Small HDSLR Cameras http://www.personal-view.com/talks/categories/hdslr/feed.rss Tue, 21 May 13 06:28:17 -0400 Small HDSLR Cameras en-CA Why we will not get the perfect low budget DSLR or Mirrorless camera: http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/6469/why-we-will-not-get-the-perfect-low-budget-dslr-or-mirrorless-camera Fri, 22 Mar 2013 05:32:31 -0400 apefos 6469@/talks/discussions Main and obvious reason is: manufacturers needs to protect the pro cameras sales.

Everybody knows Canon are full of moire and aliasing and they do not improve the sensor in cheap DLSR for many years. Also there is not earphone output. Do you want a good sensor ? It exists, you just need more money to get it: 5D Mark III. A little more dynamic range and resolution? OK, C100, C300, C500. The price range of these cameras just says the obvious: do you want pro quality? So pay more, much more!

Sony do not give us mic input in cheap NEX cameras, also they are full of aliasing and low light is noisy with a maximum iso 3200. Do you want pro quality? OK, it exists: FS100, just pay more, much more and get the great low light performance and aliasing free.

Panasonic is giving us more, but dynamic range is poor even in GH3, sensor decreased in size, full of noise in low light. Why don't they just decrease the pixel count in the sensor to reduce noise? Because it is a photo camera which needs more megapixels and to keep a division in the market between consumer, prosumer and pro.

Nikon is getting into the game with the D5200, but there is the horizontal noise pattern...

What about the BMCC? Well, the camera itself is not cheap. SSD storage to shoot raw video is expensive. ProRes does not have the same DR. The camera needs rig to handle. Low light performance is poor. Not so portable solution.

So it is smart idea to stop dreaming about perfect low budget cameras. Want or need more? Simple: pay more!

Or use the solutions to improve the low budget cameras: VK hack, magic lantern firmware, neatvideo noise reduction, vaf antialiasing/moire filter, external sound recorder or juicelink preamp in camera, custom picture profiles/styles to increase DR, better lighting, careful grading in post, film grain simulation, sharpening, stabilizing, and of course good script and direction together with tripods, sliders, stabilizers, steadicams, and so on...

Using low budget cameras is "extract milk from the rocks". But remember it was worse in the era of VHS, SVHS, Hi8, miniDV and also HDV with 35mm adapter.

There is a new feature to come, the HDR/WDR/EDR video, already available in Red cameras. But will it be implemented in low budget cameras? And if it get implemented, will it be completely useful or with limitations like the magic lantern firmware approach? So keep dreaming about perfect low budget cameras is not good idea. Deal with the limitations or pay more.

We all know that Leica has an awesome name as a primary camera for image quality, but in this review, some aspects of the shooting workflow were not considered ideal.

Criticisms include lack of autofocus and poor ISO performance, although it's great for street and landscape shots. The lens of course is superb.

Lowish light 50p (720 or 1080) cameras http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5921/lowish-light-50p-720-or-1080-cameras Sun, 27 Jan 2013 18:53:09 -0500 Gethinc 5921@/talks/discussions I shoot interiors in available light. Typically at f3.5 at 640-2500 iso. I bought a gh2 but it struggles in available light. My 60d and 7d shoot horrible 50p and the noise is nasty. I'm in the process of moving to Nikon full frame but I believe their 50p is worse. I need a wide lens, (so I'm stuck with f4 on the gh2, 12mm isn't wide enough) things will be more interesting when the speed booster comes out. Is their anything else out there that shoots nice 50p? The nex video I've seen has looked very videoey, not sure about low light though. Sony slt cameras? ...?

The Polaroid iM1030/iM1232 compact interchangeable lens camera features a 10mm-30mm lens in a compact Micro Four Thirds body that’s compatible with a wide range of Micro Four Thirds lenses with available adapter. The vibrant 3.5” LCD display, HDMI output, HD video recording, 18.1 megapixel resolution, auto blink detection and panoramic photo capabilities make this compact camera perfect for every special moment at $299 MSRP. With optional built-in peer-to-peer Wi-Fi (model iM1232W for $349 MSRP), it’s easy to connect to any network and instantly upload and share those great memories with friends via email or social networks.

In all cameras the sensor is built into the lens, oddly, which Polaroid is convinced with cut down on dust and scratches

Recommend Me a Camera http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5609/recommend-me-a-camera Sat, 29 Dec 2012 13:38:08 -0500 Alex2Fischer 5609@/talks/discussions I'm obviously considering the GH2, because of the amazing detail. However, as an all-around camera, I've heard it struggles with low-light and photography. It also doesn't have nice features like focus peaking, zebra, and picture styles.

Is it worth waiting for new cameras at CES and CP+? Or maybe there are some other recent cameras which might be the GH2 Killer... OM-D E-M5 anyone?

So, for a budget student who's going for the film look, what's your advice for the best all-around camera, which is not only capable of amazing video, but helps the user get the most out of it?

Peace and Love, Alex Fischer

Suggestions for Best Camera + Lens for ~$1K http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/5521/suggestions-for-best-camera-lens-for-1k Tue, 18 Dec 2012 16:42:44 -0500 jsteg094 5521@/talks/discussions Hello,

I've spent weeks researching, and I've decided to turn to some aficionados.

First up, Camera: I've found that the GH2 is the best price/performance camera. Is this still true today, or are there better ones, such as the Olympus E-M5? Or, would it be best to wait -- do you think there will be anything extraordinary worth waiting for in the first few months of 2013?

Lastly, Lens: I've seen some people use old TV SD 2/3" Lenses, like B4 and C-Mount, etc. Are these worth it? I've heard that (for the most part), the IQ isn't very good, and there's a large amount of work (modifications) to get them to work.

Should I instead be looking at native lenses, like the Leica 25mm? Lots of people talk about anamorphic lenses, and the Voigtlander f/0.95. It seems like almost everyone raves about the Voigtlander, and while it seems expensive, is it truly worth it (price/performance) over say the Panny 20mm or even the Leica 25mm?

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I hope this topic helps others as well! -Josh

This guy took the popular Raspberry Pi (tiny computer), and put it inside a battery grip, connecting it to his DSLR. Because it's a computer and connected via usb, he gets access to the memory storage and if the camera has it then also the shutter and control/interval shots.

He is doing it with a Canon 5D Mark II.... but if it's possible, I'd love to develop something similar for The GH2 I have... Wireless tethering being my interest.

Specifically watch the second video. Its very short and to the point. Really thought Canon was going to be giving Panasonic and Olympus a run for their money - I'll let you be the judge, though.

BTW, did not see this posted anywhere else, if it is, please close thread, @Vitaley.

Informed Purchase of HDLSR http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/3699/informed-purchase-of-hdlsr Wed, 27 Jun 2012 04:41:41 -0400 divineworld 3699@/talks/discussions I've been following the HDSLR scene for a year now, and now I am puzzled more today than I was when I started out. My primary occupation is a director/editor at a news tv station in Malta,Europe but I started venturing in documentaries and productions as a side job for more than a year, at first I was eying the GH2. The footage I saw amazed me, but than moved to canon , for more practical options basically, I can't rely solely on hacked hardware. At first I was going to get a 600d but ended up getting a 60d, now I need another camera the third camera and was very interested in getting the 5D Mark II , but then the Mark III emerged!

The many blogs I've been following, practically I browse trough all! Are saying something about the sharpness on the latest 5D, I wish to ask what does this mean is the footage to soft? , lacking detail or it's just a question of lack of detail in a pixel contest, by that I Mean it's at magnification that one can notice this lack of sharpness or it's all over the image!

Also any idea about what starter lenses should I consider, what about primes does old glass resolve in better quality, or stick to modern primes, also what's a good starter light kit for a starter budget.

Maybe if you get chance, I get some feedback

BBC approved cameras list http://www.personal-view.com/talks/discussion/2296/bbc-approved-cameras-list Thu, 16 Feb 2012 12:12:14 -0500 GOODEMPIRE 2296@/talks/discussions I spent a day on location with a crew shooting with 7D. I found 7D very inconvenient and weak if compared to the hacked GH2 in almost every respect. But the sad fact is that 7D is on the BBC's list of approved camcorders (although partially), while the GH2 is not. I understand that nothing could be done about it, but just out of pure curiosity — is there any scientific way to distinguish a GH2 shot from the one by 7D at the end of the production cycle?

The problem starts when I plug into the mini HDMI port on my GH2 the camera switches "rec mode" to 1920-1080p 29.97 (FSH), even though before the mini HDMI cable was inserted my "rec mode" was 720 60p 59.94 (SH), also I can't access my "rec mode" file on my camera well the external monitor is plugged in. Once I disconnect the cable the camera goes back to 720 60p mode, were it should have been all along. Anyone else having this problem?

The Second announcement is from Nikon (Nikonrumors). What started as a new line of camera to replace the d300 and d3, has now change to two full frame cameras. A d800 and D4 to replace the d700 and D3. Details are a bit more sketchy here. It is more of a 18megapixel $ 5000 D4 (low light, sport pg camera) and a $ 2500 24megapixel D800. On the video side, some are speculating of very strong video performance. As a Nikon professional photographer, I have been repeatably disappointed by Nikon, they are the still company that have everything to gain to put some ground breaking technology to take market share in the large sensor camera. The dslr revolution has brought a total new market that they could not have dreamed before. For now the market is not mature and people can change brand very rapidly. I hope that this time they will not miss the boat. Either one of these would be a basic minimum for me. A 10bit 422 high bitrate codec (or/and) An uncompressed 10bit 422 hdmi output that can be recorded by external recorders (or/and) At least a limited (time/buffer) HD raw output.

Is there a reason that the electronic shutter mechanism is not used in still mode? I am guessing that to get the pixel densities for still mode a mechanical shutter is still required but for movies at lower res and lower shutter speeds it is not required?
