Lens tests on the BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera (BMPCC) http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/7789/lens-tests-on-the-blackmagic-pocket-cinema-camera-bmpcc Thu, 15 Aug 2013 06:05:42 +0000 nomad 7789@/talks/discussions I think it's appropriate to start a new thread here and not to add it to the main BMPCC thread. Might apply to other S-16 alike cameras too in the future…

First the Lumix 7-14mm 4.0 zoom, since so many of you are hunting down a wide angle covering that sensor with it's massive crop factor (2.88 compared to photographic FF). The question was: what do we have to expect without in-camera corrections? Well, at 7mm we have massive barrel distortion, good sharpness "wide" open and minor CA in the corners. Distortion improves considerably at 10mm and is gone at 14mm. CA disappears too. Please excuse the bad lighting, but our studio is busy and so this was very improvised (camera goes to the next reviewer tomorrow).

High-speed AF operation

With the adoption of a rear-focus system, the focusing lens is 93.6 percent lighter* than the previous version. By driving this focusing lens using a pulse motor (PLM), which is directly linked to a lead screw, this zoom lens operates faster - approximately 8.3 times** at its wide-angle end and approximately 1.7 times** at its telephoto end —and is quieter than the existing model.* When mounted on the new PENTAX K-70 digital SLR camera body, it offers smoother, faster AF operation with dimly lit subjects, thanks to an improved AF algorithm that exchanges AF data between the camera body and the lens with greater precision. Performance of its power-assisted focus system during manual-focus operation has also been improved. The distance ring is designed to accurately detect the angle of rotation and swiftly react to a change of angle, so this zoom lens can shift its focusing lens smoothly in response to distance ring operation.

Quiet AF operation and electromagnetic diaphragm control, perfect for movie recording

This is the first K-mount lens to feature an electromagnetic diaphragm control system.* When mounted on the new PENTAX K-70 digital SLR camera body, it delivers smooth, high-precision aperture control during movie recording. Thanks to this state-of-the-art system, it shifts the aperture setting automatically and smoothly, even when the brightness level of the subject changes drastically in movie shooting. Coupled with the PLM mechanism, it also provides smooth AF tracking operation and exposure control, while minimising the intrusion of focus and aperture-shift noises during movie-recording operation. As a result, it produces more natural, true-to-life movies in locations such as a theatre stage or forest where brightness levels fluctuate considerably, as well as for moving subjects like sports people and animals.

  • This lens features a KAF4 lens mount compatible with an electromagnetic diaphragm control system. In order to use this lens, the camera’s firmware must be upgraded to the latest version (except for the PENTAX K-70). Cameras compatible with this system are: K-1, K-3 II, K-S2 and K-S1. If this lens is mounted on a camera without the proper firmware upgrade, its diaphragm control mechanism becomes inactive, making it impossible to obtain the correct exposure.

High-quality images, with a minimum focusing distance of 0.95 metres

With focal lengths from 84.5mm to 460mm (in the 35mm format), this telephoto zoom lens provides approximately 5.5-times zoom coverage from medium to super-telephoto ranges. Its 14-element, 11-group optics include an ED (Extra-low Dispersion) optical element to effectively minimise spherical and chromatic aberrations, while delivering high-resolution, fine-detailed images with rich contrast from the image’s centre to its edges and minimal colour bleeding at any focal length setting. In addition to the short minimal focusing distance of 0.95 metres, made possible by the rear-focus system, the lens barrel has also been designed to be free of extension during AF operation, making it ideal for a wide variety of applications, such as outdoor, sports and landscape shooting.

Compact and Weather-resistant telephoto zoom lens

Its retractable structure means that the lens is only 89 millimetres long. It is extremely compact, weighing it at just 442g, making it extremely portable. The ideal lens for casual, everyday shooting.

The lens features a dependable weather-resistant construction with 11 sealing parts to effectively prevent the intrusion of water in the lens. When paired with a weather-resistant PENTAX digital SLR camera body, it creates a durable, dependable digital imaging system that performs superbly in demanding shooting situations such as mist or rain, or in locations prone to water splashes or spray.

HD Coating to optimise image description

The lens is treated with a high-grade, multi-layer HD Coating.* Compared with conventional multi-layer coatings, this PENTAX-original coating delivers higher light transmittance and less reflection for bright, high-contrast images free of flare and ghost images, even in demanding lighting situations such as low light.

Other features

  • Quick-Shift Focus system allows the user to instantly switch to manual-focus operation, even when the camera’s AF system is in operation..
  • SP (Super Protect) Coating applied to the front surface of the lens to effectively repel water and grease.
  • Rounded diaphragm with nine blades to produce a smooth, beautiful bokeh (defocus) effect, while minimising the streaking effect of point light sources.

85mm F2.4 Zeiss Loxia lens http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/15735/85mm-f2.4-zeiss-loxia-lens Thu, 15 Sep 2016 03:24:17 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 15735@/talks/discussions image

Specs

The Loxia 2.4/85 is the youngest member of our manual focus lens family for Sony α7 series cameras. So the already available three focal lengths of the lens family – Loxia 2.8/21, Loxia 2/35 and Loxia 2/50 – are supplemented with a lens in the tele range. Specially designed for mirrorless full-frame cameras with E mount, the compact ZEISS Loxia lenses are the ideal choice for travel and street photographers who value light and compact camera equipment. “In terms of its technology and the feel of its surface, the Loxia 2.4/85 fits perfectly with the existing focal lengths, and is particularly well suited for portrait photography,” says Christophe Casenave, product manager with ZEISS Camera Lenses. The Loxia 2.4/85 will be available in stores starting December 2016.

The new Loxia 2.4/85 with its seven lens elements in seven groups has been designed for digital sensors and is based on an optimized ZEISS Sonnar design.

The lens has a minimum object distance of 0.80 meters. The manual focus ring has a rotation angle of 220 degrees and enables the subtlest variations of focusing. The large aperture of f/2.4 combined with the high-quality optical design ensures an appealing bokeh. The electronic interface transfers lens data (EXIF) as well as focus movements. Additionally, if desired by the user, this activates the camera’s loupe function. “Precise manual focusing with hard stop and the mechanical setting of the aperture (working aperture priority mode) provide sophisticated photographers who don’t want to leave everything to the camera abundant possibilities for composition,” Casenave adds.

Videographers also don’t come off badly with the new Loxia. Again the well-known de-click function is on board. This allows for mechanically deactivating the click stops on the aperture ring — a condition for silent and infinite adjustments of the aperture. As a result, the ZEISS Loxia 2.4/85 is also an attractive lens for video cameras that have an E mount, such as the Sony PXW-FS7 and PXW-FS5. The overall package comprises a robust metal barrel, the filter diameter of M52 (which is identical across all focal lengths) and protection against penetration of dust and spray onto the lens mount. In addition, the external diameter, which is uniform across all ZEISS Loxia lenses, simplifies film shoots.

Global delivery of the ZEISS Loxia 2.4/85 will begin at the beginning of December 2016. The lens shade is included with delivery. The recommended retail sales price is 1,399 euros (including 19% VAT in Germany) or 1,399 US$.

Whole Voigtlander set for video? 10.5 mm 17.5 mm 25 mm 42.5 mm http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16601/whole-voigtlander-set-for-video-10.5-mm-17.5-mm-25-mm-42.5-mm Fri, 17 Mar 2017 06:20:30 +0000 skatemurai 16601@/talks/discussions 5 years back, I researched and found praises for Nokton lens, so I bought Nokton 25 mm. I fall in love with it - with its build quality and its softness. Unfortunately for some reason I sold it and tried to gave up this hobby.

After some months I bought Nokton 17.5 mm and Panasonic G6, then Phantom 3 Pro and last year Panasonic 100-300.

As my hobby and side job, I shoot videos of weddings, cultural events, and so on. Recently I got idea to step up and upgrade my gear, but I found myself teared up between so much choices. Because of my past experiences, I tend to favourites Nokton lenses. I idealize having whole set of them.

From last year I saved up enough from my videography to afford to buy Voigtlander 10.5 mm, 25 mm and 42.5 mm, with Panasonic G85 body (althought I would spend all of that money saved from videography from last year). For some time I worried that Voigt lens are not stabilized, but Pan G85 body is, so that is good. Idea of having whole Voigt set seems like perfect step up in my videography. Manual focus is still challenge for me, but with 17.5 mm I got used to it and even quite cherish it. What makes me confused are 3 things:

    1) Thought of trying to get used to Panasonic lenses with not-so exclusive build quality keeps me from buying one. But I could buy used for 2 years, functional Panasonic Nocti 42.5 mm f/1.2 for 800 dollars, and use it for both videography and photography too (autofocus and stabilization), so it seems like no brainer, but I tend to cling to Voigt lens with my heart. And having whole set of Voigts would keep my "style" somehow unified maybe? If I would take photos with Voigts I would be probably frustrated (with moving objects)... on the other hand this way I could train manual focusing for my videos. So as you can see I am really confused with both options. For same money I could have new Voigt 42.5 mm (I live in Central Europe, so buying electronis from foreign countries is not possible due to high fees).

    2) Second problem with buying almost whole set of Voigt lens (10.5, 25, 42.5 and Panasonic G85) is money. I can afford it, but man, it is a lot of money. Even worry of theft of my gear comes in mind. On the other hand, with possibility on reach, I would love to play with all those Voigt lenses in different situations for different purposes on upcoming projects/events...

    3) I counted with Nokton 10.5 mm for purpose of using it in future on one of those new one-hand-gimbals, but althought I saw smooth videos of this combo, I saw bad review too (too heavy-front for some gimbals). Officialy weight-wise it is under norm though, so I would have just to try it first I guess...

What do you think? What would you do? What should I do? :-)

Thanks a lot for your answer.

A few of us have purchased this lens from the 'hidden gems among lenses' thread recommendation. I read the reviews of having focusing problems. It seems that the macro function is stuck on. I just received mine today, and my lens cannot focus as well. Any insight on this subject or lens would be helpful. It is the canon fd mount version.

    1. I am using a fotga adapter, and I've also tried the fotodiox adapter for fd mounts.

    2. To use the macro function you must slide it to 200mm and turn to the left. There doesn't seem to be any locking or engaging. You must then turn it all the way to the right to slide back to anything under 200mm. When back to anything lower, it will still focus but everything is blurry.

I can take pictures if anyone needs more information. Looking to solve this issue so we can all use the lens. Thanks!

    Manual lens rebuilding http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/43/manual-lens-rebuilding Mon, 02 May 2011 15:53:54 +0000 svart 43@/talks/discussions
Rebuilding/cleaning lenses is not a simple thing to do. The work is physically easy but any small slip up can render the lens unusable. Also, in most lenses if you take the helicals apart and then attempt to put them back together later, the helicals will line up a hundred different ways but only one way will be right. IF you take the helicals apart, be VERY sure that you have marked them somehow or you'll be in for a hard time.

I have been building up a set of manual nikon lenses, primarily AI series lenses. I've been buying cheap lenses that usually have stuck focuses since this is really an easy way to get lenses for less than premium price, as long as you can work on them. This isn't without potential issues as a lot of sellers will tell you the obvious problems but either won't know all of the details or they just won't tell you all the details. Some lenses have even been taken apart previously and put together wrong.. In short, there might be more problems with these lenses than you know about, so be prepared.

Anyway, I can't go into detail about how to rebuild a lens since each lens is different and might need different work done but I can share some of the issues I had.

One of the issues was re-greasing the lens helicals. Tons of websites and forums claim to have the magic formulas for helical grease or they'll tell you that some strange brand works the best. Some sell you tiny little amounts of grease for lots of money while others mention greases that haven't been available for decades.

I've tried a lot of different greases and here's what I found:

    Forget any organic grease.

Anything marked NLGI 2 is going to be too thick. This includes pretty much any of the "bicycle" or automobile greases that are touted on a lot of lens websites. They make the lenses feel solid but focusing takes considerable force which may cause the lens to "bob" back and forth while focusing(also known as lens breathing) and/or shift in the mounts. Both of which ruin shots.

NLGI 1 is better but some of the greases are sticky while some are more jelly-like and offer very little metal-to-metal protection. Most of these are made to grease plastic gears or O-rings. A lot of these greases are PAO based oils with thickeners to make them more grease-like.

PAOs are the base chemicals for synthetic oils like Mobil 1 automobile oils. They tend to stick to metals pretty well and they never separate under heat and pressure like organic oils.

Many of the websites I read said nothing about using oils and the few that did said never to use oils. They never specified what kind or even if they had tried it. I found that synthetic motor oil felt the best and offered the most metal-to-metal protection in the helicals. I even performed a test where I heated the lens helicals up to see if the oil would run out. It did not, generally because synthetic oils actually thicken up slightly when heated.

I wanted a PAO based oil with a sticky property that had PTFE(teflon). I found Super Lube 51004. It's a high viscosity PAO based oil with PTFE. a few small dabs of oil on the helicals and the lenses move smoothly and easily with no "whispering" that you get with metal/metal contact. Just don't use too much, a small amount is all that is needed.

    70-300MM F4-5.6 Tamron SP DI VC USD Lens, 2017 year http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16408/70-300mm-f4-5.6-tamron-sp-di-vc-usd-lens-2017-year Sat, 04 Feb 2017 08:08:58 +0000 Vitaliy_Kiselev 16408@/talks/discussions image

Tamron, a leading manufacturer of optics for diverse applications, announces the launch of a new telephoto zoom lens product, the SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di VC USD (Model A030) (hereinafter called “Model A030”), for 35mm full-frame DSLR cameras. Model A030 was developed by substantially enhancing the features of the popular SP 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di VC USD (Model A005) (hereinafter called “Model A005”), which has enjoyed high acclaim since its launch in 2010 as a telephoto zoom lens with outstanding performance. With the external design completely revamped, a Fluorine Coating with outstanding durability is applied to the front element surface of the lens. Improvements have also been achieved in AF speed and responsiveness and VC (Vibration Compensation) functions. Model A030 will be sold only in the Japanese market.

    Product Highlights

    1. Improvements in AF speed and responsiveness
Improvements in the control circuit and AF algorithm of the previous Model A005 have enhanced both focusing speed and accuracy, which enables a moment to be captured without letting the photo opportunity slip away, and which makes the A030 a suitable lens for photographing fast-moving subjects.
    2. Improved VC functions
Improving Tamron’s unique VC (Vibration Compensation) functions has improved the responsiveness of the VC lens elements, and Model A030 achieves a higher image stabilization performance level of 4.0 stops according to the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) standard.
    3. External design renovated
The zoom ring and focus ring using linear-based grid patterns and the brand ring in tungsten silver create an external design with a high-grade feel.
    4. Equipped with Fluorine Coating to improve user-friendliness for the lens The front surface of the lens element is coated with a protective fluorine compound that is water- and oil-repellant. The lens surface is easier to wipe clean and is less vulnerable to the damaging effects of dirt, dust, moisture and fingerprints.

There may be a more lenses such as macro, more zoom, large aperture, and prime lenses in the pipeline. While we were unable to have specifics, more lenses are already in the works, and on the X lens roadmap. High quality lenses have been developed after learning Leica qualities and applying them to their own designs, and by using software correction they are able to correct any distortion caused by the more compact lenses. This will mean that the distortion will / may show on RAW images, and that Panasonic will need to update RAW support for these new lenses.

He also said that the GH3 is not due imminently, as the GH2 is still extremely popular, but that there is a high end GF series camera in the works.”

Lens recommendation for filming football with GH4 http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/16327/lens-recommendation-for-filming-football-with-gh4 Fri, 13 Jan 2017 08:12:04 +0000 lexicon 16327@/talks/discussions Hi I wondered if any of you had a lens recommendation for filming a football match using a GH4? I'm going to be covering a couple of matches (one of which might be at night under floodlights). I was thinking of having a friend use a 35-70mm on a tripod and I would use the 42.5mm or 12-35mm on a stabilser following the action. The lenses I have are the 42.5 and the 12-35mm so I was wondering which telephoto to get 35-70 or 100-300.

I assume that the shutter speed stays at 1/50 for videoing sport? I'm not looking to film the whole match just key moments of one player that I would edit down to a 5 minute promo.

    Thanks for any advice.
