Views from Talent & Tech - Chemical film is finally dead & the GH2 rates close to the big dogs! http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3816/views-from-talent-tech-chemical-film-is-finally-dead-the-gh2-rates-close-to-the-big-dogs Sat, 07 Jul 2012 14:54:29 +0000 Blackout 3816@/talks/discussions Long time no see guys. I realized this is more the place for it as the old dogs are very biased over there. I took a bit of a break from the film world to attend to some pressing needs, but I figured I'd update you and rant a little for the old school and newbs alike:

I'm an imagination person first. There's a theme park carnival universe in my head / heart - then I'm an an actor, then a writer, then a director, then a DP and then an editor (I think... the orders of those things switch around a lot - and I'm not including music or broadcasting or hosting which I did a lot of too).

Somehow after or before or quantum sideways of that I have something to do with the Thrice Great Okapi but let's not get into that now. Why must you readers always distract me? Oh wait, you haven't read this yet. It's me who's distracting me. So sorry, let me get on with it:

As the title says. Digital Film Making Finally Beats Chemical Film Making.

I just viewed Prometheus. This article is not so much about the movie plot or merits. It was OK. OK it was a little better than OK... I'd say 3 stars out of 4 for you geeks out there. It was dark and highly predictable in that same way that so many sci fi movies are with their ominous shots of Halo like activity that we've seen so many times before but it was a fairly good movie none the less and the visuals are amazing!

The focus here is that it was shot, edited, and projected entirely digitally. No chemical film. Remember when CDs had AAD, DAD, DAA OR DDD? Well this was the DDD of motion pictures (and then in 3D too so really it's almost DDD+3D). I viewed it in 3D on dual 8K digital projectors from a digital source (it was shot on Red Epic digital cameras with Zeiss Ultra Prime and Angenieux Optimo Lenses) and I was so impressed that it led me to write this column that will only be appreciated by hard core film or motion picture buffs, fellow film makers, or total and absolute techy nerds.

I apologize to my regular 'wacky guy with a hat" audience about the extreme levels of techy geek I am about to enter but I am compelled to write on this for my film making friends. We really need to change that terminology to 'motion picture' or 'movie' making, because old school film making is finally really dead and unnecessary. OOPS I just blew my whole article away! That was a huge spoiler... oh well ...crap...so anyway I thought I'd give the above disclaimer, and now having done that... here we go!

Chemical film is finally dead. Let me make it clear I don't say this with any sort of hatred of chemical film like it is some witch or beast that needed to be slayed. I LOVED the look of it, but it was/is just way too expensive. People who had the money liked this fact as it keep them in some sort of elitist control club. I did not. I used to have fantasies of stealing panavision film equipment when I found out they only rented and didn't sell film cameras and related equipment. I say this as a LOVER of the motion picture 24p chemical film look who has been on a loooong (add as many o's as you need to make that long really looooong) quest to make movies that looked like what...well... movies looked like... well.. at the movies!!!

I was not once ever satisfied with my 60i vhs or 8mm or hi8 or super v or even later with supposed masters work on the digitally shot and digitally projected movies from the Star Wars fiascos to the IMAX lies (especially in 3D) until now.

Watching Prometheus on dual 8K projectors was the first time I could sit closer than mid row and be absolutely immersed in the entire film without seeing the artifacts of digital film making or 3D problems. The picture was as detailed as I have ever seen - other than some outstanding real (chemical film) IMAX 3D films - but nearly the same, and there were no pixels, the brightness was excellent, the 3D did not flicker. I mean seriously - holy s*%t it finally works! Give someone a gold star sticker!!!

China is no longer investing in US dollar treasury bonds -- instead, they seem to be heavily into gold. Japan is also in some serious trouble with their debt -- and we all know that the Euro has the sick "men" of Europe, with the PIIGS (Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece, Spain).

This is starting to appear like a game of "pass the parcel" for debt, with the loser being.... everyone.

The Honor was on special last week at DSE for $AUD229.00. But when I asked the staff about speed and responsiveness they looked at me blankly. My web searches have been as blank as those pubescent staff's stares.

It turns out the Honor can take a full second for a single app to load.

When I talk to anybody about phones they want to convince me to buy a brand or an OS. I don't want to know which phone or OS has the fastest graphic, but how a phone can be fast. I want to talk CPUs, multi-threading and especially GPUs.

It should be a blast, especially the opening. I might be baking muffins for consumption on the occasion (but you didn't hear that from me). Apple oatmeal cinnamon raisin muffins (when in doubt, bribe with food, right?)

The show will be open for the week, 10-5 every day from the opening night on the 30th thru until Dec. 7th.

Thu, 22 Nov 2012 00:58:22 +0000 willianaleman 5269@/talks/discussions The trick to simulate a cinemascope, 2.35:1 in the GH2 requires to mark the external top and bottom of LCD with a 3M tape or mobile screen guard protection to frame the subject during recording in a way that matches the crop to be done in post to achieve the desired look.

It would be helpful if a patch would add an extra moveable line to the Custom Guide, which from factory, the GH2 brings only one. The addition of the line would help in marking internally the top of the LCD and with the second one the bottom. Hackers, would be this possible?

Here is the wished two lines and GH2 factory (single) Custom Guide.

Google's Image Search: Re-Design Hurts Desktop Users and Puts Critical Functionality on Vacation http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5200/googles-image-search-re-design-hurts-desktop-users-and-puts-critical-functionality-on-vacation Wed, 14 Nov 2012 19:05:29 +0000 thepalalias 5200@/talks/discussions If you've used Google Image Search in the last year, you've probably gotten used to having a lot of options available to you on the left. Options you could get to quickly and easily, like being able to specify images large than a given size.

But a week ago, Google decided to launch a re-designed interface that hid most options, required more clicks, and move them to the top where they could only be used with an animated reveal (that you had to wait for) in order to make the desktop based image search more consistent with mobile use.

Worse still, the have "temporarily" removed the ability to specific "larger than" or "exact size" image options when searching. Now you can only specify three vague categories of size at best, and even that takes several clicks!

Over a 170 people have posted complaints in the last week in the official Google group at https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/websearch/xcv50_kJ9Pc/ApEqKbCI8u4J but it may take a lot more for Google to get the idea people do NOT like having functionality randomly removed for no apparent reason and that desktop users do NOT like having their functionality impacted just to make things "consistent" with mobile users.

If you have Twitter or Facebook and agree, please share this post. https://twitter.com/PerLichtman/status/268864289429929984

If you want to let Google know directly, please post to the official thread. https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/websearch/xcv50_kJ9Pc/ApEqKbCI8u4J

World energy supples, water too. http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5176/world-energy-supples-water-too. Mon, 12 Nov 2012 11:56:36 +0000 brianluce 5176@/talks/discussions Some notes on a frequent topic around here.

It is official. The US will overtake Saudi Arabia to become the world's top oil producer by 2017. The International Energy Agency (IEA) said in its world outlook for 2012 this morning that the US will be a net exporter of gas by 2020, with all the vast implications of abundant cheap gas for its chemical, plastics, glass, and steel industries. "The United States, which currently imports around 20 per cent of its total energy needs, becomes all but self-sufficient in net terms – a dramatic reversal of the trend seen in most other energy importing countries," it said. This is entirely due to the shale and gas revolution. North America as a whole will become a significant net exporter. People were too quick to write off America after the Carter Malaise of the 1970s, and they have been too quick again after the subprime bubble (now largely cleared). As Adam Smith said, there is a lot of ruin in a great nation. Saudi Arabia will quickly fade as swing force in global energy markets unless it stops gobbling up its own output with such careless abandon. It currently charges 14 cents a litre for petrol and seven cents for diesel at the pump. They give it away. They should copy to Abu Dhabi and switch to solar power pronto for air conditioning, freeing up oil for exports. Whether or not the world can supply enough oil to feed the Chinese dragon depends on Iraq. If it all goes well, output will jump from around 2 million barrels a day (b/d) to 8 million by 2035. It if goes really well, output could reach 10 million. If all this turns out to be wishful thinking, the world is stuffed. The biggest "new supply" over the next quarter century is energy efficiency. That is worth a Saudi Arabia and a half. Allegedly. A few things struck me: * Coal has provided half the entire growth in world energy supply over the last decade, much more than renewables. * Total investment in oil and gas alone this year is (estimated) $619 billion. It shows the sheer scale. * Total oil output will be less than 100 million b/d by 2035. This is not that much higher than this year at 87 million. This is Plateau Oil in all but name, yet the industrial revolutions of China and India will continue apace, and the nuclear industry has just taken a huge blow. More coal I guess, and windmills. The 688-page report – which I am not at liberty to publish online – is full of fascinating details. The clearest message is that water shortages in large parts of the world are the chief constraint on energy and power. Cooling a coal power plant without water is not easy, and solar parks are very thirsty. Yes, China has the world's biggest shale gas reserves at 36 trillion cubic metres, but much of it is in places like the Tarim Basin in Xinjiang with "severe water scarcity". Look at this chart (taken from the IEA report, page 518, figure 17.9) Some 65pc of China's water use is for irrigation, and 23pc for industry – mostly in coal production. Notice how much of the coal industry is in areas with water troubles. Non-renewable aquifers are being depleted very fast. Under the latest five-year plan China is diverting rivers equal to the Tigris and Euphrates combined to supply the dry belt. Water will have to be rationed much more severely by price, as will electricity. That will be an extra cost/tax, a loss of competitive advantage. Ditto for India. I was told a couple of years ago by Cheng Siwei – then head of China's green energy drive – that the country's economic growth over recent years has been negative if you adjust for eco-damage and exhaustion of non-renewable resources. This will soon become a tangible cost. Water-adjusted GDP may yet become a vogue term.

My first reaction just came out the first pictures is that it looks like when you combine the GH2 or GH1 with old lenses for its look and color, but the texture of the film different though but not as radical.

I think what Coppola to see shots of the GH2 was somewhat familiar with this movie great unknown but which he felt so proud. I'd love to ask him about it, but that is almost impossible.

Excuse me if this thread its trivial and offtopic, but wanted to share this impression.

And I recommend to all screenwriters and directors see this movie frugal, sometimes with limited resources and without a very complex story, but well told and surprising elements can do a good job in this case is a masterpiece.

Attached some pictures of it.

 • Remember what we don't have big team to support site. No admins, paid moderators, etc.
 • Remember what all the guys who offered us help with scripts never did anything. And I have big amount of prototypes and necessary changes list. So, if we'll have resources I'll try to form small team to improve this site.
 • Remember what we hope to form small team for Photokina coverage to cover GH3 and other new amazing things introduced. And without support it'll be just fantasies. Previous exhibitions showed how extremely hard is to get good coverage, as we had no money to pay to people who really had skills.
 • Remember that new cameras are coming, we now have GF5, and G5 and GH3 are not far away.
 • Remember that it is always best to support regularly, even very small amount if you are in economic trouble.

Carbon Stabiliser Issue http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5007/carbon-stabiliser-issue Sat, 27 Oct 2012 10:22:57 +0000 rrsduncan 5007@/talks/discussions Hi there,

Just wanted to make aware a situation I've had with the Wondlan Carbon Stabiliser for those who may be thinking of purchasing one.

I got mine back in April and due to various reasons I've only really used about 3 times for any great length. When I went to use it the other day I noticed that the screw that tightens the plate to the base had stripped and so no longer tightened, essentially rendering the stabiliser an expensive walking stick.

I spoke to Wondlan about it and they've told me I need to buy a new part + shipping. I didn't really that was fair considering it was clearly their issue, I've only been using it as directed and the part has failed. So now I have got them down to just need to paying for shipping (which really still isn't acceptable). What's concerned me more is that it is the same part they are replacing it with, they haven't engineered a better part even though they admitted they knew of the problem. So basically I'm paying for a part that I know is going to fail again.

The reason I'm bringing this to other people's attention is that when I said I wasn't really happy about paying for the same part as it was likely to fail again, the rep told me to 'be more careful'.

Obviously I want to get my stabiliser up and running again but I thought anyone who was thinking about getting one would like to know.
