Sony RM-LVR1 or RM-LVR2 remote with cameras other than their action cam http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13861/sony-rm-lvr1-or-rm-lvr2-remote-with-cameras-other-than-their-action-cam Wed, 30 Sep 2015 13:44:45 +0000 eatstoomuchjam 13861@/talks/discussions I'm not finding a lot of people online who have talked about using the Sony RM-LVR1 or RM-LVR2 with cameras other than the Sony action cam, though supposedly it is also compatible with the alpha cameras (the A7s in particular is mentioned). It's inexpensive and relatively small and it seems like it could be sort of handy on a multi-camera shoot when I'm all alone (it'd save some running from tripod to tripod hitting record and stop buttons at the beginning and end of every take).

Have any of you given it a try?

Short Doc - Shot in Bush of Sierra Leone. A7s II, Rokinon 20mm, No lights. http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16725/short-doc-shot-in-bush-of-sierra-leone.-a7s-ii-rokinon-20mm-no-lights. Tue, 11 Apr 2017 10:33:36 +0000 TS_Naylor 16725@/talks/discussions A family's sense of mission brings desperately needed health and medical aid to Sierra Leone's poorest of the poor.

This film was shot entirely on a Sony A7s II with no lights, tripod or crew, just me as director - DP. For my day job, I work with full size crews and camera packages (Alexa, Red, etc) for TV and commercials. But this project, took place in the bush of one of the poorest countries on Earth. The entire camera / sound package had to fit in a small back back and never leave my sight. For sound I used a Rode Video Mic Pro for almost everything and a Sennheiser G3 kit for interviews. For glass, I used a Canon 24-105 and a Rokinon 20mm Cine as well as a full set of Tiffen White Water 77mm Filters and BW Polarizer.

Initially, I ran with a Movcam cage and top handle as well with Wooden Camera handgrips and an F&V Spectra 4.3" on board monitor. But after a few hours, I realized the paramilitary look of the camera attracted too much attention and undermined my subject's candidness, I stripped it down to just the camera body, metabones E mount adaptor, lens and Rode Mic and used the camera's EVF or LCD. It's amazing how a small change in gear, changes people's behavior around you. If I came in with a proper "pro" rig, I would've been mobbed at every turn.

For settings, I tried the EOS Pro Settings. Big mistake. Contrasty and red. Fail for sunny conditions and skin tones. You'll can easily see which shots used that. I then switched back to my reliable Cine 4 settings with black level pushed up, magenta down, sharpness all the way down, etc. Despite the settings mistake, it was definitely a blast and a learning experience.

Post was done on FCPX. With the latest updates, I find this to be the best doc editing software out there. Took me a while to make the switch but once I figured out the language, it saves me at least 30 % more time over Premier or Avid. Transcoded A7s II 4k footage to Pro Rez LT to cut and finish on.

Anyway, enjoy the film.

Info and ideas request: Static electricity causing Shogun to skip frames http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16566/info-and-ideas-request-static-electricity-causing-shogun-to-skip-frames Wed, 08 Mar 2017 08:42:53 +0000 JackBayer 16566@/talks/discussions Hi!

I just and finally determined the cause of my Shogun (attached to an a7s) skipping one frame and starting new clips during recording: Static electricity. It didn't always behave like that but for a while now. So I replaced all cables to no avail and when sitting on my sofa and again touching the camera it zipped me and I could see the Shoguns screen go black for an instance. I can reproduce this as often as I want.

So let this be an info for you, in case you're wondering about the same thing. And if anybody has an idea on how to be permanently earthed while walking and shooting? Much abliged. :)

Greetings!

Camera Upgrade 4k, Blackmagic, or Not? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/14938/camera-upgrade-4k-blackmagic-or-not Fri, 08 Apr 2016 17:26:43 +0000 AnamatisRmG 14938@/talks/discussions Let me keep this short. I've secured $5000 funding for a camera upgrade. I've been using an FS100 for 3/4 years and have enjoyed low light and 60fps capabilities. I've been freelancing and running my small prod company for the same amount of time and my commercial is reaching new levels, and my clientele is slightly climbing the ladder.

The big question is : Do I need to upgrade to a 4k system to be able to compete next year and the following 3?

If so do I go the Big Ursa route? Or the Ursa Mini 4.6 k. (I may be able to acquire a Big Ursa V1 for $3800)

Either way I'm looking at pairing with an A7s as lowlight isn't a huge muscle with these cameras.

If 4k isn't necessary than I'm looking at an FS700 as over crank is a big component of my work and I maintain low light capabilities.

My main concerns about the Big Ursa are flying it (gimbal, crane, slider, hand held, tripod for that matter)

Sony A7s alternatives for low light? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/13425/sony-a7s-alternatives-for-low-light Mon, 20 Jul 2015 18:44:57 +0000 Ittaidv 13425@/talks/discussions We run a little production company and are looking to buy some new camera gear. We currently shoot a lot in nightclubs and difficult light situations. We use our camera's in a multi camera enviroment: using the hdmi out, convert it to hd-sdi and run them to a video mixer.

We planned to buy 4 x A7s, with lenses and accecoires this summer, but ran a little out of money. 12 - 14 K is a little unrealistic to spend right now. Still we really need some camera's that will do extremely well in low light. Something we can crank up high in ISO and still will look clean.

The A7s is absolutely the best in low light, but maybeye we might settle for a little less low light and spend a lot less money.

That's why I'm now looking for an alternative: a camera that is lots cheaper then A7s, has a wide angle lens or can fit one, is able to run on AC power for a long time (10-12 hours) and has a clean and very high ISO. Something that will allow us to make shots in a very dark club, that are still clear and sharp and noise free.

I already saw a lot of cheaper cams that have high ISO available, but there's so many new models coming out nowadays, that it's a little difficult to get a clear overview and compare them all.

Anyone who knows a decent compact, at a decent price for me?

BMCC EF vs Sony A7s for a feature film with a lot of night shoots? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11517/bmcc-ef-vs-sony-a7s-for-a-feature-film-with-a-lot-of-night-shoots Wed, 08 Oct 2014 02:33:24 +0000 IronFilm 11517@/talks/discussions How does the A7s and the BMCC compare against each other?

Because I've just joined on as the DoP to shoot a feature on a BMCC, but given the nature of the film (shooting most of the time late at night), am wondering if a Sony A7s is better.

Am curious about some direct comparisons between an A7S and a BMCC at night, and how they'd be able to grade, and how they'd be used in practise with lighting set ups (as if we can use a smaller lighting kit, that might help mitigate some of the cost of an A7S), their look, etc.

As if so, I might then recommend to the director trying to find space in the tiny budget to switch to a Sony A7S instead.

What I really wish Sony would do is make something like an A7S version of the Sony A5100. So perhaps an APS-C version with merely a 5 megapixel sensor and the same amazing low light performance as the A7S but with the cheap price of the A5100!

As I don't need a "full frame" sensor, neither do I need more than 5 megapixels so as to have enough for 4K video. I'm content with 1080p.(after all, even with the A7s, most are not shooting 4K because it doesn't do internal 4K)

Unfortunately I don't think a 5 megapixel camera would go down well at all with the typical 2014 consumer, even though I've shot plenty with my old Nikon D50 which was only 6 megapixels. So I think 5 megapixels would do just fine for casual photography, especially as it would be a very very good 5 megapixels. (plus of course I wouldn't be getting it for photography, but video)

Sony Super White 109 IRE 1300% Dynamic Range S-LOG 2 http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/10133/sony-super-white-109-ire-1300-dynamic-range-s-log-2 Thu, 10 Apr 2014 08:33:11 +0000 apefos 10133@/talks/discussions With the possibility to use focal reducers on the low budget route, I restarted to do some researches about Sony cameras. Also the Sony full frame is improving a lot so it deserves some attention. Used NEX are very cheap at this moment so I downloaded some native mts clips to confirm if the aliasing/moire problem was that bad or not. I am doing some tests with deinterlace and also found the QTGMC which can do 60i to 60p conversion and/or remove 24p and 60p progressive shimmering with promissing results, it seems to be a good approach to solve the aliasing in old NEX cameras.

For my surprise I found in the waveform that the Sony NEX F3 and 5N can record highlights up to 109 IRE, almost 10% above 100, and this 109 value can be lowered to under 100 in post to a nice improvement in dynamic range avoiding highlight clip. It is amazing how good results from lowering 109 to under 100 can delivery just lowering video gain to 91 or 93 %. It does not turn the highlights into a grey mass, there is gradation and texture in the super whites.

This super white combined with DRO (5 levels of shadow lifting) can give a interesting dynamic range result. If the QTGMC can reduce the aliasing and shimmering to an acceptable level the old cheap NEX will become very useful with the lens turbo, more wide, 1 fstop more light. The iso 1600 from the old NEX cleans OK with Neatvideo.

It seems there is a new life to the old cheap NEX-F3 for who cannot afford the new A7s or the new A6000.

Interesting reading about the super white 109 ire and sony S-LOG 2 1300% dynamic range:
