What do you think to this?

The lens costs roughly £100 and I already have the GoPro HDHero 2. I would like to try this but have no experience for skill with modifying electronics... so I would get someone to help me if I tried it...

I think before I buy my GH2H, It might be a good idea to make the most of my existing camera and modify it... Im not sure though as there aren't many videos of actual footage shot with this lens online that I can find.

Any thoughts?

thanks.

I've got a question, do the fellow filmmakers here have any experience with the G series of Carl Zeiss (Contax Yashica - mount)

I've been working with the normal Contax Carl zeiss series for over a 2 years.

And i was wondering if anyone here ownes any of these G lenses and have any test samples, or comparing samples vs other lenses!

Cheers!

Best lens to add to GH2 kit http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/4208/best-lens-to-add-to-gh2-kit Sat, 11 Aug 2012 10:28:09 +0000 mjwhitaker 4208@/talks/discussions Hi guys! I'm a newbie to the GH2 having just upgraded from my hacked GH1 and I'm just now grasping the importance of high quality lenses. The lenses I use mostly right now are the Panny 20mm pancake and Canon FD 50mm 1.4. I've also got a 24mm and a 28mm f2.8, both FD, but I'm realizing they're far too slow for my purposes. I'm ready to upgrade my quality as well as fill in some gaps in my collection. I've been so impressed with the results of the Voigtlander 17mm and 25mm but my questions are:

Are the Voigtlanders too close to my 20mm or are they worth just replacing the 20mm all together?

Or should I spend my money to fill in the gaps with maybe a 35mm or even the 12mm SLR Magic? (which I think I would like despite the mixed reviews I've read)

I have about $1000 and having not a lot of experience with lenses is making it hard for me to decide. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Lenses for 2.35:1 "cropping" http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2311/lenses-for-2.351-cropping Fri, 17 Feb 2012 16:43:06 +0000 stoney 2311@/talks/discussions Suppose 2.35:1 is made by cropping top/bottom of 16:9 clips.

.75x on 16:9 gives roughly 2.35:1 ratio.

Let's say we want 24mm/35mm/50mm/85mm/135mm "like" focal lengths on the anamorphic ratio.

Here goes simple math for GH2 configuration.

  • 24 / 1.83 * .75 = 10mm
  • 35 / 1.83 * .75 = 14mm
  • 50 / 1.83 * .75 = 20mm
  • 85 / 1.83 * .75 = 35mm
  • 135 / 1.83 * .75 = 55mm

Just an idea ;)

So, I thought Id share the info so others can try out their own setups.

"I was doing some thinking about lenses and depth of field and I came up with this comparison chart for a few MFT lenses. What I really wanted to find out was, what are the limitations of shallow depth of field based on aperture, focal length, and most importantly distance from the camera. As well as how can I squeeze my lenses for as much shallow DOF as they can deliver. As I suspected the depth of field become less shallow as you move away from the camera. This is all theoretical, but I found the chart to be really interesting to compare lenses to see where the dramatic DOF fun starts and ends. Id be curious if this actually holds up in the real world."

I just wanted to share the FOV of the Panny 100-300. There was alot of wind so there was excessive RS at the telephoto end. I'll probably do one more of these tests with no wind to see if it lessens the severity of the 'vapor' artifacts. I think that will always be there but it depends on the weather. I don't believe OIS or hacks can take care of it. If you guys know of how to minimize it, please share. I may be asking too much of the cam cause the reach is an insane 1,560mm (w/ETC) :)

I am "studying" Ozu's films realized using only a 50mm; many people believe it's necessary to get a 25 mm on GH2 (due to crop factor) in order to emulate Ozu's look , however I've found this discussion on the net:

50 in academy ratio is actually what a 50 on a GH2 would give... Or almost. A GH2 is the same size as academy matted to 1.78:1 (so horizontally and DoF characteristics are the same, but different vertically). Speaking of which... Hitchcock used a 50 almost exclusively in the 50s and 60s, so a 50 on a GH2 is more or less identical to what you'd get in Psycho.

I feel a bit confused...should I get a 50mm or a 25 mm?

Pentax FA31 Limited Lens http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3795/pentax-fa31-limited-lens Fri, 06 Jul 2012 05:54:50 +0000 pundit 3795@/talks/discussions Moved from the Driftwood settings topic...

@strancali @driftwood @feha Thanks and following on from the Cluster V6 discussion regarding the Pentax FA31 Ltd.

image

It is a bit of a gem though it's not exactly cheap. I have a Pentax DSLR system and already had this lens for some two years before I bought the GH2. It's not as sharp as say a Samyang 35 F1.4 is wide open, but it's very good from around F2.5.

However it has great color, bokeh and 'depth' for want of a better term. Yes there are faster lenses, and lenses that are sharper wide open, but the FA31 does have a certain look that I think makes it quite unique and seems to be the reason many like it.

It's around 58mm (35 still frame equivalent) on the GH2 and almost could be considered a 'standard' focal length lens on an Super35 or APS-C video camera.

All three Pentax FA Limited's which include the FA31, FA43 and FA77 come from the film era and while they are screw drive auto-focus they do have proper external focusing rings with hard end points and are probably amongst the best manual focusing auto-focus lenses around. They also have proper aperture rings which can be set to either the 'A' setting for aperture control via a Pentax DSLR or you can manually set the aperture when the lenses are fitted to any other camera such as the GH2. The FA Limiteds take lens gears and operate fine with my follow focus.

If I didn't have any Pentax camera gear and was just looking for lenses for the GH2 would I buy a Pentax FA31 Ltd now? I guess at around $1000 USD you need to ask yourself the question is there another lens(es) that would be more desirable for shooting video on your GH2?

I'm personally quite interested in the Voigtlander 17.5mm F0.95 but only wish I could use it on my Pentax K5 as well.

The other thing is the lighting. I use a Photek Softlighter II with flash for still photography but replace the strobe head with 4 x 85w Spiral Fluro's when shooting video.

Sorry for the long rant but you did ask! ;>)

Here's a still shot taken of the same fellow (but in orange garb) with the FA31 Ltd on my previous Pentax K7 and also using the Photek Softlighter II but with flash rather than fluros. The APS-C sensor of the Pentax means a crop factor of 1.5 versus 1.86 with the GH2. So this is around 46mm equivalent focal length on a Super35 which is more relevant with video being the subject here.

(This was shot about two years ago when his house was much less cluttered!)

Anamorphic only close-focusing http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3753/anamorphic-only-close-focusing Sun, 01 Jul 2012 23:38:20 +0000 OzNimbus 3753@/talks/discussions Apologies if this is in the wrong section, it's my first new topic.

I recently purchased an Eiki 16f Anamorphic lens, supposedly focusing from 5 feet to infinity. Oddly enough, it focuses from about 11 inches to about 3.5 feet. Infinity focus is impossible to achieve, regardless of how much I've stopped down the taking lens. I've tested with numerous primes, ranging from 20mm to 135mm, all with the same result.

I'm curious to know if I'm completely out of luck, or if the lens just needs to be recalibrated by a tech... or if it's even possible. ...and before anyone asks, no there isn't a diopter on the lens!

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated! -0z-

Here's a short video illustrating the problem.
