Not going to be shooting for long takes.

Speeding up your SD card (the unexpected way) http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2134/speeding-up-your-sd-card-the-unexpected-way Sat, 28 Jan 2012 21:42:01 +0000 duartix 2134@/talks/discussions Short story: My SD Card got a speed upgrade from stock and it cost me NOTHING!

Long story:

Bought a Samsung SD 16gb Plus Class 10 (this kind: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-16GB-Class-Extreme-Speed/dp/B00569J5JC/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1327802435&sr=8-5)

First thing I did was format it at 32K and 64K clusters for optimal speed and benchmark it. Speed gains from 64K were marginal, and IIRC the camera didn't like them and defaulted to 32K if I formatted in camera.

Benchmarked the card at almost ~15MB with 16MB files and ~13MB with 8MB files. "Nice!" - I thought, 15MBs is better than Class 10 and since it's 120Mbps it will hold some pretty aggressive patches for a card that costs 20€.

But one day as I was moving FW from my laptop to the card I noticed the transfer speed was way below 10MBs! :( This started a heavy series of benchmarks that were all flawed (basically the problem was that the internal SD reader on the laptop is speed limited) but that had an unexpected development in my struggle to get the benchmark back to the speed I knew it was capable of. In that series of events I used some SSD reasoning "It's flash memory, I should try a Full Format not a Quick Format."

When I returned home and benchmarked the card on the external reader where I originally got almost 15MBs, this is what I got:

I don't know if this will transport to other brands, but I know I'll be doing this every now and then....

Reading images from an unformatted memory card (gh2) http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/1891/reading-images-from-an-unformatted-memory-card-gh2 Sat, 31 Dec 2011 20:58:39 +0000 SuperRoach 1891@/talks/discussions
While I was camping I got some nice footage and pictures with a 64gig (one of the SDXC ones for future) sd card in a Panasonic GH2.

I'll admit I was a bit stupid in just putting the memory card in, and snapping photos.

Currently the camera is reading the videos and images taken fine, so there would be no damage.

However plugging it into a Windows 7 based machine brings up a forced "please format this card" message. Is there an alternative way to mount it, or otherwise read the data before I properly format it?]]>

I wanted to know why, so I opened them up.

Card 1: works with Terraquake. Uses 2x Toshiba TC58NVG5D2FTA00 IC's.
Card 2: Does not work with Terraquake. Uses 1x Toshiba TH58NVG6D2FTA20 IC.

I couldn't find datasheets on either though. I believe the TH prefix says that there are two dies in a single package, but am unsure.

Looking at some of the specs for similar part numbers, I think the TH series has larger page and block sizes.

Now I really wanna bring the laptop everywhere... but it's been hassle to bring ext hdd. So I decided to install 2nd hdd. 1TB 9.5mm hdd :)

Since I have a unibody mbp, I ordered one from maxupgrades.com. Definitely overpriced but I don't wanna take a chance on a cheaper one from ebay this time.

This guy has a blog about it and an installation video. http://abbyandwin.net/blog/2011/08/19/optibay-kit-from-maxupgrades-com/

My desktop computer doesn't have USB 3.0 ports. Transfer speed with old Hama USB 2.0 SD card reader was pretty slow.

Test file to transfer: 3,95GB compressed video
SD card: Sandisk Extreme Pro 32GB 45MB/s

USB 2.0
-------
Write: 6min 36seconds
Read: 6min 39seconds

Then I bought this http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150601052134 USB 3.0 reader. Cost only ~18$ including shipping. And for USB 3.0 SD card reader I chose Transcend TS-RDF8K http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220851168839 . Cost ~23$ including shipping.

USB 3.0
-------
Write: 1min 51seconds
Read: 1min 34seconds

I'm happy with the results. Test setup computer's SSD is OCZSSD2-2VTXE120G.]]>
3.5" HD Photo Bank? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/820/3.5-hd-photo-bank Wed, 31 Aug 2011 12:15:00 +0000 _gl 820@/talks/discussions http://tinyurl.com/44wg22n), but I've owned one before and it failed after a few months, I have no faith in them. Most don't support SDHC either, and they're typically ultra-slow, meaning it could take 5 hours or more to download a full 32GB SD card - useless.

I'm already carrying a 2TB 3.5" drive with important backups, so it makes sense to find something that can do the same job with it. I only need this when travelling, and only when I'm back at the hotel, so I don't need battery power. I don't have a laptop or netbook, and buying/carrying one just for that is overkill.

Has anyone ever seen anything like it? The only thing I've found so far are 3.5" Media Player enclosures with card readers and/or USB OTG (so you can plug in a USB reader): http://tinyurl.com/3as4hxl

That would work, problem is you probably still need a screen to initiate the copying as they don't tend to have displays? I have a cam monitor so that's OK, but still a pain. And some of these enclosures are far too big, I'd like to find the smallest one possible.

Any ideas?]]>

Shipping was extra I think &9.95. So $60.00 US dollars. Make sure to download the drivers for your PC or Mac. The drivers were not installed for me. I'm on a Mac. There is one for $29.95 but it doesn't except the the faster cards from my understanding.

USB 3.0 docks http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/303/usb-3.0-docks Wed, 29 Jun 2011 00:36:43 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 303@/talks/discussions
Now I want to tell you about external HDD dock I use.

It has cryptic name - AGESTAR 3UBTFT.

image

Uses USB 3.0 as interface.
Very quiet.
Speed is above 100MB/sec on large files.
If you are shooting big amount of video, bunch of 2Tb or 3Tb disks and such dock can be complete solution.

Not bad for < $30 product.
