Used them for just over two hours and they did not quit, though pressed the 'T' button on the back afterwards and battery level indicator did not light up any of the 4 or 5 level lights, indicating the batteries were nearly fully discharged. Looking to get some of the larger NP-F970 or similar batteries (6600 mAh+/-) and see some on ebay for $17 shipped and some for $150. Most are around $25-$35. Can anyone give some feedback about what has worked for them?

I looked through the current threads and did not see much info about this. If I missed it, can someone please point me in that direction and then Vitaliy can close this thread.

Edit: Also, do you need to have matching capacity batteries on these 312 LED lights? And do the two batteries run in a series or in parallel - essentially do they increase the voltage by having two, or simply extend the run time?

Thanks!

GH5 froze during recording, resulting in unreadable mdt file http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16854/gh5-froze-during-recording-resulting-in-unreadable-mdt-file Thu, 04 May 2017 12:30:06 +0000 SuperTinyMagnet 16854@/talks/discussions Hey folks! I need help repairing a video file. The other day during a professional shoot, my new GH5 froze up when I hit the record button to stop recording at the end of a 23-minute (!!!) interview take. Even after flipping the power-off switch, the camera stayed on and frozen. I had to remove the battery pack. Now I have an unreadable/unfinished .mdt file that can't be read or played back. Has anyone run into this before?

I'm also wondering how I can prevent this from happening again. I was shooting 4K 10-bit 23.976fps using a Lexar U3 150 mb/s SD card with 128GB of storage (I had used 122gb by the end of the take, and had a few gigs to spare.) I was also using a 3rd party battery by Newmowa, but it had plenty of charge remaining.

Thanks for reading! Any leads at all would be hugely appreciated.

None of them show level indicator as far as I know.

Power rating is mostly true, so it holds the same or even longer than original battery.

Replacement for the stock battery for G7, GH2, possibly the new G85 http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15833/replacement-for-the-stock-battery-for-g7-gh2-possibly-the-new-g85 Sun, 02 Oct 2016 11:32:48 +0000 DrDave 15833@/talks/discussions Actually, a good replacement for the stock battery. Maybe more. For G7, GH2 &c. possibly the new G85

I use a lot of the BLC12 Batteries. I buy the Panasonic ones; they aren't cheap but they last the longest and don't turn the camera off with no warning.
However, I do buy aftermarket batteries for testing from time to time. They often have very high ratings, and they never work very well.
A few years ago, I bought the DSTE "1600mah" battery. It had about 70 percent of the stock battery's power, and the stock battery is 1200 mah. So that's 840mah, or about half the advertised capacity.
A few weeks ago, I purchased the 1700 mah version at this link:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MEAMBQU
It weighs 55 gm as opposed to the stock 50gm. Previous clones weighed 46 and 48 gm.
Now before you get excited, the extra weight is probably ballast, since you can't squeeze more cells into a battery, as a general rule.
However, after extensive testing, this battery is equal to--not better--but equal to stock. The only difference is that the shutdown curve is a bit steeper.
So it isn't "1700" mah, but it is basically a stock battery.
This was quite a shock, but I repeated the tests several times. In one test, I simply turn on the camera and record video until the battery croaks, and measure the time. Both the stock battery and the DSTE run the G7 for two hours of video, sometimes a few minutes more, sometimes a few minutes less. So, finally, an inexpensive option. At least for this batch. Also, see my post on the cheap external battery that will run your camera all day.

Step-up USB adapters for Panasonic, Canon, Sony & others http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/18896/step-up-usb-adapters-for-panasonic-canon-sony-others Tue, 30 Jan 2018 23:19:58 +0000 DrDave 18896@/talks/discussions These have been around for awhile, but the price has come way down. Basically, it's a USB DC-DC converter that lifts the standard USB 5 volts to, for example, 8.4 volts for Panasonic.

I purchased this one.

image

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073XYYYWR

There's another model that has two USB inputs, so you could use two power banks or use one and draw more amps.

I was skeptical, and the packaging made me even more so, cardboard & crinkly shrinkly, but I plugged it into my cheapest 5200mah power bank and measured the voltage. 8.8 volts, which is just about right (I've gone as high as 9.2, but prefer not to). Notably, the needle on my trusty voltmeter did not wiggle. Also noteworthy, it didn't seem to need the recommended 3 amp draw. It comes with a 3 amp wall wart if you just want to plug the camera into the mains for power.

It comes with a bog standard dummy battery. The step up converter is tiny, not much thicker than the cable. Plugged in the camera (Panasonic G7) and waited. The 5200mah power bank ran the camera for 156 minutes, or two and one half hours. Not bad--you are going to lose some power in the conversion so don't skimp on the power bank. I'll do some tests later with my RAV 20,000mah bank.

Camera ran cooler than expected.

So there you have it, easy, lightweight power from USB. I had been using 9 volt packs with stacks of Panasonic 18650 cells (runs forever....). But this is really easy.

You can buy adapters for most cameras, and considering the fact that it comes with a dummy battery, the price is cheap. Will it burn out? Interesting question.

GH5 DIY Power Solution development http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16830/gh5-diy-power-solution-development Sat, 29 Apr 2017 22:15:35 +0000 nahlene 16830@/talks/discussions Dear fellows @ Personal View,

New registered user but frequent visitor here. My name is Chenxing and I am based in Toronto, Canada. I run a small documentary and commercial production house ( our website). 1 month ago We've got an early shipping of the GH5 and tested in field. Turns out the battery performance is not as good as i hoped (4k with IBIS only last a bit more than 1 hour 20 mins in real world usage.). So 1 month later, now I am in the process of co-designing an enhanced battery grip specifically for GH5 that will be able to at least triple GH5 4k running time, AND optionally output power for more devices.

I am now working with a reputed camera power supply workshop in Beijing, China. We are half-way in the prototype making and expected to have this thing go on KICKSTARTER by the end of May and start shipping around early August.

As you can see in the pictures below, at this time we have finished the 1st prototype with Li-polymer built-in battery, which currently supplies 5500mAh (a standard Panasonic DMW-BLF19 supplies 1860mAh), our not-so-scientific first test suggests that the GH5 camera will continuous run around 9 hours with the grip (4k 422 10bit, Leica 12-60 f2.8-4, on tripod, IBIS abled but it's slacking on tripod.)

image

But here's the fun part, in the Prototype ii, i am suggesting to implement additional power outputs on the grip. So that the grip will be able to supply 7.4 power to gh5 via dummy battery while simultaneously supply:

  • DC 12v (emergency use for most LEDs and some hungrier devices such as BMDCC and BMMCC)
  • DC 7.4v (most monitors, recorders, taredek wireless devices can be powered by 7.4v power)
  • 5v USB (emergency charging for most smartphones, most Sony α series, and some wierdo small LEDs)

I've got this idea to carry less battery and most importantly, improve the ergonomic of the whole rig (decrease the weight on the top). Essentially it's got most of benefit of using v-mount battery without the weight, size, cost and troubles.

But since this would cost a bit in R&D and implementation. I'd like to ask some questions to help us better make decisions. You opinion is deeply appreciated:

  1. Do you think you would buy this battery grip with power output? If so, what do you mostly shoot?
  2. Do you think the 3 power output plan meets your need? If it's too much or not enough let me know.
  3. Is there any other additional function you really want to add to this battery grip?
  4. What is your price range perception for this product.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION.

If this product could achieve reasonably well reception we will use the income to design a generic battery grip for all dslr and mirrorless video cameras that can also be used partially as a cheeseplate/halfcage (an optimized and more practical competition to Atomos PowerStation sort of...).

Compact Powerbank solution for actioncam? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16568/compact-powerbank-solution-for-actioncam Thu, 09 Mar 2017 13:31:59 +0000 fatpig 16568@/talks/discussions As a new owner of an EKEN H8 Plus Actioncam I am now looking to extend its 50min battery life to survive a whole concert. What I love about these cams is the compact form factor, So I would hate to have to somehow glue a powerbank to the mic-stand that I normally use to mount the actioncam behind the drummer. Any interesting, perhaps mountable external battery solutions out there that connect to the micro usb? This cam has the GoPro Form factor, but not the proprietary battery connector.

External battery solutions for GH4 http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10429/external-battery-solutions-for-gh4 Wed, 21 May 2014 22:49:11 +0000 dracore 10429@/talks/discussions Anyone successfully using external batteries with the GH4? I am using the ones I had with the GH2 which was a 9V/12V Li-ion external battery which was purchased from eBay (basically one of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/DC-12V-6500MA-9V-8500MA-5V-15000MA-Rechargeable-Li-ion-Battery-Pack-for-CCTV-Cam-/370960595674?pt=US_Rechargeable_Batteries&hash=item565ef97ada). What I am noticing is that when I turn on the GH4, I see the battery indicator on the GH4 show full battery status but flickering like mad. If the LCD is on, the display flickers too. The flickering battery indicator actually is an issue because the moment you try to access the menu system, you get kicked out immediately. Although it seems that I can still record despite the flicker.

If you are using an external battery solution successfully, what do you have?

Searching for gear for GH4 for shooting in Taiwan http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14009/searching-for-gear-for-gh4-for-shooting-in-taiwan Sat, 31 Oct 2015 10:06:07 +0000 kolinko 14009@/talks/discussions Hello!

I didn't have much time to check out the gh4 so far, a lot of work hinders me, going too far into research for each little thing myself, that's why I hoped I could get a little support from you hear. Mostly I'll record video and sound on myself at the same time, not sure if I'll have an assistant from time to time. My idea until now is to record in 4k, maybe in 24fps should be alright I guess. The shooting will be for a 5 video monitor/large flat screen panels installation.

My equipment so far: GH4 with kit lens 12-35mm

  • Voigtlander Nocton 17.5mm 0.95f with UV and ND filters
  • Voigtlander Nocton 42.5mm 0.95f with UV and ND filters
  • One SD card SanDisk Extreme Pro 32GB 280 MB/s (I'll have another one like that)
  • only one battery so far
  • trolley case

I'll definitely need a second battery or the battery grip, is it a good thing to have?

  • Sound Recording device
  • Microphone (one or two? maybe too much to handle!)
  • Wind jammer (boom?)

  • Any experiences with 'Rycote Zoom H5 Audio Kit' or 'Tascam DR-60DmkII 4-Channel Portable Recorder with Rode NTG2 Condenser Shotgun Mic Kit'?

  • Tripod mainly to use as proper stand in any condition, not sure if I'll need a very heavy one for doing pans?

  • Rig / steady cam? I actually would prefer shooting with a rig/steady cam to make pans with a heavy tripod. Follow focus! Which one?

  • A super-portable extra light like dedo light!

  • SSD discs for backups?

  • A Mattebox?

And everything should be of proper quality, lightweight one-person-solutions, possible to get through the airports O.K..

Thanks, I appreciate your hints, ideas, experiences and comments ! kolinko
