My first smartphone: the world is 144p

Until some days ago my cel phone was a sony ericson w200. bar design with number buttons, very small screen... great for mp3 and fm radio due to it's own design and because battery last all day long. I also used it's voice recorder a lot... and I never thought about getting a smartphone.

With the advent of wifi dslr, mainly the D5300, I started to think about to get a smartphone to see the live view from the camera when I get one with wifi, so I started a fun research...and I found a cheap used old model with enough screen resolution... and I got it for a low price...

Problems started when I did some attempts to connect using the 3G network, as the seller promissed me it would do, but it just got connection in 2G, and then I found it was a model from other country and it would never work in 3G in my city... so I went back to the seller and got a discount... good deal!

But then this became a "happy problem". Why? Because this makes me realize lots of people are still using 2G connections around the world and youtube just enabled the 144p around 80kbps for mobile slow connections and also pc slow connections.

I saw some videos in 144p in youtube using the 2G smartphone, and it was fun... I just remember the old days when internet was analog fixed phone lines with 24Kbps speed and online videos was just a dream.

(hey you, the three halloween batmen flying around... go away!!! Let me type... LOL ps.: did you run away from an atari emulator? Mouse over you!!!)

The 144p videos are just enough in the smartphone screen to understand and get involved with the video, to imerse in the history telling... and the fun thing: no need to worry about shallow dof...240p and 144p is so small to show shallow dof...

Oh God, if online videos are your goal, yes you must care about dynamic range, resolution, shallow dof, and so on, but this 144p thing just makes me realize the old school lesson: good script and good sound: that's what really matters!!!...

There are researchs on internet (you just need to google it) that shows the average internet speed for computers around the world is 5Mbps (this is enough for youtube 1080p streaming or 720p vimeo streaming, vimeo demands more bit rate than youtube). But 5Mbps are the average speed for big cities, most people outside the big cities are still using 1Mbps or 1,5Mbps for PC connections, just enough for 360p online streaming, and here, the 3G mobile connections are 1Mbps, 500Kbps or 256Kbps, and the 2G mobile connections keeps in 30-200Kbps floating... 4G is coming, 3Gis spreading, but it takes time.

So again: there are lots of things which matters much more than the gear: good actors, good script, good misanscene... clothers, scenarios... and good script and sound. In some 144p videos from youtube I could feel the importance of good actors, because even in 144p videos bad actors are revealed and made me feel it was a so amateur production, not convincing, unpleasant to see.

I showed to a female model I worked with two videos in 6400 iso from T3i camera, one was original, other was denoised and with film grain. I asked her: did you found any difference in the image? which one was more beautiful for you? And she answered: Oh sorry I did not pay attention to this, I was watching the people talking... but as I can remember... I saw no difference... And then I started fo feel frustrated about my image quality pursuing behavior... Story telling... Why worry so much about gear? I can do the same thing with that old GX88U and PV5500 VHS combo from the early 80s...

After sometime using a smartphone I got pretty addicted to it. It is much more pleasant than a computer for internet surfing... and I believe it is better than a tablet also. I just can carry it around to any place, lightweight, and I can put it inside my pocket!!! I am very satisfied with 800x480 screen, but God... there are 1920x1080 screens in expensive smartphones! I think people who work with online videos must take into account the main device for online video viewing are smartphones and 640x360 (360p) in a 5 inch screen is the resolution and size to consider for aestetics.

Some interesting info here on how "Escape From Tomorrow" was planned and shot. They had to be covert...shooting inside Disney World...had to mix footage from a Canon DSLR and a Red....and so on....

JVC GZ-HM430 60P 28mbps hack possible?

I have a JVC GZ-HM430 camcorder that record at 1920x1080, 50i (PAL), 24mbps, AVCHD format. It is possible to change the specs to record at 50P at 28mbps (or at even 36mbps...)? I ask because i knew a software named Ptool, for panasonic camcorders, that enable users to change specs of their camcorders. But any other solutions are good for me, including opening the camcorder, serial programming, etc... Thanks in advance.

I'm wondering if somebody could give me answers about programing tools whereas created code can be used for Windows, Mac and Linux. Adobe and Blackmagic seems to be a good example. They offer same Software for at least Windows and iOS (Mac). Whereas Sony Vegas is only available for Windows or Final Cut Pro for iOS(Mac).

Does Adobe and Blackmagic work with special software like http://www.mono-project.com/Main_Page

Is there a standard cross-platform development tool when it comes to graphic and video.

History would predict, though, that the new camera features of 2018 won’t be anything I will think of, but rather something I haven’t considered at all.

Obviously the micro 4/3 manufacturers are having financial problems, but their products are excellent. If the industry as a whole was stronger I’d think they might be acquired. But I think Panasonic’s overall problems would limit their interest in picking up Olympus’ cameras and Sony has made it pretty clear they’re investing in Olympus’ medical equipment division, not consumer imaging. I wonder if this is the reason Zeiss, which is a member of the 4/3 consortium, decided to develop lenses for Fuji and NEX cameras, but not micro 4/3. They know a lot more about the camera business than I do.

Still, I don’t expect micro 4/3 to vanish in the next couple of years, but I think it might by 2018. Five years is a long time in the camera industry, two to three generations of technology. I should be clear that my misgivings don’t mean I’d have any hesitation to buy a micro 4/3 system today. Chances are absolutely zero that I’ll be shooting the same camera in five years no matter what brand I choose, so if I’m buying today I’ll buy whatever system best meets my needs today.

A Phantom QC crashed on the sidewalk 41st between Park and Madison today, Monday September 30, 2013 at 6:23pm.

It landed less than 10 feet from my head with enough force to destroy the GoPro case and the GP3 inside. I'm sure I'm not the only person who was walking in the area with a wife and young children, but I was the closest.

I have the card from the camera. The image below was taken from a file on it created on September 25th where it looks like the copter was tested from a rooftop in either Queens or Brooklyn. The file from today's flight was corrupted due to the sudden stop, but I will get it fixed and make sure the authorities have it.

I'm about to read a bedtime story to my kids, but without a bit of luck I could be sitting in the ER never knowing them again.

Shit like this ruins it for the rest of us. This post is a reminder to be smart with our toys.

Im new Here and was Looking at buying a Lumix Gh2 and saw all these Hack Videos which blew me away and I have to say Vitaliy what ever you have Done to these cameras looks insane. Although the Gh2/3 look insane I decided to go for the G6 as the guy at the Camera shop told me i should go for it as he just came from a Gh2! so i did!

I am still quite Amateur so still learning about the Lumix Cameras Daily.. I also have a Sigma 19mm 2.8 Lens and ill be looking in to Getting that Cinematic Video look.

Hi everyone,

Recently I have come into possession of several Dell Latitude ST tablets. These are a 10 inch touch screen tablet that was originally sold with Windows 7 as the OS. The specs are fairly modest, 1.5Ghz single core atom processor, 2GB ram, 32GB SSD, built in pen digitizer/touch screen.

With Windows 7 on them they will barely move fast enough to get out of their own way.

I've installed the latest daily build of Lubuntu which recognizes all the hardware and gives me touch and pen support. http://www.lubuntu.net/

There are a few oddities encountered such as with the wireless card as documented here, http://www.mogilowski.net/lang/en-us/2012/02/15/install-ubuntu-on-dell-latitude-st-tablet/

Lubuntu with it's relatively lightweight LXDE desktop runs rather well on these tablets but I'm interested in having an experience more properly designed for the touch interface.

So I've come across the android x86 project, http://www.android-x86.org/

I'm thinking it might be possible, since I can tell what driver packages I need via Lubuntu which is already installed, to compile a custom build with the drivers that I need for my device.

Does anyone have any experience with compiling a custom Android x86 build? I've only just started reading so I'm sure I have LOTS to learn.

I'm also a fan of giving older hardware a renewed lease on life.

Right now my dear wife is using one of the latitude ST's with Lubuntu to check her email and browse the web while chasing the kids around the house.

What about PGP? What about end-to-end encryption services offered by services like Countermail, Neomailbox?
What about OpenVPN? Are all these things of any use?
What sense does it make to use internet services out oft the US that cannot be forced by the NSA to reveal data, when the interception will take place as soon as the data will use the same pipes which their allies and friends will intercept for them?
What sense does it make to encrypt the content of your mail when the most important thing which are the Metadatas are being stored and used by their programms for anything they want to do with it?

Hi every one, When it comes to " Formatting " I am one of the worst offenders here. Not knowing the difference between the heading in an HTML post and the Heading in the beer pint could cause some issues for others to understand your ideas in your posts. I have noticed Vitaliy goes around and corrects the formatting of some posts. Considering the man needs some sleep sometimes, let's help here and take care of some of the basics. Please help out others to explain the GEEK LINGO of the wiki for others. The wiki is available by pressing " Format Help " at the top of reply window.

Here is my first question : How do we FORMAT that nice bulleted list of items and additionally make it indented ?

Please delete if we have this topic. I just couldn't locate it in the search.
