I've a couple of reports of SD UHS-1 working with the GH2 (a couple on this forum, one elsewhere, and digitalrev.com is actually bundling the GH2 with a UHS-I card), and UHS-I is faster than SDHC class 10, so it would seem to be the logical choice when pushing the bitrate limits.

However, there are also a couple of reports of UHS-I cards performing similar to a SDHC class 6. Also linked from the GH2 hack thread was this test: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/sdxc-sdhc-uhs-i,2940-12.html which seems to indicate current UHS-I cards may have slower continuous write speed than speed class 10 (though they have much faster read).

Also, the GH2 is compatible with SDXC according to the spec on the Panasonic website - but I see no discussion of results here yet.

This topic is to report experiences with UHS-I and/or SDXC cards. Please state the normal make / model / speed class info, and also whether the card has been verified to operate at the specified speed in another device.]]>

I was recently hired to do a shoot in the Dominican Republic in late November and I am just getting all of my gear ready for the end of the month.

I'm looking for any tips or information anyone has to shooting internationally and especially in a warm humid climate like the Caribbean.

So far I will be using the following:

Panasonic GH4, GH3 and AC90 Canon 5d mkii Zoom H4N x2 Shure Wireless Lav mics X2 1tb WD passport drives x6

Any suggestions as to the best way to backup or if even using separate drives is the best option?

I didn't know when and why it happened. I have to explain that I use safe box for sd cards. Today another SanDisk card has fallen apart. It looks like they do not use proper glue to keep all parts of sd card together. Kingston cards, that I use longer than SanDisk cards, never has fallen apart, nor had been broken or something. Most people at Personal View recommend SanDisk cards for patches like Driftwood's Moon, Spizz, Nebula. I'd like to know, are there fast cards of other brands to use with these patches safetly, because i'm loosing trust for SanDisk cards.

Back in the 1990s, historical societies, museums and symphonies across the country began transferring all kinds of information onto what was thought to be a very durable medium: the compact disc.

Now, preservationists are worried that a lot of key information stored on CDs — from sound recordings to public records — is going to disappear. Some of those little silver discs are degrading, and researchers at the Library of Congress are trying to figure out why.

Testing found that not all CDs are the same. The outer coating of some CDs erodes, leaving a silver layer exposed. And when you leave silver exposed, it tarnishes.

"By increasing the relative humidity and temperature, you're increasing the rate of chemical reaction occurring,"

Researcher France says many of them can actually last for centuries if they're taken care of. "The fastest way to destroy those collections is to leave them in their car over summer," she says — "which a lot of people do."

Archival Disc - optical disc for backup purposes http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/9827/archival-disc-optical-disc-for-backup-purposes Mon, 10 Mar 2014 04:43:50 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 9827@/talks/discussions

Sony Corporation ("Sony") and Panasonic Corporation ("Panasonic") today announced that they have formulated "Archival Disc", a new standard for professional-use, next-generation optical discs, with the objective of expanding the market for long-term digital data storage*.

Optical discs have excellent properties to protect themselves against the environment, such as dust-resistance and water-resistance, and can also withstand changes in temperature and humidity when stored. They also allow inter-generational compatibility between different formats, ensuring that data can continue to be read even as formats evolve. This makes them robust media for long-term storage of content. Recognizing that optical discs will need to accommodate much larger volumes of storage going forward, particularly given the anticipated future growth in the archive market, Sony and Panasonic have been engaged in the joint development of a standard for professional-use next-generation optical discs.

image

Both Sony and Panasonic aim to launch systems with a recording capacity of 300 GB per disc from summer 2015, onwards. In addition, both companies plan to leverage their respective technologies to further expand the recording capacity per disc to 500 GB and 1 TB.

In recent times, demand for archival capabilities has increased significantly in the film industry, as well as in cloud data centers that handle big data, where advances in network services have caused data volumes to soar.

PARK RIDGE, N.J., Dec. 11, 2013 — Sony’s newest USB flash drive is a “2-in-1” device, with dual micro USB and USB 2.0 connectors for fast and easy back-up, sharing and storing of personal content. The new drive fits most Android* smartphones and tablets so mobile consumers can transfer and view photos and videos without using cables or Wi-Fi access.

image

According to industry research, photo-taking is the third most common use for a smartphone, with viewing and sharing not far behind. Tablets are also finding similar use, increasing the need for multi-function devices.

Consumers want to let a friend see the photo they just took or share a video easily with as few steps as possible,” said Viviano Cantu, director of consumer media marketing, Sony Electronics. “These new drives combine convenience, peace of mind and performance and are perfect for mobile multi-tasking.”

The compact devices are available in capacities of 8, 16 and 32 GB, and in a choice of 3 different cap colors. They join Sony’s existing line of storage and transfer options for home and mobile use, giving consumers more flexibility in how they manage personal data.

The new drives are compatible with Android* devices, version 4.0.3 to 4.3** and offer the USB On-the-Go (OTG) function, which allows portable devices like smartphones to act as a “host” when connected to other USB peripherals.

Better yet, a USB 3.0 port to which one could connect an external SSD? 64GB is a lot, but running Moon T7 (my favorite patch ever) for extended concerts definitely eats 64GB cards up. Putting an adapter card in and using a 256GB CF card or better yet a high speed Samsung Evo 500GB SSD would be an awesome solution. Does anything like this exist? I tried googling it and didn't find anything, but it seems like it should be possible.

Transcend WiFi SD card allows to transfer pictures taken with my DSLR (which, being a NEX, is quite portable) to any wifi-enabled device in a matter of seconds. SD card which can wirelessly transfer pictures to my phone seemed like a good solution. And it was! (and still is). The mobile apps could.. no, should be improved quite a bit (why download a 7MB image once to render it, only to download it AGAIN when tapping "download"?), but hey, it gets the job done!

This small device can not only store 16GB -there's even a 32GB version available- in such a tiny space, but is an embedded system fully capable of running applications, including a webserver, communicating with other devices over WiFi, and even powering its own wireless network. But enough with the chatter: can we make this device do more than what it was designed to?

Does SD card speed make a real difference or is it the internal memory buffer http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7809/does-sd-card-speed-make-a-real-difference-or-is-it-the-internal-memory-buffer Fri, 16 Aug 2013 16:34:05 +0000 disneytoy 7809@/talks/discussions Hello!

This is regarding the GH-2. Stills not video. I usually shoot RAW plus large JPG. I like the Dynamic B&W of the Jpg, but like the color option of having the raw. I also shoot HDR, panos and sometimes fashion. So, I shoot a lot of consecutive images. I'm often faced with the GH-2 preventing me from shooting until it writes to the card from the internal memory. In fact, doing a 5 exposure HDR, sometimes it will hold me at 4, and I have to wait for the red light to go out before I can complete the bracket.

So, I was wondering even if I use the fastest SD card out there? Once the internal memory fills up, won't I still be faced with the RED light? Clearly a faster card will be written to in less time. But are any cards fast enough, that I could do continuous shooting without stopping?

And I'm not talking about 5 frames a second type shooting, But just regular single click, click, click?

I currently have San Disk 16gb ULTRA SDHC 30mb/s San Disk 64gb ULTRA SDXC 30mb/s (I think I have a 45mb/s card as well)

If someone can do a test for me.

If you have a GH-2 and a San Disk xxGB 95mb/s card. Could you count how many continuous exposures you can get before the buffer fills and stops you? And that would be RAW+large JPG.

Please report back.

I'm thinking the number of exposures before getting the red light will be the same.

Example, I was in a Church taking a handheld Pano. a good 15 exposures. Everytime the buffer filled, I'd have to freeze in place until I could take the next 1-2 frames freeze etc.

Thank you!

The reason is that UHS-1 uses 3 extra pins to transfer data, totally 4 bits. So, if your camera does not implement UHS-1 mode, it cannot use 3 extra pins and will use the traditional SD 1 bit mode. The data transfer rate will drop obviously.
