Description: (Truesense KAI-02150 CCD sensor, global shutter, 1920 x 800 pixel, 25/45 fps, other resolutions and frame rates are possible Recording software saves Cinema DNG files, 12 bit RAW Fujinon tv-lens 12,5 - 75 mm/f1.2) Here is what he had to say: "I have calculated it to ca. ISO 200, with gain it is good up to ISO 800. Sensor is 2/3" optical format, image area 10.56 x 5.94 mm, 5.5 µm pixel size. Captures up to 95 fps at 1280 x 544 pixels, sensor has 1920 x 1080 pixel"

If this pans-out right It can be a great tool to use in conjunction with the lovely Blackmagic Cinema Camera, or soon to come Pocket Cinema Camera. Let me know what you guy's think about this development.

Will the BMPCC + Lumix 12-35 be an adequate kit? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7005/will-the-bmpcc-lumix-12-35-be-an-adequate-kit Sun, 19 May 2013 14:03:58 +0000 theconformist 7005@/talks/discussions Pros and cons? My biggest fear is the lens itself seems to produce very "video-ish" quality, but I suspect under the right conditions (controlled environment, proper lighting) it may be able to achieve a more cinematic image... The lack of cine-lens features, and in fact the inclusion of "anti" cine features like focus by wire and electronic aperture are problematic but not deal breakers... I don't really mind that the lens isn't that fast - I don't care for very shallow DOF, though low-light shooting may be an issue... I just particularly like the fact that this lens would cover pretty much all the focal lengths useful on the BMPCC. What do you guys think?

Rough translation made by one of our members:

We had so many problems with our video cameras lately. They are all outdated and price is hugely overblown. Look at our TV business, it is barely alive. Are we wanting to follow? We don't have much for uncoming NAB exhibition. And as I know one of competitors is preparing absolutely revolutional and cheap 4K resolution camera to be released at NAB. And it shoots this in raw. Imagine, 4K raw camera available for everyone! And where are we standing? Terrible!

Some specs leaked in last week on different sites:

  • 4Kx4K square oversized m43 sensor
  • 13 stops dynamic range
  • Raw recording to external SSD
  • 120fps, but on what resolution?
  • No screen
  • Priced below BMC

  1. No XLRs (despite audio inputs are balanced)
  2. No phantom power on audio input. Not good for condenser mikes.
  3. 30fps maximum only, many like 60fps now, and 120fps becomes new standard for pro cameras already
  4. Uncompressed only option for RAW requiring big investments
  5. SSD connectors are completely unsuitable for frequent insertion
  6. Long and complicated RAW workflow
  7. Required investments in backup solutions due to big file sizes
  8. Absent HDMI connection, so you need to buy new and much more costly monitor or EVF.

70mm Digital Raw.

The camera will feature on-board recording via an SSD, perhaps 1.5Tb

It will feature a Titanium body, and should be a couple of pounds lighter than the Arri Alexa.

It is expected to record DNxHD and ProRes, in RGB and maybe RAW.

The sensor can be windowed down to 42mm and 35mm formats.

They’re keen to allow a wide range of metadata to be captured and recorded onboard, making it “the VFX department’s dream camera“

They are also looking to develop a new open codec format

We’re expecting to see a prototype in the next six months…

BMCC on a budget, what is needed? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5523/bmcc-on-a-budget-what-is-needed Tue, 18 Dec 2012 22:41:43 +0000 christianhubbard 5523@/talks/discussions A lot of people talk about how much the BMCC will cost, so I wanted to give a little run down on budget options. What is NEEDED?

2 SSDs (switch one out when it's full) - 109$ each for 120g models via newegg. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211588

1 Battery (any reason why you can use the tekkeon batteries? - 120$ from BH.

Thats it.

Want to have a more professional rig? Well if you don't already own one, you can buy cheap one off of PV deals for 100$, and then buy the 50$ adapter from CPM tools for the Tekkeon batteries.

Boom, Cheap BMCC bundle for 3340usd, minimum. Or if you're ambitious, another 150$. oh, and you should probably already have a tripod. if not, WHY?

Mind you, this is the bare MINIMUM one would need to shoot.

Consolidated Specs for Cinema Cameras with RAW http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5270/consolidated-specs-for-cinema-cameras-with-raw Thu, 22 Nov 2012 05:29:39 +0000 thepalalias 5270@/talks/discussions I went through the list of topics in Raw Cameras and did not see a list like this, so since I had been compiling some for the blog I posted today at http://www.pasadenapulse.net, I thought I would put them here so that others can add to it (and correct any errors that are statistically likely to have been added. :)

These cameras all have (or are slated to have soon) RAW recording capability in some form.

Max Horizontal Resolution

  • BMCC: 2.4K
  • Arri Alexa: 2.88K max horizontal resolution.
  • Sony FS-700: 4K expandable with 1.92K at release.
  • Sony F55: 4K max horizontal resolution (4096x2160).
  • Canon C500: 4K max horizontal resolution (4096x2960 RAW max).
  • Sony F65: Greater than 4K.*
  • Red One/Red One MX: 4.5K max horizontal resolution.
  • Red Scarlet: 5K max horizontal resolution (but 4K max horizontal resolution at 24/25/30P).
  • Red Epic: 5K max horizontal resolution.
  • Red Dragon: 6K max horizontal resolution. Unreleased.

*As for the Sony F65, I don't want to get into that can of worms. With it's 20MP sensor, let's just say "easily 4K, probably more in the future" but not get too far into it other than to say that the current recording format is 4K.

Cameras with Global Shutter

  • Sony F55

Max Framerates at 4K and Highest Resolution (with the color depth recorded)

  • BMCC: Cannot do 4K. Max 30P 12-bit log at 2.5K.
  • Arri Alexa: Cannot do 4K. Max 60P 12-bit log at 2.88K in 16x9 mode.
  • Red One MX: 30P 12-bit at both 4.5K and 4K.
  • Canon C500: 60P 10-bit at 4K.
  • Sony FS-700: Upcoming 60P at unspecified RAW bit-depth in 4K.
  • Sony F55: 60P 16-bit linear 4K.
  • Sony F65: 120P 16-bit linear 4K.
  • CMV12000: 90P 12-bit or 150P 10-bit at 4K.
  • Red Scarlet: 30P 16-bit at 4K. 12P at 5K.
  • Red Epic: 150P 16-bit at 4K. 120P 16-bit at 5K.
  • Red Dragon: Unknown 4K (expected to meet or exceed Red Epic at all framerates but guaranteed 120P at 5K). At least 85P 16-bit at 6K. Unreleased.

Native DR

  • Sony FS-700: Untested in RAW.
  • Red One (not MX): 11.3 stops official.
  • Canon C500: 12 stops official. (Though the highlight roll-off has been garnering praise)
  • BMCC: 13 stops official.
  • Red MX (as used in MX/Scarlet/Epic): 13.5 official. (Some sources measured at under 12 but I'm not invested in one measurement over the other).
  • Arri Alexa: 14 stops official.
  • Sony F55: 14 stops official.
  • Sony F65: 14 stops official.
  • Red Dragon: Over 15 stops official. Unreleased.

And of course, the Red Scarlet, Epic (and upcoming Dragon) support the HDRx mode that some people like and others do not, which is officially specified as increasing dynamic range to 18 stops (with a lot of caveats to go along with it).

It would not have a lens mount but you could add any epic style lens mount for non-electronic control ex. longvalleyequip.com nikon mount at $400

1) 4k RAW: 14,000 (original listed price of 10,000 was a typo) Brain $4000 Recorder $10,000 SSD media $750/256GB

2) 4k Prores: $8,000 Brain: $4000 Recorder $4000 price TBD

3) 1080 Prores: $5500 Brain $4000 Recorder $1500 off the shelf SSD

4) 1080 DNxHD/quicktime MOS: $4500 Brain $4000 Recorder: $500 off the shelf SSD

There would be no option for h.264 and an external battery solution would be required ranging from v mount on the high end to sony batteries on the low end. Also, the low end cameras would all be capable of upgrading to the high end solution for a cost.

All cameras come with a 1 year manufacturers warranty

If this camera delivers, this is going to be my next camera. BlackMagic Design is gong to deliver what RED promised with the original Scarlet announcement. Thunderbolt connector, free Resolve, Touchscreen for metadata entry!

image

This happens when honest companies like BlackMagic Design, which don't have to artificially protect their high-end gear (I am talking about you Sony, Panasonic, Canon) start entering the camera business. If the image quality lives up to the specifications, this is going to be THE camera to get. Sony, Canon, Panasonic won't be happy in that case. The 5D Mark III could do the same but Canon doesn't allow it because of C500/C300. Same for Sony, Panasonic. If BlackMagic delivers, I will respect them so much!

I won't be surprised if BlackMagic Design will launch their own NLE down the road as well.

I've only just started reading about RAW and the DNG format and I guess it seems obvious but RAW is not a standard anything which is why Adobe had to make DNG. Still this DNG does not look the same as the DNG I get from a RW2 converted so maybe DNG will have just as much variance as the Raw files they contain.

Black Magic: Is internal battery complete disaster or reliable solution? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3008/black-magic-is-internal-battery-complete-disaster-or-reliable-solution Wed, 25 Apr 2012 16:53:36 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 3008@/talks/discussions Look at the

http://www.mpoweruk.com/life.htm article

And also in PDF in attachment.

It is easy to see that heat does not help batteries.

As well as full charging (if you undercharge battery it'll live much longer and won't drop capacity so fast).

image

image

And it looks like in BM Cinema Camera we have both of this issues.
Battery is made small, so it is charged to full (hence it'll have very fast capacity drop) and it'll be made worse by temperature modes. Camera will make battery perform worse and battery in it's turn during charging will induce heat, and, hence, increased noise.

Opinion and questions regarding RAW cinema cameras http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4253/opinion-and-questions-regarding-raw-cinema-cameras Wed, 15 Aug 2012 13:09:50 +0000 SAS 4253@/talks/discussions Hello everyone. I am completely new to this forum as well as cinematography and video cameras...

I have a GoPro HD Hero 2 at the moment & I'm starting film school this September here in the UK.

I know and understand the very basic principles of sound and audio for film and TV, having studied this at college and read many books as well as finding things out online & practising using audio equipment.

I've been looking at these forthcoming "Cinema" RAW video cameras that, after post processing & colour grading, seem to be able to produce what looks to me like images almost on a par with the top of the line Arri Alexa models, and for a fraction of the price...

I wanted to ask you all what you make of these cameras and whether or not you think me considering an investment in one of these (perhaps just before Xmas 2013) is a good plan as a student at my level...

For example, I have been looking at the Black Magic Design Cinema Camera & the Kine Raw s16 details online.

Do they actually do what they say on the tin? i.e produce images of a cinematic quality in the hands of the right people?

Both of these will be within reach for me price wise next year if current speculation on price range is anything to go by. (I have read that when the BMDCC is delivered to intentional customers, it will have cost them roughly £2,150... and the KineRaw is supposedly going to cost less than that...

What I am getting at is, from what you have gathered, do you think either camera will be worth it if the manufacturers do deliver on quality and price?

Thanks for your time, I hope this isn't a duplicate thread.

Listen, seriously, thanks again to anyone who responds to this. I appreciate your time and effort helping out a newbie like me.

BM camera hardware modification question (technical genius needed) http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4105/bm-camera-hardware-modification-question-technical-genius-needed Tue, 31 Jul 2012 20:10:29 +0000 peterosinski 4105@/talks/discussions Hello,

Originally I had completely written off the black magic cinema camera as it did not meet my personal needs but after some investigating I have decided otherwise. I have decided that modification will be the best route for me.

The idea that I had would be to replace the front of the Black Magic cinema camera with another plate that has a m 4/3 mount. There is a company I have worked with in the past that is known as "the photographers machinist". They make custom parts for all sorts of cameras and given existing projects they have had I don't see this being a problem for them.

Now to the question. If the lens mount control connections were disconnected from the front plate of the camera without touching or damaging any of the other internals should i expect there to be any problems with the function of the camera? Normally I would just be mounting my nikon lenses to the camera via nikon to ef adapter, which is a dumb mount that allows for manual iris adjustment. If I replaced the front of the camera couldn't I expect the camera to react just as it would if it had any other dumb lens (although this time it would be dumb lens and dumb mount)

Methods to work with HFS discs on PC

HFS+ for Windows® 9.0
Experience total communication between Mac & Windows with the industry’s highest performing file system technology

Paragon HFS+ for Windows is the only solution that provides full read-write access to HFS+/HFSX partitions on any type of disks (APM, GPT, MBR) under most of Windows versions! Access Mac-formatted partitions in Windows systems with the fastest and most stable HFS driver on the market.

http://www.paragon-software.com/home/hfs-windows/ , cost $20

JHFSPlus

Quite weird Java thing (and read only). But free.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/jhfsplus/

MacDrive

Seamless access to files on virtually any Mac-formatted disk from Windows.

  • Access Mac disks in Windows
  • Partition, format and repair disks

TransMac

Commercial toold supporting all operations, including formatting.

HFS Explorer

HFS Explorer is a Windows file browser that allows you to access your Mac hard disks and disk partitions through a program window. HFS Explorer can't mount Mac drives in Windows Explorer or do anything particularly fancy, but it works great if you just need an easy way to read and write to your Mac drives in Windows. Most importantly, HFS Explorer is free. It hasn't been updated since 2008, but the HFS+ format hasn't really changed since then, so compatibility isn't an issue

APERTUS AXIOM - 4K RAW OPEN SOURCE/GLOBAL SHUTTER CAMERA http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3860/apertus-axiom-4k-raw-open-sourceglobal-shutter-camera- Tue, 10 Jul 2012 20:51:14 +0000 Ian_T 3860@/talks/discussions In the advent of new cinema cameras coming out this one looks very promising. This new-kid-on-the-block is supposedly going to have 15 Stops of dynamic range. It's another crowd funded project but seems to be legit. The specs are:

4K Resolution

Super 35mm Sensor

Global Shutter

Up to 15 Stops DR

High Speed at Full Resolution

Cinema DNG Raw Recording

http://apertus.org/en/node/152

From their site:

"We have actually been rather careful and secretive not to release too much information about the new camera on the Internet as we do not want to follow the unfortunately quite commmon practice of how other companies announce their products: they just promise you whatever you want to hear and a couple of years later they admit that this product is not ever going to see the light of the day. So we made sure that what we announce is solid and well thought through. But still a word of precaution: We will need your help to create Axiom, only if we manage to succeed with our kickstarter campaign we will be able to afford the development. Currently we are still working on preparing the material for the campaign, unfortunately its taking longer than we hoped it would - stay tuned."

The site needs to give more info on this project but I say if it happens to come in "well" under $10,000 like they say then I can see this kicking Red, Canon and Sony in the proverbial behind. What says you?

BlackMagic: Power solutions http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2995/blackmagic-power-solutions Tue, 24 Apr 2012 16:51:16 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 2995@/talks/discussions As we all know BM camera use internal battery, that, I think is bad design solution. So, for any real shooting you need external battery connected to power input. Most of this solutions will be using 12V output.

I'll be adding to this topic all suitable solutions that I know.

Some of our deal partners manufacture suitable solutions and I also hope to have them soon on deals in special kits aimed to future BM camera users.

But anyway. People ask for this, so let this topic be.

My personal list:

  1. m43 mount.
  2. Removal of integrated monitor.
  3. Removal of internal battery.
  4. Removal of both audio ports and headphone output, leaving only one digital audio input.
  5. Complete removal of Thunderbolt port and replace it with USB 3.0.
  6. Removal of internal SSD slot
  7. Removal of HD-SDI port.
  8. High speed Wi-Fi supporting distant monitoring via iOS and Android devices. Same support via USB port.
  9. Sell this for $999 :-)
