it just feels to me like the plain truth.

Big corporation like Sony, Panasonic, Canon, Nikon will always give us a bit more or bit less but never the perfect tool as they need to ensure future sales. Of course we can hack some of them but is it a solution in the long run?

High end, Arri and Red cost a fortune and it not accessible to many of us.

Blackmagic comes around and produce a sexy little beast but it's a box with some fancy features and in my opinion it's lacking of some features that makes it not so cool to use. this is not THE CAMERA in my eyes.

So where does it leave us? I know that some beautiful film can be shot with DSLRs and other cameras but how cool would it be to have the Swiss knife camera?

So can we pull it off? Well I can't answer that. Can we try… Well we have to, don't we?

So here is my "Crazy" idea…

I would like to find the people to be able to build such a camera. Sensor Guru… Electronic Guru… Software Guru… Optic Guru… Sound/electronic Guru… Storage Guru…

I'll keep the design part for myself and another person already on it. But Ideas are always welcome.

If you believe that you are one those guys please send me a personal message. If you are but want to know more, then just ask your question on that thread so everybody can see my answer.

So that we are clear. This is not a job offer as such. There will be no salary. So you will ask, what's in it for me?

Well, that's simple, it's fully funded by myself, and for those of you elected to be part of the project, you will each get a substantial stake in the company. Remember this is not for everyone as you will need to put some time on top of your day job so you need to be very passionate about it.

I am based in UK on the M4 corridor between London and Bristol. I would like the candidate to be in this area so it would be easier for meetings but then again if you have what it takes and live outside of the UK, we can always Skype each…

The goal is pure and simple. a camera so modular that everyone should find happiness in it. The software will be open source so everyone can have go and add plugins to it.

Price target, as cheap as possible but of course those people that will put the work in will want to make money out their shares so we will see about that when the time comes.

Features?

Well do I really need to repeat what as been said by you guys a million time?

Short non exhaustive list:

Global shutter - Sensor size? dunno yet! Plenty of DR for sure. internal ND filters Interchangeable lens mounts No moire, No Aliasing 24, 25, 30, 60, 120, 240 Frames per second. The higher rates might just be burst but that will do. Standard removable batteries Balanced sound, 48v, proper mechanical knobs for sound adjustment and dedicated panel. SDI - HDMI outputs. SSD storage

Design - Super ergonomic, remember this is a tools for people to work.

Do i need to go on????

Anyway guys.. Please be constructive.

Thank you

My company is going to invest in camera equipment and have asked me to give them an equipment wish list but with several options. What can anyone advise? We will be shooting high concept corporate videos and transitioning to commercials, to produce in-house at an ad agency.

I was thinking the following for 4k acquisition.

  • Option 1: Sony FS700 + Odyssey 7Q 4k Recorder
  • Option 2: RED Scarlet
  • Option 3: Black Magic Cinema Camera 4K + 2K Pocket Camera
  • Option 4: Canon 1Dc

For HD 1080p;

  • Option 5: Panasonic GH3
  • Option 6: Canon C100 or C300.

Lenses: Zeiss CP.2 lens 5 piece lens kit

Rig - Lanparte Rig

The company already owns Canon 5D MK3 with Canon lenses but I am happy to change.

Thanks in advance.

Sound camera http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6926/sound-camera Thu, 09 May 2013 16:45:00 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 6926@/talks/discussions Uses multiple mikes array.

This is where the sound camera comes in. Just as thermal detector cameras show the distribution of temperature, sound cameras use a microphone arrangement to express the distribution of sound and to find the location of the sound. However, existing sound cameras are not only too big and heavy, their assembly and installation are complex and must be fixed on a tripod. These limitations made it impossible to measure noises from small areas or the base of cars.

The newly developed product is an all-in-one system resolving the inconvenience of assembling the microphone before taking measurements. Moreover, the handle in the middle is ergonomically designed so users can balance its weight with one hand. The two handles on the sides work as a support and enable the user to hold the camera in various ways.

The stage of DSLR cameras in the future http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6662/the-stage-of-dslr-cameras-in-the-future Wed, 10 Apr 2013 16:13:48 +0000 Manu4Vendetta 6662@/talks/discussions This thread isnt for talk or praise the quality of the Pocket Camera that are already well known and there are two thread of it, its for analyze and maybe a little speculate because I havent a crystal ball and dont know anyone who works within the industry film or camera makers to speak firmly of things to come.

Some time ago I've been thinking that one day they will see cameras with dreamy benefits available to our pockets and BMC has taken the first big step.

After impact caused by Pocket Camera at NAB seems as if all DSLR cameras literally stay in the past, the film market and videographic intermediate, semi-pro and professional low budget now has a gear of very low cost, then I wonder how that argument would have for example someone who wants today to buy a 5D MKIII about U$3000 for videos and films when for a third of the cost you have a body that offers RAW with 13 EVF of DR. Who less would suffer possibly are cameras under US$1,000 where the user amateur looking a camera for photo and with video to record the dog pacing on the garden, the family eating BBQ, an afternoon at the beach or something without more pretense, but I dont know if that market segment is sufficient for these traditional manufacturers.

I assume that traditional manufacturers must have a headache because they did not expect this movement. Anybody what will buy a camera for video a film low cost will prefer a DSLR digital -regardless the record format- to a camera to record in RAW?

BMC's movement beneficent the market because it will be forced to Sony, Panasonic, Canon and Nikon to compete with similar or better gear features, that or leave the market for inematographers and filmakers low budget because they havent argument to compete equal now.

PS, sorry for my poor english.

Choosing your next camera: Making decisions http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6171/choosing-your-next-camera-making-decisions Mon, 18 Feb 2013 14:40:58 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 6171@/talks/discussions

We end up with the evaluation spreadsheet. Each row lists some feature or sub-feature that someone has determined the technology must have. These features are all weighted according to their importance.

The columns then reflect all the options. Fill each cell with a number assessing how well this option delivers this feature, and you calculate a score for each option. Select the one with the highest weighted score, and you have the best technology for your needs.

Problem is, this rarely works.

For a start, the features and weightings aren’t objective. Someone gathers requirements, filtering them as they go. People argue about weightings. Ultimately, the person with the most power decides. We’ve just shifted the politics into the structure of the spreadsheet.

Research into the way experts make decisions shows that they rarely think through a set of options and assess them against objective “decision criteria”.

In situations where they need to integrate a lot of information, deal with uncertainty, and balance the concerns of diverse perspectives, experts go through the following stages:

They imagine themselves into the situation.

  1. They identify a single option that will most likely meet their needs.
  2. They test this option, mentally, against the situation.
  3. If this option works well enough, they don’t waste time on further analysis. They select it and get into action.
  4. If the option doesn't work, they adapt and adjust it in their minds. If they can find a way to make it work, they use it.
  5. If they can’t find a way to make it work, they look for other options.
  6. They may go through this loop several times, using the selection and testing and adaptation of options to improve their understanding of the situation. They evolve a workable solution.

Experts can do this remarkably quickly. Fire fighters and other emergency service workers go through this loop in life-and-death situations in fractions of a second.

We’re not fire fighters Lives don’t depend on the split-second timing of our decisions. So it makes sense to balance scenario-based decision-making with some thought about features, functionality and weighing off the different options.

We should make it easy to imagine ourselves into the situation we’re trying to address. What would it be like to use this system, work with this agency, etc? Write scenarios rather than feature lists, and ask vendors to explain how their technology fits each scenario.

We need to give ourselves hands-on time with each option, so we can experience how they really work. Vendor-driven presentations aren’t enough. Pilots are ideal, or hands-on workshops where we can try the options for ourselves during the course of the procurement.

PROBLEM - GH2: please turn off camera and then back on again http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6065/problem-gh2-please-turn-off-camera-and-then-back-on-again Sat, 09 Feb 2013 01:50:28 +0000 S2408 6065@/talks/discussions Every time I turn on the camera the "please turn off camera and then back on again" sign immediately appears. does anyone know what it is? is it hardware or software? there is no immediate connection with anything. one day turned on the camera and it just said this. tried it with out card or lens and it's the all the same. can't access nothing in the menu so a reset is impossible, right? oh, it's hacked to a very low bit rate (48 mb/s from mpgxsvcd based on v1.1) so I guess it has no relation to it, and it worked fine until now. if anyone could help or knows what's going one, please say something, thanks.

Film-making in the cold - how do you keep your equipment going? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5595/film-making-in-the-cold-how-do-you-keep-your-equipment-going Thu, 27 Dec 2012 19:24:19 +0000 RRRR 5595@/talks/discussions On set today (just below 0 celsius) I had a hard time with vintage focusing helicoids stiffening up to the point where it was impossible to use a follow focus. A fog machine couldn´t get warm enough to produce smoke, among other things. What are your tips / workarounds for keeping gear in working order when the conditions are difficult? Another day of shooting tomorrow and I´m trying to come up with some ways to at least be able to use the lenses I intended to.

Suggestions for Best Camera + Lens for ~$1K http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5521/suggestions-for-best-camera-lens-for-1k Tue, 18 Dec 2012 16:42:44 +0000 jsteg094 5521@/talks/discussions Hello,

I've spent weeks researching, and I've decided to turn to some aficionados.

First up, Camera: I've found that the GH2 is the best price/performance camera. Is this still true today, or are there better ones, such as the Olympus E-M5? Or, would it be best to wait -- do you think there will be anything extraordinary worth waiting for in the first few months of 2013?

Lastly, Lens: I've seen some people use old TV SD 2/3" Lenses, like B4 and C-Mount, etc. Are these worth it? I've heard that (for the most part), the IQ isn't very good, and there's a large amount of work (modifications) to get them to work.

Should I instead be looking at native lenses, like the Leica 25mm? Lots of people talk about anamorphic lenses, and the Voigtlander f/0.95. It seems like almost everyone raves about the Voigtlander, and while it seems expensive, is it truly worth it (price/performance) over say the Panny 20mm or even the Leica 25mm?

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I hope this topic helps others as well! -Josh
