Best budget hacked G/GH/GF-series camera? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12335/best-budget-hacked-gghgf-series-camera Sat, 07 Feb 2015 16:12:18 +0000 Skittles95 12335@/talks/discussions Hi, I'm on very tight budget with desire to buy two cameras, one more professional for me (video product reviews, artistic filmmaking) and one more compact for my little sister (learning to shoot good stills, some video also). We will use FD prime lenses with manual aperture rings on adapter.

I have about 280$ for my camera and 180$ for sisters camera. We're talking about cam bodies only.

There are so many good budget Panasonic cameras with hacks, that I'm confused. Used hacked GH1 seems the best option for me (am I right?), but I'm struggling with decision between hacked GF1 (manual video control, worse IQ) and hacked GF3 (auto video controls, but with manual lenses and better IQ) for my sis. Any suggestions that will help making decision?

Thanks in advance :)

GH4 in Low Light http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12405/gh4-in-low-light Tue, 17 Feb 2015 07:56:55 +0000 RRRoger 12405@/talks/discussions What settings do you use in low light?

Is higher frame rate or faster shutter better for action? I seem to have maxed out my camera at 1600 ISO as the detail becomes obscure above that. I shoot unattended in a poorly lit Bowling Alley for 1-3 hours at a time. My 12-35 is set for f/2.8 I've tried 4k but usually go for 1080P60 at 120s with better results. Would shooting 4k 30P with a 120s shutter work better yet?

GH4 EVF white screen fault http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12305/gh4-evf-white-screen-fault Tue, 03 Feb 2015 03:48:05 +0000 dial 12305@/talks/discussions I was shooting around the house for fun when suddenly the GH4's EVF went white. The flip out screen is still fine.

I turned it off, removed the battery, waited, etc, still the same issue. It kind of looks like a ribbon cable is loose as there are still some very faint gray outlines on the screen showing detail. I have attached a photo but it's hard to see what it actually looks like.

Has anyone else heard of or seen this issue? Perhaps it's just a one off fault, either way I'll contact Panasonic in the morning and see what they say.

GH2 SD card slot won't lock the card http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12186/gh2-sd-card-slot-wont-lock-the-card Thu, 15 Jan 2015 23:41:14 +0000 Riker 12186@/talks/discussions I'm pretty bummed about this shit right now. 2014 was by far my most unproductive year ever, I think I can write down the days how many times I've actually took my GH2 out to shoot something, it just kept sitting in the bag all the time.

Yesterday I went out to shoot, got home, took out the SD card and replaced it with the formatted one, but out of the blue, the card kept popping out. The whatever mechanism held it/locked it in place, it doesn't anymore.

I think I know the answer but I'll put the question out there anyway - is this something that can be fixed?

Thanks :)

PS - I've tried with other SD cards I have, same result. But if I push the card in and close the slot hatch, it seems to work, the camera can write to the card. Not exactly sure how much of a solution is this, the doors are flimsy enough and it takes one wrong touch to pull them open.

I wonder why Shane Hurlbut think the camera is a broadcast video camera and don't have that filmic feel. And it has bad skin tones. He like the 5D mk2 better. https://www.hurlbutvisuals.com/blog/2014/09/panasonic-lumix-dmc-gh4/

I think he shuld use Cinema V and not the Cinema D.

What I have seen the camera performs really good hand have filmic feel.

Shooting Sports + Slow Motion (LX100 and GX7) http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12116/shooting-sports-slow-motion-lx100-and-gx7 Tue, 06 Jan 2015 10:24:09 +0000 sgreszcz 12116@/talks/discussions Hi there,

I'm going to take some video of my brother when he races in the World Cup of Skeleton (where they throw themselves headfirst down an ice chute at up to 140 km/h). I own a Panasonic LX100 and a newly-purchased GX7. I'm planning on using the LX100 for the wider shots and when I want to rely on the detail that the 4k brings. I plan on using the GX7 with my longer u4/3 lenses (like P35-100/2.8) and hope to be able to use the DTC functionality as well.

I have a few questions about techniques and settings needed to shoot fast moving sport, using 50fps (in the GX7), and potentially getting more slow-motion with something like Twixtor to interpolate frames.

Normally, I try to follow the 180 degree shutter rule for motion blur, and until now I've only had a camera that shoots 24/25/30 fps so I've kept the shutter speed fixed at 1/50 especially when indoors with 50Hz lighting.

I would like to try to record some of the bobsled and skeleton starts with the intent of slowing them down in post. The GX7 has 50 fps. If I record in 50 fps, should I be setting the shutter at 1/125 or should I be using something higher for sharper image capture, especially if I intend on using something like twixtor to make it look like even slower motion?

As far as shooting at 50 fps on the GX7 (28 Mbps), is there any loss in image quality compared to shooting at 25 fps (20 Mbps). Is there any reason why I shouldn't always shoot at 50 fps just in case I want to slow anything down in the future?

Thank you for advise!

Decent & affordable audio solution for the GH3 / G6. Shure SM58? Or a shotgun? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/12048/decent-affordable-audio-solution-for-the-gh3-g6.-shure-sm58-or-a-shotgun Sun, 28 Dec 2014 08:50:54 +0000 Stab 12048@/talks/discussions Hi,

I shoot a lot of weddings and I have to find an affordable solution to record the speaker during the ceremony. At first I was considering a shotgun mic as I know that it works well from experience. But now I was thinking about other options. What about a dynamic mic like a Shure SM58, going in directly into the GH3 / G6? Would the signal be 'hot' enough? Or wouldn't that really work out? Of course we would place the mic close to the speaker. I also have a Zoom R8 multitrack recorder that works on batteries. I'm sure it would sound great with the SM58 into the Zoom R8, but would be more of a hassle.

Anyone has experience with plugging in a dynamic mic directly into a GH3 / GH4 / G6? And how does it sound? Other options?

GH4 for theatrical feature films? http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/11909/gh4-for-theatrical-feature-films Fri, 05 Dec 2014 22:34:21 +0000 DouglasHorn 11909@/talks/discussions It looks like the GH4 is a big step forward, but is it ready for theatrical feature films--even low budget, limited releases?

I know it's a big advance on the GH2--which I think is pretty amazing for $600 but which I still wouldn't use on a feature even after Upstream Color. But if it has advanced enough, there's a lot to like about the GH4--low cost for high quality crash cams, low weight for aerials and Movi-type work. 4K, etc.

It you were helming a 500K-1M feature that had a tight BTL production budget but also high expectations in footage quality, would the GH4 be your choice?

Two clips for each camera. Both in auto white balance mode. First, going from 5600K (daylight) to 3500K (incandescent), then going from incandescent to daylight. The first camera for each sequence is the GH4.

You can see that the GH4 AWB never compensates fully under incandescent light. The LX100 nails it under both lighting conditions. The speed of adjustment is similar for the two cameras.

The GH4 uses the Lumix 12-35mm f2.8 lens. The LX100 lens is extended so that the f is 2.8. For both ev was set to -1/3.
