  • @jaecjaec I know that, what I mean, why should I use LED Fresnel instead of Tungsten Fresnel?
  • @Aksel typically the answer is going to be efficiency and less heat. Leds are about 90% more efficient than Tungsten. For practical purposes, that means that you don't need special circuits, etc. Having 3000 watts of tungsten light, plus other devices makes it difficult to shoot in typical house hold settings with 15 - 20 amp circuits. All that wattage also create lots of heat. Imagine your typical 1000w space heater, that's what it feels like. Fire, burn risks, etc. Also Tungsten light is full spectrum, meaning you can easily get a sunburn. LEDs don't flicker, and are the most durable lights. They are solid state. LEDs major disadvantages are usual quality/color of light, and price. But for me the biggest selling points for LEDs are that I can power them off of batteries entirely. Rather than buying one large panel, say the 1000 LED panel, I'm going to buy 12 of the 312 panels and arrange them as I see fit. The 312s are a good light source, they come with batteries, and are very portable. My only problems are now that I need a couple of spot lights, and I need them to be LEDs as well. I'm looking at this fresnel, but am not sure how good they are. No review yet. I fact, I've yet to see them in real life. Just catalogs. So unless one of our user has seen them, I probably will wait a bit. Probably will buy some Wallis that VK has posted else where, or a couple of these:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/250826304184?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

I'm imagining not bringing any electrical wires at all for my next project . . .
  • @jaecjaec Thank you man, that was very helpful
  • Yes, I too would like to see a review of the Fresnel LED. Also what is the company that makes these? The LitePanel LED Fresnels are insanely expensive.
  • Well, I went to a local dealer and looked at a bunch of LEDs. There is a huge difference in the quality of different panels out there. I ended up going with Camlights below. It did cost an arm and a leg, but I figure its a 10 year investment. Both are 'focusable' by means of actually altering the angle of the LED subpanels. I've never seriously looked at LED lights before. A couple of observations, in case some one is considering a purchase. First, I didn't know if LED panels are considered 'soft' or 'hard' lights. I'd say they are some where in between. Perhaps a bit on the 'hard' side. Secondly, none of the panels, at any price, throw very far. I wasn't expecting this since my LED flashlights are so powerful. The lens and reflectors in a flashlight makes a huge difference. Third, the throw angles are fairly narrow. Although my lights have barn doors, they really don't work that well. Lastly, I don't have any hope of a 'real' LED spot lights right now. Just have to make use of my flashlights.

  • @JDN - Cool solution, using the Photoflex softboxes. I totally get the idea and I've got some similar Chimera boxes I can experiment with. Looking forward to pictures. @Twitherb - Thanks for the link to editman site and the pics of the 508 - it's amazing how small and thin it is! I'm also interested in knowing where you got them and how much they cost. I just ordered a new 900 LED bicolor panel from the same Chinese manufacturer that makes the 312 (or maybe several companies make them?) It looks like a knock off of the LitePanel 1x1. It's funny, they intentionally left off the barn doors so they look more alike.

  • How would the single color and bi-color compare in their output, when I´d put a CTO gel on the first and tuned the second all the way to 3200°?

  • Ha, I didn't even know that shooting with them mixed made for a better CRI -- I just always did it (w/manual white balance) because it "looked" better. Good to know though. Gonna stick with that approach. @JackBayer, in case your curious, here's a recent example of something shot with mixed 312s -- key is from 2 x 312 in a softbox with egg crate, fill from 1 312 in a large sof box with extra level of diffusion inside, and there's a dialed down 312 in a home made snoot high behind him. The blurry foreground interest is a duck, as he is a duck scientist.

50mm 1.4 FD wide open with black frost 1/8 and .6 ND infront of it. Aquamotion 2. BTW, the other thing nice about the bi-colour is you can balanced mixed, then use lights (usually bg or accent) full daylight or full tungsten instead of having to worry about blue/orange gels.

  • Thanks VK

and @JDN thanks for sharing. In fact I am of course wondering how usable they are for those exact same setups. Although I´d probably need more DOF, but since you´re using NDs there´s even some play left. :)

  • int32, which one? There are two versions, the bi-color version is less powerful.

  • Isn't it a bit of an overkill, to have a softbox on the LED light? I mean, how many times do you really need to control the light spill in the situations you use those LED lights for?

IMHO, a piece of white diffuser in a holder placed about 10" in front of the LED bank does a great job making a soft light source.

  • @mo7ies not sure if that is such an overkill. that box looks quite convenient and practical. On the weekend, I was on a shot that made me think that it could be useful. Sure, you could diffuse the light as you described above. On that shoot we tried that with a larger LED and we just couldn't get it right in the short amount of time we had (48h film competition). I am not sure if the 312 with a softbox like that could have been more useful....but maybe.

  • About the new 508 LED, are there some updates? I agree with @mo7ies, the included diffuser is ok for use.

  • I haven't ordered any for these lights yet, you can get the little magnets from DealExtreme .. and use 4 to hold a piece of any gel you like in front of the light

  • So based on experience of those who bought them, is there a good set for a 3-light interview setup, which can be deployed with batteries or mains power, and will last a few years, in a nice case? Ideally, they should have stands, a dimmer, bi-led mixer, barn doors and fresnel. A few gels and a softbox might be fun to add. How much do I need to spend to get this combination?

  • I know this monitor doesn't have HDMI output, but, someone will know if this monitor can output the HDMI signal through composite output at the same time?

    Cheers.

  • I just ordered the SEETEC 5.6" monitor with 1280x800 panel - will do a video opinion when it arrives, if you have any questions you want included just PM me

  • @tired Can't wait to hear what you have to say about the screen!

  • Just got the metal monitor. The color is a good match to the oled, sharpness and build are outstanding.

  • Just got the 7" IPS monitor. It is far better than anything I have seen to date. The picture is sharp and beautiful and very quick to eyeball in with the knobs.

  • The body is plastic but parts are metal and quality seems very high. It looks sturdy.

  • I really want an affordable sdi evf (don't feel like spending a lot on an alphatron). I guess the mentality is, "the guy's camera has sdi out, he must have a lot of money to spend."
